Title: Preston North End V Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread.
Post by: herthab on Saturday, April 25, 2015, 07:35:59
The fact that I'm creating a Matchday thread at 8.35 is testament to the huge interest this game has for us.

Don't know if we'll win, lose or draw, but I'm going for a surprise 3-2 victory to us. Hilton, and Gladwin x2.

I suppose the script says that we will play with freedom and abandon whereas PNE will be feeling the pressure and will be nervous and jittery.

I predict that we will go 2-0 though Obika and Hylton. PNE will finally get their shit together in the last 20 and get a couple of goals to make it 2-2.

Then again....who cares.

Preston will go to 10 men, Swindon score in 85th minute to make it 1-0.
Thor leads a pitch invasion.
Swindon fans are kept in ground for an hour and Duke misses his train.
What could have been......

Strangely, I'm quite up for this.  (Not that I'm going.)  I like the idea that we might ruin Preston's party, allow Franchise to slip in - and then get a crack at kicking Preston's demoralised arses again in the Play Offs.

This would, of course, mean having a hand in getting the Franchise abomination promoted, which doesn't sit easy with me.  But as mentioned previously, the prospect of being beaten by Franchise in the Play Offs - and they would beat us - is too horrific to contemplate.

Come on Swindon!  For all the bearing this has on our Play Off campaign, this might as well be a Play Off game itself.

The 92-93 end of season was similar (I think) in so far as the last few games didn't matter and we played West Ham at the end getting well beaten before that wonderous play off semi's and final.

I would imagine fods might not play until the play offs now. Possibly the same with luongo.

You would think Byrne might need a rest also.

Very similar. The last few games of the normal season bore no resemblance to the play off games back then. Hopefully the same will be true this time.

Also back then, Portsmouth were in the driving seat for the autos right up to the penultimate game. They'd been looking unbeatable but absolutely tanked in the play offs. The rest as they say, is history.

Take your point re irritation of helping them but do you want to be facing MKD in the playoffs given that they have hammered us twice and losing to them at Wembley would be about as bad as it gets.

Rightly or wrongly, given a choice I would want to get MK out of the way. As I've said many times before, my desire to see STFC succeed outweighs any dislike I may have of other teams.

I think we'll get a sound tonking today. This will result in MKD 'fans' forever saying we did it deliberately, Town go on to beat them in the P-O's with a smash and grab win at Wembley and a new 'Swindle' is born....

Cooper has stated that he's focusing on May now so it's not ridiculous to assume that Town won't go out all guns blazing. That's football, I certainly hope we don't whinge on if we do lose.

What could they actually fine us for? Look at when we played Sheff United away, they changed all but 1 player from their cup semi final so surely that's the precedent.

Nil. Clubs have done it before at he end of the season. At the end of the day they are in your squad, and you can play who you want.

Yeah, sorry. Think this is just being back-hauled from the ground to whoever edits the match for Sky/BBC. You normally only get dodgy streams for matches that are being shown on live TV somewhere (which it isn't).

I'm not sure what the rules are. Anybody?

Yep, it is OK to uproot a football club to a made up place but make a few changes to your team and you get an FA fine

Fucking disgrace.  We should be fined for picking that side. We should be trying to at least settle on a formation for the next few games. How can it be beneficial to make that many changes.

If we get hammered we are going to be in for some serious shit

Come next week, so many teams will give youngsters a go in the first team. and play experimental line-ups.

At the end of the game, we're going to finish fourth, no-one is going to catch us. Cooper has taken a view that he wants to play an experimental team, to see how some of his reserve players would experience a 'big game' atmosphere, just in case we need them in the play-offs, especially in Belford.

If they do well, like Hylton did on Tuesday, they might just come into the first team picture.

Also Franchise are complaining, which is also a good thing.

Actually it's great, and a real eye opener - exactly the kind of thing everyone who gets into sports broadcasting wants to do and a good conversation starter at any party, but (an outwardly much less interesting) opportunity knocks.

Back to the game - we're doing well. Lacking a bit of a cutting edge but not doing badly at all.

Its worrying there are "must play" contract rumours. I don't like them regardless of what I think of Ricketts, which to be honest I think he's OK but I'd have Stephens, Turnbull and Thompson as our back three.

But then I think I'm the only person who doesn't like Stephens in midfield much.

Putting out a weakened side can help sometimes as Sepp Herberger would tell you.

I'm prepared to believe it was a small group of Franchise fans who travelled to Deepdale with the express intention of masquerading as Swindon and/or Preston fans and smearing the names of their promotion rivals.

In fact, I'm certain of it.  (This is how internet rumours work, isn't it?)

Filthy, disrespectful Franchise vermin.  Are there no depths that they are not willing to sink to?

How can the retards think that playing Preston would be easier than MK? We couldn't beat Yeovil at home with a good side out!

In spite of his long association with MK, I can't hate him (not that I have a lot of time for hating anyway. It's largely a waste of energy IMO). He talks a lot of sense and is clearly a decent manager. And if he was to end up as our manager one day I, like yourself would not be massively surprised.

Well I have to say, if you ask me now how confident I am of winning the play offs on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being 'not a snowball's chance in hell' and 10 being 'just bring out the fixtures so I can book my b+b in Brighton') I would have to have to go for about minus 17.

Fortunately, there is no logic whatsoever in football and as I've mentioned previously, we limped over the line in 92-93 and in fact I remember us playing the last game of the season at Barnsley with the legendary Channel Islander Chris Hamon playing at centre forward for his one and only STFC appearance which shows you how seriously we were taking that game. It was utterly insipid but once the play offs started it was literally a whole new ball game. We can but hope that history repeats itself.

