Title: Notts County vs Swindon Town Match Day Thread.

It does exactly what it says on the tin.

No idea what defence we'll have out today and we'll have to contend with a poor pitch and a physical opposition so would be happy with a point. 2-2 draw Kasim and Smith

I hate fisherman's pie.
I hate fish.
Except for cod in batter and fish fingers.

2-1 loss.

It has only just dawned on me, seriously, that Notts County is basically named after the county of Nottinghamshire.  As in Nottinghamshire County FC.  I think I always thought the 'Notts' was short for Nottingham.

My theory breaks down when you get to Stockport and Derby though.

I've just spotted that there are extended highlights (6 mins) of the only game I've seen at Meadow Lane - the 3-1 win in Oct 1995 under McMahon.

I have a bad feeling in my piss about this one. 2-0 defeat but then a good run over X Mas / New Year. Only been there once a midweek 2-1 win under Macari where Calderwood scored a cracker running from the half way line.

I've just watched it.  Both Shaun Taylor goals are Taylor classics.  The kids should have a watch.  We've never had a better header of the ball.

I think I always thought the 'Notts' was short for Nottingham.

But surely you know that writing Notts Forest angers their fans and summons DV to appear in order to correct you.

The corollary being that Nottm County would be equally wrong.

Didn't realise fans used to sit behind the goal. Don't like sitting to the side at away games.

I've never seen us win in Nottingham.  Hoping for a win, but will take a draw.

Was in Nottingham last week for the War of the Worlds, horrible place to drive through so I'm getting a train, parking will be a nightmare this close to Christmas

Where's Shaw Rosso? I miss his match day opener.

Probably thinks he deserves to start every game.

Display this afternoon without him, I hope, will demonstrate why he isn't starting every week.  He's a great player, and a strong member of a strong squad.  But I do wonder whether he has an exaggerated sense of his self worth.  He needs to think carefully.  Could be a wrong turn he's making here.

Fully agree. The club picked him up from non-league with a view to the future. He started a few games about this time last year, with performances up and down, with Cooper admitting at the time it was a bit early for him.

This season, he's mostly been out with injury, and cannot get in a side that are second in the league. He would be better biding his time and once he gets in the side, make sure he cannot be left out.

But for all we know he was offered less money than he's on now.

But if its as it seems then yes, he has over estimated his own worth. He's an average defender with potential. It will be a shame to lose him. But I won't lose sleep over it, particularly if he's been tapper up/playing games.

County down to ten men. I think. I'm confused now.

McLoughlin hasn't got a clue what's going on, it's quite entertaining.

Confused, straight red, but County gets free kick...?

Must have been a foul before the dangerous play. Or the ref is a cock, but as he's just send off a County player he can't be!

Yeah, our comms are confused but it's pretty simple, first foul is a free kick to County, no card. Then reaction gets county guy a red, it's pretty simple really.

Interview with Cooper for anyone who missed it

- We played particularly well
- The game looked like it would get out of control but we kept our discipline
- Wes' distribution is second to none and part of how we attack
- Gladwin has fantastic ability. Still not sure of his best position but he can play LWB. The more minutes he plays the more comfortable he will feel.
- Confused by the red card and County getting a free kick - will need to see it again. Glad we stayed disciplined and didn't react emotionally.
- Very pleased with the strikers, they all had an effect on the game today
- Branco won't feature until the situation is resolved.
- We haven't exceeded expectations, everyone knows we're capable of that. Impressed and happy with our discipline.

Most enjoyable display and no sign of the dreaded manager of the month curse.

The first time I've seen us win in Nottingham and one of the best performances from start to finish, yes we've played well, but this was sustained throughout, terrific!

Notts were poor, I was expecting a bit more from them and although Carrol kept the score down, what an utter twat he is, constantly whining to the ref (who did OK) and got a deserved yellow.

Missed the incident for the red card as I was still texting our 2nd goal so can't comment.

