Title: Swindon Town v Sheffield United Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Friday, September 19, 2014, 23:18:57
The Opponent:  Sheffield United

We move on from Tuesday night for the 2nd home game on the bounce, and arguably the more difficult of the 2. There were still some positives to take from the game, the goals from Jonathon Obika have been a pleasant surprise, hopefully he, Smith and Williams (another plus) can form some decent partnerships over the coming weeks.

The area that is now the City of Sheffield has been occupied since at least the last ice age, about 12,800 years ago. On the theme of Ice, Sheffield Ski Village is the largest artificial ski resort in Europe. Knowing what her great great great great great Grandson, Alex Salmond had planned for the future, Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in Sheffield Castle and Sheffield Manor for 14 years.  Sheffield is the greenest city in England, 61% of the city is greenspace,  and the city has more trees per person than any other city in Europe. Roughly a third of Sheffield lies in The Peak District National Park. In a recent study, the Sheffield district of Hallam was the highest ranking area outside London for overall wealth.

Some famous Sheffield folk include Peter Stringfellow, Michael Palin, Marty Caine, Anna Walker, Sean Beanflicker, Prince Naseem Hamed, Brendan Ingle, Michael Vaughan, Judge Pickles, Jarvis Cocker, Sebastian Coe and a whole host of musical talent including Tony Christie, Def Leppard, The Dylans, Heaven 17, Arctic Monkeys, The Longpigs, Moloko and The Future Loop Foundation.

Last Time Out –  Tuesday 16th September – Colchester 2 Sheffield United 3 - Sheffield United came from 2-0 down with seven minutes to play to record a dramatic victory over Colchester. Colchester's Alex Gilbey hit a post early on and his side went ahead when George Moncur headed in at the second attempt after 31 minutes. The next Gazza, Freddie Sears, made it 2-0 when Mark Howard spilled the ball, but Ben Davies sparked the comeback with a low finish. Substitute Ryan Flynn prodded in the equaliser and Davies' penalty won the game after Stefan Scougall was fouled, to complete a quite remarkable comeback. The Blades find themselves 1 point and 1 place above us in League 1.

Starting XI –  Howard, Collins, McGahey, McEveley (Reed), Alcock, Doyle, Davies, Harris, Wallace (Scougall), Higdon, McNulty

They have served us both – Carl Tiler, Danny Wilson, Mark Yeates, Paul Thirlwell, Frank Talia, Grant Smith, Tom Philipson, Brian Richardson, Paul Richardson, Lilian Nalis, Ray McHale, Brian Marwood, David Lloyd, Lescinel Jean Francois, Chris Kamara, Pat Keating, Brian Howard, Darius Henderson, Paul Heald, Bernard Harris, Fred Hawley, John Harris, Harry Hampson, Chris Guthrie, Sam Furniss, Wayne Allison, Graham Anthony, Billy Batty, Darren Bullock, Alfred Brown, Frank Becton, Herbert Chapman, Trevor Churchill, Glenn Cockerill, Jay McEvely, Paul Crichton, Mark Dempsey, Peter Dornan, Jan Fjortoft, Steve Foley

One From The Past –  January 8 1921 – FA Cup 1st Round – Att: - 18’685. Although Reg can probably give us a pass by pass memory of the game, the only goal was scored by the legendary Harold Fleming. You have to wonder what the value of such a player would be in modern day football. His goalscoring record with us speaks for itself, 9 goals for England from just 11 appearances suggests he was the real deal.

The Odds –  Swindon 5/4  Draw 12/5  Sheffield United 9/4 – Following Jon Obika’s great start to his Town career you can currently get 6/1 for him to score first with Skybet, he is as short as 9/2 elsewhere.

The Son Says – Another home win on the cards as far as he is concerned, after some thought and a brief change of mind, he has gone for a 3-1 victory.

The Prediction – We seem to be playing well enough although the defence can be a bit worrying at times. I think this will be a 2-1 win, goals from Obika and Luongo, 7’450 in attendance with 987 from South Yorkshire.

And Finally – Two roads in Sheffield have been named after twinned sister cities; a section of the A6102 in Norton is named Bochum Parkway, and a road in Hackenthorpe is named Donetsk Way. Likewise in Bochum, Germany there is a major road called the Sheffield-Ring.

Actually able to go to this one - reckon a 3-1 win, with an Andy Williams brace as the band in my local finished with 'Moon River' tonight.

