Title: Countdown to Franchise on TV.
Post by: TheDukeOfBanbury on Saturday, March 28, 2015, 20:06:00
The opportunity to show the Country what a fantastic side we are and put on a display that is a credit to League One football.

Now the important part ....the support.
Turn up and create a special atmosphere, sing, shout but most of all show our support and refrain from simply watching it on TV.
Would be rather disappointing to see so many empty seats, bar the Stratton Bank for one of the most important games of the season.
Feel proud when other fans watch us on TV and say we sounded loud. Here is our chance see you all at the CG next Saturday.
Looking forward already.

12:15 KO....not going to happen especially v Franchise. Days like in 79, when we had similar fixtures v Swansea and Watford are long gone....16000 + turn outs

Just got my tickets through the post. Although I am a season ticket holder , they have moved me for the Tv  cameras to the nearest seat which is 17 rows down.

Tempted to just go to the pub.

I'll be there to witness the death throes of the Franchise season.

The 82ers are getting a bit twitchy, too. Fuck knows why with the lead they have.

Maybe they know something we don't.

Then make history now.

For the record Swansea 0-1 and Watford 2-1 (Motd) it was different for sure without sky.
Don't make excuses and lead by example then :)

They have moved mine, they always do for a TV game as I sit next to where they place the gantry.
No excuse.
Have new allocated seats but will see if my current seats are free even if a restricted view.
Don't make excuses and go soft.

My Apologies then ..... Different identity.
Did you ever go to the FA cup game at old Plough Lane the real Wimbledon.
1980 we lost 2-0 and the wall collapsed.
Jimmy Allen helped my when I fell and got twisted up,in the goal net :)

With you all the way history and only one Wimbledon not a franchised version.
Another opportunity for the football community to tune in and watch us.

Went to all of those 70's 80's encounters at a Plough Lane.
Our paths would have crossed no doubt albeit we would have got on the train at Didcot.
Now that must have been painful the next day ..... :)

Will be an arm chair fan for the MK game I'm afraid. A 340 mile round trip will inevitably have an effect on most people's ability to attend home games. I know, I know - there are probably people on here who live in John 'O Groats or Berlin or Fiji who go to every home game but there you go...

HOWEVER... I have got my tickets for the Orient game on the final day if that helps  ;)

I've been feeling nervous (in a good way) about this since the 19th March. It will have felt like an eternity when the day finally comes.

At least there should be no excuse about the cost for this one - haven't had a home game for weeks so people's wallets should be bulging like Beckham's Y-fronts.

This could well be a shit or bust game as far as the autos go - unless PNE fuck up today and/or Good Friday.

We haven't got a particularly good record against Franchise - they've won 6 out of last 8 - but I'm confident we will turn them over.

Followed by the 82ers on Tuesday.

Not a criticism labelled at anyone but it seems as if there's quite a high proportion of people on here who don't go to games, mainly due to living far away. I would have thought the 'diehards' are on here or is it because these are the people who want to hear about STFC due to not being able to watch them?

For the size of Town, catchment area, no competition from local clubs and the fact that where we are in the League our support is poor.
May upset some but this is my opinion. Have to question even if we did reach the Championshop whether we could sustain an average Championship side, I sadly would question that.
My thoughts though are honourable. STFC is an important part of my life and would love to see average crowds up a few thousand.
One thing for sure the players and management deserve to be playing in front of bigger crowds.
Looking forward to Saturday. Put Swindon on the map wherever I go and never want to disappoint, just love my Club.

The TEF, which is past its 10th birthday...has never been a home to many who go to games on a regular basis....  but there has always been a few who do.

Hence it's never really been a proper football forum...the bollocks quota seeing to that.

Of those that don't go...for some it's obviously distance, for some it's because of cost, for some it's because they don't like the manager/owner/ goal music/players.   Then there are those that used to go as lads, then get their balls chopped off by a missus/partner etc.

Mostly, they feel like Town fans, so want to keep in touch.

So, we've learnt two things...

1. This is not a 'proper' football forum (I would love to know what exactly constitutes a 'proper' football forum)

2. I am not actually a Town fan, I just 'feel' like one.

Nice.

On some fora, it's like an extension of football manager, goons droning on about this player's pass ratio, that player's ability to find pockets of space.....endless drivel about formations etc.  Fair enough some people like this sort of shit...and there's room for a bit of it, but too much overwhelms the important stuff. The important stuff like manatees, and how the baby club is getting on.

I would posit that, as to whether you "are" or "feel" a fan is a metaphysical question....perhaps Utter Kant, could give us an answer.

We should put a mural of fans in front of the Stratton bank similar to when Arsenal built their clock end at Highbury. That would give the illusion of the CG being fuller that it was.

