Title: The Slavetraders v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Saturday, March 15, 2014, 00:00:04
The Opponent: The Slavetraders

Bristol (English: i/ˈbrɪstəl/, Bristolian: Brizzle, my lurve), is the capital of the West Country, and is perhaps best known for being the city where breasts were invented, but has also enjoyed a rich heritage of many things with self buoyancy including tall ships and slaves. Running through the centre of the city is the River Avon, a waterway filled with cider which for thousands of years has kept the entire population in a state of continuous inebriation allowing them to interbreed sufficiently to create an entirely new sub species of human called "Bristolians". As a port town with a such a rich history of international trade in Negro's and tobacco, Bristol has recently converted several local brothels into museums in order to house all the historical artefacts recovered by Mayor Tony Robinson. Although Isambard Kingdom Brunel was from Swindon, Bristolians will never admit it, and these days the city is mostly inhabited by students and BBC television presenters. It is said that a name similar to Bristol was first used in reference to a man called "Brizzel" who was involved in and won the world's first ever punch which took place in the area now known as Broadmead in the centre of the city. In 1794 Sir John Roache began his epic task of separating Wales from Bristol entirely with a fruit knife forming what is now known as the Bristol Channel. Today large fans are still employed on both coastlines in an effort to push the two further apart.

As the capital city of the West Country, Bristol became independent from England in 2010 following the general election of David Cameron, when the entire population rose up, took control of government buildings and refused to follow instructions from a man who was obviously such a complete idiot. Tony Robinson (a Stalinist) took command after a coalition government formed around him. Whilst many turn a blind eye to the obvious Stalinist agenda of Tony Robinson, it appears unlikely that his political power will be challenged in the near future.

Spotlight -  The People's Republic of Stokes Croft is an area right next to the centre, their leader has managed to increase the area of the place using an army of tramps armed with empty cider bottles. Since then, the residents of the People's Republic of Stokes Croft have become renowned for being the most beautiful, artistic, intelligent and friendly of all Bristolians. Within the last decade the PR of SC has evolved to become an independent nation, military force, trade hub, Eurovision winner, time zone and top exporter of bungs. This has been a source of some confusion amongst other Bristolians, who still labour under the impression that Stokes Croft is a street and not, in fact, the Renaissance. The local currency is the Squat. The Tesco Express in the locality is a popular venue for all social interactions.

Tossers.

Weather or Not? - Looking like a decent day today. Most sunny intervals with light cloud, temperatures 14-15 degrees. Spring has sprung.

Last 6 – WDLWWW - Currently 15th on 41 points.

They have served us both – Mick Teague, Kevin Amankwaah, Brian Williams, Shaun Taylor, Christian Roberts, Danny Wilson, Ken Stroud, Aden Flint, Frank Peters. Robin Hulbert, David Murray, Alex Downie, Alf Dean, Mike Lyons, Mark Stevens, Colin Gordon, Mark Cooper, Paul Allen, Alex Meechan, Matt Hewlett, Archie Bown, Cecil Blackmore, Ryan Harley, Charles Allwright, Ray Chandler, Aaron Brown, Peter Chambers, Jack Brinton, Elliot Benyon, Ernie Hunt, Billy Jones. Mark McCammon, Brian Howard, Fitzroy Simpson, Grant Smith, John Emanuel, Barry Corr, Fred Dent, Frank Curran, Howard Pritchard, Chris Ramsey. Alex Milligan, Paddy O'Brien, Andy Micklewright

The Odds –  Brizzle 5/4   Draw 12/5  Swindon 9/4  First goalscoring stakes look predictable, Sam Baldock, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Tyrone Barnett are all around 5/1 to score 1st, Michael Smith generally 6/1.

The Son Says – I really wanted us to both go to this one today but have decided not to as Mrs Rosso feels the average Bristolian idiot is not to be trusted. So whilst he is running around Laserquest, he thinks we will win 3-2.

The Prediction – If any of our player's fancy proving they do give a shit about the rest of the season then today is a good chance to do so, and they will. 2-1 victory, Pritchard and Smith in front of 14'433 with 2014 from Swindon meaning at least 12'000 of the home attendance are likely to be related to each other.

And Finally – Just fucking beat them, by whatever means, win.

Mike Teague...now there's a name I recall....GK, played a handful of games for us in the early 60's. Later on there was an egg chaser of the same name, who played for England, who was a Glos legend.

