I was thinking that. The coverage on Twitter has been brilliant for updates.

I remember the club call lines advertised on teletext, always sensationalised to get people to phone up - 'town linked to Premier star!!!'  Etc

This day was always going to come.  The media coverage was too fragmented.  Not sustainable.  My hope was that the outlets would consolidate in some way, but it was not to be.

Longer term, either the Adver will up its game or something/somebody else will emerge to provide updates.  There's a market there that needs serving.

Opportunity for the TEF to occupy that space if someone's prepared to do live updates from the ground! TEF-style honesty would bring the punters flocking to the site.

That's because you're a born optimist.

My only hope lies in the fact that I'm not going out walking in the glories of the Wilts countryside with an old mate of mine.

It's happened twice this season so far, Barnsley away, Fleetwood away. He's one of these smart phone types, with score updates coming in  :(

Why do it? A good walk ruined.

Apart from the penalty it's been a pretty even game.
Luke Williams can give the same team talk that he gives when we are 2 goals behind and the second half will be a piece of piss (4-1 Town) ;)

Massive...Bramall Lane is the sort of novern outpost where even our decent sides have struggled historically. To come away with a point after going one down suggests the players have the heart for the relegation scrap we are in. It's going to be close, but I am increasingly confident we will have enough to remain competitive towards the end of the season so we should have a fighting chance of avoiding the basement.

Great result though, I expected a bit of a dicking. Happy for BOO too, deserves it given how hard he's worked recently.

You're learning Chang....I would add that the fact that Shrewsbury showed unexopected signs of life has brought us back closer to the drop zone than what we were at the start of the day, so still plenty of work to do. Hopefully we may get some reinforcements in during this week.

Williams post match interview:

Disappointed not to win
Took an attacking stance
Got young squad that will make mistakes
expected boys to dominate the ball
Expected Sheff Utd would be happy to sit and defend
Give Yaser time and space he can start moves off tempted to change when they put a man on him but he was still getting the ball
Penalty - player was pushed going into the box turnbull stood his ground going into the box and ref gave penalty couldn't argue
players asked to play in the box not cross from byline as sheff utd mop them up all day
BOO - goal has been coming do his confidence good, he had ability to move ball in tight area
Doughtly has quality and is determined to work hard for the team
Didn't enjoy dropping Traore was difficult being first job as manager
Learning on the job of being manager, was clubs decision to appoint him, told he was best and safest option will give his all until told otherwise, enjoyed the performance
Will talk about new players with chairman - don't need many - got to be right type, got to fit into the group, will speak to chairman and bring in more of less players in

If the player you bet on doesn't make the bench, I think you get your stake back?

My 30/1 treble became a 9/1 double as the Murphy goal was void.

In case anyone cared.

On train home  & haven't read back but pretty upbeat after that. Thought we bossed the game & 2nd half we were the only team likely to score.  Sheffield are not a particularly good side, well organised and some decent players, but were negative when they went 1 up.  Not sure about the penalty, if anything thought it was outside the box.
Ajose & Obika were well marshaled and I really didn't know where we would find a goal.  Step up BOO, deflected shot 1-1. Nathan could/should have won it for us but slashed his shot wide where he could have taken a touch.  Happy with a draw and a decent performance.
Hope the guy who fell and hit his head is ok, looked nasty

Gritty, spirited performance, never stopped trying and fully deserved the point. boo was great, not just the goal but also the level of his contribution, haven't seen us for a couple of months and what struck me was how he was always making himself available and wanting the ball. Yas at times looked approaching last season's form, launching a lot of our attacks. Obika, didn't get much opportunity today but put in a shift. Special mention to Branco, great watching his battle with Billy Sharp, especially the dirty niggly bits and Rossi got the better of him in the end. As for the "massive" club we were playing, couldn't believe how little they offered. Their whole strategy after they went ahead was to sit back and do nothing. They were so deep at times they looked like the away team. Weird how things come full circle, it's exactly one year since the corresponding fixture last season at brammall lane, today's match played itself out in fairly similar fashion but we got something out of it this time around. We're broadly halfway between the playoffs and relegation, think we should be looking up the table rather than over our shoulders for the remainder of the season. Time to get off the train now, too many moaning blades ha ha!

BOO could become our next Byrne.
When Byrne first arrived he was being used as a right back and was pretty useless there to be honest, but he moved to wing back and developed into a great player. BOO is going the same way and with a bit of luck, could be just as effective as Byrne was.