IT'S A SIGN I TELLS YOU!

Our record v Blades at the CG is tidy, I prefer the 1908 FA Cup replay for old skool stuff.

I saw Andy Rowland today, looking well in OT. I was taken by his wearing of shorts and couldn't help but think, I saw those legs score a hat-trick v Blades in a 5-2 win in 81. Important as we needed a point from the last game that season to preserve our Div 3 status.....key point because Blades went down to Div 4 and we managed to stave off that ignominy for another season, whereas a loss would have seen us down in their stead.....if memory serves Don Givens missed a pen for them which if scored would have seen them stay up.

Shirley that would have made it 5-3 - unless it came down to goal average.

Anyway, I'm going 3-3, Williams hat trick, 8210, with 1114 Full Montys

Changed me ticket from TE  to Arkells so I can actually see the fecking game this time

When did our silence start?
I remember the 70s and 80s what an atmosphere we generated.
2 2 draw.

Some folks on Twitter are wanting to clap for the 10th minute for Brian Clough. Mainly Sheffield United fans for obvious reasons, but I'm sure we could appreciate a great contribution to football like his was?

I think this too. At a wedding in Aberdeen so May absence may also mean a heavy home win (unlikely though!)

Fully intended to go today but I'm post-back surgery (two weeks ago) and have had a mild episode today so it's a risk that isn't worth taking.

Town need a disciplined performance, no moments of madness etc.

On STFC Player the Swindon commentary is barely audible and is shown as off air! The Sheffield commentary is loud and clear but only on the old player ... not the DVR player. Please correct this so we can get what we have paid for!

Liquid football at times from the Town. Should be 2 or 3 up at least.

Sheff only getting chances after us giving the ball away through the odd mistake, good save from Wes when the ball looked destined to hit the back of the net. Apart from that Sheff have done feck all except falling over.

"The best I've seen Swindon play since I've known Pete. Nice passing. If we get anything out of this game I'll have to wear a highwayman mask" anonymous sheff u fan behind enemy lines . he's with one of us, he quite alright.
---
Really enjoyable half. We should have scored 3 or 4. Passed really well at times, kept the back really well. Looked really dangerous running at them.

They had a couple of chances later in the half but we are more than worthy of our lead.

And therein lies the issue. More than worthy, yet only 1 0 up.

3 good chances not taken

Beaker - cut back from byline couldn't quite drill a left foot shot in at the near post.

Beaker - Free header from Byrne run and cross. Not enough power to to beat the covering defender.

Massimo. Clean through, failed to trouble keeper whereas Smith didn't

Correct. The question is whether attendances last year were inflated by ST holders who actually only made it to 15 games or so.

Power did say in an interview last week that he will play the fringe players against the taffs, so expect Belford in goal, Williams to start along with Reeves.

Correct. The question is whether attendances last year were inflated by ST holders who actually only made it to 15 games or so.

I might be being thick here but I still don't get your point...

What are the restrictions these days regarding who we can play in the JPT without getting fined?

I think the point he is making is that we have at least as many if not more "walk ups" per game but the season ticket numbers are down...hence the lower crowds.

Doesn't the JPT have that rule where you can only make 5 changes from the weekend's line-up?

Head to head over 32 games, they shade it by 11 wins to us to 13 to them, with 8 draws....not really indicative of a massive difference.

Just got back to the car. That was a rather enjoyable game of football.

Pre-match Williams proved he's a nice bloke by hopping over the barriers to check the person he smacked in the face with a shot was ok.

First half - well, to be blunt, Sheffield looked like they were a bit Shit. They had absolutely no idea what to do with us. Press us and we'd pass back and through them, leave us alone and we'd pass around and through them. JMac did a good job keeping Byrne quiet, and the score should have been 3/4-0 by half time - not sure how Obika missed his first chance, or Luongo his, but Sheffield were lucky to have Obikas second attempt cleared off the line. Not much else to say really, we utterly controlled the half and Sheffield can, well't have had more than 2 minutes in total on the ball.

Second half, well, it was all very well and good (Louis Thompson's buildup in particular was bloody fantastic) until we scored our third and the boys concentrated too hard on getting number 4, and we were swiftly 3-2. Sheffield seemed to remember they were a top of the table side and started to bring it to us. But then Willo trickled a cheeky ball over the line and that was that. The fifth was, well, sublime. I really hope they got Yaser's work in the corner because it is quite simply some of the best skill I've seen from any Swindon player ever.

