Title: Devon
Post by: Panda Paws on Monday, July 18, 2016, 11:04:04
I recall this subject has been done to death in the past but can't find anything...

Anyway - me and the better half are hoping to cram in a 3-night break in August, in the UK. Was thinking Devon. Love Brixham/Dartmouth/Dartmoor area but never really explored the North Devon coast.

Any recommendations? We'd be looking for either a cottage or a nice b and b/boutique hotel sort of thing, near enough to a nice little town, decent beers and grub, bits and pieces to do.

Ilfracombe and Woolacombe Bay are very nice, and very close together

Myself, the wife and the boy stayed with family in Churston Ferrers last year.. close to Torquay, Brixham, Teignmouth and Dawlish.

Such a great part of the world. Even though it was November and fucking chucking it down, it was still really nice!

Went on holiday to Dawlish 2-3 times a year every year as a kid so know it really well. Tempted to stick with what I know, but then think we should probably broaden (slightly!) our horizons this time...

I don't think you can go wrong wherever you go down there..

I was down that way, back in about 1999, solstice, when a little girl contracted  something nasty on the beach at Dawlish Warren and died....horrible.  The beach had an EU  blue clearance, but the best guess was dog shit.

One of the reasons for Remain, was that EU legislation improved our sewage disposal...you could argue that we should be capable of sorting that ourselves, but sadly, crap used to be discharged straight into the sea....one of the reasons why from a very tender age, I'd go nowhere near swimming in the sea at most UK coastal places, and be very picky about where my kids went.....certainly nowhere near a beach with dogs on it.

If you want to visit some inland bits, go to Hay Tor, Brentor and Launceston (take a walk around the gorge).

Is that some sort of Rupert Murdoch, convict theme park?

I remember going there with our little one a few (or more) years ago.

Weather was terrible so ended up going to a lot of the indoor play areas, one of which was "The Big Sheep".

Son enjoyed it, and he was just small enough that I had to take him on all the slides, so Dad enjoyed it too :)

Scary thing is we are off to Dublin for a few days in a few weeks time, only slides we will be doing is after I fall on my arse trying to keep up with him in the drinking stakes, bloody students

Much more to see and do in south Devon in my opinion. If the weather is good the beaches around woolacombe and croyde are lovely though.

If you like good beer, go to the Beer Market (or any of Galway Brewery's bars) and have some of their Of Foam And Fury. One of the best beers I've ever had.

We went to big sheep last month and the boys loved it, and just like you i have to escort one of my boys down the slides in the softplay area. What a shame.

The Big Sheep was *brilliant* when I was little, so much fun. Came home with sheep whistles and all sorts. We all went back maybe 6 or 7 years ago and it was rubbish. The Foot & Mouth outbreak had wiped out their sheep business and they'd started a brewery to make ends meet, they didn't do sheep racing any more, and the 'live' sheep sheering demonstration was a DVD on a TV. We all came away disappointed, even all my nephews weren't that bothered by it. Sounds like it's making a return to form though, which is good!

Devon's nice, but they make their cream tea's the wrong way round. For that reason, I prefer Cornwall.

Quite right too. Cream first - that's just stupid.

No way. Always cream first. And loads of it.
