Title: Chesterfield v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, 02:19:18
Just got home from a late A & E visit, just the 5 hour wait  :suicide:

Matchday Thread fail means we will win 4-1, Williams with 3, and a late Foderingham header.

Fail.

Interesting to see how much more solid we look with Nathan back. Good chance that Doyle will score so we'll need to get at least two of our own,3-1 Town,Smith,Louis and Reeves

Shaw Rosso - hope 'the patient' is on the mend.

I think we might need to score 3 to get a win tonight!  Anyone else going?

Would have gone on the saturday, too far for midweek

Think you may be right but this team does have three goals in it at least... as others have touched on, the return of Nathan Thompson to sweeper will be a massive settling influence.

And yes, I'm travelling up with two others at about 1.30pm. Looking forward to sampling some Chesterfield boozers.

Hope all is ok SR?

We've missed N.Thompson recently so hopefully him coming back into the defence and us playing with a 'lower' defensive line should help eliminate our susceptibility from the ball in behind.

Chesterfield are on a poor run and recently dropped their best player (some kid on loan from Villa) which has coincided with them not scoring so much any more. Gary Roberts misses the game with injury.

No idea about tonight so i'll say 1-0 Chesterfield.

I had this penciled in at the start of the season....mate who collects grounds wanted an expedition, as it's a new one for us.

Sadly...mid week is a no no.

Last time I went there, in 2003, we also played 3 at the back, Heywood, Reeeeeeeves, Viveash.  Quite possibly the slowest back 3 in the history of the beautiful game.

Chesterfield were hopelessly at the foot of the table with no win in 14......2 down in 20 mins. Kingy acknowledged his mistake by taking off Adi, and bringing on the lightweight Sebastian Ruster to make a 4-4-2.....it made little difference.

Playing 3 at the back is risky...because as we see, you're likely to concede, but you can create and score.

So overall, I like it, makes for fun football, even if it's a bit wing and a prayer at times.

Will have to up there game from the first half at Yeovil performance which shouldn`t be that difficult - like to think a draw was possible but I think we are on a slump so sorry to predict 2-1 home win......

Title: Re: Chesterfield v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread

It's odd - we are in a bit of a slump results wise and performances have certainly dropped... But really, we should have won the last 3 games.

If we persist our luck will change. I'd probably take a draw tonight. A tough game for sure.

Last time I went to Chesterfield was in the 80's on a Friday night but game was called off due to floodlight failure. Ended up in a pub near Moreton in Marsh that did a lock-in. When we left about 1ish, we were told to go out very quietly by the back door! - happy days.

Three points would be good but will take the one tonight.

Would have been tempted with this if it was still at Saltergate, proper ground that. Open air pisser which was basically a wall if i remember correctly.  The new ground looks a bit Colchester-like which can't be a good thing.

Not really confident about tonight but my predictions have been dreadfull this year so I'm happy to plump for a 2-0 defeat.

Good to have Nath back. I don't like the fact he's hovering 1 yellow away from a suspension, but that's what you get for being a no-holds barred Captain and tough-tackling player.

Clean sheet is important after the run of iffy results we've been having.

It's a shame that Cooper didn't manage to find a solution to NT's absence, because as sure as eggs are eggs he'll get a yellow soon...Kasim is only one away also, so we don't want that happen in the same game...although I suppose if Yasir is suspended and then goes off to play for Iraq, it would carry over and miss NT's.  Either way, it doesn't help.

On to Dongs on Sat then...going to be an interesting one this, as they'll be trying to play a sexy game also, 5-5 draw then.

Not wishing to drop a fly into your ointment here chaps but may i draw your attention to the huge five point chasm between yourselves and the two really really good teams in the auto places.

Make sure you have non staining shreddies on when you see our midfield ;)

371 is a decent turnout midweek

I'd advocate Nath picking up a booking Saturday so missing the Num cup tie.

I'd go further, that's a fucking great turn out from the guys who went.

Can anyone think of another player who has developed as much as Byrne has over the course of one summer? He's been superb this season.

its only this season they've really played him consistently in his proper position.

imagine what was wasted last season in having him left back  ::)

He was good going forward at LB, and don't forget he's a wingback now, not a right back. I think we'll really struggle to keep him in Jan.

Great evening watching the Reds on the road. We started a little tentatively then Yass and Mass got going, Byrne too. Fods made a good save halfway through the 1st half and that seemed to be a turning point. Game seesawed a bit in the first half, two sides who wanted to play attacking football. Anyway great goal by Byrne to put us 2-0 up. Twat commentator on Peak FM after the game - said we took our sole chance in the 2nd half. Must have had his eye shut and missed the other six or seven chances we created. Obika's header hit the post from about 2ft out, really we were much the better side in the 2nd half though. Thought Nathan T had a great game as well, Turnball and Stephens looked solid enough at the back and clean sheet a bonus going into the next few games. A mention for Smith, went close on a couple of occasions with difficult chances, not his night but he kept on working. Good to bump into the Duke of Banbury at half time as well.

Well, that was a fantastic game if you were a Swindon fan.Obika missed two chances that he would normally gobble up,Williams and Smith had good chances and 7or8 goals wouldn't have flattered us.So impressed with Smiths work ethic and Byrne,Yasser,Loungo and Louis were irrepressible and cut through Chesterfield at well. Nathan was my mom with the only weak link being Bell although I'm sure there's a footballer there somewhere.

Fantastic game with 2 teams going at each other.
Our attack tonight was immense with spaces created.
Mom was Masimo for me with the whole team a close second.
Wonderful game and many teams will come unstuck at Chesterfield, no mugs.
Well done Swindon.

