Christian Roberts is our friend, he drinks Stella. Let him out to drink some more etc.

Last time I recall hearing Harry Roberts was that Cheltenham game under King, when Gurney got involved with the crowd.

Harry Roberts is our friend, is our friend, is our friend, Harry Roberts is our friend...he kills coppers.

In the days, when coppers used to form a line in the TE, and wade in when things kicked off....helmets would fly everywhere and then be bunged around like beach balls at Wycombe.

A mate of my old man was a copper, who I therefore knew, he was a lovely old fella, who liked nothing better than delivering a good smacking to someone in the ruck  :)

I once took issue with a flat cap senior officer, who responded by slapping me round the chops with his leather gloves like some sort of Gestapo officer....

My ex brother in law was in the force in the early 80s he too loved that sort of thing, giving a beating to unsuspecting hooligans!

Until he got hit on the head on the Stratton Bank when on duty with a brick thrown by a Boremuff fan in the trouble filled match in 87 when we were 3rd and the muff top.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke ;)

Anyhone read the Jake Arnott book that nicked the name?

I remember joining in with these, although not having any idea who he was.

Back then it seemed you spent as much time in conflict with the OB as you did watching the game

I don't remember that chant at all, I didn't even know who he was until I saw the article. To be fair though he was inside well before my first game.

Need some more old chants you don't hear any more.

How about 'We don't carry hammers'

It was still sung till quite recently but very prevalent in the 70s and 80s mostly.

Last time I heard it from our lot was on the march back from Ashton Hate to Temple Meads. The Henderson brace I think it was.

Yep that's one of the HR songs I remember.

But there was another one sung to the tune of
If you go down to the woods today.....
Remember that one ? Brutal - I can't bring myself to type the words !

And also HR is our king, is our king, is our king
HR is our king - he kills coppers.
Dunno what song that tune is from though.

Oh and also
Harreeee, Harry Roberts,
Harry Roberts is our king
[ad infinitum..]

Jeez thats four !

Did every club sing these songs or what ?

The middle tune is from a Childrens nursery rhyme, sort of ring a ring of roses era

If you go down to the woods today....you'll hardly believe your eyes
If you go down to the woods today....you're in for a big surprise
For Jeremy the Sugar Puffs Bear....has bought some boots and cropped his hair.
Today's the day the skinheads (take the Town End)*

* alter to suit

Loosely themed with Figaro

Philip Cuervo's magic

He wears a magic hat

And when he signed for Swindon

He said 'I fancy that'

He could have joined Man City

Or Oxford (but they're shite)

He said 'I'm joining Swindon cos they're fucking dynamite'

To the banana splits tune: One a skinhead, two a skinhead, three a skinhead, four, get a P******* and roll him on the floor, kick him in the bollocks, kick him in the head, poor old P**** nearly dead. followed by many chants of agro time.  Probably being used by the NF now

Harry Roberts is our friend, is our friend, is our friend, Harry Roberts is our friend...he kills coppers.

Followed by "let him out to kill some more......"

Then the helmets would land in front of Jimmy Allen.

Not supporting it but remember it well.

interesting, looks like no-one else so far remembers the other three HR songs, other than the ring a roses
reference.

am enjoying y'all filling in the gaps in my memory/hearing :-)
being deaf i was always fascinated by the chants, cos i had to work hard to grasp them. was stood in middle of town end
for years.

so i bought all the chant books that were out there, and found that several that we sang didn't seem to be in them...
[i don't just mean the changed words, but the actual chants themselves]

am still puzzling on that one

so this HR mystery has deepened that also !

Re the brutal one, ok i'll set it down and see if people amend it. I don't recall Jeremy getting into that one, but it was nice to be reminded of him in the other one :-)

If you go down to the woods today you'll get a big surprise
If you go down to the woods today, you'll never believe your eyes

[then next 2 lines something like, and 3rd line deffo that one]

There's lots and lots of Swindon fans
Shouting with joy and clapping their hands
Watching Harry Roberts kill the coppers.

[ouch !]
