Title: Barnsley v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Friday, September 26, 2014, 23:00:22
The Opponent:  Barnsley

After another good win on the road we continue with our own the road theme with a journey up to Yorkshire in search of another 3 points to add to our decent start to the season. Just 1 defeat in League 1 so far this season suggests we will be difficult to beat and the encouraging form of all 3 of our strikers has probably been the surprise of the season for me. I’m sure a few amongst us thought Obika and Williams would be lucky to manage 4 for the season.
The first reference to Barnsley occurs in 1086 in the Doomsday Book, in which it is called 'Berneslai' and has a population of around 200. The origin of the name Barnsley is subject to debate, but Barnsley Council claims that its origins lie in the Saxon word "Berne", for barn or storehouse, and "Lay”, for field. Barnsley is notable as a former industrial town centred on coal mining and glassmaking although in the town few factories remain, notably the glassworks and coking plant. Although the industries declined in the 20th century, Barnsley's culture is rooted in its industrial heritage. Barnsley has a tradition of brass bands, originally created as social clubs for its mining communities. Hopefully none of these brass bands are represented at Oakwell later today.

Some well known folk with Barnsley blood include former cricketer and commentator Darren Gough, Legendary umpire Dickie Bird, former chat show host and now “Are you over 50?” advert star Michael Parkinson, Cyclist Ed Clancy, Socialism’s very own Arthur Scargill, Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy and footballers Brian and Jimmy Greenhoff

Last Time Out –  Saturday 20th September – Port Vale 2 Barnsley 1 -  Port Vale ended a run of six successive defeats as Mark Marshall's (yes him) late goal gave them a deserved win over Barnsley. He was lively from the outset and goalkeeper Ross Turnbull had to make a number of saves before being beaten by Michael O'Connor's superb free kick.  Conor Hourihane levelled from the spot after he was bundled over, but Jordan Slew fired over the bar when he was fouled and Vale were awarded a penalty.  Marshall cut inside and beat two men before firing home to seal the win and continue Danny Wilson’s Barnsley to just 1 point out of the last 9.
Starting XI –  Turnbull, Mvoto, Nyatanga, Dudgeon, Brown (Bree), Treacy (Winnall), Jennings, Cranie, Hourihane, Lita (Bailey), Cole

They have served us both – Sep Atterbury, Billy Batty, William Batty, Michael Reddy, Mark Robinson, Arthur Ruddlesdin, Nile Ranger, Fola Onibuje, Jay McEveley, Frank Nouble, Albert Milton, Ray McHale, Alfred Brown, Danny Blanchflower, Tommy Birtles, David Lucas, Don McPhail, Harry May, Ken Lambert, Jack Lavery, Tommy Little, Deon Burton, Lewis Clayton, harry Cope, Jamie Cureton, Charlie Dowdall, Rory Fallon, Frank Heppinstall, Matt Hewlett, Brian Howard, Paul Hart, Bart Griemink, Jimmy Gill, Jake Findlay, Jan Fjortoft, David Geddis, Ian Woan, Paul Walker, George Travers, Dick Rushton, Billy Silto, Carl Tiler, Danny Wilson, Tony Warner

One From The Past – February 12th 2005 – Swindon 2 Barnsley 1 – Att 5’511 (334 away fans).  Goals either side of half time from Super Sammy Parkin were enough to give us the 3 points on the day. One notable future star on our teamsheet that day was none other than Jamie Slabber.

The Odds –  Barnsley 7/4 Draw 13/5 Swindon 13/8

The Son Says – .Seeing as they have just come down from The Championship he is expecting an uphill battle (I told him about the uphill battle leaving the ground), 1-1.

The Prediction –  Danny Wilson certainly seems to be working his magic on yet another Yorkshire footballing outfit and if they carry on their recent form it is going to be a very long season for them. 1-3, goals from Smith (2) and Nathan Byrne.

And Finally – The first bottle bank for glass recycling collection in the United Kingdom was introduced by both Stanley Race CBE, then president of the Glass Manufacturers' Federation and Ron England in Barnsley. Fingers crossed the home team bottle it today.

I believe Michael Parkinson is editing the Barnsley Chronicle next week....be interesting to see the report of the game.  I'm fairly sure the word enticing won't be spelt wrongly.

Apparently he was sacked from the paper about 60 years ago  :)

Tykes 2 - 1 Town

Injuries to affect formation and attacking options. Town 1 up at the break but Wilson comes up with the 'it you don't pull your fingers out I'll be sacked tomorrow' half-time speach, which will save his bacon.

I met the Bard of Barnsley, Ian McMillan, once - a very nice bloke who likes his footy and thougth J Mac was decent.

I've got that feeling too, but I didn't want to say anything as I might jinx it.

2-1 win today for the Town, Obika and Andy Williams doing the business in front of 8800, with 295 Town fans present.

