Title: dashboard camera
Post by: Arriba on Saturday, December 13, 2014, 16:55:11
The time has come to get one fed up with all the shit on the roads and it's my living so need to cover myself too.

I know sippo has one so I'd like to know which one to buy. Obviously I want it as cheap as possible but it has to do the job as well. Fire away with any recommendations.
It will be used in different vehicles and 24 voltage as well as 12 would be advantageous.

Ha ha.

Take a look here. http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/265346-in-car-cameras/

I have a blackvue which I have wired down the A pillar. Expensive but worth it. Möbius is a good cheap one but some people have had issues with it over heating. The thread above will help.

PS. I know some insurance companies over a discount if they have an onboard dash cam.

This is the one I got.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/E-PRANCE-Novatek-Dashcamera-Recorder-G-sensor-Black/dp/B00IPDDAME/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1418491455&sr=8-9&keywords=dash+cam

Footage is great quality, obviously lacks features like GPS and speedo, but it's a cam and it records. It records in 3 minute files (which can be changed) and deletes the oldest files as it goes. I have a 16GB card in mine and I think that's several hours of footage. It also senses impacts and then locks the file to prevent it being recorded over.

It's nothing special, but it provides me with that little extra peace of mind. The instructions are a bit shit, but it's not the hardest thing in the world to suss out alone as the settings list isn't that big.

EDIT: Apparently there's lots of fakes kicking around so make sure it's a "Sold by EPRANCE and Fulfilled by Amazon" cam. Fuck knows why people would be faking a cheap plasticky camera that's presumably Chinese.

Thanks gents.
I looked at those eprance ones earlier today and they did appeal due to reviews and cost. Doesn't have to be fancy just show what's going on in front of me with some decent width to it.

What's happened to make you want to get one? Have you got plenty of tinned food in as well?

I think I'll get one too when I get a new motor.

Having had an accident last week where the other guy was at fault but is not admitting liability, video footage would've proved invaluable.

Surely people need 2? One facing forward, the other back?

What a cunt. Is he claiming your car teleported to his side of the road and back again?

I used to think that dashcams were for the paranoid self righteous. But I've changed my mind, it seems everyone is on the scam and this is a way to try and protect yourself. This is much worse.

I don't know what he's claiming yet, all I know is that he hasn't admitted he was at fault. I know insurers tell you not to admit liability at the scene, but I can't see how he can try and absolve himself. I hope to find out what he's told his insurance company this week.

Title: Re: dashboard camera
Post by: Samdy Gray on Sunday, December 14, 2014, 15:25:49
Unfortunately not. My word against his.

I took plenty of photos of the scene, so hopefully common sense will prevail. Although I'm fully aware that insurance firms don't live in the land of common sense.

My insurers have settled already for my write-off so it's no real biggie, just would be nice not to lose the NCB.

Is there an unusually high number of phsychopathic maniacs roaming the highways and bye-ways of North Wiltshire?

If some one wants to get one of these cameras then knock yourself out - It's fine by me. I just think that if I got one, I would end up with hours and hours and hours of dull, mundane footage.

It all seems a bit...*

No more than usual
In general i think driving standards have gone down the pan steadily over recent years

Add in the ridiculous amount of roadworks around the town lately and ppl will take any risk it seems to save 30 seconds of their trip

I think that's the idea. You don't want eventful footage to come home and watch it, you just have it so that when you have a smash, you've hopefully got some proof.

Although when I first got it I did drive like an absolute fucking loon one afternoon just so I could watch it when I got home. It wasn't town driving, it was across an hour and a half of country roads. That footage was fun.

Fingers crossed. Can't see how it could possibly be seen as your fault but as you say, insurance companies...

No, you got stick because you posted loads of tedious footage of not very much and got all "Oooh, look at that maniac, it's an outrage that's what it is" about it.
Now you are all at it!
Well 2 or 3 people, maybe

I think that's the idea. You don't want eventful footage to come home and watch it
Or some want mundane footage to come home and watch it and then share with everyone else (see above) :)

This is exactly why I'm buying one. I'd be delighted to never have to watch footage from it. Unfortunately I think that is unlikely.
The rapid decline in driving standards and the increase in traffic has prompted my purchase, coupled with arseholes cutting me up every day of the week.

Once my mortgage is paid I won't be driving for a living. Will probably give up driving a car too.

Fair enough. If you actually are driving for a living and are literally getting cut up every day because you are driving some big ass truck and people are too stupid to realise that actually, you need a lot more room to manoeuvre than a regular car, then I can understand it.

For regular, private drivers I frankly find it quite odd. If you are getting into close scrapes on that regular a basis, maybe you should actually look at your own driving technique. Maybe it is you who are driving too fast/not leaving enough room/driving too agressively in general.

I've been driving for 28 years now (scary when you put it like that). If, hypothetically, I'd had a camera in all the cars I had driven I would have (just making a number up here for argument's sake) 10,000 miles of film, about 6 inches of which may be worth watching.

To go to that effort and spend what I would assume is quite a bit of cash/time/effort on something which you're almost certainly never going to use (or at least shouldn't ever have to use)is...well...how can I put this...

All very valid points, but we live in an increasingly litigious society and from recent personal experience I now know that a one-off cost of £30 would be more than worth it for the peace of mind that my NCB and excess are safe even if I don't have another accident ever again.

Driving abroad on holiday so thinking about one of these.

What is everyone's view of what they bought ?? Good value or wouldn't bother ??

The Mobius is great. It records in 1080p and the wide-angled lens captures a lot of the road. It records sound too.

I've got it hardwired so that it automatically switches on and off with the ignition. The cables are all tucked neatly away behind the roof liner/door trims etc. and it's all fully removable when I have to give the car back.

It's tiny as well, so you can mount it somewhere really discreet. I've got mine stuck to the underside of the rain sensor and it's hardly noticeable from outside the car.

Cheers Sam, so you went for the wide angled lens - is that the 131% one ? Does is make the picture a bit fish eye ?

How much does it record and keep ? What size mem card did you go for ??

Sorry for the interrogation but I've been looking quite keenly at the Mobius  ;D

How much Sam? Ebay...as you know I'm a 'fancy title' sales rep and fancy getting one.

Mate of mine got pranged in a contra flow and the youngin stopped, got out and then fucked off. Took his plate and plod couldn't do anything as he just denied it.

I just got the one with the standard lens. That's wide enough.

I put a 16GB card in it which captures around 2 hours which is more than enough. I've set it to record in 5 minute loops, so if there's anything you want to keep you press a button on the camera and it marks that file as read-only. The rest just get overwritten as the card fills up.

I bought a piggy back fuse: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Piggy-Back-Mini-Blade-Fuse-Holder-with-3-Fuses-12V-15A-Fuse-Tap-ATM-Add-Circuit-/221821546646?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item33a5983096

And one of these USB cables: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3Meter-DC-12V-24V-to-5V-3A-Left-Angled-90-Degree-Mini-USB-Power-Converter-Cable-/130978718214?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1e7ef0a206

No splicing of cables needed, so all fully removeable. And only took 10 minutes to fit.

Which ever you go for make sure it has gps.

I have a blackvue, and is excellent. It is expensive though. The mobius is good. I know some people have had issues with them over heating, yet some haven't.

Hardwired is definitely the way to go. Mine is fused with the rear wiper.

Happy to help install if anyone needs it.

Not sure if this is a good price but it seemed it to me, free 8gb card and 720p recording for under £17.
