Post by: Red Frog on Sunday, May 10, 2015, 23:37:52
Since my unbeaten run continues, I've taken on the heavy responsibility of thread-starting once again.

Thursday night was right up there among the best awaydays I've ever attended. Meeting mates old and new (:bye: Paolo69) in a proper old-skool pub before the game, Jaybox's pre-match colour explosion, an STFC fightback and that unlikely last-minute winner (sorry to the bloke in front of me that I dragged off his chair as I fell backwards :-[ ).

And so to tonight: over to you to blow the roof off the Town End, to make the DRS rock, to snore more loudly in the Arkells. One more effort and we're at the Theatre of Rampant Consumerism again.

Enjoy the anticipation all day, make the most of the pre-match build-up, drink enough to tune up your singing voices but not so much that you can't focus on the pitch, because from kick-off onwards, it's more or less out of your hands...

Come On You Mighty Reds!

This morning I have to bury (well cremate, but that sounds wrong) my grandfather. He wasn't a big one for sports, but lived near the CG and always had an interest in results and how the club was doing. If you don't mind Town, I could really do with watching a rousing victory tonight. COYR.

Hopefully this is where having a team of kids helps, less worried, less nerves around in the team itself.  Think they will just go out and play like they have all season - which is probably a good thing but I imagine will send the fans crazy, especially the first time Wes dribbles around their centre forward.

I think there maybe a flurry of early goals a la Tranmere - if they go our way then great if not then our inability to break down teams who sit back will cost us. I just hope we don't sit back as we know we can't do that.

Believe me, the Blades fans are just as jumpy.

They are convinced they cannot keep a clean sheet so they will need to score 3 to go through.

Everyone and his dog knows we can't defend confidently, they'll be desperate not to go a goal down early.

just said the same thing about 3-1 being worse than 2-1 in regards to the missed pen.

I feel it wouldn't exactly make us more complacent, but more inclined to defend. they score with momentum and 3-2 is more dangerous than 2-1 with a fighting attitude.

We are the mighty Super Swindon Town.

We've been pushing for promotion to the Championship for years now. Will we get to Wembley today?

This means so much more than any game we've played so far, it's not just a football match.

Today we go to war.

So bring your scarves, shirts, flags and face paints.

Because tonight we paint the town RED.

COME ON YOU REDS.

We cannot go out and defend we HAVE to attack them, I am certain Power/Williams/Cooper or woever picks the side knows that we are incapable of defending a lead so we will go all out attack.

Just as Sheff Utd will have to come and attack us, they cannot afford to sit back and soak it up.

I don't think missing a pen at 1-0 down means you'd have scored the other 2....rather more likely you score the other 2 because you missed the pen.

No, because we give teams a chance and live dangerously, this can't be called.

I'm expecting a cagey start to the game. They'll not want to concede and no doubt will put men behind the ball and go 'kick and rush'. I can see us sitting back a little, but hopefully like Thursday we'll edge our way into the game. We need to start quicker than we did in the first leg and the defending around the box needs to be a lot tighter.

The longer it stays 0-0 the more it'll play into our hands. They'll have to go for the win and that'll create the space we like.

Although Ricketts scored a great header, i think he was terrible at wing back. I think he would be best in the middle of CB. Get gladwin on that side, he loves a good cut in from the left.

Loved Ricketts goal but as Jake says he is no wing back, I prefer Gladwin through the middle running at them but if he can only be accomodated down the left then so be it.

First 30 mins or so in the away leg he was poor but he really came into it more in then and created a few good chances then, he looked rusty but that was probably partly due to being rested on and off for a few games.

That sick feeling I had on Thursday is starting to return.

We need to attack from the outset and hopefully get an early goal to settle the nerves.  If they get an early goal, it's anyone's call.

If it goes to penalties we've got two hopes, Bob and No!

Why have Sheff Utd got no CBs?  Are they all injured?

If we play our passing game we will beat this lot as all they do is hit the channels but we need to be aware of Done and Murphy are their two best players and Done when he came on caused us problems but he cant last 90 minutes because of his injury.