Too early for that...remember a season like 81/82, top after 10 games with a side of promising youngsters and some good experienced players.....got relegated.

If say at the end of January, we're there or thereabouts, have shown some consistency on the road, to all these norvern hell holes, then maybe some excitement will be justified.

For example....do we still do overnight stops?  I think for Bradford it was a 6:00 am start on the bus, all of this stuff, possibly heavy pitches, injuries etc, is the sort of attrition you need to deal with...and it aint easy.

The old cliches are the best....you're as good as your last game and take each game as it comes....we've had a good week,  it should be enjoyed...but that's it really.

For Reg, excitement is never justifiable.

Far from it...as I said we've had a good week and hopefully all Town fans will have enjoyed it in the traditional manner....namely a few beers and some banter, in a venue of choice before and after games, with  fellow Town fans of all vintages.

Nevertheless, to extrapolate that we're on the verge of lifting off from our 21st century perch of Div 3/ occ Div 4 outfit, based on the evidence of 8 early season games (5 home and 3 away) isn't justified.  However feel free to think that it is...

I've said elsewhere previously that I see little point in looking at the table and making assumptions about where we'll end up till around December, I'm not some kind of mindless fan who sees us get two wins and thinks we're going to be in the Premiership in a year and a half.

But the performances we've seen the past few games, the way the team is playing, and the fact we look like we're going to continue it for a while yet even if we suffer a few injuries, well, excuse me for having some positivity about how the season will unfurl.

Mrs. Flasheart's making a stew.

Nailed on win.

Oooh eck, bit early in the season to bring out the big guns!

I disagree, Reg.

Had a similar feeling under Hoddle when early on in the season I saw us thump Ipswich away 4-1 on a Tuesday evening.

Mickey Hazard ran the show that game.

I realise our present squad is young in the extreme but they are hugely talented.

In the fans phone in Cooper said he had a choice of either Bradford or Barnsley for an overnight.  He asked for both but Power said he could have one or the other..

Obviously the result at Bradford gave Cooper some justification for another overnight, fair play to Power :)

Well, that's that.

Simple 3-0 win and the clean sheet should not be underestimated.

The way things are going could we beat our own record of 6 consecutive games played away -  and winning the lot!

Half way there

Got home from the Castle Combe Mini Day just before half time so caught the end of the first half. I was very impressed with the way the team played today.

If we keep playing like this, Promotion is ours to lose, surely.

Cooper:
- Got goal and good second half
- Excellent goal from Byrne
- Bradford pressed so difficult to dominate for 90 mins
- Thompson tired and replaced by Reeves
- Killed the game with 9-10 mins to go
- Important to get clean sheet
- Couple of wobbles. We seemed to forget to do things that had got us a 3-0 lead
- Professional display. 1st half difficult for us to play. Gave them minimal opportunities. Could have scored ourselves
- 1st half 6/10 2nd half 8/10
- Stephens lost lots of weight with illness. Still looked good
- Done a bit of work with Bell
- Brad Smith not far off fit
- Obika. Injury not good. First signs not great. Could be ligaments in shoulder after dislocation
- Pretty determined squad.

You really haven't got a fucking clue have you? This is the 4th season in a row in which you've been horribly, spectacularly wrong, and it still doesn't seem to register. I suggest that you take a nice swig of sterodent and shut your trap, because you're in for a loooooong season  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick: :smugfu:

This is good.  Leaving aside for a moment that we're one of the bigger clubs in the division anyway, it can only work in our favour if Barnsley, Sheff United etc. are approaching games against us with an 'it's only Swindon' attitude.  Their loss.  (No pun intended.)

Fair few out there still probably see us as 'Paolo Di Canio's Swindon' without the PDC.  I'd be more than happy for the opposition to continue to underestimate us.

Being a bit under then radar, is never a bad thing. A bit like Leyton Orient were last season, OK they missed out at the end, but it was close.  This season they pretty much started as promotion favourites and so far it hasn't happened.

I still have concerns about the depth of the squad.  At some point, we are going to have an injury pile up and we're going to be stretched in terms of personnel.  And we have a young, enthusiastic, motivated and energetic set of players - but how will they perform this winter in difficult conditions when the passing game may not be as effective, and we're a few players down, and there's little in the way of experience to draw on?

I'm not down.  Far from it.  I'm just recognising that there are going to be many hurdles to jump between now and May.  It's going to be a struggle, and we are likely to lose an influential player or two in January as well.

A cracking start - and well done Mark Cooper for that - but just a start.  Every game as it comes now.

And get well soon, JO.

We do now have a bit of cover in the squad....you're always going to get injuries etc...if lucky then they're spread out rather than being all at once.  It seems as if Ben Gladwin is nearly back to full fitness, I hope he can get back to where he was before the injury, as he can be a key player for us.