Our GK came from Glos, so bit of a coincidence if they weren't related. The egg chaser was a proper hard bastard...I was out that way a few weeks back to see Glos beat the toffs of Harlequins...never a bad thing, and Teague's bar opposite Kingsholm is worth supporting.

Always thought of Pollard as more Gas than Traders myself.  I'm not sure why.  And why is it that City get lumbered with the slave trade association while Rovers escape it?  Seems unfair to me.

Excellent thread start there, Rosso.  It's put me in an optimistic frame of mind.

Praying for a draw though,
Either way am getting slaughtered to lessen the pain  :beers:

I bought my ticket a few weeks ago fairly confident of a point at a minimum. Now a draw is seeming like it would be a very good result. Let's hope we turn up.

For what it's worth, I went to Port Vale and Rotherham, so there's every hope of another surprise!

Still think ward hadn't been too bad recently. He's just slow. Not sure I get the twitter rejoicing given his  replacement is an unknown, untested, making his debut in a Derby match.

Brave to chuck the young lad in at CB today, could be a masterstroke or alternatively a Scott Cuthbert debut.

Let's hope he is a confident lad and we see the masterstroke, I think the result could hinge on those two hitting the ground running and forming a partnership from the off.

Thing is, history says they are Slavetraders, history however does not point to many Swindon folk having 12 fingers. They know what they are, not that it matters.

My point was in reference to them (and others) calling us Swindle, rather than any reference to the number of fingers.

And unfortunately, as history has proven, we got caught making illegal payments & swindling the tax man. And that applied to our club, not the town in general.

We reply with slavetraders & (my favourite) shitheads.

My point is, if you can't take then don't give it out

I could be on my own here but it seems Ward has been one of our main defensive problems for quite a while now. 7 games without keeping a clean sheet, Ward dropped and we keep a clean sheet, as well as the welcome return of Foderingham. Like you say, doubtful, but with 10 points sitting between us and 6th place and a fairly limited chance of us being sucked into a relegation battle, l would rather see Stephens given game time than Darren Ward.

Just got back. Hallelujah and praise the lord, this team has got some guts. Fods MOM for me and glad he's back. Belford has done nothing wrong but Fods is a very good keeper. Troy and the new lad were excellent. Within the first 5 minutes the new lad was communicating well with the other defenders. Louis Thompson take a bow for the 2nd minute foul that took one of their players out at the knee.
The first half was pretty crap with Fods making one save and their keeper making none. We started the second quite well until Pritchard turned total fucking bellend and got sent off for a 2 handed shove on their player. He'd been gobbing it off all game as the City players had been nibbling at him. He'd won the free kick appeared to wait a minute and then push the bloke over. If he doesn't get this side of his game sorted he's fucked - a petulant little fucking 5 year old. We then had our best spell for 5 minutes and their keeper makes 3 very good saves. After that they fucked all over us and it was a fantastic rearguard action where the two centre hales in particular were excellent.
More than this though we showed the kind of backbone that has been lacking recently. I'm well chuffed with the point but more so with the spirit we showed.
You could see from the players at the end how happy they were and its good to see Louis pat the badge a few times.

Just back. For 60 mins that was very even contest, but the Pritch did his two handed shove which gave all the impetus for the last 30 to Shitty. Yes, the Wolves player got away with doing that on Branco on Tuesday, but we are Swindon and that was always going to be a red.

We then nearly scored from the free-kick, and the corner...but from then, it was backs to the wall, as Cotterill just put more wingers on, with the sole purpose to send the ball in the area. And Troy and Stephens won most of the ball in the area, and for that they deserve joint MoM, with Wes not far behind.

Nice to see Alex Smith make a cameo after 6 months out. At the end, another good point.

Very pleased with the overall effort today, the whole team worked bloody hard and to get a point after Pritchard's nonsensical red was no more than we deserved.

In fact we could have scored just after Pritchard's red as Harley's free kick was well saved and smith had 2 efforts blocked.

Thought the new centre back was excellent along with TAH and they repelled loads of crosses and corners. Credit to smith for another thankless task up front on his own, he worked his bollocks off (touch still ropey).

Big pat on the back to the whole team for a bloody good shift. Even Barker looked half decent!!

Trip to the beer shop now complete and sat on my arse, so my view of today.

It was two opposites for the fans, more than we normally take (I don't know how many btw) and less brizzol fans than normal and the latter seemed to have taken some silence juice. It was the quietest Ashton Gate for some time.

