Title: Sheffield United v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Red Frog on Wednesday, May 6, 2015, 23:50:30
So, this is it. The end of the phoney war, the end of the beginning, and the beginning of the end-game.

The Frog takes his fragile unbeaten thread-starting record on to Bramall Lane, along with himself in a few hours, to join the um, purple and black throngs and a skyful of red and white streamers to cheer our noble band of brothers and assorted mercenaries on to victory.

Sean Bean, Jessica Ennis, Joe Root, Chris Wilder (yup, apparently), the Human League, ABC, Heaven 17, Clock DVA, Cabaret Voltaire, Arctic Monkeys, Def Leppard, Jarvis Cocker… clear the stage for SWINDON TOWN FC.

We're mauve
We're black
We won't be coming back.
SWINDON TOWN. SWINDON TOWN.

PS. Remember to vote!

Sheff utd will probably have Davis up front kicking and elbowing trying to get one of defenders sent off so we'll need a stronger referee than our last visit. As long as we play like we can then I can see us coming away with a lead,2-1 Gladwin and Stephens

Not sure what's happened, was extremely nervous about this one, but I'm suddenly not. Suppose its because it only the first leg, and its likely going to be tight (don't quote me on that).

Met the team coach just after 6 pm on the A419 last night, so at least they were safely to bed by about 10 last night, are they training at the Wednesday ground this morning?

Leaving here 1 or 2. Looking forward to this. Sheff Utd a proper football club, a proper stadium and proper fans who know what its like to be fucked over by the authorities a la Tevez. The love stops there, however, as we need to get through. Should be a great atmosphere between two recently underperforming teams. Its not only a case of which Swindon turns up but also which Sheff Utd turns up. It really is a game that is impossible to predict. Hopefully it will be decided on the pitch rather than the whim of a ref or lino. I have a real feeling Luongo is going to be the man and Gladwin not far behind him.
I'm going for 1-2 with Luongo and Gladwin scoring with 1200 Town in a crowd of 27500.

Due to travel commitments tomorrow I am giving it a miss....don't despair, I have been to The Blades three times and we lost every fucking one.... :suicide:

The 'jinx' will be watching the match from the comfort of Victor Mildews living room.

If we don't lose it will a result as far as I'm concerned...

I thought I'd resigned myself to missing this and Monday's game and that it wouldn't bother me much.....

......I am very much bothered. I feel dirty having to watch football on Sky, but the biggest feeling is one of huge frustration. Frustration that I won't be there, frustration that it's partly my own fault and frustration that I'll be on my own, with no like minded people around me to celebrate a victory or bemoan a defeat.

Just fucking win and give me the opportunity to be loud and embarrassing in front of lots of strangers!

There is no doubt that we can beat any side in this league with ease when we are on our game and motivated. Just as easily our heads can drop when we inevitably make one silly mistake at the back and gift the opposition a goal.

If we play as a team and attack them from the off we can get a result there, something no Town side has doine since 1970 when Trollope and Horsfield scored in a 2-1 win at Bramall Lane.

Am I confident? not overly, but quietly.

Do I think we can win there? yes if we play as a unit and not as a side of indivduals.

Hopefully its a great day out for Town fans and an impressive performance for a change on live TV, play well and score goals yet concede none....thats what it comes down to, oh and to all those going....sing your hearts out, wish I was there.

I'm all for it.

Within the Wembley showcase final format, I think this is only the second time (out of six) where our first leg has been away from home so this is a different feeling from the most recent P-O attempts.

The optimist in me thinks that Town will click and greatness will be witnessed.
The pessimist in me hopes we can keep the score the down before the second leg.

COME ON TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN!

I know he drifted out of football only a couple of years after leaving us when his alcoholism got a grip on him. Such a shame and waste of talent.

Where he is now though I don't know.

Coincidentally we signed him from tonights opponents for £40k.

It appears we are definately the underdogs if forums are anything to go by.

Out of 120 votes in the Sheff Utd forum only 12 think we can go on and win promotion.

http://www.s24su.com/forum/index.php?threads/play-off-poll.39687/

Being underdogs could genuinely work in our favour with all the pressure on Sheffield, their fans are well known for being moaning fickle negative fans anyway.

