Title: Fjortoft's return to the CG
Post by: JayBox325 on Monday, March 16, 2015, 14:52:35
Does anyone think that making a Fjortoft banner with the display money would be a good idea?

A silhouette of his celebration with some words maybe? I can mock a design up if people thing this is a good idea? Nothing too big, maybe 6x5 ft and I'll see if we would be allowed to mount it on some flag poles to make it stand out in the TE.

I can liaise with the club about it if we think it'll be a good use of some of the money?

Flags, banners, balloons, streamers all add to the occasion I suppose. The fact that one of the flags has a legend on it will hardly detract from what's going on and a lot of older Town fans will associate with it. Flags with heroes from the past are quite common around grounds; it helps I suppose to create a link.
I think it's a great idea. I also think that Sippo is a miserable cunt who's either on the blob or going through early menopause.

Come on.  A silhouette of Jan Aage Fjørtoft in full flight is about as iconic an image as you can get with Swindon Town.  And the image was all about us.  He may have carried it on with Middlesbrough and Sheff United, but the aeroplane was pioneered when he was our player.  It's about the joy & relief he (and we) felt when he finally broke his duck in that Cup game vs Ipswich, and the goal spree that followed.  Not enough to keep us in the Prem, but a ray of sunshine in an otherwise challenging season.

Do it, Jay.

Fjortoft = nice idea, but for my two pennyworth I think the bulk of the money should go on team support. A Jan banner would be ok if it doesn't  cost much. And Sippo is a cunt like the rest of us so stop jumping on him.

I'll do it as cheap as I can. I have £200 left in the bank for our support stuff. I was going to buy 4 huge flags, sew them together then print out a silhouette on a few A3 bits of paper taped together (unless I pay for A0 or something) then use the stencil as a guide to paint it on myself.

Then to make it legal in football grounds I'll get some fire retardant treatment spray.

White on red would work well. Shall we hang it somewhere, run two sticks up either side like the image below or use it as a surf banner on DRS?

Does anyone have any thoughts on words I could put on it?

I like the number 9 idea. Maybe a bolder font will less detail that'd be hard to make out from a distance would be more effective from a far distance?

Also, I'm looking at buying the material this week. How big do we think we should do? 150cm wide material sold by the meter. So if I buy two strips I can sew them together so we have a banner that's 300cm wide and I guess we could make it 400cm tall. See below mock up at 30cm x 40cm.

They're always welcome. The material is £15 if we make it 3m x 4m. Unless we want to go bigger? I guess we need to decide whether we're making a surf banner or a banner a couple of us could hold up.

Yeah, I'd go with that. And red and white are obviously the right colours!

So this will be a 3m wide banner. That's pretty much surf banner size. This is going to use up a lot of paint at that size! So I'm thinking this will cost us around £200 if we get it printed from somewhere like footballflags.co.uk or I can get the lengths of material, sew them together myself, get the paint, take the time to do the painting and buy some fire retardant treatment spray all for the following:

Material - £15
Fire protection - £15
White Acrylic - £5

£35 for the Fjortoft banner if we home-make it.

Everyone good with that? If you want to contribute financially to this banner I can PM you my paypal address.

Cheers.

My tip. Start with a white banner and get some red paint.

But the red:white ratio favours the banner being in red, surely? It'll be easier to stencil the white onto the red. I'll have to cut up the 3m wide image and print it on about 40 A3 pieces of paper unless I can find an A0 printer or something like that.

I'll be using a stencil though, so I hope that won't happen. Turns out my Dad's work has an A1 printer... so I need to cut the stencil up into A1 size chunks and stick them together...

So that £35 + paper costs for his business and we should be good to go! I might have to recruit some mates from work to help paint it on... I just measured it out an it's a bloody huge banner. 4 meters is actually huge... hahahaha

If high res exists for the following images...

Steve White vs. Gillingham (arms aloft)
Calderwood carried off by the fans vs. Chester
Don Rogers vs. Arsenal

These would be cool.

