Title: Swindon Town v Wolverhampton Wanderers Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, 00:00:06

The Opponent: Wolverhampton Wanderers

Its rare I am glad that I had to miss a game but going by some of the imminent forecasts of doom from some on here and plenty elsewhere it sounds like Saturday’s game was the right one to miss. There won’t be any stopping me tonight though, the last job is booked in for 4pm in Penhill so I reckon its game on. I would imagine a decent sized crowd tonight, mainly thanks to the hordes that are likely to make it down from The Black Country. Did you know the surrounding area near Wolverhampton became known as the Black Country when, during heavy industrialisation of the area in the late 19th century, pollution covered the area in black soot and left the soil black! Will our lot have the testies to raise themselves for a big game like this? Do they think they have much to play for? Only time will tell I guess.

Wolves had sold 1746 tickets in advance of the game and with pay on the day also an option some of their fans may well make it a last minute thing and make it nearer 2000 in hope of seeing their team go for a record 9 consecutive wins. I remember the away trip to Wolves earlier in the season, we played them off the park for large spells of the game with some of the early season entertaining brand of football we were witnessing causing them all sorts of problems, the only thing missing from a good day out was a deserved 3 points, instead we had to settle for none. Let’s be honest, Wolves are firing on all cylinders and if you was asked at the start of the season who you fancied to go up this year then not many of us would have left them out of the mix but the alarming thing is anything less than a resounding victory will not be enough for some. If the players can show some determination and some effort then let that be enough for now, anyway, in the words of one TEF member, I’ve got a good feeling about this one.

Weather or not? – Finally a spell of more settled weather has plonked itself over our little island, variable cloud expected but remaining dry, temperatures should be sitting at around 8 degrees come kick off.

Where the opposition gather –

Devizes Wolves sounds like a nice guy (bottom link)

Last 6 – WWWWWW (Gulp, currently top of the league)

They have served us both – Jock Bell, Paul Ince, Joe Holyhead, Tim Flowers, Glenn Hoddle, Ernie Hunt, Arthur Hetherington, Miles Storey, Darren Ward, John Trollope, Ady Williams, Ted Batchelor, George Ndah, Ernie Jones, Roy Pritchard, Mike Collins, Mark Crook, Andy King, Andy Mutch, George Cryle, Peter Eastoe, Ken Keyworth, Bobby Woodruff, John Chadburn, Billy Rose, Jimmy Poppitt, Leon Clarke, Ted Vizard, Gerry Taylor, Paul Walker, Jimmy Lee, Frank Talia, John Skull, Mark Walters

The Odds – Swindon 3/1   Draw 5/2    Wolves 10/11  Aside from the Chelsea game this must be the longest odds we have had on us to win at home this season.

The Son Says – We sat down just before bedtime and watched the highlights from the game earlier in the season, by fuck was Ryan Mason’s goal an absolute blinder. He still has the belief and has gone for a 3-2 home win.

The Prediction – Not sure if anyone has ever noticed but I have never predicted a defeat, and tonight is no different. We will win this game 3-2 in front of 9’488 (2001 from Wolverhampton). The goal stampede will come care of a Smith double and a late late screamer from Pritchard.

And Finally – In their last 8 league games they have won all 8 matches, scoring 21 goals and conceding just 1 goal (to the slavetraders). I remain more convinced by the minute we will fuck their new club record that most of their fans seem to think they have already won.

I'm not sure it's fair to describe us as "a little island" after all GB is the 9th biggest island on the planet...Wolves in the early 50's were a sort of proto Manure....Billy Wright married Joy Beverley of the Beverley Sisters, the girl group of their day, they could attract big pay day European nights for friendlies, even though the FA and FL couldn't be doing with the johnny foreigner stuff of the European Cup.

It was left to the Sweaties to take the radical step of entering the European Cup, when Hibs did so, and England soon followed suit, Wolves had a couple of goes in it as Champions in the late 50's but were undone by Barca...

As long as we keep it somewhat competitive and don't get embarrassed I'll take it.

We need some element of confidence to take into Saturday.

Sort of game, and the type of team that we'd be up for normally. Unfortunately with us being light up front, we'll only win 2-1.

Should be a routine win for the town.  I can see Wolves' young team freezing on a big occasion for them like this and with Swindon running into a nice vein of form there's really only one way this can go.