Didn't like Rickets at wing back as he was the weak link in the midfield but I think Cooper will play him for his experience but the problem is he has no pace and always turns inside but to be fair to him hes a defender not a midfield player.

I think he will start with Smith and Obika or Williams tonight and bring Hylton on from the bench I still fancy him to score I just get this feeling he's going to be the hero. Sheffield United are really poor at the back and up there they were terrified of Byrne's pace and Hylton second half did a really good job causing them problems as well.

Its going to be a tough game but still fancy us to win and confident we will as we have the better technical players and their defence is the third worst in the league.

COYR lets put them to the sword and destroy that winging moaning Clough who is no where near the same class as his Dad.

Nope they leave it on, I have DAB in the car and that picks it up but you can only get local DAB so you have to be in an area that isn't covered by other local radio e.g. outside of BBC Bristols area, you are usually OK on the Swindon side of Bath on the M4 otherwise you get BBC Somerset/Bristol/Glos.

Anybody heading there and if so what's it called? Do you let Norvern Monkeys in? Otherwise it's pleading with a barman somewhere to switch over from Arsenal v Swansea for me.

Not the strongest bench but we can only put out the fit players, no point risking them unless they are 100% fit.

Willo is a big loss and Swift is a good option to change the game later on.

Their second was because we were too casual. Byrne tried a fancy flick in our own half, which gave them possession. Our goals were sublime, as we did the simple things well. If we don't get complacent we'll be fine.

If they had fucked that up I would never have forgiven them.

I said to Mrs Audrey at 3-0 you can't trust this team.

It was horrendous watching, torment and torture in equal measure. In some ways it feels like we lost.

There was a lot of our fans pissed up in The Merlin when I got there at 5 and the twats got no better at the end.

Glad I can't make it to Wembley. It'll be bad enough watching it in some bar in Kefalonia.

He (Luongo) I though was good in patches, not so good in others.

Here is a question, they scored a few headers, yet we seemed to allow them to cross in by standing off their wide men. Why.

----------
Oh yeah, what a key save from Fods that turned out to be at about 5-3 (I think)

----------
Thompson looked like a hamstring - 4-6 week job if so :( . Must be gutted.

I won't say too much as we should be loving this moment. However i had a good old Wembley sing song to the away fans. Fuck em, all I can remember from Brighton and Brentford are the away fans at the end. It stays in your mind. And tonight I enjoyed it. I wasn't however threatening and wanker signs, trying to be hard. And nor were the MAJORITY which people tend to forget when reporting these things.

Mental game, always nervous, fantastic to win and in front of our fans in the playoffs

Still. 50% chance of championship football next season. My usual fans to my left were moved for the sky cameras so I had Natalie Sawyer next to me, which was nice!

Just arrived home on the south coast. If I'm honest I don't think I could give a valid assessment of the game tonight - I'll leave that to everyone else. All I'll say is that the save from Wes at the end and a wonderful block from Obika helped win us the game.

I am in desperate need of a drink and a change of pants.

We are only going to fucking Wembley............

And I have never looked at the bank clock as much as I did tonight

My mind is still racing at a million miles a second. Completely insane game. Don't want to fall asleep or I'll just have relive it again in my dreams/nightmares.

Can't remember an atmosphere like it at the CG. Everywhere looked proper old school.

Shine taken off it by the inane cretins invading the pitch at the end. Denied the boys getting a proper lap of honour and everyone going mental. End of the match was just a damp squib in the end. Bell ends.

I think there maybe a flurry of early goals a la Tranmere - if they go our way then great if not then our inability to break down teams who sit back will cost us. I just hope we don't sit back as we know we can't do that.

Gloss taken off the win by that pack of cold pot noodles refusing to get off the pitch so the boys couldn't come back out. Felt like an anticlimax after all that.

Also, props to the solitary blades fan who stayed and clapped the team when they came out in the Arkells.

