My first game at the County Ground this season. Hopefully play as well as we have in the away games I've seen. Looking forward to a controlled 2-0 win with Willo bagging another and Swift scoring his first for the club

Although we won easily against Chesterfield in October,I remember being impressed with their movement early on and was thankful that Doyle and Clucas didn't have their shooting boots on during the first 15 minutes. That said,I think we'll have too much for them so 3-1 Williams,Toffolo and Smith in front of 8069 with 243 from Derbyshire

I thought the body language of the the PNE players last night after the game was very telling. They looked like a boxer up against the ropes. It is vital for us to push home that advantage today,we are entering Flash's favourite part of the season where every game is a 'must win'.

From Cooperman's comments and from what Gary Roberts has said, it sounds like Chesterfield are going to leave the bus at home today and have a go. Let's hope they do.

I will go with my usual 2-0, a goal a piece from the Generic Duo and a return to the Glory Days for SWS.

Fantastic start to the weekend last night. Preston looked a very average side. I'm not used to watching another promotion chasing side and realising that we're genuinely better than them! Big task ahead today. They've a very potent front two - but their away form is poor (15th in the 'away' league table). I'll go for a 3-1 win, hopefully with 9,000+ in attendance. COME ON YOU REDS!!

can't really judge a team on one or two games, plus the window is open now, it would be brilliant to put 8 points between them and us even if they would have a game in hand.

Feeling of impending doom today for some reason.

I'll be hobbling down to the CG this afternoon so feel free to kick my sticks away

Anyway, 2-2

Preston have signed the past. We've signed up players for the future. Our model will ultimately work.

Pivotal point in the season.  We've had a brilliant run lately: 2½ points/game over the last 10.  If we can just push on from here in the same way, we'll start to open up a gap with the teams in the play off places...which we may need later on.

I think I've just started to believe that we can do this now.

All this "Soccer" anti-US stuff is actually a bit off the mark.
Soccer is an English term, coined from "Association Football", to try and differentiate it from "Rugby Football"

The Yanks have merely taken it on, for similar reasons, to differentiate it from "Grid-iron Football"

Just call me Smiffypedia

I was getting a bit worried about Chesterfield's apparent up turn in form, then realised they've only beaten poor sides in that recent run. We all know we should win this, but going 8 points ahead of Preston sounds a bit good to be true.

I still think we need to bring in another defender. We're looking very thin on numbers at the back. One injury and we could be in a spot of bother.

Title: Re: Swindon Town Fc Vs Chesterfield FC Matchday Thread

Probably not going to be the biggest away following today, they have only sold 150 tickets with a few walk ups I doubt they will bring many more than 240 which is pretty poor for a team in 7th place.

Hopefully the Swindon crowd will pull a few more in being top and 1st home game of 2015 I recon a crowd of 8,715 today.

There are indeed some unusual ones there that you wouldn't expect to be above us like Oldham and Chesterfield.

Oldhams average is infalted due to one away very local game at Rochdale and Chesterfields boosted by anothe rlocal gave vs Doncaster, we would only take 2,500 to away games Bristhole 82ers and Coventry and with Covvy being on Sky on a Monday that scuppered that totally.

Moved a few seats along from my normal area and as a result I am indebted to the startlingly entertaining analysis of the family in row X around 168ish.

The father, who has a mild Scottish accent, appears to have formed a one man Nathan Byrne hate club. Literally every touch he's made including the strong attacking runs have led to criticism of him being a one footed wimp who shies away from contact.

The matriarch has a more varied set of targets from any pass back to the keeper to failing to get the bll forward fast enough. Neither has said anything positive, even about the two goals.

There is hope in the next generation though, one of their kids replied to their mum's moan of 'why not pass it to Swift!' with the unarguable 'because there was a player in the way mummy'.

Good open game, chesterfield look decent but are giving us a chance to play our football. Williams missed a sitter after 45 seconds and we gave them the equaliser after smith tried to pass the ball when clean through!

Chesterfield also hit the bar but we look threatening every time we go forward. Oh and does Audrey have Michael smith's shirt on today? He can't seem to do anything right!!

I think you need look at the reason for the equaliser.  Thompson tried to take on their forward instead of playing back to Wes. He lost it, they switched the ball quickly and their bloke finished well.

This far from over we are giving them plenty of chances and they look good down their left.

more goals to come either end.

We do like to invite trouble.  There's been a few silly passes and faffing on the ball, which cost us the goal and could have punished us further.

All their threat is coming from the left.  Byrne is getting beaten nearly every time.

Smith is clearly struggling for confidence a bit.