It was always going to take a brand new side a while to gel and hopefully they now have. Who knows where we can finish in the league, if we can bring in some new faces before the end of January to bolster the squad I think we'll do fine.

Sounds like Kasim is somewhere back to his best. How was Doughty today for those that went?

Regarding Sheff Utd, I'm sure it was back when Danny Williams was still there I posted something on Twitter about t'blades putting 10 men behind the ball and got a hell of a lot of abuse for it.

With BOO, it's clear he's more of a forward player, but we've seemed bloody terrified to attack down the left at the CG for ages. Be nice if that could change and he could score a few more.

How can almost 19000 home fans make such little noise? having to watch that crap presumably. Went 1-0 up and then most of the game sat back to protect what they had. Really impressed with Doughty, got his tackles in and never stopped chasing. Boo took his goal well and was always available. Kasim was immense, back to his best. Comedy moment was Turnbulls effort from 30 yards but satisfying day out and good listening to blades fans on the way back to the car wishing they played football the way we had

Someone on the Sheffield forum liked Rodgers.

Can't argue with any of that, Billy my MOM though, usual 100% effort from him. Done ran miles and touched the ball about twice.
For the opposition, I was chuffed when they took off Anton Rodgers who I thought was mightily impressive, but look what happened. I have to say they were much better than I expected, and probably the best side I have seen this season, though we make a lot of sides look better than they are. Outplayed by Swindon fucking Town, outplayed by Shrewsbury Town, the list goes on. At least we got a point though, which was more than we deserved if I'm honest

Stuff like this really fucks me off. Blades on the whole seem to be decent fans and accept that they are where they are because they deserve to be, but being outplayed by a team in the same division (with the odd exception like Crewe) isn't that flabbergasting.

In any case, no matter what I think of him, a succession of managers has now thought he was worthy of a place. Better get used to it I suppose.

I warmed to the Blades fans in the days of The Robinettes....the only visitors who seemed to be genuinely excited by the hotch potch of barely pubescent girls, who gamely tried to do a cheer leading dance routine, at half time but just weren't very good.

I couldn't quite work if the Blades like them barely legal....or that the women of Sheffield are particularly grim, that being something of which I have no experience.

I warmed to the Blades fans in the days of The Robinettes....

When I am chairman, I'll bring back the Robinettes...

... I'll also bring back the Westler's hot dog stand and smoking in the Town End (because that's what football is supposed to smell like). I'll ban mobile phones so you have to buy a programme to look on the back to see who might be playing (Shaun Close on the bench, again..). I'd bring back the Shrivenham Road stand. And Jerel Ifil.

Other than that, good draw today. Feels like a win. Hope Doughty works out - feels like it's the right time for him to move. Have read some interesting interviews with him, mainly concerning his Dad (Nigel, the Ex Forest Chairman) dying and the impact that has had on his career - sounds the sort of personality any club would want in their squad.

The mobile phone idea is great. There's a girl I've sat with a few times (I hop all over the ground these days) who is constantly snapchatting pictures of the pitch and chatting on her phone. And it's usually turned up to a ridiculous brightness, so at evening games I can actually read her Facebook messages, or I would if I cared enough about Darren Beezley or whatever simpleton she's chatting to. Go away.

But the robinettes, noooo...

She's messaging the ex Watford right back?

There's an old boy who goes swimming at the Post House that I chat to regularly, he's an avid Town fan called Reg, it's not you, is it, Reginald?

No, that's probably the Steam, Reg. A decent pub, now sadly gone to pot...I liked the way the Polish barmaids would feed him and fret if he didn't turn up of an evening.

Sat at the back row right behind the goal with my lad.
Never saw you. Always enjoy Bramall Lane.

No, solo trip yesterday, got a couple planned with Phil though - Oldham coming up and maybe Cov. Agreed, it's a good trip, none of this 4 miles outside the town centre multiplex bollox. For future reference the boozer in Sheffield station is fantastic if you like your real ale, microbrewery on site.

1 It was BOO with the initial foul, not Turnbull.

2 It wasn't a penalty.

Yep. Turnbull was naive to stand his ground and offer a leg to fall over. It was all Sharp was looking for. The way he kicked the ball, he'd given up on a chance on goal. BOO nearly spoiled it for him by fouling too early. Bloody kids eh?

