Title: Swindon Town v Brentford Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Friday, April 11, 2014, 23:00:19
The Opponent: Brentford

It was a warm London summer’s day, and Brentford’s Braemer Road was bathed in the glow from the rays. Suddenly, Kevin Chippendale noticed something odd in the sky. It was no bird, much too large, and no plane, for it was a creature. Whatever the pedestrian was observing, it somehow resembled a dragon, or more so a griffin, but surely not, and then, rather coincidentally, it soared towards the Green Dragon apartments. Fast forward to February of the next year, a bitterly cold day, and again, Mr Chippendale is strolling through the area, and unexpectedly it’s there again, this time he could make out clearer details, characteristics, such as a long muzzle, dog-like in form but large wings which convinced Kevin that what he was seeing must surely have stemmed from his mind as a hallucination. However, a friend of Kevin’s, named Angela Keyhoe, also spotted the beast, a massive bird-like critter perched near the Watermans Art Centre, and then psychologist John Olssen, whilst jogging near the Thames, had his own sighting.
Suddenly the media flocked upon the scene and programmes such as The Six ‘o Clock Show were quick to cover the story of what would become known as the Brentford Griffin. Many sceptics shouted ‘hoax’ but the snowball effect had gone into motion, locals were seeing things in the sky that either were or weren’t there, phone-in options were given to any witness who’d sighted the monster, and eventually Andrew Collins published The Brentford Griffin: The Truth Behind the Tales. Paranormal researchers were quick to link the sightings to the fact that the local football team, Brentford, had a coat of arms complete with proud griffin, and they also played at Griffin Park, whilst the local public house, The Griffin, was also caught up in the circus. It was as if the town’s symbolic creature had come to life, and the beast, which had been buried deep within the human psyche, was now taking flight.

Of course, when the sightings died down, so did the fuss, convincing many that there was no flying wonder, merely a sum of misinterpretation, hysteria and hoax. However, a Martin Collins mentioned that he’d heard of the beast as far back as the 1950s whilst at school in St John’s which back then was overlooked by Brentford’s football stadium. Legend was rife that a griffin-like creature was brought to the town by King Charles II as a gift for his mistress. However the poor beast fell into the River Brent and washed away, presumed dead. The creature ended up living healthily at the Brentford Eyot. The story doesn’t end here though. Sir Joseph Banks was reported to have brought a griffin back from a Pacific Island when in the company of Captain Cook. The beast was housed at Kew Gardens which was situated across the water from the Eyot, and the two monsters allegedly bred.

Where the opposition gather –

http://beesotted.co.uk/?p=11913

Last 6 – WLDDWW – 2nd on 87 points.

They have served us both – David Ball, Charles Allwright, Baden Herod, John Buttigieg, Alan Connell, Tom Dawson, Jonathann Douglas, Alex Rhodes, Ted Nash. Jimmy Gabriel, Alan Reeves, Freddie Fox, Junior Lewis, Chris Kamara, Jo Kuffor, Les Roberts, Lionel Piggin, Mark McCammon, Harry Morris, Alan McCormack, Fola Onibuje, Jack Price, John Bostock, Deon Burton, Denny Mundee, Dave Partridge, Leigh Mills, Alex McCulloch, Archie Ling, Jack Price, Harry Morris, Mike Grella, Paul Evans, Kevin Deardon, Mike Bull, John Moncur, Nathan Byrne, John Cornwall, Cecil Blakemore, William Kirby, Dean Hooper, Toumani Diagouraga, Glen Cockerill, Simon Cox, Owain Tudur-Jones, Percy Whipp, Bert Young, Andy Rollings, Les Wilkins, Paul Smith, George Rushton, Teddy Ware, Norman Thomson, Ricky Shakes.

The Odds – Swindon 11/4   Draw 12/5   Brentford Evens

The Son Says – For the first time in as long as I can remember he has gone for a 2-2 draw. Don’t think he had a very good day.

The Prediction – Brentford’s away form is a little patchy although their league position can’t be argued with. 3-1 Town with goals from Pritchard (2) and Kasim in front of 8’110, 1112 from London.

And Finally – “I’m not sure what kind of reception I’ll get. If it’s bad I’ll laugh and get on with it because it will never affect me. I would expect boos because if I was a fan I would do the same! You try to get into their heads and make them angry. Swindon’s a superb club. I had a two fantastic years there and would never say a bad word about them. But I play for Brentford now and get paid to do a job for them. There will be no sentimental values come three o’clock on Saturday.” Welcome Back Alan, and its 3.07 by the way.

Looking forward to it today, my last game of the season (unless we make the play offs).