3/1 to win at home under the lights looks minorly tempting to chuck a tenner at, but surely we won't win, will we?

Corrected for you.

Dicko and Sacko are a strong powerful front two and TAH and Wardy are going to have to be at the top of their games.

We will probably win, because I'm not going!  I started a 6 week college course on Tuesday evenings last week, so after a bit of umming andd aahing I'm going to that instead. I wouldn't have dreamed of missing this game when the fixture list came out, so it's a shame that based on recent performances I don't feel that bothered I'm going to miss tonight (she says knowing full well, she'll be gutted if we put in a stonking performance and win!)

League positions suggest competitive match.
Points difference suggests comfortable win for Wolves.
Form suggests Town to get a good dicking.

I'll go for 2-2 from 0-2 down with 10 mins to play. A bit like the last time Leicester were here. God knows why...

We have no right to get anything out of tonight and doubt we will though what will matter is how we play.
Whether we play for the whole 90 and show some desire/spirit and self belief.

That will go along way to quieting the mongs down.

Im not at the match.  Im taking the bbc stats literally.  I would just like to say we're extremely unlucky to be 3 down.  We have had as many shots on target and more shots in general at this point.

I blame the referee and bad luck.  Not that we are not as good as them.

Thing is they include all STs even if not there.  The figure they read out on Saturday was much higher than the true crowd.  The Town End was less than half full and there were gaping holes in the DRS that were full a couple of months ago.

It felt very strange driving past the CG at half time when I finished college knowing there was a game on.  I can't remember the last time that happened, must be a fair number of years ago.  I had no idea of the score as the radio was playing music.  I guessed it wasn't great, because there were a fair few Swindon fans leaving.

what's his excuse this time? players too young, referee cost us the game.

Disappointed with that although didn't expect to win tonight. We didn't play with any urgency until the last 15 or so minutes. Smith kept tracking to pick the ball up in midfield. Harley kept slowing the ball down, giving Wolves time to get players behinf the ball. Players out on the wing screaming/signalling for a ball that never came. Every little 50/50 went the way of Wolves. How their number 10 stayed on the pitch after spitting at Branco I don't know. Clark was bound to score the cunt.

I hope we turn up and actually give it a go saturday.

First half was men against boys, at times we were inept, how they could score 10 seconds after we take a corner just shows our lack of pace at the back.  Actually a lack of pace all over the field was very evident, we were out fought and out muscled.  Second half we played much better although how much of that was down to Wolves sitting on their lead is questionable.  DNG may have played his last game for the club, didn't seem interested and Cooper alluded to that in his interview.  If we play like that for the rest of the season we may be alright but it's a long way to the end of the season and 52 points to me!

I quite enjoyed that. First half we were constantly sleeping at the back but the second half was decent and certainly better than Franchise. (I've not read anything else in the thread.)

Title: Re: Swindon Town v Wolverhampton Wanderers Official Matchday Thread
Post by: chalkies_shorts on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, 22:26:01
For 70 minutes men against boys then we get a goal and game on. Wolves absolutely fucked all over us first half and deserved their 3 goal lead. Their 2nd and 3rd goals show how to move the ball forward at pace. in the 2nd half they didn't get out of first gear and were cruising. then we got a surprise goal which Smith took well and we had a good spell.
MOM for me by a country mile was JMac but predictably given to Pritchard again.
At least we lost to a decent side and put in a decent 20.
Ward was absolutely shocking and our defence was a total fucking shambles. Harley was pure dogshit and Byrne is good going forward but a fucking awful full back. There are no real options on the bench and yet again we have so many people behind the ball and regularly kept 3 back against their attacker.

Not a bad second half, mainly due to Wolves getting out the deckchairs. Jay Mac was outstanding throughout though. If we had 11 of him on the pitch we would have won. Unfortunately we have Harley, with Luongo not far behind him in the shit stakes.

I can't see next season being any better with Cooper and Power pulling the strings.

Title: Re: Swindon Town v Wolverhampton Wanderers Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Summerof69 on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, 22:29:05
Knew early on that we went going to get anything from the officials with them giving Wolves every 50/50. The first goal was offside, with the lino consistently being at least two yards behind the play.