I'd read little to nothing into that. Most seem unaware that we've been playing our reserves/youths lately. Not that a poll would make any difference anyway.

Nothing any of us write has any influence at all on the game :)

Reading all the forums (I was bored) of all the clubs in our division (and several that aren't)  I would say that in the eyes of fans of other clubs we are by far and away the least fancied of the 4 teams with most backing Preston (as the finished highest obviously) or backing the plucky, smallest fanbase, side Chesterfield, mostly because they don't like us, PNE or Sheff Utd it would seem.

If football matches were the result of fans forum positivity then Chestefield would walk the play offs well ahead of us, Preston and Sheff Utd.

Both Preston and Sheff Utd have more than their fair share of whinging moaning negative posters that put ours to shame.

I fear tonights game will effectively decide the two legged tie either way. I'm hoping to swing by Brammal Lane later and pick up a programme before heading south.

The Play-Offs used to have a two legged semi and the same for the final (until somebody won).

Then the FA decided that a showcase final would be better. For the basis of my point I decided to count the current format only which applies to 1989 onwards.

Whoever is a goal or two behind come the second leg will still think they have a good chance of taking the tie to pens (Town have come from two down in recent games). Three and its probably all over.

Why bother though.....I could understand not including a 2 or 3 legged final, when you're looking at semi finals although the we did have home advantage last v Gills in the first final.

Why bother though.....I could understand not including a 2 or 3 legged final, when you're looking at semi finals although the we did have home advantage last v Gills in the first final.

Incidentally for the first couple of years, one of the relegation candidates of te league above was in.

Yup, Feb 1970 was our last victory there.

16 games at Sheffield United, lost 12, drawn 2, won 2.

Not a great record there, to put it politely.

what became of him? Was a heavy drinker and a bit of a lad. Wasn't at the recent get together of the ossie play off squad(Ross MacLaren the other absentee)

As for tonight I'm hopefully that we can come away with a draw.

We're in the game and 3-4 players have been anonymous. If Luongo turns up to the second half, we'll turn this around no problem.

I am however, getting another drink. Morrison's had Pimm's Cider on offer, it's actually quite nice if you're into Pimm's.

Very unsettled early on, But... we looked to have settled a bit, and we are looking ok, Bryne needs to learn when to pass the fucking ball!!!!

Sheff Utd look dangerous when they break, their defence is committing, so a quick turn may pay off

We still in this, but we must not concede early on the 2nd half! If we start brightly then im sure we will get back into the game

Average performance, but a hell of a result! We ground that out.

The good: Foderingham, Kasim, Hylton, Ricketts' header, Byrne's guts to shoot.

The bad: Ricketts in the first half, the back 3s distribution, Luongo (where on earth was he?), Byrne running down blind alleys (until the end).

The Blades are a decent side. Fantastic energy and commitment early on. They should have had a penalty for the handball. They won all the 50/50s in the first half hour and their directness troubled us. It took their goal to wake us up, but even still (and missed penalty aside) we were lucky to go in one down.

But we perked up and they got sloppy. Matt Done looked fantastic when he came on.... We were no better than them. I'd say they shaded it, but as an away side, you've got to hand it to our boys. Half a job well done.

It's all very well looking at specific incidents and "key moments" but, largely, tonight we weren't very good. Luck was on our side at times. Some players need to up their game, especially if we move on a stage and encounter Beckford and Garner at Wembley. That's if we get there. We still have some problems to address.....let's not count our chickens...just yet.

Can't agree with that. He's been really lively recently, but tonight he have the ball away too much mostly by holding onto it too long.

But even so, he scares defenders. He won a penalty and he scored the winner. So its not exactly all bad :)

Buzzing after that.  The epiotome of a game of two halves.  I would happily have taken the one nil and gone home at half time but Cooper sorted them out at the break.  We looked sharper,  hungrier and more aggressive After sleepwalking through the first half.  Burned deserved his goal,  he was our only real threat.  Kasim was a much needed calm head when it was all getting a bit frantic in the middle.  Massive result,  buyit ain't over yet!

Byrnes bit of magic glossed over his frustrating ability to run into defenders and give the ball away cheap....beat and cross should be the order of the day.

Not the sort of game for Paris tonight...

Gladwin neat going forward but struggled to defend.