Bringing my mate who works at Yeovil FC today for his first taste of the CG, I will try and make him a Swindon fan!

Should be a good following of Bees today, they have sold about 1,000 with a fair few walk ups so they should have about 1,500 there making hopefully a good atmosphere in a 9,000 crowd.

I think we will probably lose but it will be good abusing Alan Mac for the penalty miss, which is obvious now looking back in hindsight and hopefully Douglas will get sent off.

Loved McCormack when he was here, gave everything in every game and I don't blame him for leaving in all honesty.

A tight game, I don't think i've ever predicted a 0-0 draw before, but reckon this will finish 0-0.

I don't blame him for leaving for probably more money and better prospects, I just blame him for the penalty miss against his future employers.....as I am certain he had already made his mind up to sign for them.

I don't think I would motivate the ex-Swindon players at Brentford by acknowledging their existence.

Won't make a lot of difference as I fear a dicking may be on the cards.

Truth is we fucked him about anyway on a new deal. Jeds version of events and AMs were somewhat different. Looking at the table he made the right choice.

But if he really had agreed a deal before the PO semi, and that influenced his decision in taking a penalty then that would make him a cunt of the very highest order, and in my eyes a form of cheat.

I guess I am a bit less cynical though. I don't think he'd do that - nor Paynter at Wembley for that matter.

In any case, putting one over ex players - Douglas and AM - well of course I do as a fan.

He didn't miss the penalty,he wouldn't take one and that's what pisses a lot of fans off. Back to today's match and with the pressure of play-offs gone,I think we'll win 2-1,Pritchard and Storey

Well said. Dean is a complete cunt but then again most of the Brentford players are. a spiteful, hateful, cheating, whinging bunch of scumbags. I hope we win but I dare say good old clayton will fall over sufficiently to put us down to 10 men and win a penalty.

The result may not have any bearing on which division we play in next season, but every game matters.

Even if it's only to look at players to decide whether we want to keep or replace them for next season.

My player is perfectly on time, which version are you using?

The "DVR" option is about 2 minutes behind, "Old style" is on time.

Smith is getting an awful lot of stick from the crowd.  I feel sorry for the lad to be honest.  He's working hard, but is let down by his first touch.  I've seen far worse performances that haven't received such abuse from our own fans.  Cooper is exposing him by leaving him up front on his own.

 Sweet...puts Brentford in their place.

Oddly probably not getting to the PO's, might be a bit of a help, because we're looking no more than OK, with a bit of potential for next season, but there a still some things to iron out.

Most obviously problems on the road...clearly shown by 1 point v the current bottom 4.  Bit of tinkering in the summer, and we just might have a squad that could push on a level.

A really good win and its good to beat those cheating nasty shitbags. I think the performance of the day has to go to the ref ably assisted by the linos - inept doesn't even begin to cover it. They were shite of epic proportions.
Lots of positives to take from today. We manned the fuck up against a really horrid, nasty bunch of cunts. Louis was excellent and deserved his MOM. JMac in the first half, however, was excellent but faded in the second. Wes made one stonking save but we come to expect it now. The back 3 were excellent. Branco had a slow start but played really well. Troy and stephens really handled themselves well given the constant backing in, elbows and feet left in.
A few negatives though. Luongo is nowhere near the player we had on loan. Byrne was dogshit today. Smith's first touch again was really shite but the ball he put through to Byrne who shanked it wide was very good. He missed the penalty but at least it was on target and the keeper pulled off a good save. Pritchard got the penalty but did very little else and looked pretty disinterested in the second half.
Overall though, well chuffed with that. I'd hate to see Brentforsd every week. I'd be ashamed if I followed a team like that. Talking of which, their support was shite - 1500 mutes.

He was getting shouted at by sections of people in the Arkells to take Smith off.  As per my post during the game, it was very ott and sections of supporters close to me serm to really dislike the lad.   At one point Cooper turned round and effectively told them to shut it. I imagine he was referring to that and the constant heckling every time Smith went for the ball by some supporters.

Fabulous match, whatever you think of Brentford they are a good team, very powerful but today they didn't have too much up front.  Back in February we would have laid down and died but we showed a real desire and character today.  Thought Smith was poor today, early headed chance, missed the pen and seemed to lack confidence - however he put a shift in even if there was no end result.  Plenty of gamesmanship in the run-up to the pen, which resulted in a booking for their centre half.  Could have put him off slightly.  Luongo not at his best, Byrne a bit lightweight - missed two golden opportunities one on one with the keeper.

Chuffed with that result against those cunts - what an unsporting, nasty and horrible club they are - felt our defensive line were brilliant today - need to sign Stephens up for next season, and I thought Branco had a blinder, won everything in the air! Good result today looking at the comments, well done town.

