Title: Peterborough United v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, 00:02:29
The Opponent: Peterborough United

2 games from Wembley. I sense the excitement is not quite the same as what it was a couple of years back. I think we had at least half of the attendance away against Barnet, possibly more, and I’m pretty sure we had 11’000+ for the return leg. The Wembley novelty may well have worn off after a couple of wholly unsuccessful marches to the arches but I still remain as up for it as ever. There used to be an opinion that the Di Canio factor would put perhaps 1500 on the gate, perhaps the home tie will put this to the test.  I have had a day off work today due to having a big toe that looks not dissimilar to the type of rancid purple penis you might see on that Embarrassing Bodies program. It involved a metal rimmed pew (with foldable legs), and a flight of stairs in an old church at the bottom of Vic Hill, the only thing missing was Sid James and Kenneth Williams. Being the martyr I am, its back to work tomorrow, taking in the sights of Malmesbury, Redhouse, Cirencester and er, Walcot.

After losing just one of their first 13 league games, Posh have won four of their last 16 in League One to seriously dampen their ambition of an instant return to the Championship. Only  5,297 came to watch Peterborough's most recent Saturday home game, a 3-0 win over Tranmere, compared to 6,956 at their last Saturday game in October, which was a 1-0 win over Shrewsbury. If you ask Mark Copper how we will approach this game he would be likely to tell you “the same as any other”, but with a team full of young players that may not get many chances to play at Wembley in a relatively short career, you would hope they would bust several guts in taking the opportunity to prove themselves at football’s biggest stage, and I would have thought despite playing them twice so far this season already, Cooper himself will always have a point to prove to his ex employers. I want to pay £25 to park my car on someone’s drive near the stadium, I want to pay £11 for a pissy bottle of Carlsberg and a horse burger, I even want to sit on The M25 wondering why I made the journey in the first place, but most importantly, I want to win, every game we play! COME ON SWINDON!

Weather or Not? – As I type this my conservatory is feeling the effects of whatever storm the Yanks throw at us this time. It seems after a dry start at dawn, showers will move in for most of the day, some heavy and prolonged. The heavier rain should ease to showers in the evening before clear skies taking over in the last couple of hours of the day. Temperature holding between 6-8 degrees, strong southerly wind gusting to 40mph. Sounds like a great day for football.

Where the opposition gather –

http://www.theposhforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=24479

Through fear of upsetting the Posh fans (in the same way I upset the Shrewsbury fans), I won’t make out Peterborough is a soulless, famous for fuck all dreary unwelcoming hovel. They know this already.

Last 6 –  LLLWWL

They have served us both –  Cup tied Nicky Ajose,  John Sheffield, Kevin Dearden, Claude Gnapka, Mark Cooper, Don Heath, Steve Jenkins, Lloyd Opara, Fred Laycock, David Ball, Bobby Barnes, Kenny Alan, Graz, Trevor Benjamin, Sol Davis, Jim Barron

The Odds -  Peterborough Evens  Draw 12/5 Swindon 11/4 The fact we have failed to keep a clean sheet in our last 12 outings in all competitions and our shit way from home added in with Peterborough’s ability to score for fun and it seems the bookies are predicting a resounding home win, Darn the naysayers.

The Son Says – Confident as ever, we will win this 2-0 and begin the first phase of banishing his Wembley demons.

The Prediction – We will go to London Road and shock the watching world with a thumping 1-0 victory, Nile Ranger with a stoppage time goal in front of 7’788, 555 from Swindon.

And Finally – Darren Ferguson, you are a cunt.

If on, holding them to 1-0 would be a fairly decent result. I'm going for a 1-1 though, with an equaliser from Smith.

Defo take a 1-1. Smith is cup tied though mate.

You can also get 11/2 on Nicky Ajose to score 1st with Hills.

If it goes ahead we'll lose, maybe 2-0.

If it gets postponed we won't lose.

Based on their match being off on Saturday...I'd be very surprised if this on, but the east of the country should be dryer than the west, so maybe they've missed some of our recent shit.

The pitch at the moment is playable , however heavy rain is forecast in Peterborough from 11am through until 8pm , there is no pitch inspection planned at the minute however this could obviously change should the rain arrive.

Up until close of business yesterday just over 1000 tickets had been sold, and with the prices going up by £4 if you pay on the day , that coupled with the match being shown live on Sky will result in a very low crowd, I will be astonished if we break the 5000 mark.

For those of you that are travelling down the Peacock Pub which is straight across the road from the ground, 2 minute walk to the away seats is open pre match , its child and away fan friendly and car parking is available for £4 per car .

