Title: Tranmere Rovers v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, 00:00:10
The Opponent: Tranmere Rovers

Imagine having Liverpool as your older and better brother or sister, that’s what living in Birkenhead is like. Having Liverpool, despite its drabness and petty criminality, as the place nearest to you that’s actually OK in places. And then picture yourself ‘across the water’ in Birkenhead looking at Liverpool everyday and knowing that the town you live in is overshadowed by a dying, decaying once-great gateway to the world. And then picture yourself looking at Birkenhead itself. It’s most famous statue is a replica of the cake Queen Victoria scoffed at her wedding. A fucking cake statue...... Merseyside PCT records show that they also have the highest suicide rates in the country, the area is famous for its smuggling, luring ships and wrecking and murdering shipwrecked sailors, nothing has changed apart from different targets, old age pensioners. The Wirral is also known to have more drug addicts and hookers per square mile than anywhere else in the country. Impressive. Commonly known as ‘North Baghdad’ by those in more fortunate parts of Wirral, this blighted spot is quite possibly the most resolutely working class enclave in Britain. The middle classes have totally fled from it.

Hot off the local plastic Scouser press, Channel 4 has decided not to film a new series of their infamous reality show Benefits Street in Birkenhead North. Last week residents in Fairbrook Drive received letters from programme makers Love Productions, inviting them to take part in a potential second series of the reality show. It sparked outrage from householders, who told the Globe they would not be taking part in the programme. Now Channel 4 has backed down in the face of protests.  A spokesman for the channel said: "As part of research producers spoke to two residents of Fairbrook Drive in Birkenhead and to Magenta Housing."We are not planning to feature the street in the series." Surely this could have been the perfect start to regenerating Birkenhead back to standard shithole levels? Talk about ungrateful. The thing I find most surprising is the Channel 4 producers didn’t just go for a more widespread view of the area, Benefit Town, so to speak.
.

Where the opposition gather –  The other Tranmere site requires registration it would seem. I ain’t telling them a thing, cunts will burgle my house next time we are at home.

http://www.thefootballnetwork.net/boards/list/s383.htm

Last 6 – WDLLWL – Currently 20th on 39 points with a minus 21 goal difference.

They have served us both – Gareth Edds, Gary Williams, Abe Rosenthal, Steve Peplow. Roy Greenwood, Nicky Summerbee, Alan Navarro, Marlon Broomes, Wayne Allison, Paul Rideout, Pat Jackson, Ian Muir, John Kelly, Tony Warner, Stewart Williamson. Jake Jervis, Ken Beamish, Scott Endersby, Iffy Onuara, Bryan Hamilton, Alf Day, Arthur Briggs, Frank Curran, Liam Ridehalgh

The Odds –  Tranmere 9/5  Draw 12/5  Swindon 13/8  Can we make it 3 games unbeaten including 2 on the road? Of course we can. 1-0 Town pays a large 10/1 with Ladbrokes. I noticed they seem to be offering much better prices on 1-0, 2-1 and 2-0 scorelines to either side than anyone else. The same 1-0 Town scoreline is 15/2 with most others. Paddy Power are offering 18/1 on the new great white hope, Ben Gladwin scoring first, worth a few bob?

The Son Says – He is still buzzing from Saturday’s effort it seems. After managing to drag him away from Minecraft (don’t ask) for 3 seconds he has predicted a handsome 2-0 victory.

The Prediction – The shellsuit wearing Northerners are in a relegation battle and will be looking to take the game to us. We will expose this and destroy them. 3-1 Swindon, Gladwin, Smith and Luongo with the goals, 267 making the journey, poor sods.

And Finally – HMS Birkenhead (no really) was designed as a frigate, but was converted to a troopship before being commissioned.  On 26 February 1852, while transporting troops to Algoa Bay, she was wrecked at Danger Point near Gansbaai, 140 kilometres from Cape Town, South Africa. There were not enough serviceable lifeboats for all the passengers, and the soldiers famously stood firm, thereby allowing the women and children to board the boats safely. Only 193 of the 643 people on board survived, and the soldiers' chivalry gave rise to the "women and children first" protocol when abandoning ship, while the "Birkenhead drill" of Rudyard Kipling's poem came to describe courage in face of hopeless circumstances.

