don't propose, let your fiancée accidentally drop the engagement ring of her finger into a canal, then get sick from the dodgy water diving in  (and failing) to retrieve it. as happened to the wife's colleague's friend a couple of weeks ago.

Venice is the best city on earth (or water). Take a wander down the back streets for off the beaten track shops, bars & eateries. Doges Palace is a must. Go to St Mark's Square around 7 or 8am to have it to yourself. Nightmarishly packed during the day. Grand Canal cruise is excellent and maybe a ferry to some of the outlying islands e.g Tchaikovsky's burial place.

Venice is simply stunning!

Take the train from the mainland. Arriving at the station and walking straight out to the grand canal is the way to do it, not the big car/coach park.
I'll second the suggestion of the smaller islands. Murano and Burano are worth the boat trip, far fewer people around.

Totally agree that any visit to Venice should include arriving by train - a must - if you want to get away from the people wander behind the station area - no yellow signs - just walk about getting lost. Otherwise get the water bus and do a circuit getting off where ever - don`t bother with a map impossible to follow.

I arrived by train too. Great sense of antici..............pation going along the causeway across the lagoon.

Doesn't it stink? Also take a snorkel as it is sinking.

Sing the cornetto advert song in the main square.

I think it's arguably the most amazing place I've ever been. And to be able to say that in the face of what was possibly the worst holiday of my life (also my birthday present) accompanied by a soul-suckingly miserable cow on their period means it must be incredible.

As someone who is scared of bridges, I'd have to say Venice isn't on my top holiday list...

that's an unusual phobia. Is it the fear of falling off?
