Title: Your First Away Game
Post by: Ardiles on Thursday, February 11, 2016, 19:36:35
Following on from the 'First Town Game (http://thetownend.com/index.php?topic=48314.0)' thread, here's a similar opportunity to share your first away day memories.

Six questions:
  • Who was your first away game against?
  • What was the score?
  • When was it?
  • How long was it after your first home game?
  • How old were you?
  • What do you remember about the day?

I'll set the ball rolling.

  • Who was your first away game against?
    Oxford United

  • What was the score?
    Oxford 5-3 STFC (http://swindon-town-fc.co.uk/MatchCentre.asp?MatchID=19920133)

  • When was it?
    March 7th, 1992

  • How long was it after your first home game?
    18 months

  • How old were you?
    19

  • What do you remember about the day?
The long walk up the hill to Headington from the city centre.  The feeling that their ground was brutal and inhospitable, and shit (compared to the relative grandeur of the County Ground...the only other ground I'd ever set foot in).  The Police helicopters overhead as we left the ground.  And the Irish pisshead, about 50 yrs old, who sidled up to us as we were leaving the ground and offered us a fight.  (We politely declined.)

Oh...and Shaun Close scoring after less than a minute, and thinking we had it in the bag.

Northampton away when Kingy was in charge. Jon Beswetherick played. I think Kingy got in a fight? I was younger than I am now and it was probably a good 15 years after my first home game.

Ipswich,

We won 2-1

March 4th 1989

4 years.

14.

We got there late and had to go in through the home turnstiles and were led through the back into the away end adjacent.
Think I paid £3 towards the petrol. Chalkie bagged a double.

Also Ipswich.

Lost 3 or 4 nil.

Towards the end of our last season in Championship so I guess the early months of 2000.

At least 10 years, couldn't get to an away game until I passed my driving test, this was days after passing my test

17

Nothing memorable about the game, we were shit as per most that season. I guess the "highlight" was driving on the M25 for the first time.

You have basically answered my reason for starting this thread.  My two (aged 7 & 6) are begging me to go to an away game.  I'm tempted, but just a little apprehensive.

That's brilliant.  I had a similar experience (without the slap) on second away game...which was vs Rovers at Twerton Park at the start of the following season.

Bristol Rovers 3-4 STFC (http://swindon-town-fc.co.uk/MatchCentre.asp?MatchID=19930102)

I was in the away end with a Rovers-supporting mate.  We went 4-1 up, and managed to hold on to 4-3 win at the end.  I seem to remember that one of Rovers' late goals came as a result of a free kick awarded because Diggers handled the ball from a back pass.  The back pass rule had been introduced just weeks before.

What do you remember about the day? Very little in all honesty, my mate driving us up there, and the stand behind the goal with Watford fans in looked huge!

Our son was 4 when he went to his first away game, it was at Reading.

Probably easier with one, but you will be savvy enough to keep them away from any issues.

Who was your first away game against?

In truth it was supporting Aberdeen at Hibernian in 1991 with my Dons supporting step-dad (4-2 win for Aberdeen).

For Swindon it versus Bristol City.

What was the score?

0-0

When was it?

1996

How long was it after your first home game?

About 5 and a half years after my first home game.

How old were you?

12

What do you remember about the day?

We wore the blue and black away kit.
It was an early Scott Leitch game.
Walking through some fighting on the way out.
Dad telling me to stop singing Town songs in case he was somehow targeted with a 12 year-old son with him.

My first ever Swindon game was away, at Wycombe. Only thing I really remember is that a) singing Swindon songs in the home end is not the done thing, and b) football is much better than shopping on a Saturday

Pretty sure that was my first away game aswell. I would have been 11. Only things that stick out for me were sitting in the City End, Wayne Allison getting a fair bit of stick & Peter Thorne heading just wide!! Would have been about a year & a half after my first home game!!