Shut the fuck up....we won today so Cooper is brilliant and last week was all the players fault!

Nice lot of passion shown today and apart from Luongo and Pritchard bottling it, some nice tackles flying in.

Pen was a defo and Alan mac moaned like fuck to lift the crowd. Nice!

Smith was the Scape goat again....pen was too close to the keeper who guessed right....first touch no where near as good as Ranger but what do you expect? Unfair IMO...I will back Cooper on that.

If you were Brentford you would probably feel a draw was deserved after the sitters missed...but we deserved something Boxing Day....so there..

Ref seemed to suddenly lose it but you couldn't argue with the red card..and...no officials were fooled by the diving much to Brentfords ire.....

One up front fucks me off and not playing a front man when they had ten men was madness, even if it was for a few minutes.

Thanks to jutty for presenting me with Coopers autograph....'to the flash...best wishes'

We should be in PO IMO....but there, I've got my ST....lets see what next season brings.

Nearly forgot the great sporting Brentford team after one of ours gets injured and we kick the ball out they take the throw in to one of theirs and play as normal.
Also today showed the good and bad sides of Cooper. On the good side there were a couple of free kicks that had obviously been practiced and nearly came off. On the bad side, how the fuck can you play with zero strikers against 10 men even if only for a few minutes.
I'm really feeling sorry for Smith. He gives 100% unlike some and yet he gets the stick whereas Pritchard clearly didn't give a fuck in the second half yet when he's subbed people are on their feet.

I still cannot believed Brentford players tried to get the ref to not send Forshaw off. He was lucky to stay on the field after the first challenge, but to do another one within 30 seconds of the restart...well, Forshaw should've just walked down the tunnel.

The pen was blatant, but how McCormack stayed on the field for his stamp on Pritchard in the aftermath, I do not know, but then again the officials were a joke, but at least they didn't fall for the Brentford diving, but he didn't book one of them.

Great finish for the goal from Louis T, but there was no doubt in my mind that he wouldn't have put it away that easily without his goal against Sheff U.

Great three points though, but, unfortunately it looks like McCormack and Douglas will have the last laugh.

Fully agree. I lose count how many times he needlessly give the ball away.

Pritchard is supposed to be a winger, but in the second half he didn't run at McCormack once, especially after McCormack got booked.

I didnt see Mcormack stamp.

I did however see him hit pritchard, foul him for the penalty which was stonewall if you saw it from the angle I did (top of the Don Rogers level with the offence).   Run over shouting and screaming at players and the ref, commit a number of fouls and the one time he was fouled get up and wave a yellow card in the refs face, which unsurprisingly the ref said oh yeah ill give him a card.

I think its fair to say he his a wholehearted player, desperate to win by any means.  Oh yes, and a cunt.

I thought McCormack was a pretty average player and vastly overrated by us fans to be honest.

He was great at centre half, but at centre mid I didn't think he was a decent enough passer to make him anything other than just a vocal, committed, tough tackling, but not indispensable player. I didn't give a single fuck when he left.

I was told yesterday that he'd already signed a pre-contract agreement with Brentford before the play-off match, hence him not taking a penalty. The guy who told me had no reason to lie so in turn I've got no reason to disbelieve him.
Utter rubbish.

I've heard the McCormack pre-contract thing from several unrelated people in various places who I'd be inclined to believe. Whether ink had been put to paper I do not know, but I think there is some reality to the two parties at least being involved in talks.

Whatever way you slice it, he was our captain and not taking that penalty in the play-offs was a fucking cowardly thing to do.

I missed Thompsons goal yesterday :badmood:, first time i've ever missed a goal watching Swindon live. i watched it on the football league show last night, and it was awful defending from Brentford, and a nice finish from Louis. My MOTD, was Wes, he made a few brilliant saves to keep us in the match, especially the one from the corner. COYR

A day late getting home but what I saw in the game......

Smith, I didn't think he got much abuse, well not from where I was sat just a huge amoutn of groans when he inevitably fucked up, he has the touch of a rapist, he is weak in the air, can't control it and his penalty was quite weak.

He needs to work on his first and second touch, but he has scored a few goals so he must have something there, but I genuinely fail to see it.

Louis took his goal fantastically well, the way he robbed a very poor Douglas and slotted the ball in the net was excellent.

Jay Mac looked very lively and fitter than I have seen him, he was all over the pitch in what seemed to be almost a sweeper sat in front of the defence certainly in the 2nd half, he was very close to MoM.

Foderingham made a great save from a fierce shot that I didn't think he would stop, he was pretty much faultless as he almost always is, claimed crosses and looked comfortable kicking when a few poor back passes put him in trouble.