I was starting to dislike the place until this sentence.

A town devoid of the parasite middle class sounds perfect.

2 all draw.

Quite. No doctors or engineers or IT specialists or a whole host of productive and necessary members of society. Also no entrepreneurs who are usually educated 'middle class' (hate the classifications, mind) and build productive businesses that employ others. Perhaps that is the problem in Tranmere after all.

1-0 to the Town.

I'm an IT specialist (Networking and IT security) and I don't think anyone could accuse me of being middle class.

3 more points will see us above his relegation cut off prediction.

1-3 with more Town fans travelling to the grimy north than those yellow bastards managed at Southend last night - tosspots

Getting 3 decent results in a row, has been a major problem all season...we had one trot of 3 wins in a row in October, and that's it.

It kind of comes with the territory of a young side....inconsistent, so grinding out a draw would be a very decent achievement, and give us 52, usually enough to stay up.

I actually agree with Reg! Playing teams at either end of the table this time in the season is always tricky. Tranmere are fighting for their League 1 existence, while we have nothing much to play for.
I'd take a draw.

I wouldn't be too sure

We could end the day 4 points from the playoffs and right bang in the mix. Something I'm sure the players will be aware of even if a lot of others have given up hope already.

Not necessarily saying I think we'll do it, I think Sheff U are most likely to take 6th spot. Just that I would hope the players would still give it their best shot when, mathematically at least, it is still a very achievable goal. They're a bunch of cunts if they have given up already.

If we were rising up the table after a bad start instead of vice vera then we'd all be much more positive about our chances.

I agree that it's not completely out of the question, but with only 8 games left to play and being 7 points behind Peterborough (who also have a game in hand) it's extremely unlikely.

Sheffield United had a slight dip the last couple of games, albeit, two tough games, but still can't rule them out, nor Franchise who are starting to find a bit of form at the right time, while Peterborough are struggling at the moment.
If we were to do it, we'd probably need to win at least 7 of our remaining 8 games.
If we win tonight and Preston beat Peterborough it'll look a lot more promising.

To be in this position with 8 games to go is still a pretty good achievement all things considered.

Tranmere haven't kept a clean sheet in any of their last 8 games, so fancy us to score, so going for a 2-1 win tonight.

as a fan you are always going to have that little bit of hope for a magical run. whilst it is still mathematically possible lets go for it, absolutely nothing to lose (we are safe lets get that out the way).

as for the talk of Sheffield utd, i think their next 3 fixtures will ruin their dream, tues sat tues. brentford, rotherham, leyton orient and then they are off to wembley.

Imagine being that elitist with absolutely nothing to show for it. An arse-end boom town whose most famous feature comes from the fact some f*ckwit lacked the common sense to not pile 10 roundabouts on top of each other. Reek of fat opinionated mosher you. Green Day is a fitting soundtrack indeed. Imagine coming from somewhere so drab and cultureless that an irrelevant, outdated American band was your reference point (and then even going for a more irrelevant album). Imagine also appearing to know f*ck all about anywhere else in the world, that you could be so out of touch in your opinions. Even the fictitious parts of Merseyside in you fantasy would have more culture pumping through them than any part of some pointless middle earth town. Do yourself a favour and leave Swindon once in a while.

It works both ways SWA, for every tired scouser joke, there is one for a 12 fingered bumpkin from Swindon, which doesn't bother me per se, I just find it a bit unimaginative.

What can we expect from Tranmere tonight? I read you have a few injuries and your defence is prone to the odd calamity or 2?

Just kind of thought it was worth pointing out what people outside of Swindon think of Swindon.

We get that plenty.

I wasn't even heading down the 12 fingered bumpkin route to be honest, I was thinking it was more Milton Keynesy. And Speedway. Any town where the mojority of the inhabitants walk around in those god awful jackets is pretty bleak hey. Obv the only busniess I've had there is the County Ground though.