Yaser's yellow was I think semi deliberate as it means he's got a clean sheet again for the league. Think we'll see a couple of players rested at Newport, but frankly if our players are anything like Reeves who came on for Luongo, we'll absolutely rinse them.

That was great. In the first half particularly one or two of our passing moves were spectacular! Its not that we were a constant threat, but we opened them up with 5 or 6 quality chances. When we weren't threatening we kept the ball well, which is about right. But we should have scored more, 1-0 is never enough.

Second half we scored the penalty and the third and we should have been safe. But they scored one, their tales went up and they scored another. And it looked like we were really up against it as at best an equaliser looked likely. I don't think we so much fell apart, Sheffield United were just showing there really is a decent team in them..

But Brad Smith surged forward, played in Willo, who looked to have scuffed his shot far too softly, but had in fact placed it perfectly to make it 4-2. And after that we were never in trouble. Good skills from Kassim (he and Luongo were nearly back to their best) and a thumper from Louis.

What really hurt Sheff U today was in part our passing and ball retention. But also we ran at them with pace as they sat deep. They couldn't cope with that.

We have just annihilated a decent team who will be up there come the end of the year. I thought we'd lose this before the game but boy I was wrong. Some of the quality on show from us to day was stunning. The 5th goal in particular goes into "knocking one out" territory. The skill from Kasim was unbelievable, the pass perfect, the finish from Louis perfect. I would say wrap up goal of the season now but there's more to come from this lot.
It would take too long to go into just how fucking good we are. All the fans who have given up, I really would say that you are missing some excellent football. We've got a team who scrap for everything and for each other, playing with great technique.
I'm off to get some beer. Feeling absolutely fucking wonderful this evening after seeing us tear Sheff Utd a new one.

True. People moan about us 'letting them back in the game' and being sloppy and so on but they tend to forget there are actually two teams on the pitch.

The move for our third goal went from turnbull in our left back position, ended up with Byrne in their left back position, to Thompson in the centre of the park before getting to smith then obika. It lasted about two minutes, and I don't think Sheffield United touched the ball. Brilliant stuff

In relation to the crowd....£27 in the side stands is just too much, many people have not had a pay rise for years and living costs generally are rising.

Further, what goon at the FL came up with playing 2 home games in week crap.....as Audrey pointed out, take the missus Tuesday and Sat and that's £100 blown before any petrol, beer etc are factored in.

I'd imagine a bit of research might show that gates are down across the whole FL this season.

Yes, it's too much, but it was no different last season (apart from a couple of quid).

The missing 1000 or so must be previous ST holders who dont like forking out real money every week.

The club needs to address this - and quickly

Aside from a slightly nervy 10 mins or so when Sheff Utd got themselves back in it, that was a thoroughly enjoyable game.

Our passing and play at times was absolutely superb.  Excellent team play across the board.  We honestly could have had 3 or 4 more goals.  Also good to see that when Sheff Utd pulled it back, we didn't buckle and went on to score 2 more.

It's a shame about the crowd, but very few fairweather fans are going to pay £27 to watch a league 1 game.  I think I remember reading that season tickets were down by about 1500 on last season, but not sure if that was the final figure.  The club needs to look at doing half season tickets and probably need to offer them on 0% interest to try and get some of those that decided not to renew back through the door.

I mentioned at the start of the season about all the other local clubs offering 6 match flexi tickets. After emailing the club they said it was under consideration and something they could look at. I think its about time they put the wheels in motion.

Best game I've seen for a while, we were awesome for the majority of it. Seems that some around where I sit have chosen Brad Smith as this season's scapegoat,  clueless cunts. 62% possession!

He really hasn't played that well since he arrived...but we shouldnt be targeting our players.

He goes on some great runs and is capable of beating the defender,  but his crosses are more often than not underhit or overhit.

Great game. Great performance. Great result.

For the 1000+ Town fans who have decided not to attend this season - shame on you.

This is the best football you can expect to see at this level - and probably above.

If this result does not get the fuckers back when we  play Preston, I despair.

Spot on ....
That bit of skill from Kasim to set ip the 5th !!!

Took a Sunderland fan with me today.
Totally impressed reckoned the football was great...he even commented on the crowd.