Fucking superb result tonight. Missed kick off thanks to a blow out early on the M40 and it taking the "rescue" 3 hours to change the bloody thing. Had to watch us beer free (until half time anyway) for the first time in ages. Didn't look too promising at the start but we soon slipped into gear and were a joy to watch. Decent turnout and good noise from our fans and we don't need a drum either.

Haha. We did get towed to Beaconsfield which has the only pub in a service station in the country I believe. Not too bad for most but I was driving the fucking thing up there so was unable to partake. Funnily enough we've just gone past the scene of the crime on the way back. Why the hell they don't have spare tyres in these things anymore I will never know.

Agree with the reports above by other attendees.  They were all over us like the proverbial cheap suit at the start but we then settled down and had the better of most of it.  We could and should have scored more goals.  Obika missed two sitters, Williams could have had a second and Reeves also had a good chance at the end.  The defence looked much more secure with Nathan in there and the midfield was stronger as a consequence.  Thought Smith struggled a bit today.  His first touch was like it was last season!

A decent turnout by Town fans (371), including a few northern types supporting the Town.  There was even a couple who live in Exeter, who drove to Gloucester and picked up the supporters' coach from there!  Fair play to them.

All in all, a worthwhile trip for me and another ground ticked off.

No offence intended!  It was great to see them there. I know from previous trips to games 'oop north' that quite a few Swindon exiles look forward to attending these games.  I remember having a long pre-match chat to a guy at Morecombe a couple of years ago who had moved to Cumbria many years previously.  Actually, a couple of us apologised to some who were sitting nearby last night when some Town fans chanted "You dirty northern bastards" at one point.   :)

It was probably Vic and his wife who picked up the coach at Gloucester, then.  I didn't say there was anything wrong with it.  Quite the opposite, in fact!

Always have a little read what other teams and found some good comments and a thread on the Spirites forum.

Quote
poor poor tactical analysis from the management but fair play to Swindon who were a superb better side than us

We were outclassed by a good team

But fair play to Swindon, a good side and comprehensively beaten.

Apart from a bright opening ten minutes , we were beaten by a far better team.

Let's not play down what was a very very good Swindon team performance. They were superior to us in every department tonight and for me were the best side I've seen up here this season.

Still, a great game to watch. Credit to Swindon, though - there are worse ways to play away from home and get a result.

Swindon will be at least top six and have a good chance of automatic.

We played 3 cms and they absolutely destroyed us through the middle. Cut us apart like they werent even there. They should have won by more, they were incredibly comfortable

A whole thread on it here too...

Our budget is smaller than Oxford's in Div 4....their new owners have chucked money at it, so they've a massive squad of big name players, a big name manager and a shed load of back room staff. The owner admits they'll lose £2 mill this season....whereas we should just about break even.

The chucking money at it route is OK, if you can trust the owner....

I'm not going to say that I didn't enjoy the PDC/Wray season of spunking money up the wall, but to achieve the same on a sensible budget would mean so much more.

Sad that Cooper won't get much recognition for it. Certainly less than Eddie "hasn't he done well Steve?" Howe/PDC/Ferguson and other managers who have spent big to get results in the past.

We're currently not operating at a loss, that much has been made clear by Power, and is fantastic considering what has been going on over the past 12 months. We should (should!) make a profit this year if things keep on as they are barring any kind of disaster, which frankly will be very impressive indeed.

Chesterfield have always pretty decent support, certainly not too dissimilar to our recentish numbers, plus of late they've had a new ground bounce, so this season, they're averaging a tad higher than us.

As I said before, in recent years their crowds have been more or less comparable to ours. When taking into account the place is half the size, what it shows, is that our fanbase is to some extent based on the "traditional" Swindon of the Works, a bit of London overspill, and the out of towners. The more recent agglomeration of say the last 20 years, seemingly contribute very little, unless a trip to Wembley etc.

If you can/are interested, check out the way Peterborough's Marcus Maddison takes his free kicks. He scored free kicks at home to Barnsley and Oldham that looked to be inch perfect and his goal away at Cov last weekend looked to go straight to the keeper, however he seemed to dive past it. Pretty sure he has some technique which causes the ball to move stupidly in the air. Presume Yas did something similar.

Cristiano Ronaldo, has shown that it is possible to get a modern ball to wobble about, like a Shane Warne zooter.  I'd like a bit more evidence though before being convinced the Mesopotamian Pirlo, is on to something.

I could live with it...but would worry that Babylon is nowadays a bit tarnished by Marleyesque rasta association, with corruption and decadence.

It wasn't as bad as they make out. Fight the rasta power.

Like supporting Assad's regime against IS, I find myself unwittingly aligned to DMR.

At least you got everyone's name right, that's better than our local paper usually manages.

I'm standing on the back row right under the left of the scoreboard, I wondered why a new stadium never had a score board, honestly never knew it was there.   ::)

Bale does it as well. You aim the valve to where you want the ball to go, hit the ball on the valve with a flat foot. It's fucking hard to do but if you get it right....

Saw a fascinating baseball documentary in the States a year or 2 back about an old style of pitching the ball. Called a knuckleball, the idea is to throw the ball without imparting any spin on it at all. Seen in slow mo, the ball just doesn't turn or spin at all as it goes through the air. What it does do is swerve, drop and do all sorts of weird things, due to some sort of aerodynamics that it seems no-one understands, least of all the pitcher. Crucially these balls are pitched at 50mph or thereabouts, rather than the 90+ of a typical fastball.

Just like Drogba and Ronaldo, and maybe Yas, do to a football. That Yas free kick seemed to float into the net, it wasn't a rocket.

Feedback - very fair summation. One point from pedant's corner though, for an aspiring journo, appalling grammar mistake in the para dealing with Obika missing a sitter. You'll probably be ok for a job at the Daily Mail though.
