Title: Smokers?
Post by: sonicyouth on Sunday, April 19, 2015, 17:58:54
Everyone I know is giving up. Who else isn't and can't be arsed because smoking is cool as fuck?

My boss at work is using one of those Vape stick things. Good idea but terrible name, especially the brand that has a stylised V which looks rather too much like an R.

How did you find the time to smoke 40+ a day?

I stand alone.

This is getting embarrassingly one-sided. Can any of the smokers come out of their oxygen tent long enough to register a vote?

I still smoke mainly because everyone else seems to think its cool to moan about it.

nope, quit abuot 5 years ago. Was easily on 20+ a day.

Almost 10 quid a pack these days.

I've seen predictions that by 2035 smoking will have all but died out here, with a small core of gnarly old pensioners the only ones still lighting up.  The way things are heading, it may not be so far fetched.  Kids these days don't seem interested.

Give up in 1994  . Gave up various times before without really wanting too.

I dont care what people say if you want to give up you will.

Meant 2004. Gave up many times before but stuck to it. I used to get up and first thing was to have a fag .

Never smoked, not interested, detest it.

However, around here I'm amazed at how many kids smoke. I'm talking about college age, 16-19 kind of bracket.

Never smoked and was never interested. Each to their own.

Most people I know who smoke are giving up or have given up.

Quit the habit about 10 years ago. Wanted to set a good example for my kids and think it worked.
Not fashionable to smoke nowadays and that's great. It really does make people stink and that becomes more apparent as time passes

You don't realise it when you're a smoker yourself, but once you stop you can smell it on other people and it's fucking horrid.

Driving around the country and out and about generally I'm astonished by the amount of young females who smoke. You can't plead ignorance of the dangers in this day and age. I'm one of five inc my patents and the only one who has not smoked. Never seen the appeal. If it's that good for you and that great why would you run from a burning house with all that free smoke to suck into your lungs, not withstanding the heat element of course.

I quit full time smoking 11 years ago and social smoking 8 years ago.

I struggle to stand with people smoking now, as can't bear the smell.

I just noticed how relevant my avatar is.

I enjoy smoking and a pack of 20 can last an entire week or a couple of days depending on work/weather. I don't think I smoke enough to smell constantly awful, my teeth and fingers aren't yellow, I'm unhealthy already and I never smoke around non-smokers.

Who was the third yes vote?

Smoking is the easiest thing to give up.

I should know, I've Done it Hundreds of Times.

"Ernest Hemmingway" Quote I think.

Used to smoke 20 a day ( Cigarettes ) Now 3 Cafe Cremes ( Cigarillos ) a day.

Interesting to know if anyone knows how many cigarettes that is equivalent too.
My Mrs swears its like back to 20 a day. ( Cigarettes )

I voted yes. I still roll my own but have been using the vaping stuff to cut down and hopefully give up altogether one day.
It's helped a lot, I'm down to less than a quarter of my previous smoking intake, 4 roll ups a day instead of 20. But apparently the EU are looking to ban it as it hasn't been medically approved.

I think willpower is the only way to go. What have all you ex-smokers used to give up?

I think my generation was probably one of the first ones who started to think that maybe smoking wasn't all that cool. I know a lot of kids now who would rather spend the money on something else.

I've never done it (bar the standard taste of one in my early teens and the odd cigar), and don't have any particular reason to be drawn to it.

I voted yes even though I'm not currently smoking, as my quitting attempts generally last two weeks to a month.

I can get a packet for 30p, but most/all are fakes or really poor quality and make my chest feel awful smoking ten a day. I really fucking hate smoking, until I forget and then start again.

Never smoked, never felt the desire or need to smoke even though my mum and dad both smoked 20+ a day.

My wife quit when a pack of 20 cigarettes went up to £2 she went cold turkey and just gave up, she says she hasn't missed it at all.

I gave up in 2010, cold turkey. I've had the odd fag here and there, but having attempted to give up previously, on several occasions, I know it's a slippery slope if you have the odd fag and luckily have never allowed the habit to reform.

I do still miss it on occasion though.

Same as that regarding parents, both smoked, I tried it once when i was much younger, didn't like it and could see nothing in it!  Wife never smoked!

I don't mind people using vaping as a tool to give up. But what I've seen more and more of is people using it as an excuse to smoke inside and be just as anti social as they used to be with fags. I know it's only water vapour,  but it's been in your mouth and nose so excuse me if I'm not happy to have it blown in my face. I'm also of the opinion that if you vape as much as you used to smoke it's not really giving up. It's just replacing one habit with another.

Yep, I smoke! Anywhere between 10-40 a day depending if I'm on the beers or not. If I go out I can get through a packet of 20 in no time!

I'm a yes. I basically smoke when I like though. Stopped for a few months on those vape things, but ended up feeling worse than when I was smoking so I generally just buy a packet when I feel like it. If I'm not drinking then 10 ciggies might last me 3 days. I can easily get through 10 - 15 on a football saturday, but I've not had one since then and don't feel any ill effects or withdrawal symptoms .

Smoke socially, pint and a fag is an enjoyable combination for me.

Vape during others times should i get a craving.  Not doubt it's only a matter of time until an over the top ban of vaping in certain places comes into place.

"Vaping" I don't have a problem with, but I've experienced several people that think because it's not a traditional cigarette it's ok to use it anywhere they want - like in a restaurant or I've even seen someone use one during a business meeting.

I prefer vaping to smoking and haven't smoked since mid-January thanks to that.

Although I'm enjoying vaping less and less. I think I may stop altogether soon for that reason.

It's a good year to give up smoking and vaping. Next year the EU tobacco products directive will come into force and make things much more difficult for vaping.

Interesting to see the tobacco industry, the pharmaceutical industry and the government all join forces to kill vaping. For the government £9bn in tobacco tax income v less than £3bn in smoking related problems spent by the health authorities. No surprises there.

For the record I've tried all sorts of stuff to give up. I like vaping but it's not the answer.

I have smoked since I was 11 years old. I currently smoke 40+ per day. I also vape to cut down on my cigarette consumption, yet that is failing due to the lack of a "kick". I have been clinically diagnosed as suffering from "severe nicotine addiction". And, since I have "contacts" whereby I only pay £3 for a pack of 20 fags I am not really bothered.

Deep down, I should give more consideration to my health. So should people who eat food with large quantities of saturated fat. So should people who (supposedly) drink too much. Add on all the other health scares we are told about.

I have a grandfather who gave up smoking aged 22/23 yet died of lung cancer aged 69.
My ex-wife died of lung cancer aged 34 yet never smoked.
My father died aged 79 from emphysema and smoked heavily.

Years ago, Gordon Brown (in his Budget), stated that 50 pence per packet of cigarettes would be directly donated to the NHS. Can anyone provide an update on that ?
The Government stands between a rock and a hard place. It enjoys the the revenues from tobacco sales yet is morally obliged to take legislative action to force us to quit.

We're all going to die soon, so who gives a fuck. As long as Franchise do before I do.

Same as. Think it's because the tobacco flavour vapours taste horrible and nothing like the real version to me.  The menthol is quite pleasant.

There are some bloody weird flavours you can get though