When we were both in the premier league we had a bigger average attendance than them for the season -fact so they can stick that in their pipe.
Bit nerdy of me but that didn't ring true so I cheked and Sheff Utd averaged 19,000 + to our 15,000.

Our average gate did better Saints, QPR, Oldham, Coventry and Wimbledon to be fair and only Man Utd, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle and Arsenal doubled our average gate...

We are massive.

Haven't read back.

That will make a few people take note....

Dongs had a good result but Crewe are at the minute shit.....Blades are not.

We nearly 'did a Swindon' and fucked it up but won through in the end.

Kasims shimmy was a joy to behold for that 5th goal.two defenders running in to each other.

Smith cutting in is frightening to see....if he could cross he would be defo premier player.

Looking forward to Tuesday night.

Shit gate but it looked as if there were more to me....

League One always gets these angsty fans of clubs who aren't usually playing in the 3rd tier in modern times.

Man City, Leeds, Leicester, Southampton, Wednesday, Charlton, Norwich, Forest, QPR... and Bristol City (in their minds anyway).

Once things get tight then people pick and choose....I'm sure those prices have something to do with it..

We're Town not Palace. The only thing that has any right to be played when we score is the old railway hooter. We should also come out to the sound of it , followed by a bit of XTC. Its been said before. maybe this lot will listen. At least Fanfare for the Common Man is a bit of homage to the past.

Cringeworthy and embarrassing is just the start of it, that fucking Rocking Robin dancing to a stadium that is only 5% full is a load of shit, and then lauded by that twat Stuart Morse!!  Back in the days the atmosphere in the ground would be building from about 2-30 pm, nowadays the ground is almost empty then, no singing before the game at all - that music and those announcers have a lot to answer for!!  Very quiet at the start today but at least the team gave us something to sing and cheer about, bloody good performance and how we cannot attract more fans with performances like that only the board knows, with the stupid pricing system!!

I've started sitting down early when we score a goal. I refuse to encourage them with that bloody post-goal music.

As for the announcer, it's a football team, not a boxing match FFS - if he was there to announce teams and get people revved up for the kick off then that'd be fine, but we've just sat and watched the bloody match we don't need a summation of it thanks. The whole PA system needs turning down too.

Keep Rockin' Robin though, the confusion he draws on the faces of away fans is brilliant - although the whole thing could be a little shorter.

I fully understand the picking and choosing of games - hell, I did that last season - but if you are going to do that I would have thought yesterday's game was one of the 'must see' ones.

There seems to be 3 'sorts' of fans

Those that go

Those that want to go but because of circumstances cannot attend - distance, work, cash (lack of) etc

Those who could go but choose not to for whatever reason

Their forum is in meltdown atm, always nice to read things like that after a win!

Someone should mention to them that their away kit was the Adidas template of our last season's home shirt...and that Carlos Tevez is a great player !!

Going back to yesterday's game, my MoM was Louis T. His run's were causing meyhem down the middle, but he needs to improve his goal celeb. Hopefully he'll score more goals to practice that !!

If Obika put his two efforts on target in the forst half, the game should've been sorted at half time, but we are Swindon, and we don't like doing things easy.

Title: Re: Swindon Town v Sheffield United Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shauns on Sunday, September 21, 2014, 14:23:02
Hi all, grab a coffee…it’s a long one!

I hop on this forum now and again just to get a fans perspective on things at the club,

I’m Shaun , the 2nd match day announcer at the club and have been for almost 10 seasons. I just wanted to give some input into a few things that have come up on the forum and hopefully answer any questions and hopefully have some positive stuff to take back to the club for match days.

Please take note that I am in no way employed by STFC so any views etc.: is not that of an official nature from the club.

Firstly, lets head back to the start of the season with two issues, which came up on another thread.

Scoreboard…Yes, we were without the scoreboard at the start of the season as I understand it took some time to have a custom part made and shipped in time.

The fault was found back end of last season and this was quickly put in motion. I understand that the club had to wait for an overseas supplier to sort this and that was where the hold up was.
The club (despite other more pressing issues during the summer) did all they could and although we missed a few games without it – the club did get it sorted. One job fixed.

PA system. Its no big secret that the stadium PA system has not been great for years and although many owners have tried fixing things, there was never a long term plan. Towards the end of last season, the “newer system” installed when the DR was built in the 90’s gradually began to deteriorate.

