Title: Rochdale vs Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Red Frog on Monday, April 13, 2015, 23:21:51
On the back of my 100% thread-starting win record to date, I thought I'd give it another shot.

Rochdale is the epitome of the depressed northern industrial town, but after years of fabled failure, its club is currently poised for what must be its highest-ever league position. Imagine what Rochdale's equivalent to Reg must be like…

Rochdale's tourist board has not been helped by its population in recent times. Paedophile scandals have extended right up to its formerly beloved fat, friendly Lib Dem knight of the realm, Sir Cyril Smith. Though its current MP Simon Danczuk seems to get a pretty good press for his persistent truth-seeking. Only other Daleites I can think of are Lisa Stansfield, and I think Gracie Fields. There, that's my brain emptied of all Rochdale-related data.

The result? Nervy, with a patched-up defence likely to concede against a side that looked good in mullering us at home (at a game that I chose to come over to watch, bien sűr). Daren't go for better than 1-1.

They've won 6 straight at home.  Going for a 1-2 win.

No they haven't,  they lost to the blades on 24th February. Still, they have won the last 5  :)

Foderingham
Thompson, Stephens, Ricketts
Byrne, Toffolo
Kasim, Luongo, Swift
Obika, Hylton

Is how I would line up, I personally would give Hylton a start as we are just about guaranteed a play off place and if he can start a scoring run in time for the play offs then brilliant.

Doesnt look too bad to me but the subs bench may be a little weak with
Belford, Smith, Rodgers, Williams, Barthram, Barker, Randall

Keith Hill has come out with something a bit special...

"If they were to get promoted with the many loan signings that they’ve got – for me that’s an infringement of the rules."

http://totalswindonsport.com/2015/04/dale-boss-criticises-swindons-use-of-loan-market/#sthash.tKvCAceg.dpuf

First of all, no Keith, it's not an infringement of the rules. There are a set number of loans available to a club each season, and we've used a number within that limit. Secondly, what difference would getting promoted make? Either we've broken the rules or we haven't.

He also fails to mention that we had Kasim and Luongo missing for a whole month, perhaps he'd prefer the B team league that Dyke proposed.Smacks of jealously that they can't attract quality loan players.I hope we stuff them tonight, going for 3-2 with Ricketts,Hylton and Williams for Town

Rochdale was home to the Rochdale Pioneers, founders of the Co-Operative Movement.....so massive respect from me for the place.

I also used to like it when watching Grandstand as a kid, that you had Rochdale Hornets rugby league, who like the FC, never seemed to do much yet happily formed part of our nation's sporting fabric.

They did a job on us, yes, but only because we completely failed to defend set pieces. We were poor and still should have come away with at least a point.

Given we've only got 2 defenders much good in the air Branco and Turnbull, tonight might be a struggle.

That's unfair on them. They got their game plan perfect. Closed us down high up the pitch and marked man-for-man when Wes had the ball.

Title: Re: Rochdale vs Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Power to people on Tuesday, April 14, 2015, 15:40:02
If memory serves correct they let Wes have all the space he needed to bring the ball out but marked real tight in midfield really stifeling (sp?) our attacking options.

I'm sure they will try that tactic again tonight tonight as they had asuccess so hopefully Cooper has found a way to counteract it

Think they might doing something a little different at home. The onus would be on them. Anyway, I thought they weren't that impressive at the CG. If Branco had pushed up when everyone else did, they would have all been offside.

Post by: CalRed45 on Tuesday, April 14, 2015, 16:27:08
Would be happy with a point from tonight but lets hope its 3, going for a 2-1. They had their game plan spot on last time so would expect them to be on it again tonight.

Been mentioned many times before but this love in between City and Preston fans is getting embarrassing now,

I'm 90% sure that's true.  I think they have too much firepower and momentum to slip. But I thought that about us when we blipped against some less good teams. It ain't over until its over, and keeping the pressure on without expectation for it to work might get us our own momentum.

Game over.