Think this should probably have been addressed before now, but we (well, you actual attender-wallahs) need to organise a properly hate-filled, abusive song to show the nation, via the medium of the telly, our world leadership in Franchise-hatred.

Something that evokes their plasticity, their shitty soulless town with its concrete cows, and their complete moral turpitude for buying into the biggest daylight theft since the Great Train Robbery.

Can some of you shouty types get onto it in time for a few rehearsals before Saturday? Thank you.

May upset some but this is my opinion. Have to question even if we did reach the Championshop whether we could sustain an average Championship side, I sadly would question that.

In our last 'first season back' in the Championship, 96/97, we were averaging between 9 and 10k for most home games. I think with increased away followings, and hopefully an up turn in interest, we'd do similar next year.

A small crowd by Championship standards no mistake, but with increased TV revenue, clubs being willing to lend us a higher standard of loanee and Powers wiley ways in the market, I'm optimistic we could compete.

If this is to the tune of "Fight, Fight" (or "Lord of the Dance" as it was before it got mugged), then I still have some difficulty in fitting in all the syllables of the last line.

Unless you've got one of those clever "Ever fallen in love with someone ya shouldnafalln in love with" tricks up your sleeve.

And I don't think we should honour them with city-status.

Interesting, if you look at the online bookings the Town End is much less than half full and the Arkells too, only the Intel looks over half occupied.

I would love us to get 9k for this but I doubt there will be more than 250 dongs there.

I've looked a few days before a game before and thought the same. Based on my limited and admittedly anecdotal evidence, it seems a lot of tickets get sold in the final few days before a game.

Thank you.

Hello. Returning to this forum after an absence of five years or so. We need a decent song for Mass, so how about, to the tune of 'Remember You're A Womble' to rub the MK Donkey's noses in it?

Sung alternately by the TE and DR:

Massimo Luongo...
Massimo Luongo...

The end bit needs some rehersal...

Massi, Massi, Massi, Massi, Massi-mo Lu-on-guo.

Found on twitter from the football league account...

@Lukehodgson_22: Match officials up to and including Tuesday 7th April >> http://t.co/5hpJSuykHB.” Paul Tierny for mk and Neil Swarbrick for city away for us then #stfc

@Lukehodgson_22: @Lukehodgson_22 tierney has refereed swindon once (luton1-2swindon) and Franchise once (bradford2-1mk) this season #omens @SamMorshead_

@Lukehodgson_22: @SamMorshead_ if my research is correct, #stfc last win with Swarbrick referee us (ref v bristol city) was back in April 2009 2-1 v the gas

Not been this excited/nervous about a couple of games since..well a while anyway.  I know the two games may not decide our destiny, but 4 points would be huge.
I think the fact that we've not played for what feels like an eternity has heightened the tension/anticipation or whatever you want to call it, even more.

This for me is actually what the play offs feel like and I think that's how both games will be played and will have that kind of atmosphere. Having said, I've not really given the City game a minute's thought as yet. I really can't look past Saturday.

Welcome back. I agree we need a song for Mass, but I do not believe this to be the answer!

Also agree with the need for a decent anti-Franchise chant as mentioned earlier in the thread. Perhaps some sort of "Where were you when...?" type chant, or more simply something like "You're just a small plastic franchise". Basically anything that isn't to the tune of Sloop John B :D

I agree with this completely.

Hopefully the players won't be metaphorically on the beach, but it'll be understandable if they are....

In the mid 70's Reading were getting lower crowds than us, sub 7,000.
A typical club that we should be matching would be Burnley. I know a "hole" but not the biggest place in the UK they always turn out a decent crowd.
Yes you will argue that there is not much to do in Burnley but a club I respect for their numbers.

However in my experience the only chants that seem to catch on lately are things like..

"FUCK OFF FRANCHISE"

Which is still appropriate but not great

I know we've sung "you've got no history" to franchise before but if we could actually be loud and proud on telly about how disgusting this "club" is I would be a proud[er] town fan.

With regards to anti-MK chants, I would actually say don't waste your energy with the opposition. It is far, far more important for this one game to put all your efforts into supporting your own team.

Just a thought. I know it won't happen though.

Personally, the desire for my own team to succeed far outweighs my dislike of any other team.

You are right we do need to back the team more than run the opposition down.

why aren't all the efforts always put into supporting the team?

It had always astonished me but more so  lately that so much of the game is wasted all slagging of away support and Oxford. Maybe Maybe that's why the general match day atmosphere is is muted

I agree with this. Port Vale away was pretty good though. We were singing about the team the entire time.

However, with it being against franchise with the media here... it's a good opportunity to send abuse their way that the entire country would have done themselves.

As long as we're supporting our team throughout, I don't have a problem with singing about those we dislike.

