On an interesting note, went on the Coventry fans forum and they said they would pick anyone but us to draw against. Home or Away.

Bit of bother we had with them last year no doubt.

London club away. Is that even possible?

London club away. Is that even possible?

Barnet and AFC Wimbledon were knocked out.

Our possibilities are...
Bristol Rovers
Coventry City
Oxford United
Exeter City
Plymouth Argyle
Wycombe Wanderers
or Yeovil Town.

I want Oxford Home but I can see Yeovil away happening.

Atmosphere, the occasion, the possibility of dominating in our main derby game.

I live in Chipping Norton, so I'm quite familiar with the hatred.

Then they'll still be in League 2 with a three sided stadium looking like walking piss stains.

They might be in League Two, but Michael Appleton is making his side play like a member of the Premier League elite

There is something unexpected going on at one of the country’s oddest football clubs.

Oxford United – once owned by Robert Maxwell, located in a three-sided carbuncle of a stadium – are playing some of the best football around. Embarked on the longest unbeaten run in all four divisions, their flexible, fluid passing game will be showcased this lunchtime on live television when they travel to Bristol Rovers. And the club manager is convinced viewers will be pleased. “You can’t guarantee a result,” Michael Appleton said. “We’re trying to guarantee a performance that’s enjoyable to watch.”

Did anyone watch them today? That Kemar Roofe looks good, took his goal well.

I'm not sure they're one of the best footballing sides in England as that recent Telegraph article implied but they played 'the game' well and by that I mean, going down 'injured' at the right times etc. Nothing wrong with it but it was glaringly obvious throughout.

There was a spell in the late 90's/early 00's that we use to play them quite regularly, but that has disapated because we don't play them that frequently. Rivalries will be in 'fashion' based on how frequently we play a team.

Only 14 years because the fuckers were out of the league for almost half of them.

My thoughts on the matter from a post in another thread about 6 months ago.  Views haven't changed.  The only thing that has is another season has got underway so we've now been in the same division as them for just one season out of the last 15.  The Swindon/Oxford rivalry is a shadow of what it used to be.

I think it's something to do with having been in their division for only one season (2011-12) out of the last 14.  In all of the other 13 seasons, we have been playing at least one division above them.  Fair enough, they've beaten us each time we have played them recently...but even the 2011-12 games are become a bit of a dim & distant memory now.

The fact is that the Oxford rivalry does not mean as much these days, especially to our younger fans, as it used to.  We have played them 4 times in the last 14 years; 23 times in the 14 years before that (1987-2001); and 15 times in the 14 years before that (1973-87).  And 14 years before that, they didn't even exist.

About how they are better then Swindon, and complaining that the town has a lot of Town fans...

I find it a bit odd seeing Oxford fans drinking in an Arkell's pub too, but to be honest it's the problem of having a town that's half/half in terms of support.

To be honest, there's a mix of both. I know some people who are generic Oxford fans and others who are die-hard Swindon fans. The postie is a Swindon fan too, as are some of the local workmen.

When the Play Offs were on, there were plenty of Red shirts in the town centre as well.

You still get the glory hunter majority though.

One's in League One, one in League Two.
One has internationals (maybe), the other not (probably)
One play in the colour of blood and passion, the other urine and cowardice.

I attended College in Banbury, and the tutors there either supported Oxford or Coventry, with the third most supported being Liverpool.

I find that not many people support Villa, until you reach Birmingham. The Towns around Aston, Sutton Coldfield etc are rife with Villa support as one might expect.

Bloody brilliant.

Eric took his tiddlywinks team for a game against the duke of Banbury and friends. Our side won, however, Oxford claimed this was because some of their best players had already gone home(their tea was ready).

They got their revenge in a game of hide and seek in London. Rumour has it they didn't count all the way to one hundred, and as such the result is also disputed.

I loved going to the Manor. Comedy ground for the most part, but with proper home and away ends. The squeeze along the path behind the away terrace was usually 'fun', and I quite enjoyed the sense of threat before and after matches - not that I would ever want to get involved in any violence.

I was on a stag do with an Oxford fan a couple of years ago. He was a decent bloke - a normal lower league (and non league) footy fan who supported his local team, enjoying the good times and willfully suffering the bad times.

And the Kassam ISN'T a comedy ground?

Was wearing my Town shirt to the Southbrook pub for an after-game meal. Started chatting with a guy, apparently he was a teacher for one of the culprits of the pitch burning that happened all those years back; when he said he taught the guy that did it there was genuine pride in his voice.