Another decent away day today.
First half Barnsley pushed us and never let us settle.
As soon as Byrne scored we seemed to relax more and looked comfortable on the ball.
Then "bang" "bang" 3-0 up and we started to take the piss.
Super Cooper is doing well.
Hoping we can keep the side together this season, thus the stay aways can play their part by coming through the turnstiles.
Teams like this one at Swindon as history will tell never last forever.
I for one am enjoying this one.

The squad isn't as small as you may think... With players like Branco, Gladwin and Smith missing today it proves that we do have cover.
Reeves is proving he is more than good enough too, and must be pushing for a start.
We have a good squad now, with some outstanding players, things are good, let's enjoy it.

Surely, the moral of this story is.....don't keep your radio in the loo. Transfer it to the living-room...then, perhaps, you would have heard live coverage of the Reeeeeves goal.

And we've also seemed to have found a cutting edge that we never had for large parts of last season. Whilst we played a lot of pretty football last year there were far too many games where we just never looked like scoring - early days yet but the amount of chances we're creating and finishing this year is hugely encouraging.

Do you think it helps having two up top?

Last year we kind of just had Ranger, then Smith. This year we have Smith, Willo and Obika looking dangerous at different times. I don't think its just that, but it helps.

Hope Obika;s arm isn't as screwed as we think.

For a short time Ranger, N'Guessan and Ajose as a front 3 looked as if it would do the business, but Ranger was Ranger, N'Guessan went off the boil completely and Ajose left. 3-5-2 seems more difficult for sides to counter than our 4-3-3 did. The most satisfying thing about results rolling in at the moment is that it is based on a clear method that is working. It's not luck. We keep the ball, move well off it, score good goals and sides seemingly tire against us when they press. I was very against Cooper's appointment but my God he's changed my mind. We're incredibly lucky to have him and Luke Williams.

Great day yesterday - I went to watch Larkhall Athletic v Gosport Borough in the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Cup - Gosport 2 leagues higher - Larkhall came from 0-2 down to draw 3-3 - cracking game. Check halftimes from Barnsley which was 0-0 - great end result. This team including Cooper are becoming a pretty good side - desire to compete and to win is the key - we have that at the moment and a fair bit of skill......long may it continue.

It sounds like we're going to be without Obika for several weeks.  Let's hope he turns out to be a quick healer.

Without wishing to bring down doom upon ourselves, I think we've got a 'pretty ok' straight replacement in Williams, and with some youngsters, Gladwin soon back in the side, and the powerhouse of a midfield we've got at the moment, we could probably even play one up top with a midfielder in the hole if needs demand - Gladwin excelled in this kind of role I seem to remember last season, but someone like Luongo or Louis would, I'm sure, be just as good. (ducks objects thrown at the merest hint of playing one up top)

The best thing about this team at the moment? Everyone has remembered how to score. There are goals throughout the team, threats from all sorts of places, and the loss of one player isn't going to doom our season.

Well, yet.

Shit first half....Barnsley just harried us in midfield only to give the ball away and then nip at us again.....this went on for the whole half.

They were there for the taking and we did just that in the second half as its difficult to run around shutting players down for 90 odd minutes.

For me it was Thompsons driving run and shot that was pushed around the post which seemed to step us up a gear because to that point we were taking too many touches on the edge of their box.....and missing opps to shoot. Smith guilty of a couple.

Williams is better but needs to stop bleating every time he gets a hard tackle.....will he ever change?

Should of been more in the end as we handed them their arse on a plate.

Byrne is like a new signing....fucking brilliant yesterday although they were poor.

Obika injury is a blow....I lumped a tenner on a hatrick yesterday and I reckon he could of got it as well...50:1.

Wilsons dug out was showered with shit as the stand behind him emptied....burgers, pie wrappers, plastic bottles...the lot.

I really hope we smash the fuck out of Orient next week.....

I hadn't intended to go all 'Smeeton-esque' with my post.   :)   Just disappointed that, having at long last found someone who feeds off scraps in the box, he picks up what sounds like a long-term injury.  I'm sure you're right that we have the ability to adjust the set-up until he gets back.

Andy Williams - fair fucking play. I was almost dreading seeing him in a Town shirt but he's been nothing short of superb. It's amazing how different he is when he's playing with confidence! That chip he tried against Barnsley (that their keeper did well to save) was a cracking effort, as was his goal against Oldham.

It would be a blow to lose an inform Obika, but Smith & Williams have 12 between them already. It was quite weird seeing Barnsley make a mistake, and then us being quick and decisive to punish them. Long may it continue!

Hopefully we can keep this team together in January, suspect we mose lose 1 of Mass or Kassim, and possibly Williams as he is still on high wages, out of contract end of the season and likely to be released so to get a small fee may tempt Power if he can bring in another younger striker to replace him.