I really want to do one of these two, but with Louis never playing for us again and him going off to Norwich it seems odd spending money honouring him. But I'd be more than happy to do it, cause I'm a huge fan. Not to mention he has been with us since he was a young'un.

This is a good resolution! I'd ideally have an image that's 1000-2000 pixels big, but that'll do for now!

Just the outline of Nath, keeping only the name and number on the back of the shirt would be brilliant.

I'll mock it up this evening while listening to the game and get back to you. I need the Nathan one done for City (if I'm allowed to take it) and the Jan one for April 15... that's a lot of painting between now and then. Hahaha damn.

Bristol City are but sensitive, as we know. I'd be surprised if they let you bring it in to the ground.

They made their own fans take a banner down for the West Ham FA Cup tie. To the best of my knowledge it simply states 'East Enders'.

It now lives over the entrance to the 3 Lions pub on West Street.

I thought it was because it said "Ultras" and their owner didn't want to be associated with Eastern-European violence and discrimination that usually follows with the 'ultras' out that way. But that could be wrong.

I have sent them an email last week about what we'll be allowed to bring. I'll chase it up this week.

It won't be the photo on a banner, it'll be a white silhouette on red like the Fjortoft ones above.

I just sent a design off to a printer to get a quote on how much to get a stencil printed on huge paper. 3m is so fucking big that printing it out on A1 and sticking them together would take forever. If anyone has any friends in a printer business let me know, we could do with trying to save a bit of money on the stencil to keep costs down.

Cheers mate. It'll just be a very thin outline so it'll use almost no ink. But just needs to be able to make up a 3m x 4m stencil, a Bath-based print company were saying they'd do it in two long strips, so whatever you mate can offer.

Cheers

Jay, I totally respect your enthusiasm and eagerness to support the team and to encourage others to do likewise. At Vale I helped unfurl one of those red bog-rolls. After the final whistle, I slapped you on the shoulder and said "Well done mate" as we walked up the steps. You slapped me back. Cunt.

Please calm down a bit and utilise your funds to best effect. I think your website design and creative abilities are getting the better of you, when sometimes the the simplest of things can work better. Keep going, but slow down a bit. Please.

Haha. Cheers. I said hello to a lot of people that day so sorry if I don't remember!

I know what you mean. I'm trying to think of different ways of getting an atmosphere and getting people turning their heads at what we're doing so instead of doing the streamers, balloons etc I'm going to try and mix it up with some interesting banners.

Below is the rough plan so far and if you have any thoughts on what we should do better or if we shouldn't bother with something, let me know:

  • Franchise - red & white sheets in the Town End (ideally do something on DRS to get the crowd here involved)
  • City - streamers, balloons, sheets, flags etc... whatever they'll allow us to do.
  • Yeovil - Jan Age Fjortoft banner, I know we should be focussing on the current run but while he is at the CG it'd be good to recognise him
  • Preston - whatever we can get away with
  • Play offs...? - whatever we can get away with
  • Leyton Orient (Celebrate promotion??)- whatever we can get away with

£200 left in the bank for all of that. I have some sheets left from the Vale game to use, too. So if we have some people happy to donate specifically for the banner then we should be OK for the rest of the season. Every game is a big one and I want to keep the momentum in atmospheres going to the final day.

I think it should be written into the contract of all Swindon Town no. 9's that THIS is how they celebrate scoring.

I have got a quote back and it's looking like it'll be around £85 for a the Fjortoft stencil if I get it printed professionally. I have asked for a cheaper quote saying I'll stick it all together and cut it out, but I doubt they'll knock enough off. Looks like it'll be a night of sticking together a hundred A1 sheets it is ;)

I just got a quote back from MinuteMan in Bath and they can do it for £40 (mates rates) which will be 18 A0 prints. Which is pretty good.

So it'll be £15 for material (as long as the samples I asked for show it'll do the trick), £15 for fire protection (I'll talk to the club about whether this is needed) and £5 for paint.

