Title: 1001 Films You Must See Before You Die
Post by: Talk Talk on Sunday, January 24, 2016, 00:20:43
I got this book for my birthday that I have just picked up and started to have a look at.

Actually it is called "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" but hey, I'm English, not American  ;D

So do the TEF concur with the editors?

I thought of a few and then checked to see.

Apollo 13 - no
Badlands - yes
Goodfellas - yes
Dirty Harry - yes
Pulp Fiction- yes
Metropolis - yes
The Wolf of Wall Street - yes
The Matrix - yes

The films are chronological from 1903 to 2014

Post up yours if you can be stuffed. I will be back now and again to confirm  :beers:

Funnily enough just been through my collection with the wife, and she did only 17 shit of 200 even though she doesn't like blokes films.

My top 5 are : The good the bad and the ugly, Once upon a time in the West, Goodfellas, American Graffiti and Pretty Woman. Actually the last one is a lie, It's Life of Brian

Shawshank Redemption will be said though I think it's overrated.

For me:
Godfather I, II
City of God
Mullholland Drive
Boyhood
Eternal Sunshine..
Scream
Under the skin

Does it count documentary films?

Pulp Fiction
Indiana Jones (Raiders)
The whole of the most recent Batman series.

This was hard though, I love far too many films.

star wars
casino*

*panic selection, too much choice

obviously trainspotting won't be in an American book.

Stupid book.

I'm a bit confused, is it a list of recommended films chosen by someone for others to watch, or is it a bucket list of those the author hasn't seen but thinks they should?

Personally, there are no films that I think I should see, if they were that important, I'd have watched them already.

Personally, there are no films that I think I should see, if they were that important, I'd have watched them already.

It's in its tenth year of publishing. About 60 contributors distilled the list. The preface says "it is not intended as a best of collection...it is an attempt to refine the thousands and thousands of films ever made into those that have inspired and vanguarded...you may hate some of them but they have been included on merit"

I guess that there are loads of "Best 100 films" knocking around which are usually on box office ratings. This is somewhat different in its approach I think. To motivate to see interesting films that you would otherwise not know about perhaps.

Right, so a recommendation list for some decent less well known films. Do you underline them like engine numbers in an Ian Allan , when you've seen them?

There's already a few I've seen which I don't agree with and a few I think should be on there. The Cabin in the Woods is complete crap in my opinion (for example).

Nice...yes, any list type thing requires underlining, or at least ticking off, depending on the format. My CAMRA pub guide to Wiltshire, being one of my favourites.

Others are lists of LDP's and preserved railways.....traditional counties of Britain and Ireland visited; off shore islands of the British Isles visited; and ferry ports used for leaving our sceptred isle....and of course football grounds, extant and defunct.

I did that with the Brakspear's pub map yonks ago when I lived in that area. When they still had a brewery in Henley of course...

I'd like to add, no country for old men, full metal jacket, saving private ryan and Drive.
I would also add the original planet of the apes first three anyway and original mad max one and two, not so keen on three although 100% better than the latest one,

Other lists which I've been working on for years, include, stone circles and standing stones, Neolithic long barrows and Iron Age hillforts. I also had a phase of brass rubbing in Cotswold churches, but the locking up of churches put a stop to that.

Ownership of all the 204 Landranger OS maps is also an ambition, but the gaps have to be filled by finding them in charity shops, library kick outs etc, not by purchasing them from dealers.

I'm fortunate, that I don't have an obsessive personality, because there's a lot to still be done.

Quadrophenia.
National Lampoons Animal House.
The Wanderers.
The Warriors.
The Roaring Twenties.
Raging Bull.
Taxi Driver.
12 Angry Men.
It's A Wonderful Life.
Harvey.
The Great Escape.
The Italian Job (Original)
Get Carter (Original)
Rocky.
Stagecoach.
...............fucking hell, I could spend hours doing this.

The Muppet Movie  :D very Lynch-esque..
12 Angry Men is a brilliant shout.

For the record I do think the Shawshank Redemption is good, it's just not the best film ever.

I love documentary films but I'm not sure I'd add too many of my favourites to the list because they are heart breakingly depressing (Deliver us from evil, Black Tar Heroin: The dark side of the street, capturing the Friedmans)

In terms of foreign films, Christiane F. (Soundtrack by Bowie) And Y Tu Mama Tambien would make my list.

576 for me. Not sure I'd rate them all as 'Must see before you die'. A lot of them were oldies from the 30's, 40's & 50's; one of the benefits of growing up in the Seventies, when there seemed to be more black & white films shown on tv.

131 / 1160

Very poor.

If I included films I had started to watch but stopped/gave up I reckon an additional 50+