I was over the moon with Ward being dropped as he's been the weak link since Walsall (h) for me and in my mind unable to play and be captain at the same time with the former being our biggest problem for months. It's a shame he's got another year because he should be gone.

Wards replacement was cracking today, vocal and his positioning was superb as was Troy's and it is a shame that the two centre backs from today won't be here next year. My MOTM was Troy and I've seen it many times when we lament our players for knocking it long when the opposition has one or two centre backs who win everything in the air, well today that was us. Superb.

Midfield was well controlled and Louis collecting loose balls and being more direct than usual, similar to the second half of Wolves. Pritchard...now he needs a slap, he's apologised on Twitter but the petulant response to the foul against him was idiotic to say the least. To use a cooper-ism, he's young and will learn but there's places and situations to learn in and a game like this wasn't one of them. He's now out for 3 games and given he's our only threat from midfield or wings it's a big loss.

Up front we lacked anything potent and Smith's pass into the corner when he needed to smack the bloody thing was the only real opportunity but he ran well and chased, he needs some support though and someone with pace alongside him (Storey??). Coopers reluctance to play 2 up top is either because he doesn't like to or because we are short of options, I guess now Miles is back we'll see.

It's great to see players returning from injury and those that previously haven't played much now getting games. It'll be good to see how we do over the final few games and what we do in the summer. Perhaps the Wolves first half was the kick we needed? I think we'll find out Saturday.

Just got back. Decent performance and good to see some commitment from the players for the first time in a while. It seemed to mean a lot to them today.

Fantastic defending after we went down to 10, Wes was inspired and TAH and Stephens look like a good CB pairing. Silly from Pritchard, he needs to learn a bit of self restraint in those situations as it nearly cost us today.

It was a shame we were just starting to look more dangerous going forward. I thought Smith had a decent game but became isolated when we went down to 10, with aimless punts being sent up towards him.

Good turn out from town fans, made some good noise too.

A very well earned point, and as others have said, it's great to see some spirit back in the team.

Something mentioned on the city forum, probably something of nothing.

Their forum contributors are quite interesting  :), I wonder if they reflect the whole fanbase  :sherlock:

They don't see us as important / a real rival etc. but have a vast number of posts criticising our support,  the town itself, the fact they should have won about 3-0 etc.
For all the city fans who have managed to navigate their way to this thread,  I am from the 80's and 90's generation who live west of swindon,  where the local TV sports coverage was centred on bristol, and the catchment support crossed over. That will explain the feeling of local rivalry from my side of things. For me oxford is nearly 45 miles away and somewhere I have only visited on a few occasions. Bristol is a lot closer, and I had family that lived there (rovers btw  :D).

I was quite happy in the end....we need, what? another 2 wins from somewhere before we can quite relax.

I sighed a bit when I saw Smith picked to play lone frontman and so it proved. He ran his bollocks off but looked isolated especially after the dozy red by Pritchard. It was a silly reaction but can it really be right that the city slash tackle gets a yellow...what message does that send out? Just keep kicking people and hope you get a reaction.

It was a bit of a coconut shy towards the end but we held on with an excellent display of guts not seen for quite a while.

Please let's play 442...especially at home...

Second time I've been to Bristol and had a great day out. Had some decent banter before hand with some older City fans in the pub whilst watching England thrash Italy in the rugby. Saw some commotion in the park en route to the ground but didn't pay a lot of attention to it.

I have to say that I enjoyed my day, the 2 miles or so of Bristol I saw looked nice and plenty of bars.

Loads of police about though, counted about 10 large vans race past as we walked back to the station.

It was more the point that our fans are quick to criticise players when they make a mistake, but are happy to overlook any perceived issues when they are producing the good stuff.

Actually his biggest problem is that he needs to realise that he's is playing for Swindon Town, and not a big club. If he were then he probably wouldn't have got a red card (like Sako on Tuesday), and would probably have had a lot more protection from the referee in the first place.

In the year he has been with us I don't think he's developed. Unfortunately I can see him signing for a Championship team and going down the leagues. There's been plenty of Pritchards who have been fancied to make it and haven't.
He's got the skill but he hasn't got the physique and he sure as hell hasn't got the attitude. City were after him from the first minute and he fell for it. Skill should be allowed to flourish but in the real world tough shit.
His petulance has not got better as time has gone on and in part that is Cooper's fault as our disciplinary record is crap particularly for use of the gob.
I hope he learns from this but I'd happily see him benched after the 3 games are up and play one of ours instead with an eye on next season.

