Title: The drop
Post by: FreddySTFC! on Monday, January 9, 2017, 19:50:09
Come on then. Who's everybody's four? I'm going for Oldham (finally), Shrews (they were worse than us on Sat), Chesterfield & us!! Torn between us & Port Vale who I think will struggle but fancy Bury & Cov to be ok.
Can somebody move this to the Match Day Action section?!?!

I think we'll occupy all four relegation positions at the end of the season.

19. Some no hoper I care little for
20. Some no hoper I care little for
------------------------------------
21. Swindon Town
22. Swindon Town
23. Swindon Town
24. Swindon Town

With enough focus, we can do this.

:)

In previous relegation seasons you could tell we were in trouble and things were dire, however this time around despite piss poor football, I think the general discord from the club makes me think meh. I genuinely couldn't care if we stayed up or went down, and I think that is tragic in some ways as I use to care.

Think there might actually be 4 teams worse than us and we might survive by default.
Which is a sad state of affairs for football - particularly if you consider, is this side better than our two previous relegated sides? Debatable but probably not.

I was at Newport when they relegated us. That team would piss all over  our lot today.

Got to be the worst bunch of misfits ever.

We're going to be saved by the fact this league is the worst it's been in living memory.

Northampton
Us
Cov

Bury
Chesterfield
Shrewsbury
Oldham

All is not lost yet, there are some poor teams around.  However with if you look at tables historically after 26 games, there's usually a couple in the drop zone who go and a couple who pull away, to be replaced by one just above the line and someone who goes into free fall.

So take last season....Crewe and ColU went, but Fleetwood and Oldham survived.  Blackpool were roughly in our place after 26 but went and Donny joined them.....they were sat on 35 at the time. Atm nobody's picking Charlton who are on 35....basket case club with a boss who got relegated last season, and sacked with Franchise without a home win all season.

In fact some are backing Charlton for promotion.  In other words it's a bit early to tell....we're certainly  bad enough to drop, but things will become clearer by Feb....which is the traditional time to get out the Div 4 route book.

Oldham
Chesterfield
Bury

But cant decide on that last spot, I think there will be 3 or 4 teams looking over their shoulder on the last day or the season including us

The fortnight elapsed since I last posted on this thread, has probably increased our chances of the drop despite the Bolton result.  Others like Bury, Oldham and Shrews are showing signs of life with new management making an impact. Whereas we haven't as yet strengthened other than Ben Gladwin, and he can't do it on his own.

The main concern is we've a side and management wholly unsuited to a relegation battle....

Yep, a quick comparison with the same stage last season shows us as 6 points and 15 goals (scored) worse off.  In the remaining games last season, we benefited from Ajose's 11 goals (plus 5 from Doughty) to get us out of trouble.  There is nobody in the current squad capable of scoring enough goals to do what's needed this time, though.

An interesting comparison is with 05/06...we're a point better off at the same stage. Then our 28th game we pasted Bormuff 4-2, Cureton scoring on his return from loan. We then had a decent trot of home wins with Cureton getting a further 6 in the final 18. However the sale of Rory Fallon to Swansea on this day 11 years ago effectively did for us.

We won 5 drew 5 and lost 8 of those last 18. We are going to need something like 6 wins and 5 draws or 7 wins and 2 draws, difficult to see how that can happen without a goalscorer.