With regards to the result we have been shocking in recent weeks and have lost several players in the transfer window, Ajose as you know is cup tied, and our 2 new arrivals are unable to play, however hopefully with the chance of a trip to Wembley on offer maybe the lads will put in a performance us Posh fans know they are capable of.

Out of interest how many Swindon fans do you think will make the trip down ?

I will keep you guys updated with the weather situation here in Peterborough .

I doubt we'll take many more than 300.

We've been fucking shit recently and with all the injuries, suspensions and ineligibilities I expect us to get battered. Hopefully we keep it low enough so we have a chance of redeeming in the home tie.

Cheers mate. Looks like they'll wait for us to get there before calling it off then. In Reading it hasn't rained much awhile this morning. There's still hope. Appreciate the updates, keep them coming.

Given the weather, our poor form, and the for most a long journey on a work night, I'd have thought 100 tops.

Surely though if it was waterlogged on Saturday, the last thing to do would be to cover it.

The pitch hasn't been covered , something to do with how wet it is underneath and covering of it for some reason was not a option.

Perhaps shitty weather and a howling wind will mask our present shitness to the viewing public.

I'm trying to find a niche bet to liven up the entertainment this evening.

4-2 looks worth a nibble at 50/1 and 3/1 for a penalty to be given during the game seems pretty good

We're really not playing at all badly though.

We could have done better with their second but there's no accounting for Branco thinking it's a good idea to put it in his own net.

Dear oh dear, Branco seems to play on the edge like he's always seconds away from a fuck up, unfortunately both goals are dine to him so far.

Wonder at what point Cooper will get out of his seat .....

I thought we started brightly enough and the og was a sucker punch....Shaun Taylor take a bow!

The second was dog shit....why cant we hit it row Z.?...or parking space 258 now the stand has gone!

Rangers finish was superb.....just excellent. If we can get the ball to him he is capable of this.

Jay Mac is a huge loss, tonight and for the league matches, for once we had an outlet that could cross a ball on the left. He was unlucky with the Red as Ambongo ducked in a bit but Louis was lucky with that raised foot for his yellow....so....

Their OG was shit and Brancos was by far better.

A fucked up pitch might help us if we can keep it fruity for the second leg we have a chance...

Cooper looks pumped up to beat these...bit of passion on the bench...excellent.

Is Ambongo back on....?...his twitching legs when i looked first meant i thought he was having a seizure (serious)...looks like his eye is fucked up a bit.

Come on lads...get in to em!!

Normally they are replayed in full. The only time I can remeber where a match was not replayed was the Bradford fire disaster.

Talking of Bradford, I remember beating them 3-0 at the CG with about 15-20 mins left and the game was abandoned due to the fog. The game was replayed...2-2.

If we only had a defence that didn't piss and panic in the first 20 minutes of games we'd be OK.

We can't defend can we? What was Branco thinking of? Surely such a situation must be standard in training?

Somebody allowed the ball to bounce from a long cross for their second. I think it was one of the Thompson's twins?, they looked surprised as though these things don't happen in football.

I don't blame Branco for the 2nd that went under his legs, that was unlucky. He didn't have a good game though.

Kasim looked classy a fuck. There to win the ball, distribute it and then be there to help out if it needed to be bounced back to him. Ranger made this football malarkey look easy. Gladwin is raw but oozing talent and effort.

Very harsh on JMac. No intent whatsoever but rules are rules.

Pretty sure it was branco that let it bounce. He was wrong side of his man 5-6 times first half. Improved 2nd though.

I think someone mentioned they're light on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. They could choose both games if they felt like it. I'll give you hope and say it's likely to be Tuesday.

That week the Champions League is back and they've currently showing one game on Tuesday and 2 on Wednesday. They'll probably show the game on Monday night.

Well I hope Cooper gets some credit on RS tonight.Tactics spot on with 10 men and in fact for the majority of the 2nd half it looked like we had the extra man.Great performances from Kas, Mas and Ranger and N'Guessan gave his usual 100%.Branco was a car crash for most of the game and Thompson N was lucky to stay on the pitch.Gladwin showed brief glimpses of promise but soooooooooo predictable. All in all a good performance which gives us a real chance.Shame Kas is gonna miss 2 league games-bit of a backfire really.

Thought both Thompsons, Kasim, Luongo and Ranger played well. N Guessen worked hard but didn't seem to do much on the ball, and Gladwin promising but very predictable.
I really rope Troy starts ahead of Branco Saturday.

Last season's 2nd leg tv tie was Southend v Orient, played on a Wednesday night, with Champions League games AC Milan v Barca and Galatasary v Schalke on the box as well.