There used to be a guy who followed the Town religiously. Home and Away. I was in my teens ( circa 1978 ---> 1983 ) at the time and this guy was a Legend to me and my little oik friends at the Time. He used to travel to a lot of the away games on a big scooter thing. He was known as shitbag to us back in the day. REASON. He wore a Colostomy bag and used to change it in the toilets when it was full and launch the full one into the Away End from the Home Fans on the Stratton Bank.

I can even remember a chant from the the Town End urging him on on occasion.

SHITBAG, SHITBAG, SHITBAG. etc.etc.etc.

If he is still about and anyone knows him. Sounds like we need a bit of free Consultancy.

I liked the bit where, since 1989, we are still paying £100,000 per year for some reason to somebody unknown.

We are still buying players despite having no money (how the fuck does that one work) and we threw bottles at them inside the ground somewhere, sometime.

That last bit does have some merit, though

I shouldn't get dragged into that forum but I can't resist. Their entire justification for their act of evil seems to be 'Wimbledon would have gone under, they weren't getting many fans'.

Two big problems with that.

Firstly, Wimbledon weren't getting many fans at the end because they were boycotting the games due to the move.

Secondly, even if Wimbledon had gone bust, their place should have been taken by a club that had earned the right to be in the league, not just by one that was made up on the spot

Ten years on and the Franchise filth still don't get it.

Never Forget. Never Forgive

Have to  admit that we never particularly look forward to a trip to Swindon Town.
But so be it someone's got to do it and it may as well be us! We are however striving
forward to bigger and better things. At least you can have another glimpse of our wonderful
stadium next season even if it's only via the rugby world cup.

Swindon 1 Mighty Dons 3

Why not? Town centre ground, plenty of pubs, easy to get in and out.

Not the best stadium but it's not some soulless bowl in the arse end of nowhere.

As much as I find franchise to be an abomination, I'm just not at all bothered with that aspect at this stage of the season. I just want us to go up, which of course means winning games. The game being a '6 pointer' obviously adds something to the game but asides from that, we had might as well be playing supermarine for all I care.

Let's just get promotion out of the way first, and then I'll start focusing more on what a blight on football they are.

I see the Franchise wankers despise us as a club as yet again another bunch of dimwits who have got their facts all wrong about our club yet they cheated their way into the FL which we all know about.
I hate MK as a club I hate their manager and most of all their wanker fans who no doubt will be bringing that poxy drum again to the CG and to me that is always a sign of a small club.
They are all moaning at the price we charge for away fans thinking that we have increased the price for them well again of they get their facts right its been the same price all season not for little old MK Plastics.
I fucking hate the bastards and hope we can give them a trouncing to shut that scouser prick Robinson up. :pint:

If anyone's looking to watch both games but doesn't have Sky, you can buy passes to watch Sky Sports through Now TV.

If you like drinking Carling, you can get a free day pass with some promotional offers. Or, some people sell them on eBay - I picked one up for the Coventry game for £4 or so. Looking now, they generally go for £5+ or £6.99 direct from Sky. It might work out cheaper to buy a 7 day pass for £10.99 if you intend to watch both games.

To be honest herthab, the atmosphere at games was for me one of the attractions of attending. With a lot of grounds generally quiet, with the odd bit of moaning now and again, the appeal has diminished for me. I'd rather save the dosh and watch it in the silent but warm surroundings of my lounge.

Surely this has been done to death - It's not a sporadic interest, it's a sporadic ability. Lots of people, me included, would love to go every weekend if time and money were infinite. As it is, I now pick and choose a handful of games, and obviously it's more likely to be big games against City, or Easter Saturday, or the last few home games of the season.

I think there will be cases like yourself but not sure it's that widespread.

Take Preston not hugely bigger as a place but also has a large number of clubs on doorstep competing for available fans  (plus as everyone says it's grim up north and full of slums ::) ) and yet they average 10kish.

I agree with Panda Paws (and I also don't think it's that hard to understand) - the key is 'if time and money were infinite'. If that was the case I would quite possibly go to every game or at the very least, the vast majority.

We seem to like to bash ourselves for our support or perceived lack thereof and we compare ourselves to the likes of Preston, Bradford and Portsmouth. In the lower divisions though, Clubs with that kind of support are very much the exception (Why they have such good support - Portsmouth in particular at the present time - I really don't know).

For every Preston, there's a Colchester, who struggle to get 4,000 even when they are doing OK. This season they are struggling to get 3,000. For every Bradford there's an Oldham, who got under 3,000 the other week against MK. There are loads of Clubs with really poor support in the lower leagues who would love to have our support but we look at the few exceptions and use them as examples to beat ourselves up with.

I am not saying our support couldn't be better and I wish it was BUT it is not as bad as some make it out to be.