Aside from the twattery that happens, this fixture can be quite memorable in terms of well meant mischief.

Their hatred of us has always remained constant however ours has always been confused with that of Bristol and Oxford.
Only one rival as far as I'm concerned.
Mind you as has already been mentioned away following from both sets of fans during the later 70's and 80's was very poor probably due to the trouble.
I have not missed a derby game since 1975 and most pass with little trouble, sadly always a few from both clubs acting like pricks.
4 games without a win is far too long however having only witnessed the scum winning once on home soil I can live with that.
Forever in our shadow. Mind you we have had some cracking games with them over the years and used to enjoy going to the Manor. The Kassam is awful, dull, and everything I detest about new built grounds. Sadly for our friends most of them agree.

I detest the JPT however as its against Oxford I can't give it a miss although the thought of losing still has an effect as any game against them matters in my opinion. I can't see both teams fielding weak teams either and it's a game both clubs could probably do without.

And the Kassam ISN'T a comedy ground?
No. It is not a comedy ground. It's worse - a shit design in a shit location that has no redeeming features whatsoever.

The good thing about the Manor was the choice of pubs. We used to walk passed the hospital, then the church and there were 3 or 4 decent boozers. Only ever had trouble once before a Simod cup tie or somesuch.

Think we pissed it 4 nil and a couple of scummers had sore heads!

Only thing it's got going for it is that it's better than the old Withdean ground.
Terrible views and difficult to get to. At least the Manor had 7 sides.

The Withdean, while being pretty awful, always had the feel of a temporary home. The Kassam appears to be a permanent albatross. I'd take the Manor over both of them.

It is? I've been talking to an Oxford fan on Twitter who's involved in their display. It's been just shy of a friendly conversation. Much prefer this to the childish insults and boring bickering all over social media in the build up to a match.

I'm very excited to have two opposing tifos at the same time. I'm reserving all my yellow scum insults for the day.

They've raised about £650 for theirs so far.

I'd try the coach if I was going.  I think it's hilarious that the main public transport option (ie the train) dumps you more than 5 miles from the ground.  How is that acceptable?  For those then taking a cab to the ground, I doubt it would take a lot longer if you cabbed it from Didcot instead.  Would not be much more expensive and you'd avoid a whole lot of aggro.

Everything about that ground is wrong.  All of it.

I went to all the games at the CG in the 80s and most in the 70s.

I honestly don't remember them taking the TE. I remember battles with Arsenal and Bristol City at the corner of the Shrivvy and the TE.
, but that was in the 70s. Surely in the 80s there was segregation and the away fans were in the Shrivvy/Stratton Bank corner.

In the 80's/90's they never bought enough to fill the away end, let alone to 'take the Town End'.

Am I the only one who doesnt give a shit if they ever did 'take the town end?'  I find it hilarious seeing the old farts who thought it was big and hard to have a fight in the 70's still banging on about it.

The children who claim to be still doing it now I also find pathetic.

All this 'we took the Townend' crap. What used to happen was the Oxford fans would turn up at 1:30 when the gates opened and go into the Townend. Just before kick off the home fans would leave the pubs and enter Stratton Bank. They would all then mass at the corner of the Townend and Shrivvy Road and then push the Oxford fans towards the North Stand side. You would then end up with the Townend half and half with both sets of fans with the Police in the middle. This happened with most matches, not just Oxford.

That's the first time I've been on that site for a while - and what strikes me is just how civilised things are on there compared to the way it used to be.  The Oxford fella who married in to the Swindon supporting family has it about right:

Quote from: the Oxford site
Truth of the matter is the 'atmosphere', for want of a better word, has been diluted by the rarity of the fixture and also from the Swindon perspective, more of a 'couldn't care less' attitude. Having married into a Swindon supporting family does give me a different outlook TBH.

Bragging rights and general p!ss taking is the order of the day now, and rightly so. There is no place for the knuckledraggers these days.

The intensity is no way near what it used to be.  And neither will it return until such time as we start playing them again on a regular basis.  The bile, vitriol and hatred originated mainly in the 1970s when we were playing them practically every week.

Not too worried, as some of these players don't perform at their best. It'll be 50/50. Oxford naturally have less quality than we do anyway.

SAS Travel are so hard to get ahold of, I've been calling them during their "Open Hours" at 7-8 on Tuesdays and Thursdays and still can't get through. Anyone got any info on getting in touch with them?

I rang during the day and left message on answer phone with how many tickets etc and contact number.
They rang back that evening.

Or you can try via twitter

There's plenty of seats available in the home end.