Stephens looks a class above any defender at the club, his play reminds me a lot of Calderwood, good in the air and on the ground and made a couple of lovely little runs through the middle of the park like Calderwood and Taylor used to, we must sign him up for next season if we can, he did say after the game that if Saints loan him out then we are the club he wants to come to...nice.

Luongo was poor, he looked a bit off the pace and tired to me.

Branco started slowly but marked the lazy Donaldson out of the game and pushed him so wide he was ineffectual and barely had a look in.

Troy looked a rock in defence and won a lot of headers and tackles and the 3 centre backs looked like they had played with each other all season.

Nathan looked good but is still a little hot headed and gave a couple of balls away but did well overall.

Byrne looked a little lightweight and made a few good passes and runs but not his best game.

Pritchard is an enigma, good on the ball but argues with officials and dives when he should stay on his feet but he has an obvious talent that does give us something up front and can make chances out of nothing.

First half we let them come at us early on and they started much brighter than we did, the penalty came a bit against the run of play, we started playing a bit after that and looked more at ease and 2nd half we looked a lot better but still didn't create many chances but with the wind behind us we certainly gave as good as we got.

Brentford.....cheating dirty bastards, dived at every chance a couple of their players almost begged the ref to book or send our players off, McCormack was the worst culprit, he was a disgrace.

When Branco got injured and Wes kicked the ball out in injury time Brentford never gave the ball back to us, unsporting to say the least, almost cheating, I am so glad we beat them and I hope they don't get promoted.

Also how the hell is Toumani Diagouraga a professional footballer? the man is the worst passer of a ball I think I have ever seen at this level...ever.

And Brentford fans dealing coke in the toilets of the Merlin after the game being raided by the old bill minutes after we came out, giving the old bill the big "I am" and fighting them and fighting themselves too.

Assuming you are on about the 2-1 victory in 11/12 when Turner nearly had a heart attack post match, the ref's name was Brendan Malone, and they were correct - he is from Salisbury.

He was also the referee for our match yesterday.

Yep - the over-watering of the pitch was another underhand tactic, but when you're the weaker team you need to do everything within your power to even it up. Didn't suit us at all, but if the situation was reversed, I'd expect we'd have done the same.

One thing this end of season rattle has done is make me look forward to next season with more than a little hope.

Looking at the clubs coming down and those coming up there will be a lack of a 'billy big bollocks' team next season.

Get your money on the Blades, I reckon.

Brentford fans can go fuck themselves. They're happy enough to watch those cheating, whinging, shitbags but a bit of fucking water on the pitch, fuck me. Is it worse than not giving the ball back after Branco is injured. Is it worse than Foreskin or whatever his name is taking Louis out and then doing the same to Branco - yes the same Branco who was later injured again. But a bit of water, fucking sacrilege. Is it any worse than Alan mac waving his imaginary cards at the ref. Is it worse than the cunt who fouled Louis in the 1st half in front of the DRS and then elbowed him in the face as he got up. But that fucking water.
A bunch of fucking whinging cunts just like their wanky, scumbag fucking players. I would love it if they fucked it up and I'd love to see a picture of Alan mac, Foreskin and Harlee fucking Dean if they fuck it up.

Enjoyed that. Great win. Goal superbly taken by Louis.

Smith looks like a guy short on confidence at the moment, shame to see people getting on his back so quickly.
That said, that's two successive home games he's picked up the ball just in the oppo's half towards the DRS and put a sublime ball through the centre and left backs for a forward to run onto. Storey scored from his against Sheffield and Byrne could have done better with his opportunity yesterday.

Where did those Brentford fan quotes come from? I'm sorry but surely the fact you play at home means you can do whatever the fuck you like to the pitch to suit the home side? As long as its in good playable condition and you don't say deliberately put potholes in the pitch or whatever. Surely the point of playing your home matches means that the home team prepares their pitch to suit the playing style of the home team? Who gives a shit that this doesn't suit fucking Brentford and their team of nightclub bouncers!

Smith is such a frustrating player. Since he came in we could tell he has the touch of an elephant, but this hasn't improved in the 3 months or so since he signed which is really irritating. However I think abusing him is unfair. If he was strolling around not giving a shit then this might be warranted but from what I see and read, he puts in a bloody good shift every match.

Good win though and that's 1 of 5 that Cooper asked for.

They have very short memories, considering the refs in the 2 play-off games last year gave all the big decisions their way from the penalty we should've been given for handball in the first leg, the foul and the handball that should've gone our way in the lead up to their last minute penalty award, to the sending off of Byrne for getting pushed in the back by Donaldson and falling on the ball.
