There was a time that English fans would not be cheering Germany to win but I think with what they done against Brazil has won them a bit more respect

Argies for me.

The Hun have done nothing wrong and are worthy favourites but I do like a superstar that is humble so it's Messi and his mates I'll be cheering on

Football should be about teamwork. Germany is the best team by a mile. Therefore Germany get my vote.

We (England) used to be great rivals to the Germans. Now they are streets ahead. The Bundesliga is great without them wittering on about it being the greatest league in the world and you have to admire their international team, no 'superstars', but a great team ethic.

For me I want Germany to win, and handsomely.

The longer it stays 0-0 the more worried I'd be given Argentinas defensive tactics, that they'd nick one.
Our midfield I believe is too strong to keep quiet, however

2-1 with Thomas Müller winning the golden boot

The Argentinian fans have been my favourite at this tournament (seen here in a Brazilian shopping centre)

But I still want the Germans to win.

5/1 Germany, 7/1 Argentina to win in extra time or pens.

I have a load of Scottish friends and the irony of them continually calling robben a cheat when they hold maradona on a pedestal for the hand of god is pretty funny.

kind of want argentina to get revenge.plus muller is my 3rd most hated player of this tournament behind marcelo and robben

Just hoping for a decent game although I have got The Argies in my work sweepstake.
Might do a scorecast on Germany to even it up. Klose first goal and 3-1 .

You put yer left hand in, yer left hand out.....

Come off it Bob footballs full of hypocritical bullshit, why should the scots be immune from that?

Maradona's a legend, would like to see Messi emulate him tonight and in fact go one better, Diego never managed a WC final goal.

Messi is overrated? Ha ha ha. Brilliant.

Tonight came to quality of finishing, Arg had none, Germany had a little, and the little they had was enough.

That said I really enjoyed that final, very enjoyable. Well played Germany, unlucky Argentina.

Always a bit sad when you get to the end of a World Cup, had no kids during SA 2010, wonder what life will be like in 2018.

He genuinely is though. Gets fed chances on a plate at Barca. Not saying he's not world class, because he really is. But goes hiding in games, seems to be most important games too. Not better than Maradona..

Messi had the chance to show he was the best player in the world tonight and came up short.
Compare him to maradona for instance. Not even close.
He is arguably the best player in the world but this was set up for him and he didn't show it.

Title: Re: World Cup final Germany v Argentina

Messi is up there with the best. I just don't think the Argies have developed a system or a team structure that gets the best out of him.  Maradona didn't and neither did Sabella.

Agree with Jan, not over rated IMO. His club record speaks for itself and he had a massive influence on getting a reasonably average team to the final. Not sure who he's over rated by?!

My mind can't help but drift back to a Euro u 21 final 5 years ago. England got mullered by the Hun, but had been quite impressive in getting to the final.

Germany U21: Neuer, Beck, Howedes, Boateng, Boenisch, Hummels (Aogo 83), Johnson (Schwaab 68), Castro, Khedira, Ozil (Schmelzer 89), Wagner.
Subs Not Used: Fromlowitz, Ebert, Marin, Grote, Adlung, Ben-Hatira, Ede, Sippel.
Goals: Castro 23, Ozil 48, Wagner 79, 84.
Booked: Boenisch, Wagner.
England U21: Loach, Cranie (Gardner 80), Richards, Onuoha (Mancienne 46), Gibbs, Cattermole, Muamba (Rodwell 77), Noble, Milner, Walcott, Johnson.
Subs Not Used: Lewis, Taylor, Stearman, Tomkins, Driver, Rose.

6 Hun, on the original team sheet tonight.

James Milner the only one of ours to make the squad, although I suppose Theo would if he'd been fit.

For me the best 'team' in the tournament take home the spoils.

Messi showed glimpses of brilliance but, like Ronaldo, his club team is better than his International team and he never really looked like the Messi of Barcelona. I thought giving him the golden ball trophy was a bit of a piss-take and felt for him having to go up and collect it (Robben or James Rodriguez for me should have got it).

One of my friends was watching on Copacabana beach and said some of the Argentinians were throwing chairs at the celebrating Germans which is a shame but not altogether surprising.

I keep seeing an awful lot of people saying this is the best WC ever.  The group stages were excellent but there were about 3 good games in the knockouts. I think the shitness of 2010 has distorted things.

France 98 remains the best World Cup I can remember (1990 onwards)

I can see your point, but can't help but think, it's more indicative of how our problem lies with player development around this stage...and you're probably right to infer it's because these sort of lads hit a glass ceiling at Prem clubs.

Yeah, normally the group stages of a competition are full of boring games, followed by excitement in the knockouts, but it's been the other way round this year - I honestly can't think of one boring group game.

I always think it's the other way around....group games are better because early you get a second chance, players are fresher and you get unknowns and underdogs given a it a good go because of the likelihood of only playing a few games.

KO games tend to be cagier, for obvious reasons..

This has been a thoroughly enjoyable WC, but like all modern football, can't really compare to the past....it just is what it is.

TBH I don't care who wins the WC, who is, or isn't, world class.

To me it's no different to watching the PL games on Sky. A few good ones, most are boring pap.

Hopefully this world cup can put to bed the thought that any of our players are near world class or that the England team are anywhere near decent. We've got a lot of work ahead of us but one good thing is that people now have more realistic expectations. Not a bad World Cup overall.

Ironically, there has been talk that Sabella was just a patsy, and he was just doing what Messi wanted anyway.

There was an article over the weekend, about Suarez's move to Barca, and the fact that Barca just do what Messi wants, and that Suarez should get used to playing on the wing (when he's not suspended for biting players) as the team is just set up for making Messi look good.

Messi's body language to me seemed all wrong last night as well. When Mascharano and the manager were doing their team talk on the pitch before extra time, Messi was sauntering around in his own little world not paying any attention. I know he doesn't 'need' to work very hard but if I was a team mate, seeing him barely running whilst I'm working my bollocks off wouldn't auger well. During extra time his 'heat map' probably covered the square root of fuck all.

Finally people seeing that just because of Messi's goal record doesn't mean he can't be criticised. He wasn't even the best Argentinian player, Mascherano was.
