Title: Swindon V Oldham official matchday thread
Post by: inept and tiresome on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, 09:21:28
It's  nearly 10.30 and nobody can be arsed to start one of these.
Surly a new level of apathy.
3 - 1 to Oldham.
With no expectations of a positive result of any kind, I'm looking forward to this.

We need to get some Power songs going. If he stays in charge for more than his 91 days:

"Taxed in the morning, you're getting taxed in the morning"

Could be a goer.

Do we actually have 18 players today or are we looking at a minimal bench?

Oldham are pretty tough to beat... But they win even less than we do.

Depends who we've got back but I'd like to hope we'll get close to a draw at least.

My brother in law is over from the US for a rare visit and has proposed taking my two lads to the game for a treat. Not sure how to explain this to him .... so we'll be there watching a resurgent Town dominate Oldham as we cruise to a magnificent 4-0 win. Or some such.

Oldham are 6/4. I'll be softening the inevitable blow by throwing a tenner at that.

Hard to see us scoring many. You don't tend to when you consistently only manage 1 or 2 shots on target over 90 minutes. Despite the bulk in the middle of Branco and El Abd our weakness at full back means we are always likely to concede.
Going to be a miniscule attendance tonight but if we can get the likes of Brophy and maybe Jordan Stewart and Jeremy Balmy running at people and taking people on then, maybe just maybe, as in the 2nd half against Peterboro we can get the crowd onside and generate a bit of excitement. 2-1 Oldham in front of 5794 with Branco netting for us

We will snatch it at the death after going 1 down in the opening 10.

Occasionally you get a comedy result in a shit season.....I remember the demise from Div 2 campaign, when we beat Blackburn 2-1. They had a side stocked with players who'd racked up shed loads of Prem games, many of whom used to be walking answers to quiz questions like Ashley Ward and Nathan Blake.

Others like Jason Wilcox, had played in their Championship side....we had Frazer McHugh.

Lurking in the Rovers ranks though was Simon Grayson...who up until May must have dreaded the sight of STFC as both player and manager....Grayson obliged with a comedy OG, and Frazer sensibly just hoofed the ball up for George Ndah to chase to some effect.

Track record versus Oldham recently does not make for good reading. Will take a point with our depleted squad. Probably down to the bare bones with the crowd as well due to Champions League on TV and why the Football League arrange it so is beyond me.

Roger Palmer *shudder*

I'd settle for a repeat of the game in 66, when we beat them 6-3 at the CG....the Don getting a hat-trick, the joint highest aggregate scoreline at the CG, I'd ever seen, until May.

I don't think Lee will settle for less.

My first thought was fair enough, he's not press any more and should pay like everyone else.
But I understand he's working for a news agency now, in which case it's a bit naff of the club to deny entry like that.

Hopefully it's a simple case that someone didn't get the message re: new employment.

So all this shit about losing the dressing room and not playing for the manger. Load of bollocks, they just are very poor with no fight led by cunt in chief Rogers.

Not sure where any of them learnt their football but it must have been at the "Agression not allowed as it hurts" school. Rogers refuses any ball that isn't in the right place to make him look good especially if he has to challenge for it or even head it.

fucking hopeless. Easy away win for Oldham unless we get lucky

Interview bingo:

We played ok I thought.

There was only one goal in it.

It's fine lines in football.

Oldham came here and did well.

They'd done their homework.

Dunny's a good lad isn't he.

On another day it could have been different.

The job now is to focus on Saturday.

They'll be in tomorrow, working hard.

Nicky took his goal well.

It will do him the world of good.

There are positives to take out of this.

You can't switch off just after you've conceded.

You're at your most vulnerable just after you've conceded.

There is nothing flawed about my model and my paranoid dictatorial reign over the club and surrounding media. I do not have trust issues.

And I would imagine they were all season ticket holders.  Nobody's going to pay on the gate at the moment unless they've got a screw loose. The crowds will only get worse as Christmas approaches.

Absolutely awful.  Some of those players shouldn't be anywhere near a League 1 team.  It really seems like we're just going to have to wait for the injured players to return, but we could be well adrift by then.  We're in big trouble no question.  Very depressing.

Hoping Power realises some his recruits are just plain shit and are just not cut out for league one football.
Going to probably end up eating humble pie at the end of the season but even when the regulars are back playing again I can't see it getting any better. The players bought in on paper should be good but they don't play together as team

Abysmal doesn't even begin to describe the Town performance tonight!  Kasim was a total wanker and eventually cost us the second goal - his performance tonight was absolutely awful and must be dropped if Robert is fit.  Too many triangles at walking pace and then giving the ball away, mostly by Kasim.  Why, oh why, was Gladwin playing far left, he should have been centre midfield and trying to influence the game but he was almost as guilty as Kasim for giving the ball away.  No engine room whatsoever, no bite, no tackles in midfield.  A poor, poor performance.