Smith squash court control fucks me off...just bounces off him. Willow and Beaker for Monday for me.....but Cooper seemed impressed with Smith.

Um bongo missing for the whole game apart from goal saving header near the end.

Ref missed a pen for them, defo, Clough not happy but we should of had one in the league game so fuck off.

Davis getting booked early doors for kicking the ball away fucked his style of play right up.

Ginger bearded sub was a handful.

Ricketts hasn't impressed me much but that goal was epic....real clunker...

Kassim was excellent...

Pissed over them til 78 and then went to rat shit again and let them back in it.

Looking forward to Monday...its game on, job a third done.

I think we may of used up a few lives tonight and also some ref shouts went our way...more of the same please.

On the whole I thought they all had decent games and I was particularly impressed with Hylton bar his shooting which was poor. For such a young team to play so well in a hostile atmosphere was very impressive, first victory as well in six visits so buzzing right now

Think criticism of Luongo is very harsh. He wasn't effective and influential in the usual sense of making decisive passes and creating chances, but he did a lot of work to keep possession ticking over and to move United players out of position, which was key to a lot of our expansive passing.

Only just got back, have to be up for work at 6.30 but couldn't give a shit, what a brilliant night.

Haven't celebrated a goal like that winner for a very long time, great scenes and puts us in a great position now for Monday.

First 20 minutes were poor, looked lathargic and generally didn't put much effort in and they deserved their lead. But it did at least seem to kick us into gear.

Much better second half, Kasim, Stephens and Bryne get special praise from me. We did ride our luck at times and the ref wasn't the best but I think we deserved the result.

Great effort from the town fans and fair play to Jay, the away end looked awesome, I've got some videos that I will try to put up tomorrow. Made plenty of noise too for 90 minutes.

Now just don't fuck it up town...

How to get no sleep on a work night - watch the Town away in a pulsating encounter. First 20 mins was never going to be easy at a place like Brammall Lane, but we grew in confidence and stature as the game went on and to win like that in the last minute was something else. All objectivity goes out of the window so far as I'm concerned, I thought our boys were fantastic. Still buzzing and makes the poor performances at Scunny, Macclesfield,Cheltenham or wherever else worth putting up with.

'You know when we were kids and some 'disaster' befell us? Your mum would soothe you and say 'It's for the best.' That's exactly how I felt when their second went in. We are certainly not good enough to win the play-offs and the thought of this shower in the Championship would be frightening'

Absolutely knackered this morning and with a bit of repair bill to car after hitting a badger on the way home.  I've been critical of him since X Mas but Byrne tore them a new one yesterday. He put in a hell of a shift and it was great to hear the northerners opinion of him on the way back to the car. Not sure where the Luongo commwents are coming from. In the second half I thuoght he was really good. Hylton is a tough little bugger and ran them ragged. Kasim, on form, is an absolute joy to watch and he loved it at then with the guys with the Iraqi flags.
A great evening and up there with the best. Totally unexpected.

We were obviously watching different games. I thought Byrne was poor, except for the goal and if it had been against us I would have been disappointed with the goalie. He ran into trouble on loads of occasions, I can't recall him going past a man once and in my opinion he dived for the penalty. Apart from a couple of through balls Luongo was so quiet he might as well have not bothered turning up. He didn't look interested.

Kasim, on the other hand, I agree was back to his classy best.

.....the back 3s distribution.....
....was piss-poor, but then the Sheffield United players knew what to do and did it well. They pressed up as soon as the back 3 had the ball and none of them knew how to cope other than to pass it sideways to one of the other 2. How many times did Stephens lose the ball by fannying around with it? He was lucky on a couple of occasions that a foul was given! Then again, who was looking for space when they had the ball? Both wing backs were pushed too far up as well so there was nowhere for the 3 at the back to go with it except up the middle.....which is asking for trouble when they, inevitably, give the ball away.

Why does Byrne never go outside of his man? Every time he cuts inside. A better side will shackle him I fear.

So a normal performance that's been repeated for the last nine months.  Our results come down to how many times we give the ball away and how often we are punished for it.  You'll need to live with it I'm afraid.

I think the cat shat itself and the mrs almost dropped the kiddie there and then when that 2nd went in!!