Top day out bar the transport police escort
Cunts
Thought back 5 had a great game and for me Wes MoM though Troy could easily have had it
Pritchards a dick end of.
Despite the fact it was a hard earned point and so much good to take from the defensive performance ( more down to Wards ommision and the inclusion of Stephens than anything else ) up front we could still be playing and not score.
Smith had a decent enough game but is so isolated nothing is going to come of punting the ball up to him AND have our players forgot how to shoot ?
Luongo on a couple of occasions went on a run that took him into the pen area and both times chose to lay ball off rather than have a go - and we all know he can hit them.
Still its a point that means the slavetraders havent beaten us this season so I can live with the rest.

Oh and

An enjoyable day and we did well to hang on for a point, riding our luck at times. As others have said, plenty of effort and the back five were excellent. Sadly, still a lack of creativity although it was always going to be a struggle with ten.

Will have to see the Smith chance again but at the time I thought it was a complete sitter and he didn't seem to put his foot through it.

I find the Pritchard stick amusing - a very stupid red but his first full season and he is named amongst the top three youngsters in the Football League and the top three players in League 1. Not bad at all, and if Spurs can send us a similar talent next season we will be laughing. Our best player by a mile and he will be missed.

Pritch was stupid doing what he did that's for sure. He does need to keep his temper better that's for sure. That'll be 6 games he's missed this season for his petulence. He's a top player at this level though which is what makes it more frustrating.

Not trying to condone his reaction but has anyone seen the tackle from there guy on any highlights yet? I didn't realise at the time but apparently it was Wade Elliott! Yeah that nice guy who ended Keith O'Halloran's career all those years ago.

Pritchard was stupid but Wade Elliott is a nasty piece of work. Did he even get booked for it? How come the so called highlights manage to miss out Harley free kick and Fielding double save from Smith?

He could be Tierry Henry, but his attitude fucking stinks. Paolo would've had him in the bomb squad and you'd all be sucking him off for it.

Nah, I don't think he'd have bombed out. His attitude in training etc. is purpotedly very good, but he just can't resist telling the ref how to do his job.

The red card actually annoyed me more than it should, and it actually overwhelmed my frustration at Pritchard for being such a petulant little twat in the first place. It's not a red. I've been watching Town, and football in general since before I can even remember and I can't remember ever seeing a player sent off for pushing someone in the chest.

It's violent conduct apparently, but was Wade Elliott's cynical lunge on Pritchard (from behind as well) not violent? He made no attempt to get the ball.

I hope Pritch realises his mistake, he seems to be genuinely sorry so best we move on.

On the game, City fans seem to think they should have battered us, but considering we are awful away from home, awful in general recently and have a shoddy defence, they didn't do enough to deserve to win the game at all and were grateful to Fielding for that pretty heroic double save just after Pritch was sent off. We earned our point, not through good play but just sheer effort. We need to fucking win soon though.

Something Paolo was fairly good at too if memory serves me correctly.

Good post too Tails. Sums up my thoughts pretty much too.

Didn't Lee Tomlin get sent off for Posh in the home league match for doing something similar to Kasim, or was that a second yellow?

For me if you are going to get sent off for violent conduct, at least do something vaguely resembling violence, not gently pushing someone over that doesn't have their balance.

Doubly stupid from Pritchard as we were starting to get a grip on the game.

The biggest issue with the sending off was the time between being fouled, getting up and pushing their guy over. It wasn't instant, he'd had time to think about it and still did it. It wasn't impetuous, it was brattish.

It was a second yellow, and of course, the Wolves player only getting a yellow on Tuesday for doing exactly the same to Branco.

It looks like Pritchard is grinning when he goes off.

Then apparently turns on the waterworks in the dressing room.

I need to watch the highlights, was 10 deep at kick off and can't remember a thing about the game.

Great day though apart from the memory loss

The highlights are awful! Well the youtube ones are at least. All it showed was City attacking and Pritch getting sent off.

Are there any highlights showing Fielding's double save from Smith?

Easy to say now but he really should have put his laces through the 2nd effort rather than sidefoot it

FLS only showed JET hitting post and Pritchard getting sent off in their 'highlights'

Judging by the comments on the shitty forum I thought JETs chance was a great chance of a goal, in reality Wes had it totally covered and it would not have gone in if it was on target.

My initial thought was that he'd saved it.