Good professional second half, shame about conceding 2, but its not that important tonight.

Can't believe I'm slightly disappointed we've probably 'only' secured a playoff place with 5 (five) games still to go. Still, at least we can properly go shit or bust from hereon in.

Cooper:
- Not very happy to only win by 2 after being 4-0 up; could have been 10.
- Defended very well to begin with
- Look at positive, 3 points.
- Preston stumbling, need to keep going. Gives opportunities to get back at them.
- Would have bitten hand off if given current league position at start of season.
- Been bantering Gladwin about lack of goals, he replied well tonight, exciting prospect.
- Nathan would deal more comfortably than Jack at wide so Jack played sweeper.

Great to see us clinical infront of goal tonight, Gladwin's breakaway 1st (from a Wes save) was fantastic to watch. Thought Massimo and Byrne played much more to their pre Christmas form levels than what I've seen of late, Smith put in a shift and for me, other than Gladwin, they were the pick of our bunch. 2nd half all felt a bit academic but at times Rochdale were chasing shadows with our keep possession. Good night out, topped off by blagging a lift back to the station from some very kind Dale fans.

From their forum....

Quote
There number 3 is good.

Their no. 4 was even better. Walked his way through the game.
That Swindon display is up there with as good as anything ever seen at Spotland.

Number 4 is Luongo. Courted by teams at a much much higher level than League 1. Class act.

Swindon were bloody good. They struck me as a team who once they get the lead, it's incredibly difficult to do anything about it (I know the game at their place contradicts this). Was like watching some 12 year old geek playing Fifa at times, with their movement and passing. Obviously we lost it during the first half, but it still took a tremendous effort by them to manage the game in the second half, and against a lesser side, we might have been able to pull off the impossible, but not against a side as good as this.

Sometimes you've got to hold your hands up. They were very good tonight. There 3 and 4 genuinely look like prem players in waiting.

Thought 4-1 at half time flattered them, although they were a great side, they literally had 4 chances and that showed how clinical they where

Loungo ran the game, was class when on loan at Ipswich not too long ago, still has the class.

Hilly was well and truly outdone by Cooper Man tonight......end of.

Superb finishing by Swindon tonight and perhaps a lesson learned that we should've made use of loans to shore up the squad , especially given the injury problems we've had.

Swindon are the best side I've seen all season, in fact, I enjoyed watching them even though they beat us twice, 5-0 on aggregate. I look forward to them beating Sheff Utd on penalties at Wembley.

Sometimes you just have to say we were beaten by the better side. We didn't play badly at all tonight - indeed, with a bit more luck we could've easily scored a few more goals - but Swindon were fantastic.

Swindon were clearly a cut above us, and deserve to be where they are in the league. I'd put them above Preston in terms of ability, though they might lack a bit of grit

No shame at all, Swindon are a class above anything seen this season. They just always seemed to have a lot of time on the ball, fantastic one touch passing, certainly a style Hill would want want to implement here.

I thought that as well - what a twat.

Also the reporter was pissing himself with excitement:

"fantastic amazing scenes here at valley parade"

meaning

"five fat ugly wurzels destroying 'the reds are going up' whilst scrambling to get on film and gobbing all over the camera"

Fantastic scenes.

Got to agree their fans are, by the most, gobshites - but as a team, this season, they have been terrific and I'm jealous of their chairman who seems a good egg with more money than a cow's got cunt.

Money talks indeed. But not all clubs that throw money around like water make it to the top division. Or even for that matter stay in the Championship (Wolves, Southampton, Forest, Lids in recent years).

Cracking result last night. I certainly did not expect that. Its good to hear from Rochdale fans that they played well but that we were better. Good to hear Luongo and Byrne playing well. Great goals from us. Thier penalty was as soft as you can get. Hopefully we get confidence from this win and if we win our next 2 at home then it could get interesting. Well done Gladys. When others go it will give him a bigger chance to shine.