The second was caused by the lack of midfield pressure on the Wolves midfielder, who put the ball in space to Dicko, who went past Ward like he wasn't there, and finished into the bottom corner from the edge of the area, with the third, on the break from a corner, but Dicko just went through our players without challenge like they didn't exist.

We actually didn't play badly, we certainly played better than Saturday, but it was the same old story of not taking our chances. Still cannot see the point of Harley. That midfield looks lightweight with him in there, and when Louis T came on, at least there were a few more tackles going in.

Wolves really should've had two players sent off, one for a push on Branco, and for the attempted headbutt, but he chickened out from the decisions. If it was Town players committing the offences, we would've been down to nine...

We looked down to the bare bones, whilst they get a £12m parachute payment, which means that can buy players from higher league to help them get back up.

My MoM McEverly. Still cannot believe Pritchard got it again.

Anyway, next stop Ashton Gate...

at times in the first half you harley, luongo and kasim could have held hands. surely as a professional you'd know that there's no point asking for the ball if you're that close together?

as soon as we moved pritchard into the furthest forward position we looked a lot better.

Utter shite. We got murdered 1st half due to cooper's tactical ineptitude. Why play so open against a team so in form when we've not played well for about 2 months? It was asking for it.

As others have said, we only got back in the game via wolves massively relaxing 2nd half, not via us actually being any good.

Credit to Jay, Pritchard and smith for putting in good shifts despite things not always coming off.

Luongo looks like a different (much much worse) player over the past few months.

Special mention to Ryan harley for being possibly the biggest pussy I've ever seen on a swindon shirt. The bloke bottles tackles like I don't recall seeing any other league 1 centre mid do. He has ability, but slows everything down to a snails pace. Man up or just fucking quit the game if you don't fancy it FFS.

things need to change on a big way, otherwise without the likes of prichard, ranger and others we're going to be fucked next season, which is a disgrace to be saying, because we really should still be in the play off hunt this season.

First half was abysmal. Absolutely abysmal. We lost every 50/50 which pissed me off more than anything! Why harley started over l thompson I dont know!!
Second half was much better but wolves shut off as they were cruising. Thought Pritchard, mceverly and smith were the only ones who came out with any credit tbh.

Thought their fans were pretty silent throughout apart from when they scored which surprised me!

Ummm, others did say that prior to me. Why is that offensive?

And I'm miserable because my football team have been shit for at least 2 months now and have thown away the chance of making the play offs.

Any excuses of "this is where we expected to finish" etc are total bullshit and the acceptance of medicority.

There was no particular disgrace in losing to that wolves team tonight - 1st half they were the best side ive seen this season. But we didnt put up a fight until we were 3-0 down and they had relaxed 2nd half. More soft goals conceded and slow, ponderous possesion that often led nowhere.

Well we gave Wolves a 3-0 head start, a combination of us playing like twats and them playing us off the park, mind you I didn't expect us to win but I did expect us to put up some form of fight. They should be top of the league and walking it with their expensis, but we could have at least had a go at them. Second half we improved/they took their foot off the gas and we scored to give us some hope, but always a lost cause - thought Jay McEveley put in a good shift tonight and Pritch looked good tonight. Luongo and Harley poor again for me. I think you have your work cut out Mr Cooper to turn this around and I hope you stress the importance of Saturday, derby or no derby!

If we'd beaten Franchise on Saturday we'd still be 7th, 5 points behind P'boro'. As it is we're 5pts. adrift of Dongs and 8 off P'Boro.

Whoever said that losing to Franchise on saturday was the real end of our season was right. Now a period of forward thinking can occur.

Title: Re: Swindon Town v Wolverhampton Wanderers Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Batch on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, 23:27:48
Ok here I my thoughts:

First half Wolves dominated. First goal Byrne made a mistake with a weak clearance that should have been row Z but didn't go out of play, but the ball in was very good and we didn't really pressure them for it.

Much like Walsall, Wolves had us sussed at the back. Whereas Walsall got down the wings to tear us a new one, Wolves went central. They ran from deep and simply outpaced our defence. I can't blame Ward for being slower - he just is - but they did it for two more goals and a few other times too. We should have worked it out. In fact it could have been 5-0 at half time, they hit the post and put another good chance over. We were limited to a few long shots and a Pritchard effort palmed wide, but Wolves were comfortable.