Great shot by Bryne, but im sorry, hes frustrating, lost the ball god knows how many times, ran into trouble constantly.

Superb header by Ricketts.

Kasim, just oozed class, composed, deserved MoM.

Still can't see anything in Smith, but after moaning about Byrne for the best part of 90 mins last night, I fully expect Smith to bang in a hatrick come monday :)

Run by Stephens, like Sol Campbell against Argentina in 98!

Being critical of a badger since christmas is no reason to run him down in your car! There was a government sanctioned cull for this sort of thing... leave it to them!

Smith was immense last night, won just about every header and managed quite a few flick ons.He works his bollocks off dragging defenders out of position, holds the ball up well and chases back to put defenders under pressure. Its a team game and he more than plays his part. That must be the first game where Fods never made the short goal kick to Thompson et al with all the heart stopping that goes with it.

Yet, we still had our share of possession and played in our 'style' - SO KEEP IT THAT WAY!

I think Smith played cos their makeshift CBs were on the small side and he duly battered them all game - good shout Cooper.

neither forward had a sniff of the goal though. This is a concern. Always look vulnerable at the back too. Will be some feat if we do get promoted

Our second goal was a long ball from Foderingham. Smith (who apparently offered nothing) brought it down under pressure, laid it off to Luongo (who apparently offered nothing) who passed to Byrne (who apparently was poor) who scored.

I'll be a little disappointed if any of them don't start on Monday.

Disagree. Smith worked and closed down at every opportunity.
Last night we were prevented from our normal walking the ball out from awes.
Smith was utilised as the outlet higher up field at did well and took some heavy knocks in the process.

I think you'll need to look at the first half again.  There were periods when Smith won nothing in the air and couldn't keep the ball stopping us from building up the play. In the second half he improved as did our play.

Bigger issues with our defence the first half.
Going forward we were ok but team moved up another gear second half.
Smith and Hylton had a real battle first half with the midfield having to cover the defence.

I really think the people who moan about Byrne, don't have a clue about players. Even if he doesn't score or create a chance every time, they aint down our end, he panics sides and forces them to double up. So at the worst someone else now has space. He doesn't have to play a blinder every game or every ball to be effective.

Wasn't the first thing Nathan Byrne said when interviewed: 'it's only half-time and not over yet,' or words to that effect? And didn't the Sky comms praise the players for not over-celebrating when the final whistle went?

Thought the celebrations, such as they were, were rather subdued seeing as it was a last minute winner.

Clough knows he's in the shit and is just trying to distract from the fact he is a useless cunt of a manager.

With a big club with a big budget and fantastic fan base, he's a total cock

Byrne did say that and so did the Sky commentators. Then there's Clough's comments about the Ref and decisions given against them.

Clough and Sheff Utd are just trying to generate a sense of injustice and something to 'kick' against on Monday night. Fair enough if he thinks that will help his team. I doubt it will.

Yeah but why let facts get in the way. Bloody hell, that Freeman has got plenty to say for himself hasn't he. Sounds like they should have won by about 6 the way he's banging on. Yes, you pressed us, and we made a few mistakes, well done. You were perfect and it was all the ref's fault!

Oh and I particularly like the bit where he says the gaffer told us to go out and score one, and then another. Inspirational stuff! Cloughie for England.

To be fair, if you're going to stick a chip butty up your arse, you'd want it nice and greasy. And nice soft bread too, no baguettes or crusty rolls. Not that I'm suggesting anyone should do such a thing, just saying the greasy aspect might be quite handy in that particular circumstance.

First chance to post after the game, so here goes

I thought the atmosphere was brilliant, the streamers really set up the fans for the game, I think that as fans if we can get the tempo up at the start it keeps going, but if its sluggish it can stay that way too!  Although now that the bar has been set us lazy fans are going to expect this level of dedication and hard work from those committed few but definitely take a bow Jay Box.

With regards to the players I as impressed with Smithy thought he led the line well, did loads of donkey work that help the team, I thought Hylton grew into the game and showed promise.  I thought that Byrne didnt attack the byline enough, but he was always available, and took 2 or even 3 players out of the game by sucking them in which freed up more space for others, also he scored, won a penalty and crossed for the first goal!  My MOM though was Kasim who looked back to his best and just tidied up all game!

