Will be an arm chair fan for the MK game I'm afraid. A 340 mile round trip will inevitably have an effect on most people's ability to attend home games. I know, I know - there are probably people on here who live in John 'O Groats or Berlin or Fiji who go to every home game but there you go...

HOWEVER... I have got my tickets for the Orient game on the final day if that helps  ;)

I've been feeling nervous (in a good way) about this since the 19th March. It will have felt like an eternity when the day finally comes.

At least there should be no excuse about the cost for this one - haven't had a home game for weeks so people's wallets should be bulging like Beckham's Y-fronts.

This could well be a shit or bust game as far as the autos go - unless PNE fuck up today and/or Good Friday.

We haven't got a particularly good record against Franchise - they've won 6 out of last 8 - but I'm confident we will turn them over.

Not a criticism labelled at anyone but it seems as if there's quite a high proportion of people on here who don't go to games, mainly due to living far away. I would have thought the 'diehards' are on here or is it because these are the people who want to hear about STFC due to not being able to watch them?

For the size of Town, catchment area, no competition from local clubs and the fact that where we are in the League our support is poor.
May upset some but this is my opinion. Have to question even if we did reach the Championshop whether we could sustain an average Championship side, I sadly would question that.
My thoughts though are honourable. STFC is an important part of my life and would love to see average crowds up a few thousand.
One thing for sure the players and management deserve to be playing in front of bigger crowds.
Looking forward to Saturday. Put Swindon on the map wherever I go and never want to disappoint, just love my Club.

The TEF, which is past its 10th birthday...has never been a home to many who go to games on a regular basis....  but there has always been a few who do.

 Hence it's never really been a proper football forum...the bollocks quota seeing to that.

Of those that don't go...for some it's obviously distance, for some it's because of cost, for some it's because they don't like the manager/owner/ goal music/players.   Then there are those that used to go as lads, then get their balls chopped off by a missus/partner etc.

Mostly, they feel like Town fans, so want to keep in touch.

We should put a mural of fans in front of the Stratton bank similar to when Arsenal built their clock end at Highbury. That would give the illusion of the CG being fuller that it was.

In our last 'first season back' in the Championship, 96/97, we were averaging between 9 and 10k for most home games. I think with increased away followings, and hopefully an up turn in interest, we'd do similar next year.

A small crowd by Championship standards no mistake, but with increased TV revenue, clubs being willing to lend us a higher standard of loanee and Powers wiley ways in the market, I'm optimistic we could compete.

If this is to the tune of "Fight, Fight" (or "Lord of the Dance" as it was before it got mugged), then I still have some difficulty in fitting in all the syllables of the last line.

Unless you've got one of those clever "Ever fallen in love with someone ya shouldnafalln in love with" tricks up your sleeve.

Interesting, if you look at the online bookings the Town End is much less than half full and the Arkells too, only the Intel looks over half occupied.

I've looked a few days before a game before and thought the same. Based on my limited and admittedly anecdotal evidence, it seems a lot of tickets get sold in the final few days before a game.

I think the fact that we've not played for what feels like an eternity has heightened the tension/anticipation or whatever you want to call it, even more.

There used to be a guy who followed the Town religiously. Home and Away. I was in my teens ( circa 1978 ---> 1983 ) at the time and this guy was a Legend to me and my little oik friends at the Time. He used to travel to a lot of the away games on a big scooter thing. He was known as shitbag to us back in the day. REASON. He wore a Colostomy bag and used to change it in the toilets when it was full and launch the full one into the Away End from the Home Fans on the Stratton Bank.

I can even remember a chant from the the Town End urging him on on occasion.

They are notoriuosly badly supported away from home and with it being an early KO and on TV even if they have filled 4 coaches (offering half price travel).

Two big problems with that.

Firstly, Wimbledon weren't getting many fans at the end because they were boycotting the games due to the move.

Secondly, even if Wimbledon had gone bust, their place should have been taken by a club that had earned the right to be in the league, not just by one that was made up on the spot

If anyone's looking to watch both games but doesn't have Sky, you can buy passes to watch Sky Sports through Now TV.

If you like drinking Carling, you can get a free day pass with some promotional offers. Or, some people sell them on eBay - I picked one up for the Coventry game for £4 or so. Looking now, they generally go for £5+ or £6.99 direct from Sky. It might work out cheaper to buy a 7 day pass for £10.99 if you intend to watch both games.