He's probably right though to a degree. I bet he knows more about what's going  on at SN1 at moment but obviously has to keep stum.
Things haven't been right since the end of the season, the silence at the club, the will he or won't he go saga with Cooper and Wednesday and the club refusing to give any clarity on the matter.

I had an email this morning from the club promoting tonight's game for £23 in the side stands,  and 40% off hats. With the comments on here and the expected performance I don't even think I'd have gone if I received a complimentary ticket.
I went to two matches last season and I just don't like the way we play. It's boring. Tippy, tappy side to side and hardly anyone shoots. We need some rousing performances.

I left at 65 mins cold and thoroughly dejected how Power can take any positives out of that is beyond me. We look very poor all over the pitch no cutting edge no creativity so depressing and Power seems to not want to change the tactics, you can play out of defence when you have decent players but when you are playing the reserves you have to change the style of play.

Well where to start....

Vig - kept us in the game with a couple of saves
Barry - pointless him being out there
El abd and Branco - didn't really do anthing wrong but then thats difficult when you just past sideways
Boo - least he sometimes ran at players but delivery was shit
Brophy - never seen a more one footed player in my life. Should never play on the right
Traore, kasim, rodgers - they should never play together again. Same type of player where the passes are all either backwards or sideways at a pedestrian pace
Gladwin - poor game but then is played out of position. Play him behind Ajose!
Ajose - excellent finish for the goal at the second attempt. Other than that no service what so ever

Why Stewart never came on I will never understand!

Kasim clearly doesnt give a fuck atm and he's really getting on my tits. gladwin must play just behind the striker and give the lad stewart a try on the wing.

Unfortunately this is getting to the laughable stage. Be amazed if there was more than 6k there today

Hes not give a fuck since february tbf

OK, well, the first 20 minutes were OKish, we sort of tried to pass with a bit more pace than previously, but had there not been a double wonder save from Vigs we'd have been 1 down. In fact, the defence looks as shit as ever.

However slowly but surely we returned to type, and after Oldham scored it was dire up to half time. I said earlier in the thread it was like shadow boxing, not being arsed to make a tackle and devoid of any quality.

The relief of half time was over far too quickly.

The second half was even worse than the first, Ajose's goal aside. We were fucking awful. I'd rate this current 11 worse than Jimmy's and Iffy's and anything else I can remember over the last 25 years. At least those fuckers tried. This team can't even be arsed to do that.

Kassim is a fucking waste of a shirt. International my arse. He doesn't currently deserve a move. Though I'd happily drive him there.

Traore is just plain shit. Talk about flattering to deceive.

Brophy at least looked half bothered. Thought he tried hard despite his limitations.

Balmy is a joke player. Shockingly poor tonight. Can only think Power was on a bet to proclaim his sub performance good.

Which twat thought it would be a good idea to stick Gladwin on the wing? Wasted.

Ajose looks lazy, but he scored a good goal and isn't a loan striker.

The defence is absolutely shocking. Piss poor.

Vigs had a good game,
-----------------------
Totally pissed off and disillusioned. Then I had to listen to Power's bollocks on the radio. He's wrong. It was 70 minutes of pure shit. End of.

Cunts.

Instead we got sideshow Balmy, whose performance showed us why he didn't cut it at Oxford U or Oxford City for that matter,

Summary of game - We were shit.

I'm a little concerned/bemused by the post match interview. What I took from it, was that Cooper had abandoned the 'Brand' of football that Power demands, and the players need to be reintroduced to it. I'm not sure what Cooper had introduced in it's place, it's not like he'd gone long ball and it looked suspiciously like last season's football with worse players.

Also that, as JFW had said on here, Williams hasn't been coaching (not allowed to?)

So, if Cooper had basically turned into Colonel Kurtz, how the hell did Power not know and why had he not done something about it earlier?

What the fucks going on?

Yup, basically agree with Batch's points, although El-Abd had a good game and only him and Vigouroux can come out of the game with any credit.

Rodgers, Traore & Kasim were all absolute dogshit.
I don't mind losing, but losing like that, with no desire, passion or urgency is a real kick in the teeth for the fans.

I usually look for the positives in a defeat, but there weren't any tonight, just can't believe how bad we are currently and 11/10 on Coventry at the weekend is buying money.

I think before the game started anyone could have told them that kasim/traore/rodgers midfield 3 is a horrific trio to play together.