I began discussions with the club who had (through previous management) had quotes to replace various speakers around the stadium. Without going into too much detail the current design / layout of how the system works is complex. Its not a case of a couple of cables connected to some amps and speakers.

Through my work, I contacted EV audio,  that met with the club and I during the summer and we looked at bringing EV on board to provide all the new amps and speakers and some clever boxes and bits to get the DR up and running again.

We also looked at other long-term options as well.

The important thing was to have a manufacturer on board who had some excellent quality equipment, would dedicate their time and effort into the project and also, more importantly, would supply all the kit at cost thus saving the club a great deal of money.  Needless to say the wheels were in motion.  I gave up many many hours to help with the project, which included the install of the new kit.

A local paper then detailed a very interesting front page with all sorts of speculation and rumours regarding the PA, however the refurb process had already started so for me personally, it was a non-story.

(For those that are remotely interested, the replacement speakers in the DR were to be made in Germany and had to adhere to both BS / FL and IP standards. This would take a few days.)

In summary, the project was done within the time scale and deadline given. The DR has a new front of house PA system, with a long term plan and view to gradually update additional speakers in the concourse areas and TE / Arkells.

The other positive was that there was no major cost to the club meaning the money saved can be used in other areas – you get my drift…!

Steve Anderson and the chairman worked really hard on the project. One thing I have learnt from these guys is that when they say they will do something, they really do. Personally, I have not had that many dealing with Steve or Lee, but they are 100% genuine, passionate people, and men of their words. Scoreboard, sorted, PA in DR, sorted…. etc.:

I have had some feedback that it’s a tad loud and we are making some tweaks on the system to ensure an excellent overall volume.

Moving onto match days…

Pre match music.

I know this will open a can of worms as music is very selective to opinion!

The music pre 3pm is a mixture of popular music that you would be hearing on the radio, targeted at 17-34.

A few oldie tracks are thrown in as well and this is the same formula for many clubs up and down the country. It’s not to everyone’s liking and not the easiest thing to programe when we have such a diverse age range at the club.

On the whole, the feedback is usually positive, although some younger fans want drum and bass, some older fans want more 70’s and 80’s music.
We will never please every single fan and like I say, it’s the same formula at other clubs.
Where this isn’t the case, fans are in the stadium way before 2.30pm and sing – and the PA being at a very low level.

Nothing is set in stone, so I invite any constructive comments  / requests and thoughts about the music and take this to the club. ☺

Walk out music.

That old chestnut.! I understand and if memory serves right - that many years ago, Fanfare for the common man (ELP) was used for the player’s entrance.
At some point, this was then replaced by somebody at the club to UB40. Feedback during last season was a 50/50 split, that some fans wanted ELP and 50% wanted UB40.
From that feedback, we do both to try and keep everyone happy. I read the comments regarding introducing the old railway hooter and then playing ELP, which sounds great – if everyone wants that. I have original recording of the railway hooter and will gladly dig it out and use it on match days.

Let me know your thoughts and I can sort this.

3) Goal music – personally (yes, that’s my own personal opinion) it doesn’t work for me;
This was introduced a few years back as it worked at other clubs. Previous management told me that the club had some sort of connection in the 60’s with Glad all over – hence that being used.

I also remember that a few years ago, certain players had specific music for when they scored. No reason why this can’t happen so I again invite your feedback and ill take this to the club.

Some of you will be aware that on match days, there are two of us. I deal with housekeeping on pitch side, whilst Stuart (who is a long-term passionate town fan) sits at the back of the Arkells and deals with the sound desk and team news. Stuart has a 150 mile round trip and is a town fan through and through, ……Yes, he gets over excited sometimes, but that’s his passion showing through  - I have given him a nudge now and again to relax more on the mic and now the PA works in the DR that’s been taken on board.!

I’ve been called a lot of things on this forum, so sorry if I have offended or upset anyone. My comment yesterday at halftime when I said “some awesome skill in the first half” was an off the cuff comment but that’s what I thought. Yesterday was great to watch and technically impressive from the lads.

The Robin. – Love it or hate him? Whilst I have no control, I will again take comments on board and sit down with the club. Yes, not always a “grown ups” favorite but the kids love him and he usually raises a smile or two. Again, behind the scenes, the robin works hard, outside of match days in schools, hospitals etc.: in his own time. Another true town fan.

I hope that clears a few things up.

I cant change low crowds or get thousands in their seats at 2pm but if there are a few tweaks I can deliver to make the match day experience better then let me know and I will take it to the powers that be.