Bully Sharp needs some boots with studs in so he doesn't fall over all the time, but it wasn't him that fell over for the pen

Shame the highlights didn't show Branco's header back to Obika that I thought he was going to score with but just didn't get in the end of, wasn't sure how close he was to it

I can say it wasn't a penalty. You can actually freeze-frame the point where the contact was made, and the contact was made outside the box.

Can't be too harsh on the REF though, he doesn't have the advantage of being able to play it back.

Title: Re: Sheffield United v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Flashheart on Sunday, January 24, 2016, 20:14:56
On closer inspection. I think it's 50/50.

Don't know why anybody would be incredulous at the suggestion it was not though.

Title: Re: Sheffield United v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Flashheart on Sunday, January 24, 2016, 20:23:30
The initial foul was clearly by BOO, BOO pushed him. Play should have been called back for that........ except maybe the ref 'played on'. Considering they had the advantage that would have been the right thing to do.

The next contact I can see after that was with feet literally ON the line.

Don't we have a resident Ref here somewhere?

I refer the dishonourable members to my freeze-frame above, which clearly shows the striker falling before he got into the box.

Not that it matters. Our boys screwed up; it was easy to see how it could be given.

It was a penalty, but goes back to a conversion on here a few weeks ago.

Play the ball (doesn't matter where it goes) run into a gap between two defenders which isn't there (and the defenders have nowhere to go) and fall over theatrically - penalty!

Who would be a defender these days?

I'd agree with that, pretty much no negativity on Saturday in the away end, really got behind the team. From what I saw on the road of the shit run, ok there was a bit of cooper out etc, but then if 700 people travel 100s of miles each, it's understandable. It was mainly gallows humour anyway (the bloke at Blackpool pretending to warm up as a sub infront of the away end, at Millwall singing we're going to win the league). Wigan in October, first game where there were signs of recovery but we were still 2nd from bottom, fantastic atmosphere. Hope for the best, expect the worst, so anything other than nothing is a bonus seems to be the attitude. Hence the mental celebrations on Saturday for the equaliser (not least the bloke who managed hospitalised himself....). When it works, there's nothing better than watching us away.

Generally the away atmosphere is better. I dont go to that many aways because of work, although I yypically manage 10 or so in an average season - the only iffy one recently that I went to (and remember) being Colchester last season. Typically the moaning brigade don't come out on away days but for that I was sat behind some cunt who griped the whole match through.

We do have good fans amongst all the dross and when they are concentrated into a small area we can make a hell of a racket.

I don't know about that, just less of them, but because there are less fans anyway they seem to be noisier.

You've always had moaners, often they don't realise they're doing it, it's a kind of psychological release from their lives, but generally the travelling support does try and make a bit of effort.

Two form teams (on paper) to clash on Saturday then. Hopefully Winnall will have been snapped up or tonight's booking is significant (straw clutching).

The great thing at the moment is that there are several teams above us that are within three points. Despite dropping down, there are still five teams between us and the relegation zone, with three of them having played a game more.

Yep we've got a bit of breathing space, and our fate is in our hands. We've  got to play 7 games v teams currently below us,  that's 3 at the CG and 4 away, need to make sure we do better v the likes of Oldham ColU Blackpool and Fleetwood than we did earlier in the season.

Barnsley have had a funny old season, a steady start, stuffed us in mid September and backed it up by beating Gills, then lost 8 in row in the league, with added cup defeat to Altrincham lobbed in for extras.

They have now won 6 in 7, including the 5 in a row, the only defeat v Wigan. No idea why this has happened, maybe a lot of young players?

Madness...you need to go back 80 years to 35/36, to find a comparable season, then we finally managed a home clean sheet v Luton on March 21st.....rather like London buses we then had 2 in the next three.

That season we finished 4th bottom, fortunately being Div 3 South, only 21st and 22nd applied for re-election.

What stand were you in for the Luton game ?

Barnsley have had a funny old season, a steady start, stuffed us in mid September and backed it up by beating Gills, then lost 8 in row in the league, with added cup defeat to Altrincham lobbed in for extras.

They have now won 6 in 7, including the 5 in a row, the only defeat v Wigan. No idea why this has happened, maybe a lot of young players?
Based on our form over the last 10 games I'm more interested in teams results above us

 Barnsley are above us.