When haven't you seen a Tranmere defence which is prone to the odd calamity or two? I think we've conceded the most home goals in the country this season. There's talk of Ian Goodison being drafted in tonight, so that could go either way. We have got a few injuries in the middle, yes. James Wallace managed to shake off his to play on Sat, Koumas needed injections, Steve Jennings didn't make it. All three could be out/could feature. I find it difficult to keep track of League 1 injuries anyway. I reckon we often use them as a smoke screen. Danny Holmes at full-back and Arthurworrey (CB) on loan from Fulham are also doubts (though I'd prob rather Goodison anyway).

I'm with you on the speedway jackets, although I don't see that many when I go to football!

Recently we had been prone to calamitous defending but Troy Archibald-Henville has been a rock at the back since coming back from injury. Sadly he is Ledley King Mk2 and can't play more than a game at a time so will be replaced by Brazilian bull in a china shop Rossi Branco.

Hopefully we'll go with Smith and Storey up front and give your 40 year old centre back something to think about!

Do wanna be a Birkenhead Idiot,
One Giro to feed all the minions,
Can you hear the sound of the crack heads?
Snatched handbags swiped down Tesco Express

Interestingly SWA, a majority of the first paragraph was kindly borrowed from someone who had been 'lucky' enough to live in Birkenhead for 50 years of their life, the same article pointed out to me that (if by a miracle of a chance) the working class dockers citizens of Birkenhead make it to 65, the mortality rate thereafter is the shortest in the whole of the UK. The reason for this? They can't wait to get away from the  ghastly cesspit, even if it is in a wooden box.

People have spent years tirelessly campaigning for The UK to have its own Dignitas, why bother, send them to Birkenhead.

Thanks for the bite by the way, its nice to know obnoxious little job shy scally cunts like you take the time to read it, let alone join up to comment on it. Don't tell us you have a job, the DWP could be looking. Every year Tranmere followers make an appearance, we could lose 5-0 tonight and I still would sleep easy knowing I don't have to wake up in Birkenhead the following day. Your only saving grace is the fact you have a sense of humour.

Be good for the Town if Goodison is playing, he has the pace of a breeze block, Storey will rip him to shreds.

I like the wooly coming on here its cheered up a slow boring day :)

We don't actually have a bad record up at Prenton Park, I have been there 5 times (my dad living back then up in Runcorn we always popped up for the Friday night games and back (pre 2008) I never saw the Town lose there.

Tranny have only beaten us twice in 11 games with us winning 8 and drawing once.

Having conceded 34 goals at home is the equal worst home defence in the whole football league as Coventry who have played one more home game.

The only club in the top 5 tiers of the Football League that have conceded more at home are Hyde in the Conference who are rock bottom.

Could be an interesting encounter tonight.

Wow. You do really love that Yank teen angst band don't you. Do you not feel that they piss against the wind a little bit with regard to your own right wing ideology? I can't help but feel you dropped a couple of typos at the begining as well. 3/10

Ironically I feel the same way about waking up in cultureless Swindon as you do with Birkenhead, and I'd say there was a much better chance of you beating us 5-0 than the other way round. Make of that what you will.

Your only saving grace is the inclusion of the 'women and children first' and the Birkenhead drill. You obviously take a little break from your days spent rewording Green Day songs to compile these little pre-match pieces.

Not going to be a falling out, Ward's too professional. More likely a realisation that he's not the defender he used to be.

Stephens, Branco and McEveley centre backs then? Nathan and Smith wing backs?

Good to see Storey and Gladwin start again. Good midweek performance away from home at a hell-blasted northern shithole would be a real coming of age for the pair of them.

2-0 to the Town. YOU REDS!

Sounded like we had the better start to the game but Tranny finished the half a lot better than us, could still go either way.

1-1 at half time I will take that.

That was pretty small for a league game that's for sure. We've had lower in the JPT I think but must be a long time in the league.

Mammoth journey what with the usual M6 shite on the way up and the the M42/M40 intersection being shut on the way home.

A brief synopsis would be that the system was no where near as effective as on Saturday and we were bloody lucky to still be in the game when Miles clipped in/flukes the winner. Nevermind, we won so who gives a fuck! Makes Saturday a massive game now.

