Title: Question for the Steam Heads...
Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Wednesday, February 11, 2015, 19:42:42
I know there's plenty of you out there -

This morning, between 10.00 and 10.30 I was driving down the A12 near Colchester. At one point the road runs parallel to the main Norwich-Liverpool Street line. At this point for about 30 seconds, I was lucky enough to be driving along side a big fuck off steam locomotive with (I guess) 12 carriages, also heading in the London direction.

It was a very, very impressive sight to say the least and made me realise that it was probably the only time I had actually seen a steam loco going full tilt (and it was going like a mother fucker believe me). I went on the Severn Valley railway a few years ago and it was very nice but you don't get to see the train properly at full speed if you are actually on it.

I couldn't believe how much smoke it was kicking out, it's easy to see why London and other major cities had massive problems with smog back in the day.

Anywhoo...my question is....what was it? I would love to know. Would it have been the British Pullman?

Was Mayflower indeed, I believe her first mainline passenger train for c.30 years.

I may have linked to this before so sorry but if you want to see a 'proper' steam engine at speed...

Class B1 4-6-0.....built in Glasgow by North British Loco Company. These were starting to be churned out by the LNER in 1942, and you can see it has something of the lines of an austerity loco....so fitting for the present times.

Apparently, their rolling out coincided with a visit from Jan Smuts....Saffa politico, so they got named after Saffa wildlife etc.

One was called Bongo....so the name attached to the class.....wouldn't do in these politically correct times

O.S. Nock doyen of railway writers, reckoned the B1 gave a rather unsteady ride....not a patch on a Swindon built GWR Hall class  :)

Thanks for the info chaps, interesting stuff. It was a fantastic sight as I say, not to mention slightly surreal.

I was at Grantham station once and out of the blue a steam train came through full pelt. Really impressive. Suddenly remembered this clip of a near miss
