Title: The Gaffer
Post by: Abrahammer on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, 07:54:53
It's about time Cooper started getting the credit he is due. He has done a great job in his time here.

Pushing for the playoffs last year and so far a great start based on performances this season. All this on a reduced budget, having to work with a small squad whilst implementing a new style of play.

A job well done so far.

The start of last season saw us playing some good stuff, but am I right in thinking it was nowhere as good as what we have served up this season so far?

Seems so to me.

If he can sort out our play in the final third we are going to give a lot of teams real trouble this season. We play some lovely stuff and keep the ball well, but more often than not we fail to make as many chances as I think our play warrants.

If it clicks, we are going to give some teams a real hiding. Fair play to Cooper to play the way we do. I have slight concerns about it when the weather gets colder and the pitches get worse and its harder to keep the ball.

We played some cracking football last year at times, having said that, it was sometimes frustrating to watch tippy-tappy football that was going nowhere and not creating any chances.
He's clearly worked with them to keep the nice, passing football, but we now have a cutting edge up front, creating more chances and are getting the ball into the box a lot quicker.

Byrne has been my player of the season so far, what a transformation from last season, he looks confident. He's quick, skilful and always looking for the ball and generally a handful for fullbacks.

Fair play to Coops, he certainly deserves more credit than he gets.

I'd say Cooper is doing OK....that's not damning with faint praise...but rather an acknowledgement that the tough bit is yet to come.

Which will be more clearly shown, as the season unfolds and the impact of our small playing budget gets tested   For me, still, given the likely difficulties that lay ahead keeping us in Div 3 at season's end will be a decent achievement worthy of credit.

To think he was lambasted by Peterborough fans when he got the job on a permanent basis last season.

They couldn't help but say that he was a 'hoofball' manager, ironically, the only goal of the game that day was route one, and yes, it was Peterborough who scored it!

Great praise is needed, he's doing a sterling job with the resources he's got to work with.

Fucked me off numerous times.

Got the job by default.

Worked miracles this season with what he's been given....I was dreading this season.

Hopefully we can continue with the form we have....a few games don't make a season.

I think he's doing a really good job. Last season there were times when he was too negative - can't be accused of that this season. Also we really had a bad run last year that we appeared to have lucked out of at City away. Hopefully we won;t find out this season how we'd react. I also think he's learned to lighten up a bit with the press.
Last season he knew he was lucky to get the gig and probably reacted a bit to criticism. This season he deserves the gig.
Overall, given what we've got its very difficult to see anyone doing better.
What he has built is a team  - not a collection of individuals.

Yeh he's doing well, let's not forget Luke Williams tho who is king of tippy tappy football, good job sofar long way to go, hope we got a plan B this year.

Doing a superb job with the resources given. Now if he would just spend a bit of time working on crossing and corners ...

Some over the top stuff here but he's doing a decent job, yes.

Agreed. Good job given how low our expectations were and are - worthy of praise. No more than that.... We're four games in and out of the cup (no matter how good we looked in sustained spells). Remember Brighton left out arguably their first choice keeper, Centre back, creative player and striker last night.

He still has some way to go with the media. Seems to have a scepticism of them. He'd do well to realise that his interaction with them will contribute (rightly or wrongly) a long way to his popularity with fans. I also have my doubts that "every Brighton player" , for example, really did come up to him and tell him how brilliant we were, nor that they did more work preparing for us than a Championship game.

If he was a mental Italian or a big name former professional people would be worshipping him.

He's done a fantastic job with very tight constraints but has not really achieved anything yet.

Personally I don't find his media approach awkward or miserable, I like the way he deflects praise onto his players instead of taking credit for everything.

Fair enough. I don't necessarily hear it like that but maybe you're right. If I was an experienced journalist like Andrew Hawes though, there are some responses he gets that come across as more than a little terse and disrespectful.

All that said, I'd take sceptical and talented over talentless and media savvy.

I think he's quite direct and blunt  but not in a disrespectful manner

As far as I'm concerned, he always answers every single question he's asked with a straight answer. I don't suppose that's the British way is it? Directness is seen as rudeness. I'm fine with it though.

And Andrew Hawes asks some fairly dumb questions at times. Like after winning the first two games of the season..."Are you happy with the start to the season?"...the fuck?? ???

People take 'to the point' as offensive these days.

Personally I like his approach.

I disagree..... However ..he seems to have lightened up a bit and long may that continue.

Got crucified at Peterborough but that's not my/our fault.

I think Cooper is doing a great job.

I took an Italian friend on Tuesday who has watched Town about five times over the past five or so years, so including Wilson and di Canio teams. He thought this was the best Town team he's seen so far.

After Tuesday, my old man, who's been watching Town since the 1940s, said that this is the best passing Town team he's ever seen. He's thoroughly enjoying the quality of football and the effort put in, regardless of results.

Better even than the Hoddle side of 1992/93?!  Praise indeed.

I'd be surprised.
Hoddle has to be one of the best passers of the ball in football, ever.

...and of course you don't get points for passing!!!!

I like Cooper, I like the team, it's coming on brilliantly considering the amount that's been spent on it. No major 'marquee' players, bar possibly Luongo and a couple of remnants from the previous era (Wes and Andy Williams), but a squad which plays attractive football and, as someone said earlier, have come on from tippy-tappying it around to some people's boredom last season to playing some more direct football.

If we start converting even a quarter of the chances we make and get a properly decent centre-back or two in then we would have a good chance of going up this year, despite the Reg-isms of it being good for us to 'just stay in the division'.

Credit where it's due, Cooper is doing a good job and I for one am happy we have him and not some horrible proponent of hoofball.

Should never have got the job, but very glad he did.

He's done extremely well with the resources to hand this season, it is of course early days but its looking good right now.

He's talking about the team DV not an individual player (As great as Glenn was!). It's undoubtedly the best passing side since Hoddle's team although I seem to remember Ossie's team before that being particularly good too. I was only a nipper though so hard to compare really. I would say though that considering we're a tier below those sides it's pretty good to see a league one side pass it so well.

The 89/90 team under Ardiles played the best passing football as a team, Hoddle's team were a little better for having him in it.  Just watch the play off final against Sunderland, passed them off the park.

I agree with that, i remember the 89/90 team as the best team i've seen.

That was easily the best 90 minute performance I've witnessed from a Town team. The current lot compare pretty favourably though.