To be honest, City fans liked the look of Byrne and Luongo as well, it's our fans who have been disappointed in recent times.  Either it's because a wobble in form causes us to look more closely at our players or that over time we become accustomed to their best days and expect it more often I think.

Good finishes from Gladers. However the defending for all 6 goals was appalling!

On a completely unrelated note, the 82ers to 2500 to Preston, so getting additional tickets shouldn't be a problem (not that we'll need them).

Gladwin was fantastic last night given a free role in the middle of midfield which is his preferred position he reminds me of a young Chris Waddle in his heyday. Luongo seems to be better when playing the holding role he is so strong on the ball and they just struggled to get the ball off of him last night. Byrne also had his best game for a while mainly down to the fact they did not double up on him like others have , I came away from the game last night very optimistic that we could win the play offs .

I don't think we'll sell them but pretty sure they would have to give us more if we wanted them. 1600 is less than the 10% minimum allocation I think?!

It all depends. This could be a game which decides our season, meaning we take as many as we're given, or it could effectively be a dead rubber with only 600 bothering.

Totally agree. He gets slated constantly where I sit, and whilst he does frustrate me when he slows the play down when he doesn't need to, his talent is obvious. If we stay in League One he will be a huge player for us next year.

I can't see this happening. We rarely take a load to the stupidly far big games regardless of the importance. I could be wrong though.

If it could be us taking 2nd spot I'd guess about 2.5k, if it could be us being equal with them I'd say 1-1.5k, any other situation would be < 1k.

I think he gets slated a lot when he plays wide left, out of position, because he has to bring it back onto his right foot to deliver a cross, its obviously not his best position whereas last night he was playing exactly where he is best, running through the middle with the ball.

He gets slated because of the Waddle comparison. Some people perceive it to be slowness or lack of effort.  N Thompson expressed it well last night comparing him to a Rolls Royce, which suggests the team know how good he is, but that description is also good because it distinguishes him against a more busy style player.  He plays with a bit of pomp, and that will mean he will sometimes miss quick breaks or try a little too much with the ball at foot.  You can't drill that out of him because it's the by product of his style of play and you just have to accept it because he's good enough in every other aspect.

The away stand holds 6000, usually they give up to 3000 tho unless its a massive following.
Unless we win the next 2 and they wobble I can't see us selling the 1700 we have.
Long schlep for a meaningless fixture

Have been thinking about recent precedents up here for crunch games in division 3 and our away following: the best I can come up with is Leeds at Elland Rd in April 2010 when we won & went 2nd. We took 1,700 but not sure we sold out our full allocation that day. Looking at the table, IF we keep winning, we would go to Deepdale with a chance of drawing level with Preston, in which case reckon we'd sell out our initial allocation and maybe take a few hundred more if they let us have the tickets. Otherwise we'll take sub 1,000. Win our next three and tickets for Col U......going to stop dreaming right now. Anyway I've got tickets for both.

Just need Preston to drop points Friday.

I would describe his as being languid, it doesn't help that he is a fairly big lad and thus seems to stroll around the pitch.

I had a recollection that he was stated to be a defender when we signed him, however even at that stage the BBC seemed a little confused... http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25068506

Should have scored more and Hylton should have had a penalty but got booked it looked a bolt on penno, gladwin was unplayable tonight given the freedom of the midfield. Anyone who says luongo does not care is either blind or mad he was back to his best . Play like that then we can win the playoffs

Last season we had part of the side stand with the home fans ( and the fucking drum ) while the stand behind the goal remained empty.
I guess its what Colchester guess we will take that dictates what stand they have given us. At least this year you can buy tickets from stfc. Last year had to order them from Colchester which resulted in many unwanted emails about tickets for their games.

Coyne was one of those who seemed to be as much a second striker as a midfielder....two pens in that game.  I remember it being a Friday night early season, so stood on the Bank. We'd had a dodgy start and weren't too convincing on the night, but with not long to go at 2-2, dear old Russell Lewis helped us out with a totally obvious and unnecessary handball for Coyney's hat-trick pen.