If I had the faintest idea what any of their stands were called, I'd suggest that you 'take' one of them.

Don't suggest that, they might take a fence :)

Can we ask for Gurnham Singh to referee and recreate when Beauchamp got kicked all over the CG and Singh just let the players get on with it?

What a very odd thing to do, I assume its supposed to provoke something but not sure what, one was a player who showed himself so pathetic that he couldn't leave home as a grown man and the other one never actually played for us at all?

From Billy Bonds, his manager at West Ham

Interviewed some years later, Bonds described the signing as “a total disaster” and pulled no punches in his assessment: “He said he couldn’t settle at West Ham, that the club was too big for him. The boy was a total wimp, and it was disastrous for the club…. What could I say to the kid? I couldn’t threaten him. I just told him he’d better keep his nut down because the fans weren’t going to be too happy with him.”

Keep his nut down :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

In Harry Redknapps first book he said beauchamp wanted the value of his contract (350k) paid to him before leaving west ham. Before he even played a game

There's a particular irony with both Joey and James, that their refusal to move against the wishes of the club, considerably fucked the club up.  More so in the case of Joey, as Forest wanted to buy him for £800K....we'd have been due a slice, but the extra could have kept them out of the hands of Kassam.

In the case of James, it's been many years since they produced a saleable asset and the £250 K would have been money down the drain by PdC for essentially a Conference player, who soon found his level for nothing. Perhaps with the bit of money to spend Wilder could have got them into PO's for the first time.

Beauchamp's a funny one.  Became a popular 'hate' figure very quickly after heading back to Oxford.  But he never was for me.

He was the ultimate confidence player (who responded well to Gorman's 'arm round the shoulder' approach to management) and, yes, he blew hot & cold.  But I do remember that, a lot of the time when he wore the red & white, he was really rather good for us.  Not up to the standards of Summerbee, who he effectively replaced.  But very useful.

Bumchum was actually a very good player...if rather overweight and defeatist when he lost the ball and wouldn't track back.

Nice bloke though who I shared a few pints with back in the day, suffered a lot from pre match nerves.

Could have stayed and been a hero but unfortunately many town fans didn't like him and abused him which didn't help his or the clubs cause.

Never forget his one great game for us away at Charlton in the League Cup when him and JAF won the game for us with 2 fantastic performances in a 4-1 win.

Probably because he is first player many think of when they of the Scum players. Coupled with him leaving from us straight to them. A real pantomime villain.

He had ability. That's as good a praise as he'll get from me.

I seem to remember quite liking Joey when he was with us, decent feet.  I also loved the game where he go kicked all over the shop when he returned.  A right little wall flower though.

Firstly it's not a poll, just some hacks opinion.  It's probably fair enough to say that Oxford fans define themselves by a dislike of STFC, but there are many Town fans who aren't bothered, as there are some who are.

We've only played them one season in league football in the last 14 or so years, a bit like Reading, but we've played The Biscuitmen 140 times in league football.....whereas just 50 times v Oxford.  Little history.

it seems some on here like to diminish the rivalry and I'm not really sure why?  To look cool, to look unfazed by recent defeats?

Whilst the rivalry has diminished in recent times the Swindon Pox rivalry WAS extremely intense and rather nasty on BOTH sides  It overshadowed even City where there have been some scary times and last season much hilarity.

Never mind the friendly if occasionally fighty rivalry with the Biscuitmen.  What is "history" if it's uneventful, peacetime history?

Only the Pox has given us a quality player that caused Town fans to fight amongst themselves.  Christian Roberts by contrast was soon "alright now"

That rivalry might not truly be in the top ten now but it probably was once upon a time.  I hate yellow.

Always been the case. It's especially obvious when you look at other club's fans doing it - we don't care / they care more about us than we do about them / they're obsessed. I don't know why either, rivalries are great. I guess it's part of seeming like the superior club, to act like they're so shit they don't even register, but meh.. Unless it's Gillingham (they just need the rivals cos they never had any proper ones) or Franchise (not a club) I think rivalries should be embraced.

That said, there's the generational aspect of it as well. It seems depending on your age (or when you became a fan) you have a different hierarchy of hatred. Some people genuinely don't want to put Oxford on the top of the bonfire before they burn it.

I try to provide historical perspective....having come from a time when we'd give Oxford a couple of players like John Lloyd and Owen Medlock to help them out.

OK they did rightly let Mick Kearns get a chance of glory in the Anglo Italian Cup, as a way of an acknowledgement.

But times change....we can now loan them a Mehdi Kerouche.
