I did wonder if 3 is Bela Lugosi....I thought Dracula as well, based on 1 dodgy guess, so not really convincing, but sure it's right.

How the fuck did you come up with that ? If the spider meets the minute hand for the second time 20 minutes after the first meeting, that means it meets the first time after 15.75 seconds ?

That's how I got that. I don't think the likeness is particularly good personally!

Agree!  The LVG one looks more like 'Arry Redknapp.

Spider starts at the hour hand (6), halfway around the clock (or 30 seconds). The clock has to be 3 seconds a minute quicker than the spider to catch up in 20 minutes (3 x 20 = 1 complete minute). The gap between the clock and spider is 1.5 seconds over 30 seconds, so the clock is 15.75 seconds to the spiders 14.25 seconds (therefore they first meet at 15.75 seconds after six (based on time), simply add 20 minutes.

Read the question again. The spider travels anti-clockwise first, then turns round. And we're talking about the minute hand, not the second hand.

My calculations are correct based on the second hand (anticlockwise first), but yes I have misread it.

18. If they meet for the 2nd time 20 minutes after the first meeting and they are now travelling in the same direction, it means the spider needs to travel 80 minutes (ie go all the way round the clock before catching up the minute hand) while the minute hand travels 20 minutes. So it is travelling at 4 times the speed of the minute hand. Therefore the first meeting is at 18:06 (spider travels 24, minute hand 6), then the 2nd meeting is 18:26 (spider goes all the way around, travelling 80 while the minute hand travles 20)

Maths:  First, we set up the equation for the time (t) that the spider meets the minute hand the first time. The minute hand moves at 6 degrees per minute, and the spider moves at x degrees per minute. Since the spider starts at the 6 or at 180 degrees away from the minute hand,

6(t) = 180 - x(t)

Now if we say that the spider and minute hand are at the same spot, and start moving in the same direction, and the spider laps the minute hand (360 degrees plus the distance traveled by the minute hand, or 360 + 6(20) or 480 total degrees) then the distance traveled by the spider in 20 minutes must be 480 degrees. The spider, therefore, travels 24 degrees per minute.

Plug 24 degrees per minute into the equation for x, and solve:

6(t) = 180 -24(t)
6(t) + 24(t) = 180
30(t) = 180
t = 6

So the first meeting is at 6 minutes after 6, or 6:06. 20 minutes later at the second meeting is 6:26.
