Title: Shrewsbury vs Swindon official matchday thread
Post by: tans on Saturday, October 1, 2016, 06:43:14
Seeing as we won the last time i started one of these, thought i would start another.

Need a result after tuesdays crap result or the pressure will start to mount up.

0-0 draw with one of our defenders being sent off.

Right, I can't see a MDT so here goes.

I don't think we were THAT bad on Tuesday night, finishing and concentration let us down at key moments, wipe that out and everything will be a little peachier.

Mellon is already talking about pressing us hard and winning the ball back but also that we play similar styles with the ball, I am of the belief that we can do it better so let's fucking show them and get an important 3 points today.

Going for another 2-0 away win with Murray and Obika notching.

Much like the Oldham game, I fully expect us to lose this one (3-1). Whether we can continue to produce shock results like that on the road will probably dictate our season (between lower mid table and relegation scrap, not there is much between the two)

Depends on the line up.1-0 defeat or 3-1 defeat

Title: Re: Shrewsbury vs Swindon official matchday thread

Historically we do fairly well up there in Wales (they hate that! ;) ) with 6 wins there in the last 8 matches in Shrewsbury and in all matches we have won 13 times against them in 16 games with none of those being draws.

So I predict a 0-0 draw in front of 4,345 crowd with 385 "proper" STFC fans there.

Shrewsbury currently lie in 22nd place on 9 points, we sit in 18th place on 11.

Shrews haven't won in the last 4 matches and before that only have only 1 win in the last 8, with that single win being away at Oldham.

They have only won 1 game at home in the league so far from the 6 home games they have played.

Pre match mingling with middle England in Montgomery's Tower.

Similar performance to last Saturday should hopefully do the job.
Would like to see an improvement on midweek from Super Jon today.

"Percy Thrower, Percy Thrower are you listening, Charles Darwin, Graham Turner, err the EBF, today we will give your boys one hell of a beating"

Onto the game. We'll probably lose and be crap again.

Or Shrewsbury will be as bad as Oldham was and Norris will score the only goal in a 1-0 win.

Playing a CM at CB just to keep 3 at the back (which is leaky even with 3 defenders) is irritating.

I used to think that, being almost 3000 miles away. But it got to the point where  I could survive on Sky sports live updates coupled with the TEF (when it is not too excruciatingly negative).

Playing a CM at CB just to keep 3 at the back (which is leaky even with 3 defenders) is irritating.

Shows ther inadequacy of the squad, only having 3 CB's, with JSW done by Pope for the season, we're left with 2, Branco just back from op and injury and a kid Jones, who's clearly getting injuries playing 2 games a week.

Cost us on Tuesday, and it might consign us to Div 4 this season. I have some sympathy for Luke here, because he gets what Power gives him, but it does seem a bit reckless, surely better to go 4-5-1.

Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, October 1, 2016, 14:43:06
Goddard just looked like he needed one extra touch all the time and wasn't used to the pace of the game at this level being closed down quicker than he was used to. Sounds like he has taken it all onboard now and showing the talent he obviously has, long may that improvement continue.

Gladwin looked like that when he first joined us and he turned out fine as I am sure Goddard will do too.

We just don't seem to be able to play 90 minutes. Dominant in the first half, but as usual couldn't put the game to bed even against a team that according to the radio looked ready to crumble. Disappointing that we failed to capitalise. Sounds like the second half was two poor teams making lots of mistakes. It's not good.

Yes it is atm. Millwall are in free fall, Charltonn not doing as well as expected.  Both have off field issues which could mean they implode, whereas we have relative, if financially limited stability.....just as likely though they'll both resolve their isssues and go on decent runs.  Bolton next up fit this bill as well....so definitely a mustn't lose game on Sat.

Yes, that happened at the same time.  We had lost only four league games until that point (Aug - 31 Jan) and were second in the table.  After that break, we lost four out of the next five games and lost a total of nine games from 31 Jan to the end of the season, including the embarrassing 3-0 defeats at the hands of the Pikeys, Franchise and Bristol City.  Something had definitely changed.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014%E2%80%9315_Swindon_Town_F.C._season

Iffy Onuora was always to be found in OT on a Friday night...we got relegated.

Luggy Sturrock an occasional Friday nighter, and I saw PdC in the Pig once.

I reckon Williams should acquire a hardcore meth and crack habit. It may or may not make us play better, but it could make interviews and what not more interesting.

Charlton haven't signed enough League One proven players and Millwall don't have a style of play suited to Leagur One.