In fact it may have been the Swansea away game in the same season where Shaun Taylor scored the winner so whichever came first! Memories of that are Taylor's winner, my uncle jumping up to celebrate in the home end when it went in & the ball rolling under Bodin's foot to go out for a Swansea throw!!

Crystal Palace Away 73-74 Lost 2-6. Don Rogers tore us to pieces. First home game was the week after. I was 9 so everything was big and fucking scary, but the thing I remember most is my dad and his 2 mates pulling up in a pub along the A4 somewhere and getting pissed up whilst I froze in the car with my crisps!

Who was your first away game against? Nottingham Forest FA Cup
What was the score? 4-1 to Forest
When was it? January 1978
How long was it after your first home game? 2 years
How old were you? 16
What do you remember about the day? Bodmans coach from Devizes.  Loads of trouble in some service station on the M1 after one of our lot stoved the back window of a Southend United coach in.  Stones thrown at us by Forest fans in the ground.  One of our coach getting thrown in the Trent and therefore leaving late.  Still marvelled that we were playing THAT Forest team.

First away game against - Luton Town
What was the score - 2-0 to Swindon (FA Cup 3rd Round)
When Was it - 5th January 1980
How long after your first home game - 4 years
How old were you - 11
What do you remember about the day - My Dad thinking it would be safer to stand with the home supporters than the Swindon fans! And the Luton fan we stood next too getting angrier and angrier throughout the game as Luton were losing, but having to curb his swearing due to the no doubt annoying 11 year old next to him. Also remember the terracing being open at both ends and it seeming quite a big ground at the time, to an 11 year old anyway.

4-0 to us :)

January 1991

Going into the home pub before the game, being kept in the ground until 5.45pm and getting pushed down the terracing for ages when we scored.

I believe it was a rather insignificant game in our history.  A 5-0 defeat at Newcastle Utd in 1988 a good 6 years after my first home game at the age of 12.  On the plus side we went on some club organised coach/hospitality thing where you got taken to a restaurant pre game.

Newport County away, Boxing Day 1980ish.  Won 2-0, even with Andy Rowland in goal for most of the game.  I'd have been 11 so a good 7 years after my home debut.

We went in a 'lively' pub before the game, and as per some comments above, then went and stood in the home bit on the side as it was um, safer that way.

Swindon played all in blue, and when we got home the cat had done a poo behind the telly.  Then I played with my new Atari (?) for a bit.  Think we had a home game the next day too, proper Christmas.

Pretty much sums it up.  We parked up in the old livestock market next to Meadow Lane and had to walk past the back of the Trent End to that side terrace - scary shit at 16yrs old.  I think the trouble in the services was also because Millwall were away at Derby that day and we all arrived at the same time

The look on my mum's face when my mate's dad told her about going there in '87 before we set off. The near silence of their lot even when winning. Thinking how loud we were(although that now demolished stand had great acoustics). Thinking their fans obviously don't understand self-deprication as they applauded when we sang, 'we're shit, and we're going down'.

The Man City cup game in the 90's at Maine Road.

Went with a few guys from Scotland (I lived in Edinburgh at the time) and we hung about after the game for a few beers. Vaguely remember taxis not wanting to come into Moss Side to take us to wherever we were staying. Pretty sure our eventual taxi broke down (but that could have been some odd dream as my memory is ropey at best!)

This was mine, Aldershot away Dec 82, 3 years after my first home game.

http://swindon-town-fc.co.uk/MatchCentre.asp?MatchID=19830120

The tradition of going to football on Boxing Day with my Dad, Uncle & cousin had started a year or 2 before, and this was the first one to be an away game. I was 10, my cousin was 12, so we got there fairly early to find a decent place to stand where we would be able to see. Moved from directly behind the goal as the sun was setting right in our eyes. Some time during the first half, it all kicked off behind the goal right where we had been stood, and when it started to move around to where we were now standing we jumped over the advertising hoardings and stood right by the side of the pitch, although to be honest for a 10 year old lad, the fighting was more interesting than a 4th division relegation scrap ! I did however get to sit in the dugout at half time for a Bovril & a Drifter.