I was a bit concerned about LWB today, I needn't have worried, Ben Gladwin was immense, in fact we were more dangerous down the left today, agree with DoB my MoM.
Great day out today

Just got back home.  Train travel was a real pain today with cancellations, delays and missed connections but the Town's performance made it worthwhile.  Agree with the previous posters about the performance.  With better finishing, we would have been out of sight at half time.  A bit too much showboating/sloppiness after we went to 3-0 or it could have been a much bigger score.

No one has mentioned the Stephens incident towards the end of the first half which could have been a red card.  I saw their man go down but didn't see what, if anything, Stephens did.  Some people said he hit their man in the back of the head and deserved to go.  Some said he did nothing.  The County sending off in the second half was quite straightforward, though.  The guy just retaliated to Nathan's foul right in front of the Ref, then seemed to acknowledge what he had done and just walked off without complaining.

Oh, and Carroll is a cock.

No one has mentioned the Stephens incident towards the end of the first half which could have been a red card.

I never saw it to be fair, I looked at the ref & Linesman immediately & if anything happened they missed it too. Apparently Carrol did though, ran half the length of the pitch to go on and on and on.... until he was booked, he still carried on after that with the lino, utter cock!

Fantastic result. A win would have been terrific but to win in the manner we did is superb. Hope Branco comes to his senses and realises what he's got here. Although he's very raw he does have a lot of potential and at this stage of his career Swindon is probably the best place for him to demonstrate that.

Great win. I'm usually pessimistic about Town but think it's currently between us and MK Dona for the title.  Overall both Franchise abd Swindon have the best attacks in the league and seem to be blowing teams apart away from home.

My mind may change come the end of the January transfer window (ie if Bristol City or Preston) spend big. Otherwise I can see Bristol City slipping up away from home against teams like Crewe where they dominate the game but only have one good striker who can score on a regular basis. At least with us it feels as if one of Obika, Smith or Williams will score in every game.

Great to see comments like this on opposition forums

No seriously though, I think today is one of them days where you have to just hold your hands up and admit we were beaten by a much better side than us. Their players are all proven at both this level and above. They are a championship side, and on what I saw today could overhaul Bristol City and win this league. They've beaten the top sides in this league and we saw why today. The way they kept the ball, moved it around, but also did the nasty stuff so well - you couldn't help but admire it really. Usually at this level sides can either be physical or play nice football, but Swindon do both very well. Good luck to them, they're a top side.

Yeah possibly. It was more the bit about us doing the nasty things well that I was proud of. Thought we were bullied at times a little last year. This year; good luck with that!

Having a little read (as I always do after matches) of the opponents forum and I have to say their fans are in the main very impressed with us, only a few moaning about the ref sending their player off etc, so here is a breif concatination of comments...

Quote
Swindon were the best team I've seen this season, they played superb football and carved us open at times. Saying that I thought we started well despite gifting them a goal, and did exactly the same at the start of the second.

We were chasing shadows today, we made them look like the 1970 Brazil team.

Totally outplayed. Sharp passing and good movement cut us to shreds something it seems is alien to the SD style of play.
Swindon play quality football in the right areas of the field and they have players who know where the goals are.

We were run ragged by a far sharper, more mobile and cultured side today. Different class altogether, thought Kasim & Obika were outstanding for them & Gladwin was quality too.

Beaten by a better team today, albeit a farcical referee display. Swindon are a good team built over a couple of years with a very distinct style and they cut us to bits.

The excuse for pessimism on here always seems to be 'I'm a realist' but if you're a realist, you'd realise we've got a solid mid-table squad that are overachieving a bit and will come unstuck against a superb team like Swindon.

Swindon reminded me of when Southampton got promoted from L1. Physically tall and strong with the ability to pass through teams.

Sorry, can't blame the ref for this one. We've been completely outclassed from the start.

Swindon outplayed us, without question. But any chance we had was taken away by the inept officials, letting the Swindon players get away with cynical tackles off the ball and punishing our players at every single opportunity, it was no wonder the hotheads in the team lost the plot under those circumstances.

Swindon were just better than us in every department today...they played passing football..attacked in numbers...made no defensive errors unlike some of our lads..moved off the ball...ran into channels..we huffed and puffed but quality will always shine through and in the end it turned out to be like a training session for Swindon.