Having roots from "Peortsmouth" it's mainly down to having an identity.
Swindon in general lacks an identity, equally has more outsiders living in it.
Many of the places mentioned have gone through deprived times and the community links to their football club. This last statement alone is missing in Swindon.
Need to lock in the next generation.
There has been times when I had the odd regret not following Pompey but you know what I love Swindon and have a Pompey football outlook.

There has been times when I had the odd regret not following Pompey but you know what I love Swindon and have a Pompey football outlook.
That is all true Duke and when you consider that, as you rightly say, the population of Swindon is nowhere near as big as it at first seems when you take away the 'outsiders', the support is actually not that bad.

But you are quite right, the Club need to engage with the next generation as they are doing. That way, for the sons and daughters of those 'outsiders' the Club will become their Club.

The other thing is that I think we have a largish number of lapsed fans as opposed to, say, Muff, whose extra fans this season are newly manufactured and will disappear just as quickly when things go tits up on the south coast.

For this reason, I reckon we have a very decent bedrock of support, with a large latent support which would return if we went up.

Of course, we could also add on our own 'new' fans.

I still feel the club could do more to attract kids. Not necessarily in swindon, but outside swindon in rural schools. For example, schools in Oxfordshire which have a swindon postcode ie. Shrivenham. I see a lot of Oxford and even arsenal posters offering after school clubs and soccer days.

Not sure Oxford's free ticket offer to all council employees is proving a huge success. They extended the 4 free tickets promotion to a school in Marlborough yesterday (with a deadline to reply by today…). Tanks on our lawn.

Swindon will never attract huge support. Not much in it as far as support base is concerned
with Milton Keynes at the moment. Once Milton Keynes progress to the championship though
(as they surely will) there will be no stopping them. In just twelve years since the relocation
to the Hockey stadium to the excellent home in Denbigh the progress has been rapid. An excellent
academy, a fine array of managers including Dimatteo, Ince, Robinson. Some very decent crowds indeed
with several 20,000 plus including over 27,000 v United last August. Milton Keynes are also starting to earn
respect for among other things their stylish football, plaudits for the facilities emphasised by the fact it's the
most visited ground in League 1 by away fans (boycotts) ? Milton Keynes would be an excellent addition to the
Championship. Hoping for a decent game tomorrow between two good sides and may the best team win !

Unashamed bump for this song. Start practising in the shower

A new stadium and a new ground for those who have never visited before......that's it after that.
No history, identity or any significance from other Supporters.
That sums it up. You have no local derby, simply you are a shallow, hollow club that all other supporters dislike.
But don't get excited about the "no one likes us we don't care" even that is wasted on you.
Must be great having the stigma that you don't exist labelled at you.
This shit will stick forever.

I would have thought that Franchise have the biggest identity of any league team. The fact that loathesome pieces of shit decide to attach themselves to it fills most normal people with disgust. Its a pity this vile creature "allwhitenow" and other consumers of Franchise try to justify their support instead of ignoring it and letting it rot.
I don't actually think its worth engaging in conversation with these creatures. Its like trying to tell a paedophile that shagging a 7 year old is wrong - they just don't get it so why the fuck bother. They exist on the fringes.

The love in between an 82er and the Franchise Customers on their forum is genuinely nausiating.

I'd rather any club, and I include Heaton United in this, got success than them. But it seems one of their lot is still so incensed by what happened last November (bet he was one of the police callers) that he's willing to break bread with the devil, and wish them luck against 'Swindle'.

I think, more to the point, if they'd got behind their existing non league team (Milton Keynes City?) and followed them to the league, I'd have nothing but respect for them.

As it is anything they 'achieve' now is meaningless

Franchise fans celebrating on the field success is like paying for a prostitute and then showing off about this fit bird you pulled.

This is more than a 6 pointer. More than a fight to the finish. It's a battle with the conceptnof Franchise football.

If you are truly Swindon - I hope you are - then fight Franchise football, & the MK abomination, with every fibre of your being.

We are Swindon.  We matter.  We are bigger than than that.

On another note, I'm loving the picture of the packed terrace above. I can't figure out what game it is though.

It looks like Leeds (probably) v Chelsea (definitely - you can see Chopper Harris). I wouldn't have thought it's the Shed End at Chelsea as they would be wearing blue, not yellow if that was the case. I didn't think Elland Road had an uncovered end like that in the 70's so I'm wondering if it's a semi final at Hillsbrough?

There are some wonderful pictures on the link below including the one above but it doesn't tell you what the game was. Actually I've just noticed it does say it is Leeds v Chelsea so that's confirmed but not the actual game.

Reg?

Check this out. Who'd have thought the Daily Mail would be good for something?