I like this.
Also that spoof Bill Murray thing should be true. He should buy Power out and bring in Russell Crowe as joint director.

I used to angst about it....on the one hand, I could see Iffy was chilling, getting out amongst the tbf few Town fans, whom appreciated his and Reeeeves presence, or on the other, I wondered whether he might have been better off being at home watching videos of opponents, and maybe embracing Zen meditation.

When I saw Reeeeves making a basic attempt at pulling, I was decided....the management weren't taking it seriously. If you can't even do that what hope of a result away at Layer Road?

Williams just got out his little book of excuses again
So what did he say?

Whenever I've heard his post-match interviews, he's usually spot-on with his assessments and does not shy away from the negatives. His problem so far is not being able to rectify the negatives he's identified.

Apparently, we shot ourselves in the foot while "chasing the game" at 1-0 up!  No, me neither!  :hmmm:

only problem I have with Williams being on the piss the night before  is potentially it sets a poor example to the players.

but who knows what the occasion was and I'm sure the players know their responsible.
---------

think in his interview he was saying we were chasing a goal to kill off the game. understandable though isn't it, we can't sit back on a 1 goal lead because we can't defend..

I've voiced my lack of confidence in Williams but his comment about going for another goal is perfectly reasonable. Would people prefer we got a goal and then sat back to defend it? His interview in general was fine and he was not afraid to reaslise what the problem was, he was not making excuses. By all means be critical but why try and twist things unnecessarily? What's the point in that?

Listened to BBC Shropshire on the way back.
Probably the most reasonable summary was "two poor teams lacking in confidence, both were there for the taking and both lacking the know how to win the game".
Not sure about the "Swindon are a team that we should be beating" comment though.

Disappointing that we couldn't get the second goal in the first half when in control.
Conceding following our own corner kick is depressing.

They were better in the second half and closed down more. A fussy ref meant no flow to the game which was to their advantage.
Note to their home crowd, that following rule change, free kicks for offside can be given in the opposition half now.
Lot of wasted energy in giving the ref stick for a correct decision.

Anyway positives were Goddard getting off the mark. The midfield will probably need to chip in with 15-20 goals between them this season, as the strikers will do well to get 12-15 on current form.
One three point conversion from Norris when everyone was willing him to get in on target.
Wish Jon would just put his foot through it sometimes as the scuffed side foot grass cutter from distance isn't working.

Three free kicks in dangerous positions, which at least this time were shared around.
Kasim's effort predictably went sailing over the bar, Goddard and Murray both deflected for corners.

Still, one defeat in three sounds better than one win in seven league games.

So, we concede if we try to defend a one goal lead, and concede if we try to go for the second. It's gonna be a right laugh, this season. Sigh.

thanks for the report.

I can understand the 'should beat' comment if you put it into the context of an expected relegation battle, at home, playing a team currently struggling for goals, wins and clean sheets.

perhaps 'need to beat' would be better.

I'm off to look to up new offside rules.

OK, I'm confused by the wording of the offside.

the offside position is obviously where the player was when the ball was kicked.

so is it the the free kick given where the player is when the ref blows, rather than where he was stood when the back was kicked?

Yesterday their forward was flagged for playing the ball after coming back from an offside position, he played the ball a couple of yards in his own half which is where the free kick was given. So it's from where the ball is played by the offside player.

As for our 'strikers' - I'd go for Norris every time over Delfouneso. At least has had chances and shots. I can't remember Delfouneso having either.

Saying that, I'd still give Hylton a go. Not a fan of playing, essentially, 2 CFs as strike partners.

The outcome of Tuesday has no relevance to Luke's future.....we cannot afford to take the game seriously and pick up injuries, cards etc.  Need to make the maximum number of changes, and treat it as a friendly.

We need to get as much game time for the youngsters as we can and make as many changes as we are allowed IMO. The last thing we want is more injuries and silly bookings form a pointless game despite it being against THEM.

Bookings don't count to the league - agree about changes but not wholesale, the last thing we want is to be on the end of a severe beating that would probably kill what little confidence is left, so a battling performance winning or losing on penalties would be slightly better so need a few of the more experienced pro's rather than too many less experienced in there.

Bolton are without their 2 creative midfielders and 5 strikers - hence their dreadful recent run.

It's not just us who get wholesale injuries.

Pah, glass chin, barely touched him. It was the forearm smash strength of a youth team player;)

That's a good point actually, if cards don't count then neither should post match punishments. Fiiight Fiiiight whoever you may be...actually with our on pitch "muscle" we'd lose that unless Branco took them all out.