Would anyone be happy to donate a few quid for the Fjortoft banner? I have a good few weeks to get this sorted so no rush.

Also, I'll be doing the Nathan Thompson one on a normal 3x5 flag which myself and someone else could hold up so this will be £5. ;)

Nah, he quoted £84 + VAT unfortunately, so I don't think there's much competition. If people are happy with surfing a Fjortoft banner while he's here for around £60, I'll get started.

Depends how professional it is I guess. Is the banner something that's going to last 1 game or is it likely to last and be able to be displayed in the future. If you get more than just the game out of it, I'd say £85 is pretty reasonable.

Haha. I dunno, it doesn't stand out to me as obviously wrong or out of place. I'll amend it if it's catching a lot of people's eyes though.

I have ordered a sample of the material I'm buying so if I think it'll work well enough I'll order the fabric. Here's how the finances treasury is looking:

£215
- £40 for the stencil
- £15 for the fabric
- £5 for the paint
- £15 for the fire protection

Leaves us with £140 to spend between now and the end of the season not forgetting I have about 30 streamers & the banquet paper left so we're good for now but if anyone is happy contributing towards the Fjortoft banner, let me know. :)

You can't focus on 2011/2012 without it being Di Canio heavy. The guy was the centre of the universe for us and rightly so (at the time). Although I think some fans are still bitter, he will definitely be looked back on with fondness as time goes on, it was a fucking great season.

Fair to say he was over the moon with it. He said "Thank you so much" about 200 times and hugged me a few times, too.  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

He did seem a bit blown away by it. Sam was nice enough to give me a shirt from the 93/94 season so I could get it signed. But the highlight for me was Jan asking where the banner was after the game so I pointed to the table where I chucked it in the Legends Lounge only for him to go and grab it to start dragging it out to the pitch announcing "Right, we're taking this outside to get a photo!"

So I got to hold it up with him on the County Ground pitch and get some photos with him and it. Probably one of the nicest guys I've ever met. Much friendlier than M. Smith was after the game when he walked past... but he did just lose a game of footy so I can't blame him...

Anyway, good job all round. The one downer is that nobody has even got a photo of it going across the crowd. :(

If you want to use it at Wembley you'll need to check the guidelines on the website. I think you have to have it fire protected and take proof with you.

Sorry I'm sketchy on the details but all I do know we got that London Reds flag confiscated within seconds of unfurling it pre Millwall and had to pick it up after the game.

Yeah, I've had a look. It's basically the same rules as Sheffield United. Which is why I'm leaning towards a mosaic SHOULD we get there. So I'm not looking into it just yet...

Haha. I'm not doing anything about it until it's guaranteed. I am tempted to do it in the DRS for the home second leg tbh.

But also, luckily I don't believe in all that crap! Looking at our recent form I'm fairly sure it won't be because of me ;). Yeovil were the unlikely winners a few years back...

I thought the Common Cold Unit had closed......went past the back of Porton Down couple of weeks back....that's one scary place. Had previously only ever glimpsed it from the main road through Boscombe, where youcan make out some tower type things in the distance.

What's it got to do with Fjortoft?

Bit of a tangent. Jay's intrepid celebrations, leading to Izal toilet paper (the celebration of choice back whenever), then onto questioning if said bog paper was ever product tested and finally to human testing at Porton Down.

Simples!

Hell's Angels....yikes, you never quite knew what you'd get with these boys. My scariest memory, puttling past Mannington Farm on my scooter at night, on my way to sure fire thing in Broad Town, and getting slapped by a chain from a group who were squatting in aforementioned place.

Those who know the farmhouse might be puzzled, but in 69, the bridge in Wootton Bassett Road by Running Horse....marked the edge of Swindon going west, a quiet country lane, then led to Bassett. I never explored that side of town before it was developed, I remember venturing out that way when the Carrefour supermarket opened, late 70s?
I also remember West Swindon Working Mens Club was in Radnor Street.
