Title: Goodnight Irene
Post by: Ardiles on Saturday, May 3, 2014, 16:44:32
In honour of Bristol Rovers Football Club.  Not quite RIP, but as good as.  A part of me is actually quite sad.

Wonder if they're going to push ahead with that state-of-the-art 20,000 capacity stadium?

Please add your messages of condolence below.

= - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - =

Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

Sometimes I live in the country
Sometimes I live in town
Sometimes I have a great notion
To jump into the river and drown

Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

Quit ramblin' and quit gamblin'
Quit stayin' out late at night
Stay home with your wife and family
Sit down by the fireside bright

Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

I asked your mother for you
She told me you was too young
I wished to God I'd never seen your face
I's sorry you ever was born

Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

I love Irene, God knows I do
I'll love her till the seas run dry
And if Irene turns her back on me
I'd take morphine and die

Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

You cause me to weep, you cause me to mourn
You cause me to leave my home
But the very last words I heard her say
Was "Please sing me one more song"

Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

They might need to reduce the capacity a bit. 2000 should do it.

I'm disappointed...not to have seen a picture of a fully grown Rovers fan balling his eyes out.

I was chatting to a Rovers fan on the train to Swindon and he was telling me about their new stadium. I was shocked when he said it was 25k capacity!

there was a good old sing song in the CG hotel after the game - only heard one song though!!  Instead of "I'll see you in my dreams" they substituted Salisbury for dreams!!

I know it's not very grown up to dance on someone's grave...especially when there are a lot of decent Rovers fans out there.  But to the pack of feral chavs - mostly armed with baseball bats - that invaded the beer garden we were drinking in at the Inn on the Green in Bristol before our game there at the end of the 2006/07 promotion season...how are you feeling now?

Most probably all now crying in to your super strength cider.  That was the most barbaric act of violence I've witnessed in nearly 25 years of watching football.  I'll never forget it.  This is for you.

This.

And all the chavvy tossers who threw seats a season or so later in the Arkells.

Hope they're choking on their cheap cider tonight, and enjoy's their local derby to Forest Green next season.

Yes... On a personal note I've never seen either of the Bristol clubs as rivals, but for the Inn on the Green incident there's much schadenfreude to be had...

Spent the afternoon/evening with 8 Shitty fans at a bbq.

Suffice to say they were fucking happy as Larry (whoever Larry is) and the champagne was flowing freely (which they brought in just in case Rovers got relegated so it certainly wasn't wasted) as were the jokes about Rovers, shitty do really hate them!.....a good time was had by all :)

They spend most of the year telling themselves that they don't care about Rovers and then they get them in the cup.

They're a funny old bunch, City fans. Enjoy rivalries, even if you're not in the same division.

That's an amazing stat.

I see that Rovers joined the League in the same year that we did - in 1920.  Is that just coincidence, or was that just the year that the League was founded?  Were we playing in regionalised competition prior to that?  (One for Reg.  ;) )

Something to do with the Southern League becoming a division, I think?

Nice to see the good folk of Bristol commemorating Rovers' dramatic slide into non-league with a piece of civic water art in the city centre:

Personally I'd have rather seen Cobblers go, as their collusion in keeping Pompey up at our expense in 65 merits a karmic response.

Nevertheless, Rovers fans have been absolute cocks in recent years, so it'll do  :)

It's a main street closed off with a waterslide on it. Crowdfunded, and a ballot for 300 tickets to have a go on it.

I remember back in about 2001, Rovers went down and we just about stayed up. Rovers had a load of games in hand but messed it up.  The City fans put a banner up on a bridge on the M32 saying 'The Gas are down'

I also went to the last game of the season at Stoke and the Bristol City fans put up another banner on the M6 exit saying 'Congratulations Swindon Town' or something like that, the piss taking bastards.

oxford went down that season too. It was a good season considering we finished just above the relegation zone.

I was in the home end for that game. Cash on the turnstile on the night! Tremendous tension and a real nasty atmosphere at the end. I expect it was tenfold last weekend.

Have you lost any points to Wycombe in the last 5 years? Have you been adversely affected by something which you forgot to be arsed about at the time but now it seems really important. Then call clutching at straws direct.

Ummm didn't we have a dodgy sell on clause for Austin where Fitton got a chunk of the money from his sell on. Surely that's technically third party ownership....

I don't know, bringing it into the public eye might put more public pressure on the FA to look at it properly. But this is non-league Bristol Rovers, the public don't care.

and tried and tested at Rovers when Gerry Francis was manager. The player was valued when brought into the club and then when he left. A % of increase went to Francis. It was written into his contract I believe. He did alright at the time.