See the Shitheads have another thread on us.

Their logic behind us dropping off the pace is that as we've won 5 in a row we are therefore due a dip.

That and our loan players will return to their parent clubs, they will buy Smith and Obika and Fods is pissed off and wants to leave.

Oh, and are better players are only on £700 a week and we cant afford to keep them.

Fucking glad we have them to let us know what is going on at our club!

One of them said that they should buy Obika from his parent club to screw us over, completely ignorant of the fact that we ARE his parent Club.

It's also quite amusing to see that one of their lot is having ago at the FLS coverage, saying they had given far too much coverage to us and ignored them. I wouldn't say that I care, but I am most definitely interested in getting their perspective, no matter how warped it may be. I've said it before, one of the most fascinating things about t'interweb for me is having a look to see what other Clubs' fans think of us.

I'm not interested specifically because they are Bristol City but because, right now, they are our main rivals. Back in our 'Danny Wilson Wembley Debacle' season it was Leeds and I got hours of entertainment watching WACCOE go into melt down at fairly regular intervals.

"Some of Swindon's attacking play in the first half was the best I've ever seen at this level, the control, pass and move was wonderful to watch." Good to know Notts fans enjoyed yesterday as much as the Town fans there did.

We were awesome should have been at least 5.

Their number 16 was always going to do something stupid and get sent off and just because Roy Carroll played for Man U a few times what gives him the right to charge out of his goal at every opportunity to argue with every decision made by the linesman or referee. if dissent is a bookable offence he should have had at least 4 yellow cards.

Imitation is a sincere form of envy.

On the subject of reading other forums, I was quite curious to discover how the Pox managed 6,900 at the Kassam on Saturday v Bury.

Apparently they gave away 2,000 tickets to school kids and invited their 3,000 season ticket holders to bring a friend for free...not surprisingly the season ticket holders had few friends to muster.

This promotion didn't sound nearly as well thought out as the Trust's promotion even if a minor bump was achieved with the give-away

As ever, always in our shadow.

Great to see the Notts County fans singing our praise on Facebook.  Fair play to them.

Sharing the love:
Quote from: HumblePies
- Swindon were better than us, it happens!
- It was great watch a side play like Swindon did yesterday.
- Going forward they are all decent players but that isn't good enough against a quality team like Swindon.
- Swindon were in a different class
- all these so called experts about what the manager did wrong etc point is we where outplayed end of nothing you can do about that just have to take it on the chin
- I'm not blaming the players. No shame in being beaten by a better side.
- I don't think we played terrible today at all- we were outclassed by a slick side and a weird ref
- Notts were outplayed today by a very good side and the score could have been embarassing if not for a string of saves by Roy Caroll. We did have a few good chances but couldn't take them and Swindon played some lovely one-touch football in simple triangles that would cut through most defences. Well played to Swindon but lets move on to the next game.
- Outplayed and out classed. Judging on the media team, not hard to see why Swindon are challenging.
- Make no mistake Swindon are a very good side.
- over all notts played okay but swindon had pace on us they a better side than bristol city can see why there second
- Best side I've seen this season. Automatic promotion for you I think.
- We were outclassed. Although there was some very bizarre referring! Man of the match? Any Swindon player,
- they are the best team I've seen this season they passed the ball around superbly wd were beaten by a better side today and I have no complaints
- Can't believe people are blaming the officials for our defeat. Some poor decisions yes but we were beaten by a much better team. A tremendous display of League One football from Swindon. Every single player in their team, including the keeper and back four were so comfortable in possession of the ball and they passed us into submission. Swindon had quality throughout the team that we just don't have and only some great saves from Carroll kept the score down.
- Swindon are the best side that I have seen so far this season, and, in fact, the past few seasons. So whoever finishes above them will be promoted.
- don't blame officials give respect to swindon quality team outplayed us they were class that was the reason we ain't up to there level credit to swindon town

Oh, and these made me smile:
Quote from: MadPies
- Was I at a different game? We were the better side for large chunks and the game was once again spoiled by appalling officials.
- The club needs major investment to get out of this league, you carn't do it with half a team of loan players.