I’m a fan too and want what’s best for the club and its fans.  Thanks for taking the time to read this. I am always available either in person or phone  / email or post here –

All the best   - come on you reds!

I think the railway works hooter would bring a (probably) unique identity to Swindon's matchday experience.

Some just wouldn't 'get it' though.

For me, anything that is unique to Swindon will do fine. So for those of a certain age, the lives of many in the town were governed by the hooter. People would say '2nd hooter's gone, better get a move on'. You didn't need a clock.

So wouldn't it be great that a decent sized area of town would know the Town had scored a goal when they heard the hooter go off? I appreciate the decible level would be a fraction of the old 'real' thing, of course, and maybe night-time would need to be quieter.

As for lead out music, surely it's not beyond the whit of man, or XTC anyway, to do a re-write of Senses Working Overtime. Blimey, would've been great yesterday - 'We've got 1-2-3-4-5', etc etc, at the end of the match.

Actually, no goal music would be best, just a giant blast on the hooter.

"targeted at 17-34"!!  What a complete load of tosh, take a look at the average of the support, the 17-34 brigade at still in the pub at 2-50, the older ones are just sat there looking glum faced at the crap forced down their throats from YOUR choice of music (at least I assume it is your choice, cannot think the club would insist on that crap you play!).  Rocking Robin is a big embarrassment in my opinion, no need of his antics on the pitch, of course he should be kept and go around the ground here the kids can have their selfies taken etc., but the haka??

I'd personally do away with music after goals all together, and also do away with the 'Rockin Robin Haka' obviously, keep him for the kids as is said above, but at 2:45 you would hope there is bit of an atmosphere building (not recently mind) but I don't think your going to get that whilst watching a robin dance around, that we've all seen 100 times before.

3) Goal music – personally (yes, that’s my own personal opinion) it doesn’t work for me;
This was introduced a few years back as it worked at other clubs. Previous management told me that the club had some sort of connection in the 60’s with Glad all over – hence that being used.

Hate the goal music
Back in the days we had atmosphere, straight after a goal was the best time to have a pop at the visiting fans
That tra la la fuck off chant is surely derived from a piece of music  :hmmm:
Perhaps play that  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

As for prematch well always gonna be a matter of choice and as ronnie stated hardly anyone of the age group you are targeting is in the ground at that time anyway

But pls rein in the over enthusiastic increase in volume when reading out the team - esp the earlier readouts when no one in the ground - not as if the players names are greeted with a massive cheer these days ( never used to be shouted out so loud in the days they were cheered )

And as many have stated the haka MUST go - embarrassing and a mood killer. Have no doubt the kids love him - just not on the pitch at 2.45

Shauns, thanks for taking the time to explain everything.  It's appreciated.  Yes, you will never please everyone and, with that being the case, it's probably best to cater for the younger, paying public because they are the future (I am an oldie) and should be the target audience.

I'm old enough to remember "Glad All Over" as the goal celebration from 50 odd years ago - and that's where it should have been left! It goes on too long, it's too loud and it drowns out the crowd noise of people celebrating the goal. And whichever of you two it is who does the ridiculously loud "GOOOOOAAAAAL NUUUUMMMMBBBBER ONE, SCORRRRRED BYYYYY PLAYER NUUUUUMMMMMBBBER etc" thing should please stop it now.  It's the height of naffness.  Something more subtle would be a good idea.  Give it some thought.

The UB40 version of "Can't help falling..." is truly awful.  I'd rather not have that song at all, but if we must have it, please play a better version ie Elvis Presley.

As for our friend the feathered fucknugget, we appreciate that the little ones like him and he does a good job with them but the so-called Hakka just goes on too long.  It needs rethinking ie binning.

Thanks for all your efforts getting the PA fixed.

Honestly think you are buggered whatever you do now. Personally hate music at goals, then I hate the fact its Palace song. But I guarantee if you were to stop playing it there would be as many people moaning it had gone.

Yep, the goal music does unfortunately seem pretty popular within the DRS, a pretty high % seem to love it.

Rockin Robin is great for inacting with the kids and that should be encouraged but just keep him off the pitch, the haka is cringeworthy and barely raises any appaulase. Any novelty that might have existed wore off seasons ago.

Music tastes are far too selective to please any majority so might as well leave pre-march stuff as it is.

I don't really care about the pre-match music, same with half time.