Gladwin is our best player currently fit and his best position is behind the striker. Fucking play him there!!

Ajose needs someone to create chances for him and no one will be able to do that in the 11 we had other than gladwin so he needs to see the ball and he won't do that on the wing.

It's difficult to even get angry about it.

It wasn't awful it was just nothingness.

Barry was God-awful, but my it was Kasim that got my dander up. Half-arsed doesn't come close to describing his performance, culminating in the cock-up that handed them the winner.

Make no mistake, even with our 'better' players back we will struggle as something has infested our club that will be difficult to shake off.

Disappointed not to see Jordan Stewart

Actually Abd and Branco individually weren't shocking or anything. But as a combined defensive unit we look woeful.

And one of them should have cleared it before the second goal though (edit: or was it Kassim).

And take off BOO and put Brophy in his position. Saying that Barry couldn't be arsed going pass the half way line. He is totally out of his depth.

I'd like to know how you can 'reward' Kasim with the captaincy, after his alleged 'strop' on Saturday. Doesn't do much for team morale.

This is getting so depressing.

The only thing our opposition need is to need to score a goal, once they have one they are comfortable and can coast through the game so easily they can use the time to consider such things like whether they should finally stop taking their tea with sugar or if they should repaint that spot on the wall where their toddler decided to draw a cow or keep it because they kind of like it and it reminds them of simpler times.

As soon as, like tonight, we somehow find ourselves back in the game it is so so easy to get their noses in front again, they didn't even have to work for it.

We're the easiest 3 points in football at the moment and every team in the draw for the FA cup is desperate to get us.

We have so many players out and have way too many players playing more minutes than they expected to all season already but if there's one thing football fans cannot abide is a lack of effort.  We can forgive all manner of things but to not give a shit is unacceptable.

I remember Iffys first three games in charge, we lost of all of them. Then away at Brentford we basically changed formation/tactics and shut up shop from the word go.
We got a boring 0-0 but it was our first point in 9 games (the last being that 4-2 win over Yeovil with tea towel chants and people climbing stands) but it was exactly what we needed.

We only lost two of the next 15, ok we got alot of draws in that period but it at least stopped the slide and steadied the ship.

Sometimes you need to do what you need to do in this divison. If that means grind out a result then grind out a result

Robert claiming he will be fit for Saturday, Turnbull will be back, Obika probably (he was touch and go for last night apparently).  A bit of hope, would love to know what has been going on at Calne with Williams apparently being removed from coaching.  Kasim did not play on Saturday claiming injury yet was given the captain's armband after an MRI scan showed that he didn't have an injury.  Snub for Branco in removing the captain's job from him yet he - despite his limitations - is not one who should have the finger pointed at him as letting the side down.  Kasim certainly let the side down last night!!

There was a slight improvement last night.... Until their first goal. Then heads dropped. The biggest issue we have isn't the style of play, it's the personnel available. Of those on the pitch only the central defenders and goalkeeper earned their money. Inexperience from many showed, but Kasim's 'couldn't give a fuck' attitude was the biggest disappointment. The sooner we get players back the better.

Kasim worst game ever for us. Summed up by his piss poor half arsed free kick in first half. Even my 9 year old knew it was certain to end up in the seats half way up the Stratton Bank. He may offer virtually nothing else but as he can occasionally muster a half decent effort surely Rodgers should be taking them

Desperately looking for any sort of positives I was more impressed with Ajose than any other time I've seen him this season. He received the usual zero support or service but did keep his head up and keep working away and deserved his goal for that at least. Other than that Vigoroux being voted man of match for home game v a very ordinary Oldham team surely says it all

Last night showed that a basic 442 of average players willing to work hard both when in possession and when the opposition has possession gives you a good chance of getting 3 points.

Town's (Power's) set up showed that you'd be lucky to get 1 point at best.

I'm struggling to understand how our style of play is supposed to achieve the best chance of winning game. Pundits Hockaday and Alan Mac can see the failings, the fans can see the failings, so why can't Power?

Power had better let the new manager set the type of play, or we'll be in a relegation dog fight from now until Easter.

I thought El Abd and Branco coped quite well with their attack considering the lack of support they received from the rest of the team.

A midfield trio of Rodgers, Kasim & Traore just doesn't work, all too similar, none of them get stuck in or create enough.
Traore was the best of bunch but still did not have enough influence on the game.
Kasim was truly shocking, his decision making at times was beyond belief and I lost count with the amount of times he gave the ball away cheaply.
Rodgers was just Rodgers, nothing else to say on him really.