Second half, as so often happens when a team dominates in the way Wolves did, they took their foot off the gas and got the cigars out. And that nearly lead to giving them a bit of a scare. We were already looking the better team - Thompson (?) fired across goal when he should have squared and we knocked on the door but Wolves didn't let us in.

However Smith turned neatly in the box and finished well. Then for the last 20 it was us that dominated. We so nearly made it 3-2 with the header that hit the underside of the bar, and that would have set up an uncomfortable finish for Wolves, but it didn't go in. Then wanker came on and scored. And that was that.

But importantly when we played well the fans re-engaged with the team an got behind them, and although it was a poorish performance the fact we did well for the final 20 minutes made me feel a whole lot more optimistic for Saturday.

Plus points: Pritchard was bright, Smith worked hard, J Mac was MoM by a country mile. and there may yet be a player in Barker yet.

Bad points: Too easily picked off in first half. Harley is trying, but is too pedestrian and may have been a crab in a previous life moving everything sideways. Luongo was largely poor again an gave the ball away too much,  and we always try to play down the middle of the pitch which is easily contained by a competent defence.

edit: Oh yeah, what the fuck happened to DNG. He was superb against Peterborough with his workrate but can't be arsed now. And to think I defended the fucker when he was placed on the transfer list. grrr.

Agree with that.

Jay Mac was bloody fantastic, is it unfashionable to award a defender a MOM award? Granted, Pritchard was a real handful in the 2nd half, but for me a barely fit Jay Mac was streets ahead.

I'm glad we made a go of it in the 2nd half, Despite the result I found myself enjoying the game.
Bit sadistic but I quite enjoyed tonight too, Got to admire their 1st half performance and although they took their foot off the gas at least we gave it a bit of a go 2nd half. Their support was good in numbers but was expecting them to be really loud throughout which didn't happen. Until tonight Walsall were the best side I've seen at our place this season but Wolves were a level above anyone else.

I wish Cooper would stop Ward being slow and cumbersome, Harley being a pussy, others putting no effort in, people being injured, virtually all our defenders making such stupid errors they cost us goals week in, week out, and our squad having no strength in depth.

There are a lot more factors contributing to our form than the manager - he's just the easiest/laziest target.

I wouldn't worry to much. Anybody that disagrees with O Ms theory of, Everything In The Gardens Rosey, is automatically a, miserable git.
Which must now include The Town End after their chants of "What a load of rubbish" and "boring boring"

Not read back yet but here is my take on the game-

Wolves are top of the league for a reason- they are better than the rest of the league by a country mile. The first half last night proved this. We weren't good in the first half BUT, we have played much worse football this season. It didn't deserve the boos and 'What a load of rubbish' chant that it got. Wolves made more space than we did and used it effectively. 3 goals effectively.

Second half was more like the game at Molineux. We seemed to have found the desire we left in the changing room for the first half. I enjoyed our play for most of the last 45+ minutes- until The Cunt scored >:(

I got a bit frustrated with the way our moves up the wings seemed to slow down or stop once we had got accross the half way line. On a few occasions Byrne was moving forward with lots of space in front but stopped hsi run to look for an out ball. I think it was because there was noone bombing forward in the middle to give him a reason to get further up the pitch and put a cross in. When he did, generally his crossing was good.

Jay was my MOTM. He should be our next Captain.

Well they smashed us.

Cut through us like a knife through butter.

They were very very good and despite my poor rating of Cooper, i think a better formation with our better players with a better manager would of struggled to cope with them, at least until they switched off.

The lack of anything ...fight, idea, battle, nous, tactical changes etc until the game was over on 80 minutes was a frustration, as was that cunt Clarke scoring.

I have been called a moany, angry, negative cunt (all true) for the last few weeks but i would like someone to point out ANY positives from last night with the exception of Smiths well taken goal.

We need 6-8 points from somewhere and i dont know where they are coming from.

The thought of getting smashed to fuck at the slavetraders with the game ending with them only 3 points behind us, fills me with dread....we will see...hope springs eternal...

