Title: Sleep. How much do you need? How much do you get?
Post by: THE FLASH on Monday, October 27, 2014, 20:18:39
Conversation at work today.....bloke only needs four hours!

I need about six hours...eight is good.

Start work at 6 so up at 5, and many at work are in bed half 8 or 9
Screw that
I get by on 6 or so hours tho come the weekend a lie in catches up the loss.
Ideally 8 would be better but can't bring myself to go to bed any earlier.

8 would be lovely. 6 will do. The kids seem to conspire so that I get 4-5 most nights.

I do get to nap in the afternoon quite often though. Sleeping at around lunchtime is brilliant because the combination of sleep and the brain being active makes for some mental dreams.

I haven't figured it out. I aim for about 7 hours but last night I had about 5 and felt really good so fuck knows. Coffee sorts it out.

Used to think I could function on 6 hours for years. Finally realised it wasn't doing wonders for my health and now feel much better with a full 8 hours.

Everyone is different. I was hellbent on getting 8 hours but still always seemed tired so tried to sleep more. Ironically my Dr said try sleeping for less and I've found 7 hours is perfect for me and feel much more refreshed. Would appear too much sleep is as bad as not enough.

Takes me bloody ages to get to sleep regardless of what time it is or how tired I am, therefor I never know how many hours I get.

Only fall asleep straight away when shitfaced

Broken sleep is the worst feeling ever. Especially when you have young kids, or poorly kids.

6-7hrs during the week which is ample. The first hour of the day is always a chore but once I'm up and going, I don't feel tired during the day. I cash in at weekends though, especially now the cricket season has finished.

I like 8 hours, but I like to think I can survive on 4-6, but not for prolonged periods of time.

I've often done weeks and weeks with 4-6 hours or so a night, more often 4 hours, and eventually I start to feel pretty fucking broken and ill. I take that as a sign I'm tired and I then sleep for 12-14 hours for 4-5 nights and I'm ready and raring again.

I used to do whole weekends... I'd sleep on the Thursday night, go to work, finish work and go back home for feeding, showering and what not. I often wouldn't sleep again until I arrived home late on Sunday to get enough kip to go to work on Monday bright and breezy*

*I wasn't usually bright and breezy on Monday at work, but that would because I didn't sleep on the Sunday night either.

There's no fucking way I could do that now.

Need about 7ish, mostly manage about 5/6.

Then again I drink a lot of coffee at work. Benefit of working in a pub with a proper espresso machine, and also living in an area full of ex-londoners, so when I go for house calls they've all got espresso machines in their houses.

"Couldn't do without my Gaggia daaaaaahling!"

I do ok on about 6 hours sleep. More than that and it makes me feel worse if anything.

That Sleep Cycle app is worth a try. I've started using it again and I'm convinced I wake up feeling more awake and refreshed.

I've been looking in to sleep tracking. I'm aware you can get apps for your phone but they can yield mixed results if you share a bed. I considered something like a Jawbone Up, but then I might just wait until smart watches get a bit more feature-full and plump for one of them instead.

I get about 5 or 6 hours a night through the week, weekends can be 7 or 8 depending on whether it's my day to get up with the boys, but even then I'll get another hour or two in bed once the other half is up. I don't finish work til 10pm so don't often feel ready for bed much before 12, sometimes 1am, but my youngest is up any time after 5am and the other half starts work at 8, so always up early. Coffee and Monster help me through!

6 hours is all I can sleep before my body decides its time to get up, always up at 6 every day unless I have a late night then sometimes its 7.

If I go to bed at 2 then I am awake by 7 no matter what, but thats only ever weekends, so 6 hours weekdays and between 5 and 6 at weekends for me.

Working shifts, I get anything from 4-10 hours depending on what shift I am on, and where I am in that set.

I'm always tired, basically.

I aim for 8 hours during the week but usually get about 6-7 hours.

I have the world's smallest bladder so have to get up in the night more often than not which annoys me and breaks up my sleep.

I usually get around 6-7 hours, the problem I really suffer with is getting off to sleep. Once I am asleep I tend to sleep well but I struggle to get off and it can occassionally be 2-3am before I go.

What really kills me though is the c.4 hours I spend commuting each day, it means that my Friday I am shattered.

I am having a big change in January going from the above to a 30 second commute to the dining room to turn a computer on, I do wonder what this will do to my sleep patterns?

Do you pedal for the commute?

No I walk for c. 1 hour and sit on a train for c.3 hours it bloody kills me - travel just shatters me - always has done. Cycling would at least achieve something by helping my riding fitness!

Still an hour daily walk, is about the length to give you some benefit, and you'll miss it when at home....

I work at home a lot, and get far more tired, than when out and about. I do sleep better though as it takes away the worry of being late in the morning!

Interesting, I kind of assumed it would make me less shattered - its sitting on the train which seems to tire me out!

I am planning to make sure I get out and about a bit so I don't go stir crazy or get murdered by the wife for e being under her feet all the time!

I also need to ensure I get some walking in or get out more on my bike (which is a bif objective), as I know that walking c.3 miles a day is quietly keeping weight off!

Need 5 hours to be ok. Usually get around 6-7 and never feel like shit.
I never have a sleep that is unbroken and can't remember the last time I did. Always need a piss during the night and can be awake for an hour sometimes before drifting back off.

This, unfortunately we have someone else's cat in the house at night recently which ended up in a big fight with fur all over the place, and our cat is very wary now and seems to want reassurance!

Unless you've put the cat flap in your bedroom door?

I'm amazed at how few hours sleep most of you need.  I get around 8-8.5 hours each night but feel properly rested after 9.

On the occasions I do have around 7, my eyes look like absolute shit and everyone tells me how tired I look.

I wonder whether we're just all different or you guys should really be sleeping more (or me less).

I reckon the older you get the less sleep you need, (apropos of nothing)

My cat parenting skills are lacking in all fairness, should have given it a whack the first time it tried it but the ship has sailed on that one now.

Easiest way to train a cat is with a water spray bottle. My boy, Picard, used to meow at the bedroom door every morning around 6am. 5 days of spray and he's never done it again.

Try not to get it in the eyes as they can get infected.

We've got one who will scratch the door and another who will just make a noise outside it. Will take Jayos tip on the water spray though, we used that with some success a little while ago to keep them off of kitchen counters/dining table so that may work.

Whatever time I go to bed I seem to wake up around 5am, even at weekends  :( My ageing bones seem to make the decision now, not like in my youth when I could sleep for 12 hours  :)