What do you remember about the day?
Went up with mate on train and tube after school. As it was our first away game and we were more used to 8000 than 38000 we wildly underestimated time it would take to get there, get in etc etc consequently couldn't get in Swindon end so had to go in with home fans, meaning we were not able to celebrate Billy Tucker equaliser as much as would have liked. Stayed with auntie after game then back on train for school next morning. No way 16 year old could afford train fare never mind Arsenal ticket these days!

Next away game was Wolves Semi Final on supporters coach and that was definitely a very depressed journey home........

First away game in 1979 against Reading (coincidentally, my first ever game was the home game against Reading a few weeks earlier):

http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/MatchCentre.asp?MatchID=19800111

Score: Lost 2-1.
When was it? October 1979.
How long after first home game? A few weeks.
How old was I? 13.
What do I remember about the day? Rowland scoring the first goal that I'd ever seen "live". Apart from that, not much, other than the noise.....oh, and that Reading played in the same kit as QPR and Town played in the Liverpool kit (all red) so I pretended I was watching QPR v Liverpool....

I have always loved away games - the atmosphere always seems much better compared to home games. For years after those first 2 games I considered Reading our biggest rivals.

How long was it after your first home game?

What do you remember about the day?
The two Pompey away games have blurred into one! Definitely at one of them I managed to cut the lip of the bloke next to me while celebrating a goal. Also, either at one of these, or it could have been a later game at Fratton Park, a friend mistimed going through the turnstile and so had to climb over to choruses of suitable jeering.

Who was your first away game against?
Liverpool, in the Prem (assuming Wembley doesn't count)

What was the score?
Drew 2-2

When was it?
December 1993

How long was it after your first home game?
5 years, almost exactly to the day

How old were you?

What do you remember about the day?
The supporters coach getting met by police motorbikes outside the City, walking up through huge crowd, stopping off at the Hilsborough memorial, sitting in the front row of the away end, Anfield Road. The crazed, disbelieving, celebrations both times we went in front. The inevitable disappointment of the late equaliser and The Kop clapping us off.

Stoke, Boxing Day 96. 0-0. Shaun Taylor hit the bar. The terraces at either end of the Victoria Ground were huge. Great noise, terrible game.

I suspect that it was against Blackpool on the Saturday, November 10, 2001, Danny Invincible missed a penalty in the last minute and I had to stand in the away fans as the club would not post a ticket to a Lancashire post code.

Quite sometime after my first home game which was against Chelsea in the Simod cup in January 1988 - my dad struggled to park and we missed the first 2 goals! http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/MatchCentre.asp?MatchID=19881103

Not been to a home game since 1999 but been to a fair few away outings throughout the north.

Who was your first away game against?
Pompey

When was it ?
2 January 1989 (my second was 5 days later, also v Pompey)

I was there too.  First was our NYD League fixture (2-0 win) and second was FA Cup (1-1).  Two things I remember were sections of our fans shouting in squeaky voices at their manager in his flat cap (Ball) and that the curse of losing to STFC struck when he was sacked soon after losing to us in the replay

Cheltenham away September 2002
We lost 2-0
About four years after my first home game
I was 12
I'd been begging my Dad to take my to an away game and he relented seeing as this was so close to home, it was on a Tuesday night so it made it extra exciting knowing it was going to be under floodlights and that I would be home late! I had my Swindon window stickers in the car and was expecting great things! It was when they still had the terrace and I remember how different it felt to a home game being able to stand and chant and really feel a part of a crowd rather than a spectator.
The game was pretty rubbish! Only two things I can remember are Parkin sliding into Cheltenham's goalkeeper and the ref coming over and slipping into Parkin to send him off and still not having the sense to just give him a yellow seeing as how much water as on the pitch!! And then at the end of the game some of our players having a pop at the fans and the anger from our fans was palpable!
My Dad said it was one of the worst away games he's ever been to and is surprised I still wanted to keep going!

