Title: Marrakech
Post by: Matchworn Shirts on Sunday, July 12, 2015, 11:16:11
Looking for a holiday destination for 7 nights in September, with Marrakech being an idea.
Has anybody been before ? Is it worth a visit?

Does the Marrakech Express stop at Petersfield?

Crosby, Stills and Nash sound useful additions to the squad.

Definitely worth a visit, fascinating culture, people, architecture; though prepare to get lost, constantly hassled by children trying to show you the way, and spend half the rest of your time watching your wife shopping.

7 nights is quite a long time, but there's a nice variety of day-trips you can do from there to break it up: Essaouira, Aït Benhaddou, the Atlas Mountains, making for a good compromise in your time-frame between relaxation and sightseeing.

You can also potentially do a trip to the Sahara, but it takes about 3 days and you spend most of that driving, so probably wouldn't recommend it if you're there for a week.

I did Agadir in October, they do trips to Marrakech & you get the beach holiday as well.

With everything going on, I would be dubious going anywhere north Africa based.

That's just me though.

Not at all. Just a big risk. Yes a risk, and nothing will probably happen. For me with Kids, we wouldn't contemplate that area.

Wales is much nicer.

I wasn't being serious - just a reference to the Audrey saga.

That region wouldn't interest me at all.

North Africa is stunning in places. Go to the safer places while you still can. So many people in those countries rely on the tourism.

A few years back I stayed at the same Tunisian hotel as where those shootings happened. I remember feeling quite bad going through villages operating under borderline 3rd world poverty just visit some Star Wars set. Not to mention I was there while the country was still technically in a revolution.

Westerners eh.

Marrakech is fascinating with the Djemma el fna square with its acrobats and monkeys and snake charmers but a full week may have a fairly high heat and hassle factor.

There are some great day trip options especially the Atlas Mountains.

I would consider a two centre holiday ending on the coast.  Agadir would probably be better for resort style attractions but Essaouira is an atmospheric, white-washed walled town with sandy beaches a 10 minute stroll out of town, windsurfing and horse or camel riding out to Jimi Hendrix's "castles made of sand"

Choices, choices.