Fantastic that nobody has even tried to dissect that performance. When you score and concede 5, it's likely that most players were both good and bad. That first 20 minutes was sublime. Byrne, Smith and Kasim just ran the show. Smith's best game in a long long time and he didn't stop running all night long. Then, well..... who knows what the hell happened...

One things for sure - I walked into the Town End with fifteen to go before kick off. It was jumping. Jay, take another bow. I've not seen it like that before - I only started going in '90, so I'd be interested to know how that compared to the terraced days.

There is no point in doing any tactical analysis of that game or worrying about our dreadfully defending. Totally freak game, still can't get my head round it.

Bloody shame the scoreboard wasn't working, I genuinely lost track of the score around the 5-3/5-4 stage.

Brilliant atmosphere, best for years. Shame about the bellends at the end but then again I don't see the attraction of a pitch invasion unless you are 12 or a mong

None of the pubs in my town would show the game because of the Arsenal game. Had to drive 12 miles to the next town to watch it, so couldn't have a decent drink. The landlord was engrossed and thanked me for coming over - said he would have had to watch the boring Arsenal game if I hadn't have come. I should have come down for the game really, but hopefully its going to be an expensive weekend. My son supports Norwich, so hoping for a double header at Wembley  :D

In some ways it was reminiscent of the Tranmere and Leicester games in the 93 play offs. In both games at different points we looked to be in unassailable positions one minute only to be teetering on the brink the next. We'd have been done for if Leicester had gone 4-3 up at Wembley, likewise we'd have been f****d if Sheff U had done the unthinkable and scored a 6th last night.

As some one said earlier - STFC - You have to love 'em and hate 'em for what they put you through.

Not a lot can be said that hasn't already. Gladwin added a few quid to his value last night for sure. That first strike was top drawer. Thought Byrne was fantastic too. Defensively we are all over the place. Have been for a while now. Have to go at Preston for the whole game at Wembley as we cannot protect a lead. If we try to be cautious we'll lose. Smith finding his scoring boots is a major plus going into the final.

Hope there is enough footage for arrests to be made and the so called fans giving it the bigun miss out on the big day. Fucking pricks. We've been fortunate to have had a few times where pitch celebrations have occurred. I've never seen that before though. Why not rejoice at the result?

Just a couple of things.

If, and it's a big if, Louis is fit who would he replace? Kasim - no, Gladwin - no, Luongo - no.

If Nat is out, I'd go for Branco (gets hard hat). Toff should be fit.

Obika has to play alongside Smith.

It looked it from the DRS. He was not a happy bunny. The radio said he'd be having a scan this morning so we'll see.

I've still not entirely come to terms with what happened last night. As far as all the managers in attendance go, who out of them would have rather gone to see Arsenal Swansea? Interesting to see Pulis there, he must have been muttering 'lump it forward!' under his breath every time Sheffield got the ball.

Thompson pulling his hamstring yet still hobbling across to the ball to head it to safety pretty much sums up the whole 90 minutes for me.

The stewards should've thrown a couple out and threatened the rest unless they sat in their seats.

I really find that an extraordinary comment.  Luongo was involved in virtually every move forward, linking with Kasim, and making telling passes.  His defending is not great, but then that's not his primary role - except in a lunatic game like last night.  But to say he was anonymous.....  And for me, Kasim oozed class again, even in the mad times.  So calm on the ball, and almost always in the right place at the right time.  If we don't get past Preston, we will do well to hold on to him for next season.

Certain he had the hump a bit when coops told him to keep left. He isnt a defender, hence we need to accomodate him centrally further up.

Byrne was a strength and a weakness last night.

Yes, he helped set up at least three of our goals, but due to the fact he was caught up field, he probably cost us at least three as well as there was plenty of room on that side to run at our back three.

Byrne was a strength and a weakness last night.

Yes, he helped set up at least three of our goals, but due to the fact he was caught up field, he probably cost us at least three as well as there was plenty of room on that side to run at our back three.

and his show boating lead to the second goal

Highlights are on Sky right now, if we can get Kasim, Byrne, Luongo, Gladwin and Smith at their best on the day we have every chance.  Really hope Toffolo can get fit in Thompson's absence, the thought of Branco at Wembley is not one I like to entertain at all, Gladwin also has to stay central and remain a goal threat.