A very pleasant game, Chesterfield came to play and our normal effective midfield did not function so well and for long periods in the second half we were just playing on the break!  Don't know what they put in the sponsors tea at half time but to award Byrne man of the match was laughable imo.  Great play between Swift and Willo for the third goal, Swift looks more than handy but I did think our defence looked a bit shakier than normal - however, three points are three points!

So...

First half we looked quite good in large patches, very dangerous going forward. We should have been 1-0 up when from kick off we passed it around for a minute, a ball to the right was headed on to Smith on the right who crossed to Willow, who pushed it wide. That said the ball in was a little overhit.

Great dead ball in for Toffolo for Stephens to head in. And we looked fairly dangerous. The hammer blow came when Smith was played clean in, but for some reason either misscontrolled it or looked to pass, we lost the ball, they broke, Thompson possibly could have cleared but didn't. They scored.

In fact they looked quite good going forward down the left, sharp quick passes opened us up a bit. But we were never in trouble (Crossbar aside), and Swift added a second when he turned his man in the box (was waiting for the ref to blow) and fired home.

After the break Chesterfield came at us, but when the ball broke Swift played in Willow to kill the game 3-1. Credit to the opposition, from that point on they were the better team as they pressed forward. We looked as ragged as we have done for quite some time, the midfield was tiring and Byrne looked like he'd been slipped a sleeping pill he was so far off the pace. But thankfully some good defending and also some desparate last minute blocks/a goal line clearance kept us in it. I wouldn't say the scoreline was unjust, but we'd have been right in the shit had they scored.

MOM for me: Willow probably.

Oh and the ref was laughable. Horrific challenge from behind on Thompson, no foul given, last man brings down Obika and gets a yellow.

Think I'm the only person in red that agreed with the ref on that one. For me Obika's touch has taken in well away and thus it was not a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The one on Thompson looked naughty though.

Credit to chesterfield today, gave us no time or space to play. For all their pressure, they created little to nothing from open play, which was encouraging.

Byrne was poor, Williams and Nathan thompsons immense. Worried about Smith, he looked very poor and his head was down.

Hopefully we can make use of our winter break now, I'd imagine we'd have at least kasim back for the Sheff utd game too

Best game at the CG for a while, Chesterfield came to play and gave us a few sticky moments.
We looked stretched at times when they attacked and rode our luck.
Happy with that win, thought Smith off the pace a bit today but overall decent team performance.
Ref was utter shite, bottled an awful challenge from behind on Thompson not even blowing for a foul when a red wouldn't have been out of place.
And pretty sure last man fouling a player thru on goal is a red too as in Obikas.
Pulling and niggly fouls all over the pitch went unnoticed.

Well taken goals tho, Swift esp did well to battle for the ball for his and Williams was a classic breakaway goal with a great finish.

Pity franchise and the 82ers won but all we can do is keep our wins coming
82ers having all the luck

I thought the pattern of the game was similar in many ways to Coventry. Take a commanding lead then when the other team comes at us we closed the game down

Super finish from Williams for the third, could've and should've had more. Credit to Chesterfield as they try to play football and came to attack. Didn't think it was a red card although the tackle on Thompson was nasty - good to see little brother Thompson get a bit of revenge straight after. Thought their crossbar shot may have been in but no one appealed too hard. Roberts also look good so glad when he went off.

What a strange game.

Very enjoyable first half where Williams should have scored inside 30 secs and we continued to get in behind them almost at will and should really have had 3 or 4.

Chesterfield's defence was dire first 45 but looked tasty going forward.

2nd half they dominated us for the majority of it, had one off the line and quite a few great balls in. They really should have done better in the area.

How there can be any doubt that Williams was MoM, I dont know. Scored one and chased and harried for 90 minutes - terrific exhibition of a hard working striker.

Any club looking at spunking money on Doyle need their heads testing. Whingy little cunt.

Im afraid I lost it today.  Id turned to my kid and said at half time that the ref had been decent.  Then that Jones jumped in and scissor tackled Nathan and not only no red card but not even a fucking foul.  Disgraceful decision and disgraceful behaviour from the cheating little cunt.

That was right in front of me so I could get really incensed.  I was less incensed but utterly baffled as to why there player who cynically fouled Obika when he was last man only got a yellow.

After a thoroughly enjoyable first half where we played very well in patches, we came out in the second half, scored a good third and then seemed to take the foot off the gas and let Chesterfield have lots of possession without actually creating anything too clear cut. (Although Wes again tried to give them something with a stupid attempted pass which was intercepted)

I thought Williams was probably my MOM, and his work rate was phenomenal. I thought Stephens had a good first half too. Toffolo can't half whip a cracking delivery in!

Chesterfield are a decent side and I liked their scorer Clucas, and I also thought Roberts looked dangerous before he went off injured.