Overall I agree with Batch's assessment of the game.  Compared with Saturday, Town played better through most of the game - but Wolves are not Franchise (crap).  The power and speed of the Wolves movement in the first half would have tested any defence.  And the key difference for me (allowing for the slowness of our defence) was that all across the pitch there was incisive movement which meant there were any number of options for Wolves in each attack.  Personally, I thought Branco had a good game (apart from allowing Clarke to get the ball through his legs for his goal).  And I agree that JMac was outstanding.  The real weakness in the first half was in central midfield , which was so ponderous, and no-one seemed to know what to do with the ball once they got it.  Harley's passing was poor, and Luongo just seemed clueless.  Kassim was OK, but presumably still fatigued, because I would have replaced Harley with Thompson rather than him.  I think most on here are less than generous to Pritchard, who was everywhere he could be, and was the source of all threat in the first half.  Whilst JMac would have been a worthy recipient of MoM, I expected Pritchard to get it.  I guess its difficult for a defender to be given it in the face of such a defeat...

The second half WAS a different story, the question is how do you get that kind of performance for 90mins.  I enjoyed the game, even though it was painful sitting through the first half.  Wolves sould win the league easily.

Jay McEveley was completely committed and had a good game but thought Alex Pritchard was excellent. Our only real source of creating something every game. We are usually reliant on him. Think a lot of people will only realise how good he has been this season when we don't have him anymore.

Michael Smith so much better in the second half too. Actually helped link the play up.

They made us look amateurish,  it was frightening. It was a bit like when Southampton  came back for the cup game under Di Canio. They were just on another planet.

Encouraging 2nd half despite Wolves taking it easy. Smith, Pritch, Jay, Louis and Byrne all did well, CBs didn't stand a chance against that pace but goals aside did ok. First half was terrible, don't gwt me wrong but at least the effort was there in the 2nd half.

So an expected heavy defeat and bloody Leon Clarke ruined my prediction.

My question to those that went, and this kind of carries on from some bloody spineless performances that I have been to this season that out of the players in our squad, who ACTUALLY gives a shit when they go onto the pitch.

If we had 11 J Macs (and I think Byrne cares as well, although he polarises opinions) at least you couldn't question the desire and commitment.

Harley for instance, is such a shite bag, and this irritates me.

I have said it before that Smith has a terrible touch, but he will score goals given the chance and works hard for the cause. That's 5 goals now, and he has probably had 7 chances created for him in his whole Swindon career. Feeding off scraps.

I fear that it might be ugly at City on Saturday.

In my opinion, these are the outfield players who can be guarenteed to make an effort-

Jay Mac.
Nathan Byrne
Nathan and Louis Thompson
Pritch
Mass
Raffa Rossi Branco
Nile Ranger
Yasser

Mass seems to be in the middle of a bad patch at the moment. I think he is knackered and it is showing.

Not everyone excluded from the list is a non trier. many haven't been around enough to make a true assesment but, of those, I would say George Barker and Michael Smith can probably be included.

The positive, is that getting the 6 points that maybe needed should be just about doable, as I've been saying since the Shrewsbury game, the win at PV being massive and meaning we can get them in ones, great shame we threw one away on Saturday, but hey ho.

Had the misfortune of attending a pasting at Chesterfield circa 2003 with the lumbering trio of Viveash, Reeves and Heywood at centre back. Watching last night and those goal highlights was horribly reminiscent of that. Ward truly ought to be put out of his misery, and Branco's enthusiasm and effort is only matched by his defensive naivety. Talking of which hadn't spotted last night just how bad Byrne's feeble clearance that led to the first goal was. Shame the highlights not include Jay Macs effort that hit the post would have liked to have seen how close that was.

I was not expecting anything last night based on our recent performances and got what I expected. Thought that first half Wolves were the best team playing in the same division as us I have seen for a while - full of pace and workrate. Second half was a slightly different story albeit we were very predictable and very ponderous at times but there were stages in the game when Wolves had ten men behind the ball so perhaps they were not that comfortable with the situation, a second goal for us might have made things interesting.

I have said it too many times this season but refereeing standards are getting poorer I am sure. Bad decisions, no decisions, ignoring blatant cheating, the list goes on and on and seems to be the norm at every game and very rarely do we seem to get things going our way.

On a final note am I right in thinking that Murphy has gone back to Norwich? If so what the hell was that all about as surely one of our own younger players should have been given a chance not a "premiership" player who showed very little as far as I am concerned.

