Title: Peterborough United v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: donkey on Saturday, September 3, 2016, 06:32:30
So off we travel to sunny Peterborough.

They are nicknamed Posh as their owner really likes that song from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

The Tap and the Sam Smiths pub (Almshouse?) are well worth going to. Also a bit further out is the Palmerston Arms which does a good range of beer. Lord Palmerston was also Barney Gumble's favourite Prime Minister.

Live on Sky so I cant see us winning.

2-1 defeat with Norris grabbing his first for the club. Oh, and Moncur getting one for Posh.

Will take a draw
I would too.

Posh have only beaten us 3 times in the last 13 meetings.

We have won our last 2 visits there 2-1 and drew the previous one with Posh only beating us twice in the last 7 games played at the ABAX (London Road).

Pre match checking of ticket stub t&c's in The Drapers Arms.

Nice gothic cathedral.
Hereward the Wake should receive more recognition as a hero of the resistance against the proto frog invaders.

Trips here are normally eventful.
The crazy 5-4 and the 3-3 Nicky Hammond masterclass spring to mind.

Anyway, after the deluge, today's game will be abandoned due to a plague of locusts.

Hope our new Murray will be an improvement on the last one.

Just back from two weeks away.  Woke up this morning to find Autumn in the air and Town on TV in a few hours.  It's good to be back!  :)

I'd also take a draw, but remain optimistic for something more.

Bit early to feel optimistic about getting a result on our travels so best hope here has to be a draw - I am hoping that Power and Williams have assembled a squad of doing well in this division - not an easy task given the cash available. Give them a month to gel and we could see a play off place - but today its a draw at best 1-1

The barge is probably the best place to drink, Charters I think it's called. Good mix of home and away fans and a big sunny garden if the weather is nice.

Score draw today. 2-2. Norris and Murray.

 No idea today.

We've yet to really establish a settled side so far, but have managed a couple of wins at the CG and a draw on the road.

The loss of 3 to call ups, is something we didn't need while searching for stability. A goal from a striker would be something.

Short corners? Why do we bother as we just give the opposition the ball back.

And when thwy've been long, they've been straight into the goalkeeper's arms.  Do we not practice corners at all?

Good possession again, but final ball is poor or too much time is taken and the chance is gone.

0-1 HT

- Do not deserve to be losing this but that was a top quality free kick from Maddison.
- Impressed with our passing and movement up to their penalty area but we haven't really opened them up much.
- Thought Goddard had scored with his shot at the end of the first half. Thought that was the first pass or shot he had with any conviction. Think he's a good player but hasn't quite got the self belief yet.
- Back 3 are defending well.
- Delfounseo makes some excellent runs but hasn't been sent through once.
- Garry Birtles' commentary is appalling.

Title: Re: Peterborough United v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, September 3, 2016, 12:18:15
We have looked comfortable if not threathening, poor movement up front and still trying to walk the ball in.

Poor defending for the goal but shouldn't have been a free kick.

Defouneso doesnt look sharp enough yet but had a few good touches, would like to get Norris on for a bit more movement.....and a shot once in a while.

Posh are there for the taking, they look like the away side holding onto a lead and are very poor so far.

Not convinced about Delfouneso. He looks like he could produce something but its not happening for him.

Fair result, thought we played quite well without every looking overly dangerous though.

Thompson, Jones and Furlong looked gooda at the back.

Delfouneso needs more touches than he should be could well come good.

The weather played a big part but over all we did ok against a fairly poor Posh team.

Better crossing would be good and lets not walk the ball into the net and have a few shots.

Reasonably impressed with that.

Delf up front was isolated but did challenge back.

Goddard and Doughty outstanding, Brophy good but faded.

Dare I say it by Rogers was a bit unlucky to be subbed off and Murray won't forget his debut in a hurry....looked off the pace and I was surprised he got that much game time...early days for him.

Happy enough with a point away.

Corners were dogshit today...we need to make them count.

Birtles on Sky was spot on....all very nice with pretty play but sometimes you have to shake it up a bit. He said the same last season when Wigan served up our Arse on a plate.

vigs unlucky with a superb pen...glove or not that is going in!!

Title: Re: Peterborough United v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Nomoreheroes on Saturday, September 3, 2016, 17:33:36
Well, my 'critical' thoughts were:

Vigs: Didn't have anything to do

Brophy: Has a left foot and nothing else. Defender he was up against kept showing him inside and had him in his pocket.

Barry: Good outlet at times but couldn't cross

Thompson: Calm and assured and didn't lunge in today. Looked very good.

Jones: Big lad. Caught out of position and baited too easily. Looks pretty good and an upgrade on Turnbull.

Furlong: Played his position well I thought. Safe but unspectacular.

Rodgers: Thought he was tidy. Didn't take any risks. Solid display.

Thomas: Liked the look of him. Ran around and got the ball back lots. Played nice simple passes.

Doughty: Lots of energy and spark in midfield. Bit one footed and a little wasteful in the final third. Thought he unsurprisingly tired towards the end. Worked hard all game.

Goddard: Thought he got in lots of good positions, but his touch seemed poor and he took too long on the ball.