Brad Barry and Boo look like they are out of their depth and could do with a season or two at Conference\League two level.

Vig's made some important saves but again I think a season at League 2 level would help him.

I was pleased for Ajose, he took his goal very well...It was the first decent ball we put forward to him in 4 or 5 games..It shows what he can do if you give him a bit of service.

Overall a bad performance (no surprise really) & with the attitude of some & the quality of others I fear and feel we are going down this season.

I wish I shared your optimism. You're right though the problem is the personnel available. The Power strategy is high risk, and this season a dodgy recruitment summer and some misfortune has found us out.

What is quite scary, is that we've only played 4 top 10 teams, and we've yet to hit any inclement weather or a dodgy pitch. We need 40 points from 32 games, so something like 12 wins and 4 draws would do it.

Sounds easy enough doesn't it, but to set a context, we won 16 from this stage last season.

He'll have to put in more bloody effort than he did last night then. Lost count of the number of times he just didn't react as a ball sailed past him. They weren't even half chances, much less good chances, but I'd like to at least see him feign an attempt to win the ball.

2nd goal is horrific. Barry needlessly gives ball straight to Oldham player, and follows that up with a too short hospital pass to Branco which he just about clears to Kasim who then carelessly returns it far too far in front of Branco. Balmy doesn't bother to track back allowing Oldham full back all the time he needs to cross which Rodgers caught wrong footed stretches for but rather than clear presents Oldham with winner on a plate. Only Branco and clearly pissed off Vigoroux look in anyway bothered by fact that 2 minutes after Ajose goal gave us unexpected glimmer of hope we completely gift them a winning goal.

Jesus what an awful goal. I count six mistakes from us in the build up.

Been a critic of our insistence on short pass outs from Vig, but our goal came from just that - Vig, then 2 passes later Ajose scores.

Reminded me a bit of one of our goals at Orient last season.

Ajose wont create his own chances but he will score when chances are made for him. Is it any surprise we have struggled to create with a midfield of Traore, Kasim and Rodgers.

The reverse of that, of course, should be a tighter defence.

Therein lies our major problem.

not sure if I've mentioned it, but the one thing that me mad with rage yesterday was our total reluctance to put in a tackle when losing.

it was crying out for someone to lead by example, even if that someone got a yellow card for their troubles. kasim should be that man, but if not then I hope to fuck LT is back soon.

in fact the only positive response I saw was for a few minutes after the sarcastic cheering after we had a shot.

A scum supporting work colleague said as much after our Derby defeat.
He said we played alright, they played well - but their play matched the occasion. They were committed and wanted it more. They werent afraid to put tackles in but we were.
Even a shit player just to kick people would be an improvement.

It's interesting how similar this season is looking to 00/01.  At that stage we had 12 from 14 and were in the relegation zone. We managed to get the magic 52, just enough with Rovers' last week implosion. The extra 40 were made of 10 wins and 10 draws. Kingy more or less went into grinding mode when getting the job about this time....kicking provided by Sol Davis.

Good luck to Power if he thinks we can play our way of this....it's brave.

All true but should add that Branco also had a good chance to clear at the start of the move and Kasim did look upset about the goal with his hands over his face and a bit of an argument with Ajose as they went back to the centre spot.

Coventry haven't won a league game at the CG since 1960, of course not that many played in the intervening years.

Our goal shows how simple it can be. 4 passes to set up Ajose.

And a lovely composed finish

Cracking game. Local TV highlights pundit Neil Warnock said a lot of good stuff about us that night - probably the only time I quite liked him.

Sol Davis was fucking ace. Went on to have an ok Championship career didn't he? Luton? Can't remember.

Solid left back who isn't scared to be a bit dirty is a bit of a rarity at our level. Seems a long time ago now, but he was alright with the ball at his feet too?

It can't have been a huge gap until his replacement was David Duke.

BOO is so bad, I found myself yearning for Callum Kennedy. Likewise with Anton Rogers/Bobby Howe... and I hated Bobby Howe.

that last one is odd, because "bobby Howe's sexy football" was going around my head after the pdc chant went up.

I think you've misunderstood the Williams way. There is no such thing as a defender, they are all ball players full of flicks and tricks and one touch football judged on pass completion stats. Rogers being a prime example of this.

Its all zonal defending marking the space, no actual tacking or first time clearances, no nudge in the back, no clipping of ankles, nothing.

Another thing worth mentioing is the fact that Ojamaa didn't even get off the bench when we were crying out for a bit of creativity. He's been a massive disappointment so far. It wouldn't surprise me to see a mutual parting of ways within a couple of weeks if he doesn't manage to turn things round!!