Re. the game last night the real turning point was their own goal, without that bit of luck immediately after our third I think it may have been a little more comfortable.

Fully agree on that. If we could've kept it tight for ten minutes afterwards, it might have been an easier night.

Of course, the same could be said about conceding the second just before half time...

How good was their left back at crossing? Every ball he put in caused havoc (think he got 2 assists as well)

My Wembley line up would be:

Foderingham
Ricketts - Stephens - Turnbull
Kasim - Luongo
Byrne - Gladwin - Toffolo
Obika - Smith

Then the only sub I know I'd do is bring on Louis Thompson for Toffolo in the second half and push Gladwin out to that side.

Completely agree - it gave them hope where previously they hadn't come close. 3-0 at half time would have been a lot different to 3-2 (other than the score)

Made to look better as our CBs were obviously wearing diver's boots instead of football boots.

That's why I would go for Branco. Say what you like about his howlers, he is the best we've got at attacking and heading away crosses - which, no doubt, is what Preston will be looking to do at Wembley.

It would be risky to bring Louis on as a sub, in case he broke down.  If either of the Thompson's have a chance of making the day, you need to start them and then re-organise if they break down.  You leave yourself little option if they are on the subs bench and then break down, will no subs left to replace them.

Just watched the highlights on Sky.  It was no less ridiculous watching it again.

A few random points:

I said last night Luongo was shit.  I take that back, as he did alot more than I noticed at the time.  Still not as influential as he was though.

Never thought about it at the time, but Gladwin was on for a hat trick if he'd taken the penalty.  I assume the miss on Thursday was the reason he didn't take it?

Why did Nathan hobble the whole way round instead of a stretcher being used? Surely that could have caused further damage?

Louis Thompson was in the dugout with a clipboard.

The perfect send off would be promotion, as if Norwich get promoted to the Prem, I would think Louis would be sent out on loan to a Championship side, which could well be us...

There were some 'special' people in the Arkells that couldn't be bothered to sit in their allocated seat, but decided to try and stand and the back of the stand or sit in other peoples seats.

The stewards should've thrown a couple out and threatened the rest unless they sat in their seats.

Think the main issue was that those 'special' people's seats had already been taken by even more 'special' people.

Were some fans in the arkells kicked out during the game? Saw the stewards running over sharpish during the second half

Saw one thrown out, ball went out for a throw and he grabbed it.
Sheff Utd player shoved him to get it back and 2 stewards pounced.
Dragged him off to the gate next to TE

Hylton really offers something different. Raw pace. None of our other strikers offer this and he gives us something else for defenders to think about. He was the only striker we have that would have been quick enough to latch onto the ball in the run up to the penalty. I like him a lot.

This new song is perfect for Wembley as it's easy for day trippers new fans to latch on to. If we have any chance of creating an atmosphere we have to stick to a core 3 or so easy songs. As annoying as it was, 'no one likes us' was a big reason Millwall were able to create some sort of atmosphere.

Well, from the POV of a fan sat at a Cheetha sanctuary in South Africa, monitoring the emotional condition of his wife as she kept tabs on the progress of the game via BBC sport ticker on an iPhone via a very delicate wireless signal, last night was a bit frantic! Find the signal at 3-0 up then before we can get too comfortable it is 3-2? WTF is that all about? I then had to join her outside whilst she chewed her nails down to the knuckle waiting for updates. Every time the update spinner set itself into action, she nearly had a coronary (or kittends) waiting to see what else could happen.

WARNING- Supporting Swindon Town FC can seriously damage your health.

For the big ties next year I think we should aim to make something happen every time. Streamers or a new banner to roll out.

Anyone think the total absence of our famous short goal kick routine was responsible for our possession stat down to a feeble 45% - and maybe was the reason Blades were able to get up a head of steam which led to all those crosses and conceded goals.

Obviously didn't hamper us going forward, either.