When the second goal went in the roof (well the netting above) almost came off through sheer relief and excitement, but I would have been disappointed if my lad hadnt at least got a hand to that shot though.

I thought the players celebrations at the end of the game was fairly muted, possibly because Branco wasn't there.

I am still a bit concerned because of our home form, but they will be forced to attack so I am hopeful that we can pick them off and if we get one I think we can really turn it on and get a morale boosting performance ahead of the big W

I hate trash talk via the press. It just comes off as petty and desperate.

Stick this on the dressing room wall, or something like that.

http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-u/they-think-it-s-all-over-but-we-ll-see-about-that-clough-1-7252439
Another slight rehash with different wording from the Norvern Monkeys.

http://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/sheff-utd/sheffield-united-town-are-warned-they-ve-written-the-blades-team-talk-1-7251992

TBF I didn't think we celebrated enough at the final whistle and as stated above Sky complimented us for not over celebrating.

The way that Nigel Clough lost his composure in the latter part, and after the game; coupled with the calls for his head on Greasy Chip Butty fan forums really shows the amount of chaos around this Sheffield United team, in stark contrast to the always calm and collected (When he's not jumping around the technical area) Cooper. I think if we get an early goal and get Clough all red faced and whiney again, we can take them apart.

Ok we rode our luck at times and may have been a bit smash and grab; however Freeman's comments would suggest he was playing in a different game to the one I was watching. Don't think we overcelebrated at all, after the final whistle there was a line of stewards facing us lined up across the 18 yard line and at one point I didn't think our players would come any nearer than that. Anyway a few of them did but for no extended length of time, don't recall Cooper coming across at all. The only person who lingered was Yas but he'd (a) just been given MoM and (b) saw a couple of guys with an Iraqi flag in our end - if he'd found a couple of his countrymen 1000s of miles from home, can't blame him really. Compare all this with Juventus players running arms linked from the halfway line to their fans the previous night (ok it was Real Madrid!) - that's overcelebrating at the end of a first leg. Reaction from Clough and Freeman - it's sour grapes, that's all.

Reading the Sheff Utd article towards the end you'd think they were some small minnows who put in a David vs. Goliath effort against the footballing might of Swindon.

For the first 20 mins we need to play possession football and tease them until they crack by the sounds of it.

Listening to Sky Sports you'd have thought it was Manchester United vs Chippenham Town, basically making it out we're minnows who have never done fuck all and Sheffield are a world footballing powerhouse who are down on their luck.

Sounds a bit like the 82ers. Soak up the pressure and play it to your one playmaker (Freeman for shitty and Johnson for PNE) to do the damage, bully teams off the ball at the back and soak up the attacks of the opposition.

Nonsense. City have some quality players and won the league for a reason.

PNE are set up like every other Simon Grayson team in history. Play it long, dig the elbows in pull the shirts, clip the ankles in, and give it to a decent striker to score. The sad thing is that not enough teams work out how to stop them.

It's usually based on where the fans travel from.

I'd assume we will get the same end of the stadium that we had the last two times, as the tube from Paddington arrives at that end of the ground, whilst the tubes from Kings cross arrive into Wembley Park.

Did he leave this neck of the woods under a cloud or something?

Even if it is true, which it is, he is only a bench warmer.

Get your win/win bets on fella's, PP offering 4/1 on Sheff Utd to qualify, with additional free bets. so Town get to Wembley or you earn yourself a decent return, insurance gambling at its best!
Done, with Sporting Bet with cashback through quidco to cover my bet itself, so no loss.

I posted earlier that I heard about this last night although the guy who told me got the wrong player which a few people put straight earlier. I think the guy is only a sub most of the time but none the less would upset there preparations.

Well he is an 82er !!

He knows that one message can unleash his Twitter disciples and the same applies to Morshead.

Annoying thing is that Swindon aren't even at Wembley just yet. Be cool, everyone.

I think it's pronounced as above but it's actually this:

Allez allez allez oh,
Allez allez allez oh,
Swindon Town FC,
From the West Country

[repeat]

Would be great to get this going between the DRS and the Town End.

It reminded me of this... https://youtu.be/1500bBMpbk8

Absolute must for the Cooper chant tomorrow night too. It's been too long since a good proper sing off between Town End and DRS