Happy enough with the 3 points and a couple of weeks for the players to recover now before Sheffield United away.

Hardly surprising City won.

First half Scunny lost their keeper with a broken arm, then later in the first half their replacement keeper broke his arm as well!

What's the chances

I don't suppose the Shithead players had anything to do with it....probably both just randomly snapped due to poor norvern diet.

Agree with you.
Willo ran his bollocks off. My mom.
Feel for Smiffy but at least fans are not getting on his back. Looks a little short of confidence but it will come. Still works hard just not running for him.
Was impressed with Chesterfield at their place. A few decent teams will come unstuck playing them.
Refreshing to come down and have a go. If they would have scored with 15 mins to go would have been a real test.
Biggest disappointment a crap crowd. Top of the league and 7,000. Pathetic.

7,981 is all but 8000. It's not great, but only 400 away supporters. We were told earlier that the budget is for 7500 on average, so at least we're above that.

Smith's general malaise may have had something to do with the fact he was getting brutalised every time he went up for a header, generally without any sympathy from the ref

The Washbag's stats the other day on combined goals and assists show quite how important Michael Smith is to our game. So much more to his all round game than either Williams or Obika.

A game of fine margins. He was inches away from an absolute cracker of a volley on Monday and bar a poor finish from Williams, a great assist today. He is an all rounder and essential to the way we play. A bit dry on goals at the moment, but will be import at to us in the run in.

A good result today. The first half was a credit to this division with some very good football played by both sides. I cannot believe there is a better crosser of the ball in this division. If we could sign him up then we should. The second, half, however, Chesterfield shat on us but we were very resolute. MOM will Willow. Byrne was crap and looks nowhere near fit. His second half performances are very poor. I feel sorry for Smith but hopefully he shanks one in and its game on with him again. Nate Dog had a good game despite fucking up for their goal.
All in all another win and 3 points in the bag. If Chesterfield had a defence we may have had issues and I still worry about our right hand side defensively.

As entertaining as first half as seen all season at home.  Both teams looked like they could score (and concede) a hatfull.

Chesterfield gave us the runaround in the second half and we looked very ragged and very tired.  First time we've really missed Louongo and Kasim.  Williams goal was key in giving us a cushion.

I like Smith but his confidence is shot to pieces.  Looked glad to be taken off.  Desperately needs a goal.

MOM was their left back by a country mile.

Ref was bizarre, a two footed airborne tackle apparently isn't even a foul....

Winning when outplayed is always said to be the sign of a successful team, so a great result.

Glad we have next week off.

I don't think the ref saw the table properly. first thing he did was look straight at the linesman.

to be honest I'm not sure how bad it was either, the reaction of those closer suggested it was a bad one. I am sure it was a foul though.

Should have been watching the game not the fucking table!!  It was a clear foul, some refs would have given a red, others a yellow, with the plonker we had today it would definitely have been a yellow!

I thought that was a professional performance.  First 45-50 mins nice and open, looked like getting 4 or 5.  Closed the game out, which lead to a scrappy last 40 mins for the viewing public but never really meant we were under real pressure, just allowed possession.  You could say that against a better team it could cost us, but the reality seems to be that there just aren't many better teams!

I know Cooper wasn't pleased with the 2nd half, and I'd hope they get told that to ensure they don't start the next game off the boil.  However, I think if we didn't have the 2 goal cushion we had a bit in the tank if needed (we still created a couple of really decent efforts when they struggled to hit the target bar the one cleared off the line).

I actually think our style is better suited to the league above.  I don't doubt some additions would be needed, but the gems are out there, they just need a system and set-up to bring them through.  Our gems work because we play a style of football they are used to from the Academy system in the Premier League.  Look at Swift, slotted straight in.  Mason last year, looked classy but we really expect him to be critical to Spurs this term on so many occasions?

I'm not expecting us to walk this league and settle in easily at Championship level, but I think the approach we have gone for is almost the absolute best approach for a club of our size.

The challenge on Nate Dog was a fucking outrageous one and the referee should be picking up litter for the next 20 years as punishment. I didn't think I'd see a worse decision than Turnbull's challenge for the penalty for Doncaster but that fuckwit yesterday managed it. Their no 3 should be totally ashamed of what he did.

Barnsley at home, Scunny away. Not the hardest but equally, far from a guaranteed 6 points. I see they are at home to FC82 or whatever it is we're calling them these days, on the 7th February.

The top 4 all still have to play each other so I'm sure there are lots more twists and turns to come. I know that sounds really cliche-ish but more often than not, cliches are actually correct.

