Title: Aussie Construction Company
Post by: Saxondale on Wednesday, December 17, 2014, 08:31:17
http://www.swindonlinksport.com/2014/12/17/power-discusses-meeting-with-large-construction-company-in-australia/

Seems it wasnt just a holiday.  I do feel I have to pull Sam up on the use of 'tarting up'.  Not the best writing there.

All seems quite positive though.

Duly noted. And changed. Story was put together quite late yesterday after a long day and obviously my brain couldn't come up with a more suitable phrase.

Getting a six-figure fee in January for effectively nothing (kind of a sweetener on any future plans) sounds like this company are very keen to do something with us.

Dare I say this sounds very positive - no more Imagine Cruising on our shirts would appeal to me!

St Modwen Mark 2?

Very much don't like the look of this last line....

Quote
“It’s an old stadium, it’s a tired stadium, there are discussions that need to be had regarding the dilapidations because they would run into the millions of pounds to get the stadium up to where it needs to be.

....no doubt SBC's response, will be to close down the Bank and possibly the TE.

Its not really anything we don't know though (Powers quote not Sam's article). The Bank and Town End won't go on forever but I can't see the Council shutting them down anytime soon. They've been "battered" for as long as I can remember.

It's nice to see that LP is at least listening to what they have to say. Previously, he's refused any speculation re. The ground I think.

You're far too trusting of SBC.....of course their bumbling incompetence in some ways helps us out, but Power's interest in the ground, has probably been activated by the conundrum of a possible Championship side playing in a 2 sided arena....and not in a Sporting Braga sort of way.

I wonder who the firm in question is? I reckon Leightons.

I'm sure you're correct to an extent re. Powers motives. It's not about any element of trust though, I'm not sure on what grounds they could shut the Townend?! The Bank maybe different but then it probably just needs some money spent on the bogs. As long as they're "safe" then I can't see how the council can close them.

It's the first thing I thought too. Perhaps some naming rights going there way to?

I liked Power's words about the fact the CG is falling apart. It's not about a shiny, aesthetically pleasing stadium oh with some extra businesses thrown in. It's now about redeveloping as a matter of necessity.

Maybe it's naming rights or it could be a first move in trying to start a long-lasting relationship? Maybe they've been looking for an 'in' into the Stadium construction industry and this is theirs? I have no idea about the construction industry and this happens but I'm looking at it from a web developers POV :P. That's what we do early on.

Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Wednesday, December 17, 2014, 10:07:51
The likely scenario is that we agree a deal for them to sponsor the CG in the long term.

The key question is why are they keen and what would they get out of it? As with any redevelopment idea I'll believe it when I see it.

Anyone who's ever spent any time 'backstage' at the CG can tell it has issues that need sorting.

It's just getting very long in the tooth and it's about time something was done.

I think naming rights is a given. One does have to wonder what they will get long term out of it but if they do indeed develop the CG then I am all for it.

Although we have been told this since time immemorial from every previous board we have had.

But Powers track record to date and the fact he is having meetings with preliminary deals in place makes me think this could be the day...

I reckon it is Westfield and they are going to knock down the CG and build a whopping shopping centre in it's place forcing us to groundshare with supermarine as Mr Power rides off into the sunset with a pocket full of cash.

Another update here: http://www.swindonlinksport.com/2014/12/17/exclusive-county-ground-naming-rights-unlikely-to-go-to-new-australian-sponsor/

Naming rights probably isn't it.

Also, has anyone else noticed that Sam has been posting stories from Lee Power with new quotes and Andy and FLIC has been tweeting about how he has been struggling to get in touch with Mr Power for a week? Odd.

It worries me more because it reads like possibly getting the excuses in early as to why it's just not possible to redevelop the CG so we'll have to move to an out of town flat pack instead.

In the Town End? a few years, probably 3+.....why? does that make me less of a fan? yes I guess it does, I live 90+ miles away and rarely get to games these days due to financial restraints.

It was a question because I pay no attention to who sponsors each stand as they change all the time and are largely irrelevant for most fans.

thats why i dont understand a lot of fans aggression at stadium naming, especially in the lower leagues where money is tighter and more important. if we could get shit loads of cash for naming rights and it keeps the club in the right direction go for it. it will always be the county ground to the fans.

I think Dave Best, Bormuff goalkeeper. You can't know everything, which is why you need a team in a quiz.

In answer to Sutton, Dave played his last game 40 years ago, on returning to Bormuff after spells at Ipswich, Pompey and Oldham....so probably not.

He did....a 1 in 2 man for Sarfend, over 200 odd games, less prolific for Cobblers.

Clyde Best at West Ham....he was a big old boy, who scored a few....Bermudan, like The Goat.