Whilst passing the ball sideways & backwards doesn't bother me quite as much as others, the thing with Harley is that he takes so fucking long to do it, and then passes it about a yard to a team mate stood next to him, who is also marked.

The only thing that surprises is me with him anymore is that he manages to put his boots on, he's so indecisive that I half expect him to be unable to decide whether to put the right boot on first or the left.

Maybe he just closes his eyes and gets one of the youth team to do it for him

Harley is a waste of a shirt at the moment. His tackling is feeble and he offers nothing.

Luongo looked like a tired player trying to do too much. He seemed to give the ball away on occasions by trying to over complicate when a simple ball was on. Not sure that the Austrailia World Cup carrot is going to help our cause.

In general, Wolves shouldn't be in this division and obviously won't be next season. There wasn't a single player in our 11 that would have got into their starting line up. I can't blame the players for being simply less talented than their opponents and was expecing a worse thrashing than we actually got. I thought the second half was pretty decent and had Jay's header gone in who knows what might have happened.

Our squad simply isn't good enough in depth to maintain the position we had worked ourselves into, and the focus now needs to be getting the points on the board needed to stay up and then getting the targets in place for the summer. With the departure of Navarro, Williams, Benson etc from the wage bill, along with TAH probably moving on and hopefully some cash for Ranger, we should be able to put together a slightly deeper squad.

At least 10x, Sako is supposed to be on £25k a week and O'Hara £20k a week in the reserves.

I spoke to a guy at work who is a Saints fan and he went to the game. It's quite interesting to hear a neutrals view on the game. He was sat with the Wolves fan as well, and said they started to shit it a bit when we completely took control of the game in the second half. But the consensus was that we were actually quite a decent team, although he didn't rate Harley and Ward (shocker) but felt we were quite unlucky in the end.

It was one of those games really. Wolves dominated first, we did second, but they are much, much better than us. We could have knicked a point, but we fizzled and didn't take our chances and were punished.

If we could have that effort and play in the second half for 90 minutes on Saturday, that'd be much appreciated lads!

He was another one that was forced onto Cooper by Power remember Power saying what a good player Murphy was.

But to be fair to the lad I dont think he was really given a chance here, he is a winger and was never given the chance to play that role as we dont play with wingers - a waste of a loan. I expect Norwich wont be happy taking one of their youngsters and not giving him much game time.

That's quite useful actually.....and I agree with him/them....Harley seems to be a mystery.  I thought on Saturday, after TAH, he was probably best of a poor bunch.  Tuesday he was crap...bottled out of tackling and even when he made a more adventurous pass, it was inaccurate.  Overall, I think people are being unkind to Ward.  No he isn't as quick, and yes he was turned inside out by the pace and movement of the Wolves strikers - but he was also left virtually on his
own too often, especially in the first half.  But playing a sweeping role, moving play forward he was certainly better than on Saturday when 90% of his passes were backwards across field to TAH...any decent centre forward would have leapt on that very quickly.  I think Branco has real promise...showed he can play with the ball at his feet, chased and covered for Nathan Byrne very regularly, but was so often out of position, so leaving Ward very exposed....  I would say that a defence of Thompson, Branco, TAH and McEverly with Ward coaching would be a very good starting line-up for next season.  Then there is Hall (if he were to stay), Smith, Barthram and Reckord as back up....doesnt sound bad to me.

Ward is decent when the ball is coming at his head, but coming towards him on the floor or with quick attackers running at him, he looks like he's wearing iron boots.

On Harley though, apparently that sort of casual approach to the game has always been his style. It obviously worked at Exeter but hasn't really since. If we're in a game where we're allowed a lot of space (a la Crewe away, where he had a decent game) he will thrive but in games like Tuesday, and I imagine Saturday, he's a passenger.

Thing is, I saw some good performances earlier in the season, at least 2, he has it in him but if he can't produce on a reasonably consistent basis there isn't much point. Can't believe he stayed on v Wolves.

It's the constant shirking of tackles that annoys me, when he's supposed to be one of our senior players. He goes after the ball like a ballerina dipping a toe in cold water. There's no way he should be starting in the derby ahead of Thompson on Saturday. The level of commitment he's showing at the moment, he wouldn't win a 50-50 with a subbuteo man.