I thought that, but if we are still up there come Jan they may well be tempted to stay and sign new contracts.

They would only go to Championship clubs anyway

Always been a big of williams and it was destroying seeing him as the lone striker a year back with the fans on his back. An form williams is fantastic. Some of his goals in the di canio era were sheer class, pompey away and yeovil at home to mind.

Now Barnsley is gone, as is September. Here is the goals montage from this month. Already had 250+ views since yesterday evening and I've had some nice comments about them so I'm pretty happy with the response.

Hopefully I won't get told to stop making them when almost everyone is clearly enjoying re-living the highs of Swindon's matches.

I know my last video was judged solely on the music, but I can't appease everyone's tastes. Whether you think it's generally shit or it's your favourite song, everyone's different. If you don't think it fits the video, fair enough recommend me something to use next month.

I think it is the choice of music.

Personally I tend to listen to a lot heavier things like The Ghost Inside, Parkway Drive or generally punk/hardcore sort of bands but I do have time for anything if I think it's good. That's the beauty of everyone being different.

But after trying one or two of them behind it, it doesn't really go. This sort of montage needs a consistent beat to go with the content. I haven't just picked a random song from my iTunes because I like it.

Not to mention that knowing what a lot of football fans are like, I'm confident in saying that 80% of Swindon Town fans would prefer not to listen to my sort of music.

So if you have any recommendations, I'm all ears.

Yeah, I noticed that one or two times when watching it after it was uploaded. Not the best sample to open with I guess.

Tempted to put Bombtrack by Rage Against The Machine on the next one. But cutting the opening bass solo down a bit so the riff is used throughout.

Slightly different direction that would be interesting to see if it goes with it.

Probably shouldn't read TheTownEnd on my lunch break at work when it's a pretty stressful time ;).

Bryne's turnaround from last season is amazing. If he'd been on a 1 year deal I'd of released him in all honesty. I can't remember a player we've had making such improvements in their game in only 1 season.

Amankwaah? Was brilliant for most of the playoff season.. minus taking the piss out of cancer survivors.

Could possibly add Paynter to that list as well, if you were one of the ones who gave him (massively unwarranted) abuse. Also JP McGovern another one who went from shit to brilliant (and then back to shit again).

It's what happens when you play someone in their natural position. Last year he was sacrificed so that Nathan could maraud down the right, and he was the most right-footed left back I've ever seen.

Who?

I'm loving Byrne at the minute. But I fear that without Luongo inside him *chortle* then he isn't quite as powerful. Him and Luongo link-up like they've been together since birth. But I'm fully prepared to eat my hat on that one.

Everyone has massively stepped up this season, but Byrne especially. I guess the only players we could say hasn't is Barthram (hasn't had a chance to) or Branco who seams to have improved defensively but is still way too reckless for my liking.

He was erratic granted, but you could still see he was a decent player, was very good at cutting In and shooting with his right. Much better and more consistent where he is now though.

No I agree. But he would do anything to get on his right foot, including looping crosses in with the outside of the boot rather than try his left.

This used to infuriate me! I don't totally blame him as he was clearly uncomfortable on his left. There's still been several occassions where he's had a great chance to put a ball in and he's dummied to try and skin his man. He's boss at low crosses though!

Probably a mix of both, and a bit of technical. Ours cant even play commentary without falling over, what hope would it have with video as well?

From the way STFC have grasped social media and generally technology it doesn't surprise me.

I'd rather STFC took WWE's social media approach over what we're getting now. They ram it down your throat every 2 minutes, we only get anything from them 2 times a week & on a matchday.

According to the customer service of Player:
Quote
The full match replays are uploaded by the respective clubs directly. Unfortunately, we do not have control over this.

Pity, but it's worth checking on the opposition's Player site after each game to see if they show the whole game.

Remember, all club video, website, social media.... everything by radio comms and a single camera shoot on matchday... is run by our media team of one young guy.

The investment simply isn't there.

To be honest I'd much rather them spend any available cash on the team. If you want to see the whole game, instead of just a short highlights package, there's a simple solution for most....

Oh and I understand that, and he does a good job with limited resources. Thought it worth pointing out though. Tbh even a static camera that covered the entire pitch coupled with the radio commentary would be ok.

I understand there are budget issues with this, and part of that is probably due to the fact clubs are seemingly forced into the contract with Player by the FL, but it's something worth looking at.

And I'm not saying that I wouldn't rather spend every matchday in the sole pursuit of Swindon Town, but I unfortunately have this terrible need to eat.

As somebody that can't attend matches... I agree.

True.....But for those of us that live abroad the opportunity to see a whole game rather than just the goals and a couple of minutes of highlights is rare and very welcome.

If the whole games are filmed (as they used to be) it wouldn't cost anything to upload the games to the Player site.....as other teams clearly do.