'Glad all over' gets on my wick though, Let the crowd celebrate when we've scored. I really don't think we need an orchestrated singalong at that point.  It's all too 'Crystal Palace' for me anyway. If we're going to borrow anything from them, see if we can get a couple of the Crystals in pre-match. that might get people in earlier :)   I didn't like 'The mess around' when we'd won a couple of seasons ago either.  Glad that's stopped.

I do like the idea of the railway hooter and a bit of XTC when we run out though.

As for Rocking Robin. It's bizarre enough to be worth keeping.

No haka please, keep robin for the kids around the ground as they love it (my little cousin was laughing her head off with him last week). No goal music, atmosphere after scoring evaporates because of it.

Love "Glad All Over" as does the majority of the DRS it seems as well. We do have some infinity with this tune as well as used it ion the mid 60s.

Not bothered about Rockin Robin or the PA systems it is nice to be able to hear it for a change which we have not in the DRS for many years.

Getting rid of the goal music is the absolute number 1 thing that needs to happen, the fact it is 'glad all over' is even worse. The horn is a much better idea.

Don't care about robin, he's for the kids.

Prematch music for 17-34 year olds makes no sense when they're all the pub and it's only kids and OAPs in the ground at 2pm.

Also the "hooter" idea is just daft. The majority will not remember it and for those that do will only associate it with getting back to work! I don't see how it can be related to any kind of celebration.

3) Goal music – personally (yes, that’s my own personal opinion) it doesn’t work for me;
This was introduced a few years back as it worked at other clubs.

Well done You.
Top post.

Why not start playing some really motivational music when we attack too. And we could pipe some booing and hissing through the speakers when the visitors get a throw in eh.

It's no big mystery why crowds are down. If you get rid of the cringeworthy fucking goal music, they will come.

It isn't the tune itself, its the fact music blares out drowning out the crowd immediately after we score. It's insulting. I know for a fact fans are staying away because of it.  >:(

right so crowds are down just because of the goal music? Don't buy that one I'm afraid. We have used it for 3 seasons and crowds were ok last year.

The majority of the DRS seem to love it- as someone else said getting rid would leave more people complaining.

Though quite why anyone would moan about something so trivial beats me- we could be Salisbury/Hereford fans.

We were amazing yesterday and rocking robin, UB40, The Dave Clark 5, an announcer on speed, the too loud tannoy, no chocolate bars in The DRS, none of that really matters to me.

Feel really sorry for the PA guy who came on here- they do a fab job and the criticism is unfair.

Can't agree more. The football is phenomenal and so is the general feeling around the club. This year has the potential to be incredible. The only hurdle we need to get over is the January window...

Only then can we start to really dream, cause at this point it could all go tits up. But with how we're becoming sustainable, I can't see anyone wanting to leave in the middle of this season. It has so much potential and they're all best friends so they won't want to leave eachother now when they feel they might have the chance to take Swindon into the Championship. BUZZZINNNGGGGGG.

In fact, apart from the 10 minutes where Sheff realised they were there to stick the ball in the onion bag, all our lot looked good. Brad Smith hit a few wayward lofted crosses, but his runs and low crosses across the box were very dangerous. Glad to see him have a good game.

I dont completely despise Glad all over, but would prefer it if it was gone. Like many would prefer it if the announcing was reigned in a little and post goal music cut out completely. Would be good to have some XTC as the entrance music (or goal music if we must have some) and the hooter.

I'll add my appreciation for the PA explanation post.

No thanks to 'glad all over' and yes please to XTC / hooter stuff.  Red Brick Dream - as previously suggested, to kick things off would be just fine.

And if some don't 'get it', as mentioned earlier...at least it's ours...

I splashed my pants with white wee wee when Kasim strolled passed those two defenders and pulled it back for Louis. We really did play some great football yesterday.

Well done for the post explaining the PA - it's good to see people at the club actually take notice of the TEF sometimes (I understand you're a volunteer, but still), and it can only lead to something constructive (well, probably, after us grumpy tossers with nothing better to moan about and a nice safe keyboard to hide behind are done with our griping).

Could one of the mods split the PA stuff into a separate thread? Ta.

I've re-watched Kasim's assist umpteen times today and it just makes him look better and better. I was rather confused by 'Wayne' Foderingham's 'fumble' for their second as well on the official highlights.