This season Sky has Leverkusen v PSG on the Tuesday night, with AC Milan v A Madrid & Arsenal v Madrid on the Wednesday night of w/c 17th Feb.

Sums it up for me. Surprised by Gladwin but needs to get his head up quicker, something there though. Good to see Yasser back to something like the player we've seen most of the season.

Great response after accusations of not wanting it and apathy in the Gills and Oldham games, to fight back with 10 men like that. Just got to win a home game and it's a trip to Wembley - you've got to be happy with that.

Hopefully they can take some momentum and confidence to Port Vale on Saturday

Am I the only one who thought Gladwin looked totally out of his depth for most of the game ? He had 1 decent run in the first half, but apart from that the full back had him in his pocket for the whole game, he didnt beat him once. THe cross for the own goal was the only time he attempted a cross without trying to beat his man and he looked seriously lacking in pace. That wide role is probably not his natural position, but even so, I was amazed he lasted so long especially as Byrne was on the bench. Not totally writing him off, just thought he consistently chose the wrong option and looked a yard  slower than anyone else last night.

Can't really disagree with what you have said but that was his first full match for us on a pudding of a pitch and he came through it ok I thought. Yes, his one trick worked first time but after that Knight-Percival had him in his back pocket and not a lot came off for him. That said he put in a shift and always looked for the ball. He was painfully slow though, he was put through first half and looked to be jogging forward instead of sprinting through on goal. The commentator last night said Reading released him because he was too small!

After his cameo on Saturday and last night, I think there could be the hallmarks of a decent midfielder in there.

Also, how classy did Kasim look last night? Its a shame he's now suspended for 2 games, he's been a brilliant find.

We're picking up these lads from non-league or Prem stiffs....in many ways I prefer the non-leaguers, might not have so much ability but likely to have better attitude.

We know from experience....that for every Charlie Austin or Simon Cox, you'll get a score of Darren Dykes, Ben Martins or Bertie Brayleys.

It's highly unusual for these types to just step up seamlessly....it could be that they just won't, or it could be they need a bit of time...we as fans can help by being supportive rather than getting on their backs.

Title: Re: Peterborough United v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread

Darren Dykes is now playing for Newport Pagnall Town.

Ben Martin is playing for St Albans City along with (Kerrea Gilbert who I can remember turning out for Arsenal a while back)

Bertie Brayley has had more clubs than Nick Faldo since leaving us. However he has had International caps, for the England learning disabilities team.

There are, inevitably, more who are just not good enough for league football....take Branco for example he's come from Conference South...can he make it? Maybe.  Gladwin similar...the rest of this season is a good opportunity to give these lads some experience....we ought to be able to just about avoid a relegation battle, and are not realistically hunting a PO spot.

Would you comment on being especially dire for the 3 mins he was off the pitch?

For both teams, last night showed why you struggle without a half decent defense

We are now 5 points off the play off's and 14 points off a relegation spot. FWIW with the way we've played the last few games I don't think we deserve a play off spot, couple that together with the way we defend at times (e.g. first 20 minutes last night) then I don't really expect us to get one either. In reality though if we stick a little run together on the back of that performance last night then we could easily still nick in there.

Nah you're not the only one as some bloke behind me spent a large amount of the game shouting about how shit he was. Nothing like giving a guy a chance on his full debut. Personally thought he did a pretty decent job. Was good at holding the ball and is a real presence. Their full back had the beating of him but then he's not a winger. Put a bloody good shift in on an appalling pitch, there's room for improvement but I'd be happy with his performance if I was him.

All in all really good away support and pretty loud up the back when we got going. How many did we take, does anyone know?

He reminds me of a lower league David Luiz. Comes charging out of defence into midfield to try and meet a ball he doesn't need to and leaves massive gaps in the defence behind him. Must be how they build them in Brazil. I think he's a better defender than Hall, but they need to work on his discipline.

He reminds me of a lower league David Luiz. Comes charging out of defence into midfield to try and meet a ball he doesn't need to and leaves massive gaps in the defence behind him. Must be how they build them in Brazil. I think he's a better defender than Hall, but they need to work on his discipline.

That's true, for the Posh second goal the misjudgement where he was so far ahead of the ball it was comedy and Nathan had to bail him out with a great tackle.

To be fair the ball would've had a lot of wind behind it at that point..

Yes, I had it programmed to record via Sky+ but it didn't start. Luckily I was home in time to watch it and pressed record then.
Interesting! I could have sworn I set it to record too, but it didn't .Fortunately, I called home to my son and asked him to check. He recorded it live and I only missed the first 32 seconds!

Would anyone who did manage to record the game be able to run me off a copy, please?  Will pay for disc/postage etc.