It's only a couple of years since there was a lengthy thread regarding us been ripped off at Hillsboro. How can Swindon be allowed to charge what they do. 25 quid to sit in the far top corner of the stand with Saltergateesque facilities. The outcome of the Hillsboro debate was that facilities in the away end where better than in the home end, which justified the extra charge. Yeh ok. The facilities at Swindon, basic would be an exaggeration, nice pillar to help in flexing the neck muscles to peer around though.

How can a club so much in debt (was there recent threats of ground closure) with such a high player budget be allowed to buy promotion at the expense of other clubs fans. It ain't rate.

From chesterfield forum. Not sure your 407 fans will buy us promotion tbh fella. High player budget made me laugh as well

I think this poster on evidence was thick.

Exhibit a:
Quote

The facilities aren't best, I think we agree. I think 400 fans from Chesterfield is a good turn out really. But in a stand that holds 1000 odd, why would you not pick a seat with a better view. There were 600 spaces to choose from.

If not thick then very ill informed:
Quote

I'm not actually sure how much debt we have now, not sure how they got an exclusive. Even so the budget is pretty small, they may even have a bigger budget than us..

That pillar does get in the way no matter where you sit, but it's not really a massive view restriction.

Lots of our own fans have bashed the facilities in the Arkells. Apart from the corporate side of things and not being shiny and new, what's it missing?

Compared to some away stands at our level it's actually pretty decent. The Town End is worse ffs!

I just had a look at prices for our game at Oldham for example and away seating is £22.00 so I don't see that it's that big of a deal and hardly worthy of comment.

That pillar does get in the way no matter where you sit, but it's not really a massive view restriction.

The front block... Unless they were jobsworthed out of being able to sit there.

Franchise have 2 league games before we play again - look piss easy ones, too.

But they have to win them..  they should have beaten Crawley.

Not having a game for a fortnight doesn't help...we've got momentum, but now are forced to just sit back and watch....so batten down the hatches and see if we can get through the rest of Jan intact.

Just the one game left in Jan, but Mass/Kas will probably need a bit of time off when the Asia Cup finishes.

Cant really believe how quiet it is on the transfer front. Doesn't bode well!

We may have Yaser back if Iraq lose to Palestine tomorrow. Australia play their QF on Thursday.

No news is good news as far as outgoing transfers are concerned!

I'd image we'll take at least 1500 to Sheffield, or is that rather optimistic? Big ground and no game for a while. I need to research whether its better shopping in the city centre or Meadowhall for the missus!

Wet Spam got 1100 tickets for their FA cup tie which is supposed to be 15% of capacity ( currently around 13k while have a stand missing )
Don't think they have been giving anywhere near that for league

First chance to post since Saturday - excellent 3 points again and good to see when scored when it mattered. I like the look of Swift and looks like he's settled in well. Nice to see a side come and have a go at us, so fair play to Chesterfield. A bit disappointed only 7900odd in attendance - surely we can do better than that being top of the league?!

Looking forward to Sheffield United in a couple of weeks, first visit and up on the train - they have a tough period, so hopefully we can take advantage of that come 31st Jan!

The interesting thing with Swift is that he plays, or at least he did on Saturday, further forward than any of our other midfielders. He was really hanging off the front two in a way that Luongo doesn't - he sits deeper.

If we manage to keep Luongo and Kasim, and everybody stays fit, what is the consensus for the middle 3 with Louis T, Gladwin, Luongo, Swift and Kasim to choose from? I cannot make my mind up. It's fantastic to have such competition for places and it could really be a case of choosing the right combination depending on the opposition.

I would imagine Swift will do better when the opposition play a 4 and there is space to move into between the lines, Louis is important for games where the opposition will try and keep the ball more than others.... Luongo, I think, is an automatic choice.

In an idle moment, this potential conundrum came to my mind, but I dismissed it on the grounds that it will likely be solved by a sale, most likely Luongo.

Whilst it would be very nice to enter into the home straight with a full complement of midfielders, and I'd throw Anton Rodgers in here, to make it 6 to pick from, it does show we could lose prob Mass, gain some lucre, and still be at least competitive.

Hopefully, we'll have the full complement as 27 games will have been played out over the preceding 5.5 months, leaving 19 to be played in 3 months.....a packed program.

By my calculation we'll have 7 mid week matches...so presumably 12 Saturday games...so although there'll be a few free weeks, having plenty of bodies would be a major help.

I've only seen a handful of games fully this season (and all post Christmas), but I think Louis T is an automatic choice for me at the moment. His work rate is incredible and he has a good range of qualities to his game. He demonstrated this particularly well against Coventry.

The original point was what it might look like after Asian Cup....hence we lose a Sat at Bramall Lane ....you've also failed to factor in the likely loss of Walsall game to JPT final.....I'm kind of giving the Good Friday fixture a Saturday status.