I'm not going anymore due to no paper in the toilets to dry my hands.
FFS what ever next.
I watch Swindon because I support my club. Don't give a damn for all the other issues.

At least those moaning about the music are actually at the game instead of going to watch the egg chasers!

I'd rather fans were moaning about how loud the PA is than all the whingy shit about the board and team in the summer, which thankfully has been put to bed.

Sound guy - do whatever the fuck you want. It's your job, no fucker here tried to go for it, it's yours. You're never gonna please everyone and unfortunately we have a bunch of moany cunts as supporters, but who gives a shit about them, they'd moan if you played their favourite song on repeat.

And seriously, who the fuck said people are staying away because of goal music!? No. Just no. And if they are, good fucking riddance. After a performance like Saturdays I wouldnt care if the goal music was Justin Bieber and we walked out to Cheeky Girls.

Well said , who cares what the music is if we keep playing like that. It is up to all of us to keep harping on to expired fans that this is the best football being played since the Hoddle days. Hopefully the club will see a bit of sense and offer a couple of inducements before Xmas like kid for a quid or a tenner off all around the ground and lets see if the stay aways are good for there word.

Fair play fot the post from the PA guy, but WTF...

Have a word with yourselves people, 80% bollocks has just turned into 99% bollocks in this thread.  We could have One Direction, Oasis and ACDC performing live before the game and somebody would still moan.

You are there to watch football, which at the moment is good entertainment so what does it matter what happens before the match?  The goal music is subjective so will never please everyone but not going because of it?  Oh dear...

The biggest problem is the club do not do nearly enough to promote the ticket offers. If a promotion is run, it almost always ends up benefiting the walk ups who come to the games anyway, and is often a nice surprise to them as they buy at whatever the price is.

I know advertising costs money, but surely you have to speculate to accumulate. What other methods can the club use to get their message across?

The cheapest way to get people in, is to offer some kind of incentive to existing ST holders who refer new customers through the turnstile. That way the club get bums on seats, the ST holders don't feel pissed off that the walk ups get preferential treatment and they get something in return for helping get people through the door, whether it be myworld points or a free shirt or something similar.

My suggestions....

Rocking Robin - if he has to do anything then perhaps the haka could be scrapped,  then he could come on at half time for the nest egg thingy, perhaps he could lay an egg on the centre circle with a number on it?

Goal music - get rid, no reason for it (along with the US boxing announcer style drawn out speak)

Pre match music - get rid of all the 30+ year old vinyl, along with the turntable. Maybe have a fan text in for matchday requests.

Have the robinettes disbanded?

This is the matchday thread and should be about the match, not the peripheral bollocks.

Thompson's run for the first and Yaser's skill for the 2nd were quality.  I must admit it felt weird when I heard the commentator on the FL show say on the build up to the first goal, Thompson, who is on loan from Norwich.  Obviously true, but it just didn't sound right...

Why not create some extra revenue and let fans bid for and then choose their own goal music they want to hear each week.

You could also do the same for the teams coming out.

You’d have some interesting choices some weeks.

If we diverted the shirt sponsor money and threw in 10 quid each to this, we could have both teams coming out to Frigging in the Rigging.

Me for a start, I hate all of them. Personally I don't mind Glad All Over if we have to have music being played to celebrate goals, but I'd rather we didn't have anything as it kills fans' chanting to celebrate, guarantees that there's a short blast of noise, then silence when the music stops. It's a tiny bit irritating.

But, really, in the grand scheme of things, I'm not that bothered. Was quite happy to be able to Dad Dance to "Glad All Over" 5 times on Saturday. That was the main thing, we got to do it (dance badly, clap along, try to sing over it, moan about "that bloody music again", whatever it is you do) 5 times and really I should have been embarrassing my son 7 or 8 times the way we played. Like Berni said, that, and just the whole way we're carving teams open at the moment, is what I pay to see. Loving it at the moment.

Well I paid £ 27.00 and it was certainly worth it - can`t remember the last time I enjoyed a game so much. What a difference to the Crewe game - unbelievable. I will be back and as I don`t have a season ticket will have to pay whatever it costs. I would buy a season ticket if I thought I would watch that standard more often than not and I reckon I am not alone. I think the people will drift back if this continues in a similar vein. All credit to Cooper / Power - don`t think anyone expected this beginning of the season. We are a small club and more than likely will always be....enjoy it whilst its still here I say. I am glad all over......