I'm sure Chris Hamon played v Luton at home that's season too, Easter Saturday? Or was that his only start? (V Barnsley). I was there at Oakwell that day, most pointless away trip ever.

Just checked again on http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/Squad.asp?Season=1992-1993 and yes indeed he did make an appearance against Luton but that Barnsley game was his only start. He made 2 or 3 starts over the next couple of seasons as well. Nonetheless, there are comparisons to be made between this season and 92-93. Am I clutching at straws? Probably.

On Hamon I'm sure he had a hand in the goal vs Luton, was a terrible match iirc, still the Monday more than made up for it. 93 hAs to be our greatest season, doubt I'll see a better one at the CG.

Well that was an interesting day out.
Started off with a gift then settled down and really looked in control, however once again lack a cutting edge. Their keeper was never tested however a few balls put through on another day may have found the strikers running through.
Not that disappointed by the team selection as the players need resting. Don't givecaxshitbwhat MKD think. Minute silence always one dick head who causes more morons to join in.
In the middle of a riot on Wolverhampton station with battons drawn which was rather interesting.
Made us miss our connection.
Anyway our season depends on the games next week, not today or the next two games.
Finally pleased for Hartlepool.

Our Play-Off run in history is indifferent and this seasons conclusion could become our worst.

With the exception of perhaps 1987 and 1989, we've never gone in to the Play-Offs in the sort of form that results in the opposition quaking in their boots.

1987: WWDDD
1989: WDWWD
1990: LWDDD
1993: WDDLL
2004: WWLLD
2010: DDDWL
2013: LLWWL
2015: LDL

Yes. Unbelievably frustrating until Bodin got the winner for the umpteenth time that season very late on. Kammy was playing for them.

Best season ever? Arguably yes. There are other contenders, it depends how you're judging it. It's quite a subjective thing really.

Remember watching him for the development squad in the summer, at Fairford maybe.... He's pure pace and power.

I really can't see the comparison with the 92/93 season . Ok we might of had a bad last few games ( that season) but we have had a fucking nightmare since january.

Every player will have to raise their game to have any chance. And every fan can do tgeir part.

My only real issue is that we are resting players, our players don't respond very well with breaks....

Maybe fringe players getting compliments will sort that out though.

This is one thing that wasn't mentioned by the usual dribbling moaners. Yes they might be young and fringe players but as Cooper said, they're still our future and the likes of Randall are clearly not drastically out of place with the starting XI. Surely competition for places is a good thing?

But then asking such logic of someone who thinks we should be banned from the playoffs for upsetting MKdonalds is a stretch I suppose.

I'm hoping the resting = bad form thing is just a coincidental superstition thing that happens in football but I'm not sure.. Has anyone started a rumour about Tenerife yet? Cos my neighbour who knows Curly Withers' gardener said they were out drinking all day and that MC spent training sessions teaching them to play beer pong.

I'm sure Chris Hamon played v Luton at home that's season too, Easter Saturday? Or was that his only start? (V Barnsley). I was there at Oakwell that day, most pointless away trip ever.

He played a few times over the next couple of seasons, i even saw him score!

A 'fucking nightmare' wouldn't result in Town being in 4th place. Relegation or the threat of relegation is a 'fucking nightmare'.

You must have been afraid to sleep during the 2010/2011 season.

They're bonkers, you mean, but I think it's a minority so "persistent negativity around the fans" is perhaps a bit harsh on the non-bonkers majority
3x Bonkers mentioned in one post, a new TEF record I feel. I don't think I have ever used the word "bonkers" in any conversation with anyone ever :D

As for the game yesterday....it was fairly meaningless for us, we blooded a few younger players and gave them valuable game time just in case we need them and pissed off the plastic wankers at the Dongs so not a bad day at the orifice all in all.

Anyone else get sucked in on the police with batons and the Wolves fans on Wolverhampton station ?
Some crazy bastards joined our train at Wigan on way home. No bother with both my young lads proudly wearing their colours.
Mind you the train was rocking with Millwall-esq type fans fighting each other then trying to board another train at Wolverhampton to get at other fans on another train.
Held back and missed our connection thus had to catch the next train.
Long 12 hour day that was :)

We lost 2-1 away, were 1 up then Smith missed an open goal, hardly a hammering.

7 wins, 2 draws and 9 defeats since 30 January. No one can deny that this is 3 months of lower midtable form. We can still pull it together for the play-offs though.  :)

If you had reversed the order of our results so far this season - so three months of average results (Aug, Sep, Oct) followed by an upturn in form since the start of November, the mood would be very different.  As it is, we sustained promotion-winning form for 5 months with a squad made up of ‘kids’ (no disrespect intended…in fact, quite the opposite.)  Sustaining that beyond the end of January was always going to be a struggle.
I would be genuinely interested to see what a league table would look like had the season started on Feb 1st.  Does such a thing exist?  The impression I have is that during the last 3 months, our form has been ‘upper mid-table’, but I could be mistaken.

Football365 used to produce such tables but seem to have stopped publishing stats since October.

The link attached earlier enables you play with the dates.

2 points a game gets you near promotion, we were spot on at end of jan but took only 1 point per game in Feb and never really recovered. April screws it up a bit more.

Somebody in another thread said our form since 1st Jan had us in 9th place, so your intuition isn't far off.