Delfouneso: At times I felt sorry for him in the first half. Thought he made lots of good runs and kept indicating where he wanted the ball, but noone passed it for him to run onto. But, I wasn't particularly impressed with his flicks and hold up play. Also, I'm not sure he is a predator in the box - Always seemed a mile away from the ball. Was that because he didn't take up good positions or because the service was poor?

Subs:
Murray: Looked very slow and rusty. Didn't see anything of note. Would rather he had a week of training before making his debut.

BOO: Looked lively but very small! Seemed ineffective after taking a clattering from one of our own players!

Norris: Ran around and tried hard. Shame his one chance didn't go in the back of the net.

Overall, I think that we looked a bit more organised and self assured at the back. We also looked quite disciplined when we didn't have the ball. However, I thought we offered little to no threat in the final third and needed the help of the Posh defence to grind out a result. Having said that, before the game, I thought we would lose quite comfortably. So battling back to 2-2 was a good result. I don't think either team will be challenging at the top, nor will they be struggling at the bottom.

They say people see games differently, but the above is exactly how I saw each player. Murray did look ring rusty, but at least he didn't let the penalty let his head drop, he was solid enough after, without doing anything spectacular. High hopes for him once he gets match fitness, and settles in.

The most positive thing for me today was the fact we started without Kasim, Obika, Sendells- White and Branco, yet we put out a decent team and we had good options on the bench which we never had last season.

We should have won today and I think we will do well this season. Our final ball needs to be better.

Looking forward to us scoring four or five goals next Saturday !

Agreed. Think we are missing Ajose (or any true goalscorer) hugely, and this may be more of a problem later in the season. But the squad looks much more balanced to me with better options/cover in most positions.

Hopefully the 17 attacking midfielders can share the goals amongst them to keep us scoring enough to be competitive.

Acid test will come on the proverbial cold February night in Oldham but promising that this young team hasn't let their heads drop and now recovered something from losing positions a few times already.

A few quotes from the Posh forum on the game....

Quote
Who's the guest commenter on Sky because he has a huge boner for the Robins.

Two mid-table teams.

I don't think it was that bad, I only got to watch 60 minutes as I had a game of my own but Swindon are gonna be around the same area that we desire to be around so doesn't a draw sound fair? I don't think it was a case of two crap teams as a lot of people seem to be steering towards I feel it was just two evenly matched teams not wanting to lose against an equal team

A fair result between two evenly matched teams.

Average is fair.
Comedy from Birtles saying what a good advert it was for L1.
Thought it was dull and the whole thing lacked atmosphere.

Mediocre at best. We are without doubt work in progress. Lets get past Christmas before we even think about promotion. At this moment in time to many players not consistent enough, as said elsewhere, lets be thankful for the point, move on, no point dwelling on that performance. Swindon were no better mind, it was always going to be a penalty or og for them to score, they created nothing.

We are not consistent enough overall. They looked a little more dangerous than us in attack.

Just goes to show that whoever you support, everyone sees the game differently.

Having watched the game again on TV those two efforts (one at the end of each half) by Goddard & Norris were fucking close.

At the time I thought Norris had scored

I thought some of the Posh fans made fair comments. It was a fairly dull and pedestrian game at times and neither side really looked anything special, both relied upon errors to score.

However we are lacking our two best players, had only one and a half natural centre backs on the pitch and some players who still need to settle in properly.

Absolutely spot on, I think if we had JSW, Kasim and Obika playing then it may have been a different result, but we can only speculate on that.

The weather played a big part in the game, forcing errors on both sides.

I think Luke Williams summing up was pretty spot on however even as an involved spectator it was incredibly dull and I thought the commentary that highlighted our final play as being dreadful was spot on - early season so hoping this team will get better as a unit - I would like to see BOO thrown on as an possible impact player as he looked like he was trying to get something going by attacking with the ball - not a great advert for League 1 football and any independent watching that would have gone for a walk - onwards and upwards....

I thought it was a decent advert for league 1 football, good technique, not a lot of diving, no hoofball, no stereotypical big lumps kicking the shit out of eachother. The only thing that was missing was real pace and finishing. Depends what you're into though

I may have been a hit harsh on Jones, he can at least attack a ball in the area without letting it bounce.
Was at fault for the first goal(free kick), but he has not many games behind him.
I have only seen him twice, and on both occasions he has not impressed me, quite happy to be wrong.
Turnbull was bloody crap, best news this season was hearing he had signed for another club.

Because some people think it, it doesn't make it a fact.  It would be fair to say that Jordan made a numnber of erors last year and wasn't as good as he was the previous year....nevertheless very young for a centre half, where players usually get better with age. Think it was away somewhere.

Be nice if the PA people could do a bit of research on how to get the pronunciations right.
Attention to detail and all that.

At least our one doesn't rattle through the opposition line up in less than 5 nanoseconds anymore.

So let's get this straight it was pronounced do.....like Do Do Do The Funky Gibbon, then werty as in qwerty keyboard.

Dough-er-tee is how commentators tend to say it. Which basically makes them cunts.

There was at least one TV commentator who kept calling him Nige Holt.