To be honest herthab, the atmosphere at games was for me one of the attractions of attending. With a lot of grounds generally quiet, with the odd bit of moaning now and again, the appeal has diminished for me. I'd rather save the dosh and watch it in the silent but warm surroundings of my lounge.

I've got no problem with crowds increasing. My problem's with the stay aways.

I think the plastic tag gets used at games such as Chelski when they all come out the woodwork to see a prem team.

Surely this has been done to death - It's not a sporadic interest, it's a sporadic ability. Lots of people, me included, would love to go every weekend if time and money were infinite. As it is, I now pick and choose a handful of games, and obviously it's more likely to be big games against City, or Easter Saturday, or the last few home games of the season.

The trust are doing the school tickets again. My brother and nephew got tickets this way.

I think there will be cases like yourself but not sure it's that widespread.

Take Preston not hugely bigger as a place but also has a large number of clubs on doorstep competing for available fans  (plus as everyone says it's grim up north and full of slums ::) ) and yet they average 10kish.

I agree with Panda Paws (and I also don't think it's that hard to understand) - the key is 'if time and money were infinite'. If that was the case I would quite possibly go to every game or at the very least, the vast majority.

We seem to like to bash ourselves for our support or perceived lack thereof and we compare ourselves to the likes of Preston, Bradford and Portsmouth. In the lower divisions though, Clubs with that kind of support are very much the exception (Why they have such good support - Portsmouth in particular at the present time - I really don't know).

For every Preston, there's a Colchester, who struggle to get 4,000 even when they are doing OK. This season they are struggling to get 3,000. For every Bradford there's an Oldham, who got under 3,000 the other week against MK. There are loads of Clubs with really poor support in the lower leagues who would love to have our support but we look at the few exceptions and use them as examples to beat ourselves up with.

I am not saying our support couldn't be better and I wish it was BUT it is not as bad as some make it out to be.

Having roots from "Peortsmouth" it's mainly down to having an identity.
Swindon in general lacks an identity, equally has more outsiders living in it.
Many of the places mentioned have gone through deprived times and the community links to their football club. This last statement alone is missing in Swindon.
Need to lock in the next generation.
There has been times when I had the odd regret not following Pompey but you know what I love Swindon and have a Pompey football outlook.

That is all true Duke and when you consider that, as you rightly say, the population of Swindon is nowhere near as big as it at first seems when you take away the 'outsiders', the support is actually not that bad.

But you are quite right, the Club need to engage with the next generation as they are doing. That way, for the sons and daughters of those 'outsiders' the Club will become their Club.

The other thing is that I think we have a largish number of lapsed fans as opposed to, say, Muff, whose extra fans this season are newly manufactured and will disappear just as quickly when things go tits up on the south coast.

For this reason, I reckon we have a very decent bedrock of support, with a large latent support which would return if we went up.

Of course, we could also add on our own 'new' fans.

I still feel the club could do more to attract kids. Not necessarily in swindon, but outside swindon in rural schools. For example, schools in Oxfordshire which have a swindon postcode ie. Shrivenham. I see a lot of Oxford and even arsenal posters offering after school clubs and soccer days.

Not sure Oxford's free ticket offer to all council employees is proving a huge success. They extended the 4 free tickets promotion to a school in Marlborough yesterday (with a deadline to reply by today…). Tanks on our lawn.

Swindon will never attract huge support. Not much in it as far as support base is concerned
with Milton Keynes at the moment. Once Milton Keynes progress to the championship though
(as they surely will) there will be no stopping them. In just twelve years since the relocation
to the Hockey stadium to the excellent home in Denbigh the progress has been rapid. An excellent
academy, a fine array of managers including Dimatteo, Ince, Robinson. Some very decent crowds indeed
with several 20,000 plus including over 27,000 v United last August. Milton Keynes are also starting to earn
respect for among other things their stylish football, plaudits for the facilities emphasised by the fact it's the
most visited ground in League 1 by away fans (boycotts) ? Milton Keynes would be an excellent addition to the
Championship. Hoping for a decent game tomorrow between two good sides and may the best team win !

I would have thought that Franchise have the biggest identity of any league team. The fact that loathesome pieces of shit decide to attach themselves to it fills most normal people with disgust. It looks like Leeds (probably) v Chelsea (definitely - you can see Chopper Harris). I wouldn't have thought it's the Shed End at Chelsea as they would be wearing blue, not yellow if that was the case. I didn't think Elland Road had an uncovered end like that in the 70's so I'm wondering if it's a semi final at Hillsbrough?