We haven't had many sub 200 away attendances in the past 10 years.

09/10 - Exeter JPT 189 (a week after the league game)
08/09 - Brighton JPT 141 (Malpas' final game in charge, a few days after the infamous Histon defeat, still more turned out for it than they did tonight)
08/09 - Hartlepool 139 (On a night, Malpas)
07/08 - Tranmere 160 (night, nothing to play for)
07/08 - Oldham 152 (night, nothing to play for)
05/06 - Hartlepool 164
05/06 - Peterborough JPT 112
05/06 - Boston FA Cup replay 181
04/05 - Exeter JPT (no figure but was probably under 200)
03/04 - Tranmere 159 (night)
03/04 - Boston JPT 145
03/04 - Southend LGE Cup 199

Only one lower away attendance out of all those awful fixtures, and it was a JPT game. No idea when the last sub 127 league away attendance was, but that puts into context how poor it is.

so as en famille trudged out of the GC after stuffing Thor's hammer up his arse the wise father said, "Sheffield Utd will the last game we see this season as i can't see us winning every game to qualify for the play off's". Hhhmmm, may have to revise my plans to do the garden later rather than sooner if we win on Saturday. If Posh win the QD trophy as they should they ought to use that as a platform to secure 6th place. We have to much to do, or do we?

As good as it is to finally get a few wins under our belt, I really wish people would stop mentioning the P word. IF we win our next 2, then we still have an outside chance, but realistically it's just not gonna happen. And the fact we are even in with a shout after how poor we've been since the turn of the year is a pretty damning indication of how poor the league is.

I thought we were out of the race a long time ago, and my mind won't change unless we go on a mental winning run.

I'm just relieved that it looks like we won't get dragged into the relegation mix, it was starting to seem possible a few games ago!

If the money was there then I'm sure we'd bring in a couple of players to enhance the push but we're giving players like Connor Waldon a chance instead.

Let's see what happens and stay above Bristol City.

They did indeed, first time I'd been to a ground that was so windy that it blew some lasses tray of chips out of her hands

You're learning...

One thing I'd take a bit of issue with however, I don't think the league is particularly much poorer than most years....our visitors on Sat are in the FA Cup semi final having ditched  something like 3 Prem clubs....

I went to the 3-3 in Hartlepool. Two hattricks, 3-0 up, sigh. I got two signed Simon Cox footballs as a result of that.

The 0-3 at Carlisle United resulted in a hat and letter of appreciation.

Either way I was a fraudulent fan as I'd only travelled from Newcastle for both.

Don't matter what team Macca puts out, as long as the attitude is right and we play attacking football and put them under pressure. We sit back and try and pinch a result, that is were we come unstuck.
Swindle aren't that good.

We need two wins this week if we are going to beat the drop.

Oh dear god, that game at Carlisle was awful. To think I drove a 500 mile round trip to watch that. At least I got a free hat and a handshake from my namesake.

The drive back to Durham was bad enough.

I've got a hat from that game as well, but I'm even more fraudulent than you as my mate who went who lives in Darlo sent it to me.

Well judging by this, "Lowe took down another Lowe long ball" I have a feeling he might not be the most observant of journalists. That or Lowe is damn fast.

Does this journalist not realise that a sentence and a paragraph are two different things?

It's awfully written. I think it's pretty clear Tranmere were the better side and missed a few chances but jesus christ, he's written it as if we were pegged back on our goaline for 90 minutes as Bayern Tranmunich produced a footballing masterclass.

That's 6 points from Tranmere without ever really playing well. Damning for them.

They made a big point of it pre game on the radio, calling it a "Swindon connection"....not exactly but there is a connection to a Swindon connection!

Highlights up. Our defence looked so porous, Tranny'll be depressed to come away with nothing.

I think Miles might have meant that. If not, I don't know who he was aiming at.

Who was it shitly chesting the ball before they scored theirs? Awful defending. Mind you, theirs wasn't much better.

Nice to see the rub of the green the other way for once, if I was a Tranmere fan I'd be pissed off.
