His Swindon tenure wasn't a good but regardless he's a part of Town's footballing history. Farewell Dave Mackay.

RIP to one of the British footballing greats.

Even if he didn't achieve much with the Town we were his initial stepping stone to greater things in management, which included winning the old top flight in 74-75 only 2 years after leaving us.

I should bloody hope so.

These things are done too often these days in general but in this case it should be a no brainer

A much more positive response on here than I expected for a man that was despised by Town fans when he left. I guess time is a great healer

I tend to agree.  I hope he rests in peace, and respect what he achieved in the game.  But his legacy at Swindon was toxic - so a minute's silence at the County Ground would feel a little out of place to me.

I'm good pals with the younger family generations of Dave's close friend and assistant manager during his time with us, Des Anderson.  Met Dave a few times through this link and he was throughly nice bloke, some cracking stories on him as well.

His time with us was 10 years before my existence on this earth and record was shit, he isn't the 1st first time manager we have had who struggled with management. Think his record in charge of Derby shows he knew what he was doing.

I maybe speaking out of turn but I don't think my old man has ever forgiven him for his tenure, or rather the way he went about things. I maybe wrong but think he was the manager who ousted Stan Harland?! If true, it was never likely to go well. I'm never pleased to read of anyone's passing but like Ardiles, I feel a minutes silence tonight maybe a bit out of place. If the club choose to do one then I will of course join in though.

I moved to Wiltshire in 1973 a few weeks after he had left.  Les Allen had taken over and I was taken aback by the level of vitriol whenever Mackay's name was mentioned.

Someone has mentioned Stan Harland as the reason but I thought his major 'crime' in the fans eyes was selling DR and then buggering off.  The reality was however that town were a club in decline and, loyal club man as he was, Don had probably taken the belatedly pragmatic view that a move made sense.  Mackay got the blame however and the fact that the replacement for a legend was a certain Tommy Jenkins didn't help (anyone remember his mazy going nowhere sideways dribbles?)

I'd be nervous about a minutes silence being respected as it should be for a thoroughly decent man, whatever the truth about his stint here.

As a player he was just one of the many 60s throwback thugs - some ex Spurs pundit on Sky described him as the best all round player ever.

Do me a fucking favour

As a Jambo, I know he is regarded as a hero up in Edinburgh. (well, 50% of it)

George Best said he was his toughest opponent which is some praise.

Clearly it didn't work out here.

Probably never forgave the Don for scoring the winner in the League Cup quarter final in '69 when he was playing for Derby.

Don't know what sort of person he was, but a fucking horrible bastard on the pitch

Correct.  A minute’s silence/applause should be reserved for some one who really has a connection with the Club. They should have achieved something with the Club and you would expect them, normally to have been with the Club for a considerable length of time (although there are exceptions). With the greatest of respect to Dave Mackay and everything he achieved as a player and manager at other clubs, the criteria above clearly do not apply.

For that reason, I am out.

Didn't work out here for reasons already stated but that doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Most people in football will have a blot or two on their career. Was a top player and successful manager. Apparently a very nice fella too.

So just to remind myself, I clicked on his name and read again through all 13 of his uniquely, monotonously bile-fuelled posts. Precisely nothing contributed to this forum.

What exactly does someone have to do to get banned from here?

He's disagreed with some posters and used some colourful language. If that was a banning offence this place would be empty. Get over yourself.

Well maybe, if that's what you want to see on the TEF. But if I wanted that level of debate, I'd spend the day reading YouTube comments. Serious question: if Dexter is on the verge of being banned, then what more does this vein-busting froth-dribbler offer?

I never got the Ignore button, but I think I've finally found a purpose for it.

As the male frog fertilizes the eggs as they're laid by the female frog, a cum filled frog clunge seems unlikely.

Agree with this, although a thread about someone's death does seem to be a somewhat peculiar location to have such an exchange!

It is, but I think the vitreol expressed against Mackay well before the exchange surprised me.

But then I was only 6 when he left the club so have no real STFC based opinion of DM other than he was one of the all time Football League legends.

This is one of the rare occasions when a minute's applause is better than a minute's silence.  If you don't want to applaud, you don't applaud.  And no one minds.

detestible man. Was'nt it Mackay who racked up £500 a week bills at the Blunsdon Hotel?  This was very big money in the day.
He ruined the centre of the team, Stan Harland was mentioned.
I think of Mackay as some on here think of DiCanio.

This.

Agreed, not the most well liked manager we ever had and some of the stories about his behaviour to the players and staff (whether entirely true or not) was a touch of the Bily Big Boots. I know that Blunsdon House Hotel did very well out of his stay.

A true football legend but far from that with us. Saying that, it was a crap period in our history until we got Danny Williams ( who is a true STFC legend ) back to restore some semblance of order and dignity.
I'll applaud the football legend but it certainly won't be for his time with us. Stan Harland ( another true STFC legend ) was very badly treated.

This is how I feel.

I actually saw Stan Harlands grave this week at my wifes aunties funeral here in Yeovil, a little village called Tintinhull on the outskirts of the town just off the A303.

The Don was almost but not quite critical of MacKay, especially over Stan Harland.

From the modest Don - so opposite in character to MacKay - that reticence speaks volumes.

RIP the great Tottenham captain and Scottish international.