Vicarage Road is one of those grounds I've been to reasonably often....up until a few years ago we'd played them in league games more than any other club.  Interestingly in all fixtures we've played them 141 times, won 54, drawn 33, lost 54.  However we've a better goal difference.

We haven't played Watford in the 21st Century  :(

Before Preston it was Cardiff....now it's probably boringly one of the Prem clubs, my punt would be Liverpool.

I reckon it must be Liverpool, we played them early on at the CG in 93, and the Anfield draw was in December, the likes of WHU, ManUre, Everton, Spurs we played after.  Some like Villa and Chelsea we've had in the LC.

As regards Ipswich, I'm quite pleased we don't play them, since the Prem season our record v Tractor Boys reads P8 W0 D0 L8 F 4 A 25  :)

1st game - Mansfield away

result - 1-1, I cant remember who scored though (without looking it up I'd go for Colin Gordon as he always seemed to score at away games)

When was it - 1986

How long after your first home game - not sure probably about 8 years

how old were you - 15

what do you remember - the atmosphere.  The Police thought they were back in the Miners strike again.  The away end was packed, there are those iconic pictures of people on the trees watching, and the players coming back out after the game.

I was stood at the back near the clock, and by the time we had finished celebrating I was almost at the front.

Our coach driver decided the best way to get there was via Baker Street, and by the time we arrived Arsenal were already 1 up, the bloke on the turnstiles told us not to bother as they were already winning & were probably going to score 5, wish I'd seen the cunt after the game :)

The Nottingham police were drafted in that day in massive numbers and treated us like cattle, they were fresh from the flying pickets marches and really gagging for a fight that day, one bonus...leaving Mansfield in my old Fiat Strada we were allowed to speed through red lights at way over the speed limit with the police escort just to get us out of the town.....couldn't do that these days.

Great day out. We ran a coach from Faringdon. Got stopped by the police on the services who didn't want let us go to the footie. We had to empty all the alcohol which filled 2 black bin liners and out in the bin which the cleaners nicked. Coach got bricked coming into Mansfield. The coach emptied and ran Mansfield across the dual carriageway. Great Atmosphere. What a day out. The coach was organised by the now Supermarine chairman.

FA Cup 3rd round, Bristol City away

What was the score?

Lost 2-1

When was it?

Jan 1990

How long was it after your first home game?

just over a year (Brighton at home Sep 1988)

How old were you

16

What do you remember about the day?

Was on a school trip and everybody told under no circumstances were we to go to Ashton Gate....legged it down there, seemed to remember asking random punters where the away end was, some old brizzle bloke pointed me in the right direction and told me to shut the fuck up or I'd get myself killed. Chucked it down, soaking wet on the old open end where they used to put the away fans. Think we got a late goal. Legging it back to the town centre just in time for 5.45 to get the school coach back home. Bitten by the bug of away trips ever since.

Did the same questions with my daughter, Rotherham away under Di Canio, Jan 2012, won 2-1. At the old Don Valley, a kind of Bayern Munich Olympik Stadion-lite. What does she remember - so cold her feet were like blocks of ice. What do I remember, telling her that I'd had over 20 years of pain and suffering and she'd seen Matt Ritchie score a blinder after 20 minutes!

Glancing back at the motorway behind the away end and seeing a motorbike rider and passenger with red and white scarves and waving as they went by.
We were top of the league after that game and ended up being relegated.
Also trips to Bristol City, Reading, Oxford, Luton (FA cup) and Newport that season.

Many a good away day out has been spoiled by 90 minutes of football since then, but also lots of memorable moments
e.g. Birmingham (6-4) have made the pain and suffering, over the years, worthwhile.

That game at Brum was a cracker Easter Monday it i remember rightly.
We took so many up they opened up the segregation section to allow us all in.

4-1 down well into the 2nd half i know many an old boy left for the pub but we were too young to drink so stood it out. The rest is history the Brum fans were not happy and a few slaps handed out outside for good measure.
Oh happy days
