Title: Ice Bucket Challenge
Post by: JoeMezz on Sunday, August 24, 2014, 22:29:01
This is starting to get boring now but I laughed when I saw a YouTube video of PDC doing it after Alan Connell nominated him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=251G4vg4flA

Thought he wasn't allowed ice in his drinks? :pint: :D

I think the forum members should post their videos here after they have been nominated.

Shortest lived lame celeb thing ever hopefully.

Hopefully awareness of certain diseases, charities and charity donations isn't so short lived. I wouldn't have donated to MNDA if this campaign hadn't taken place if I was to be entirely honest.

This is what the challenge is about:

http://www.mndassociation.org/news-and-events/Latest+News/join-in-and-take-the-ice-bucket-challenge-today

I've seen plenty of videos of the challenge and as a result I have learned more about ALS/MND and the associated charities and made a donation.

To clarify my earlier point: I do feel sometimes the message/point can get a bit lost with these types of challenges and chain nomination things. Having them all in a single thread could just turn it into a bit of a forum competition rather than focussing on the more important part. I'm perfectly happy just to look through my facebook news feed at the various videos of people doing the challenge without looking at more on here. I'm probably just a bit of a stick in the mud and a massive hypocrite for that point of view though :)

Some red-trouser wearing cunts came up to me in the pub the other night and asked if they could have the ice bucket so they could do this. At which point I asked them if they knew what it was about, to which they kind of shrugged their shoulders.

This is what annoys me a little - people doing it just to be trendy or look #cool rather than actually giving a toss about the disease and the charitable aspect of the thing.

Not that I'm saying it's all bollocks, the amount of money and coverage that has been raised is brilliant.

The only reason Si won't post his video is because he did it naked.

'Id like to nominate Harry Redknapp, Jeremy Wray...and Robbie Williams'

Brilliant. I'm finding this whole thing surprisingly not annoying considering I'm usually a massive cynic, most likely because all my friends actually are donating and it's clearly helping. Oh, and because my girlfriend has been nominated and really, really doesn't want to do it.

It is dumb. But it's a bit of fun and at the end of the day some worthy charities are getting funds they wouldn't normally get.

So no harm done.

Di Canio does that every day anyway. Well, it is a night normally. But with nails, instead of ice. And he's naked, except for a loin cloth, and a clan hood.

Why are people getting so pissed off about it. Its harmless and its not hurting anyone. If someone wants to film themselves tipping ice over them then whats the big deal. If the donate to a charity after doing it, then thats great.
Some people just can't help but have a moan.

Was meant to be doing it today but after a quick look at the weather I might try and get an extension on the 24 hour rule.

Was nominated yesterday so will be doing it later
Donating also.

As long as raises awareness it can't be a bad thing.
Plus have witnessed some epic fails and some celebs taking part I wouldn't have thought would, Steven Kings for one.

I did it and it took minutes.

It raised three quid for (in my case) Mac cancer nurses and it only impacted my friends on FB.

Compare that to Comic Relief, Children in need, Sport Relief...,blah, blah fucking blah. That goes on for fucking weeks now...part funded by us all, if we agree with it or not...

Wasnt happy when I found out Jutty pissed in the bucket.

Yeah. You wouldn't want to do it in this weather, you'd get cold and wet.

Haha as if. Chances are most TEF members can view it online anyway.  The video is shared with friends of friends. I was pretty gutted that idea raised zero extra donations :(

This became a farce days ago. People are just using it as an excuse to throw water over each other.
I am sure the majority don't donate a penny to the cause. Glad I don't have facebook as this is all over it apparently.

If you're not on Facebook how do you know? From what I have seen the majority are actually donating and that is also evidenced if you look at (for example): https://www.justgiving.com/icebucket4mnd/

That's just shy of £3m if you include gift aid. When I did the challenge at the weekend that figure was £100k. It's hardly a farce when you look at it like that.
I do agree a lot of the time people don't convey the right message or give details of how to donate, a bit like the no make up selfie thing. On the whole it's been a bit better this time, but I have seen stuff labelled ‘here’s my ALS Ice Bucket Challenge’ and then telling people to text the donation number for Macmillan. As long as charities benefit I guess we shouldn't protest too much.

my Mrs and daughter spend their time on Facebook giggling and watching the videos of it. They did it too.
It's raising money so good I suppose but my point still stands. 3mill ain't a lot considering how many people are doing it, is it?

I shirked my nomination. I've nothing against what it stands for, but I don't need what is essentially a viral marketing campaign to tell me to make a donation to charity.

To be fair I've only quoted the figures from one charity. I've seen a recent survey suggested 56% who did the challenge didn't donate which certainly backs up what you and I have both said in earlier posts. I do know people have donated who haven't or won't be doing the challenge as well so that would skew any statistics.

The worst part is that it's sad those who have donated feel the need to prove they have done so (I'm included in that too as I posted a screenshot of my donation text). It's forced, but I wouldn't say it's a farce, not by a long way.

Was going to renege on my earliest comment and suggets posting your videos on here as arriba is missing out on all of the fun ;)

Isn't that one of the most self-indulgent nonsense on Facebook? AKA "Worst day ever, please friends ask me why and then I can feel loved and important" The answer is always something like "I stub my toe".