It was like recalling a dream where what you recall is still vivid but is completely incoherent, and you have to prepare to adjust to reality

...yeh, town were Barca and cruising to victory in a maginificent amphitheatre of adoring fans and we kept scoring and scoring on a loop but there was this weird crappy music from the 60's played over a scratchy tannoy which made me feel strangely dissatisfied... oh no I've got that wrong we weren't Barcelona we were about to enter history as the biggest play off bottlers ever and whole cities were laughing at us for throwing away the biggest lead in play off history, vile, yellow, stenchy cities all laughing,  oh no it wasn't the tribunes of the nou camp it was a supercharged town end terrace except there were streamers, and we qualified for Wembley even though no one knew the score and it had to be an overnight count as the game was replayed on video, it was 5-5 or something but there was no recount even though Clough demanded one and we qualified for Wembley I think....oh wake up for Chrissake, ah that's more like it, I'm wet and cold and we seem to have gone down to Crawley at home..."geddit forward" I yell in forlorn anxiety as a couple of snide town fans turn round and raise their eyebrows

With that in mind, I'd have Sam Ricketts captain the side at Wembley. Is that controversial?

It would have to be a very minor pull to be ready for Wembley. We all know it wasn't.

Rickets for captain? Why not.

In the away leg on tv they kept saying Swindon is Rickets home town team. He isn't born here, have they got that wrong?

Born in Aylesbury, played for pox, but his grandad is a massive town fan and he's always looked out for us apparently.  Not strictly home town boy but not too far.

Not as controversial as my proposal that he be dropped and Branco put in.

Not to overdo the 'one of our own' craze in football at the moment, but have we ever had so many lads in one team with Wiltshire connections? That's the Thompsons, Ricketts and Turnbull.

Previous best Rhys Evans and Adi Viveash in the same team?

Married in Lambourn now living in Lambourn his mother is sister of Johnny Francombe and his Grandfather Norman Francombe is Swindon through and through, Sam grew up watching Swindon so apart from being born here I'd say he pretty much qualifies as local.

This makes me feel old, John Francombe was in the year below me at Park Grammar...   and Jill Francombe was in my class, I think she was John's cousin though.

Their 2nd goal was pretty shite defending - the cross comes in for the guy to score completely unmarked - but their 3rd goal has to be the shittiest piece of defending ever. 4 of the Sheff U players were running in to receive the cross.....against 2 of our defenders. That's piss-poor.

The 1st was a fluke, the 4th was just pinball (shit defending nonetheless - our defenders seem incapable of hoofing a ball clear) and the 4th was a good piece of skill by the United player.

Basically, 3 goals as a result of shit defending. If it were only 1 I wouldn't be so concerned........

Let's hope the final's not the same (for our defenders).

You could argue that all 5 of ours we scored were down to shit defending at one point. Most of it was to do with the way the game panned out, they were playing 2-3-5 near the end, so we were bound to get overloaded. In essence nothing to fret about. 1-0 or 9-8, I don't mind at Wembley.

Meh. When we played Preston at home it was on the back of an extended break before which we'd been conceding loads of sloppy goals. We won 1-0.

If we go 1-0 up at Wembley, invade the pitch. The Football League will let the result stand* and give us a mere 200k fine.

* or is that only for Blackpool
** oh wait, we aren't Villa, it'll be relegation for us.

Preston were charged for their pitch invasion at the end of their semi final second leg. Although I can find an article relating to it, there is no article a out what the punishment was. It seems the FA has just forgotten about it!

Title: Re: Swindon Town v Sheffield United Official Matchday Thread.
Post by: Sir Pissalot on Friday, August 7, 2015, 06:31:24
I may be tempting fate but I think there were different circumstances with the Blackpool and Preston instances.  At Preston, a player was assaulted by a Preston fan and, at Blackpool, the pitch invasion caused the premature end of the match.  So the authorities had to be seen to take action.

If they do fine us, maybe those who ran onto the pitch will put their hands in their pockets and make a contribution.  Yeah, that's going to happen...
