Title: Places/Events in the UK you haven't got around to visiting but wish you had.
Post by: Dostoyevsky on Thursday, December 5, 2013, 20:58:45
Dartmoor/Exmoor - the wilderness appeals.

Scilly Isles by ferry from Penzance - hoping Scilly Red will put out an "all are welcome to stay" invite.

Bodmin Moor - a leisurely walk concluding in a few jars in the famous Jamaica Inn

Kyle of Lochalsh railway from Scottish west coast over to Dingwall.

Northern Ireland - Despite one my best mates being from Belfast, he moved over here and hardly ever went back himself and kept making excuses so it never happened which is a shame. Would like to meander hither and thither across the Peace Line and get tanked up in rough pubs on both sides of the religious divide.

Go to Rannoch Moor and recreate this scene from Trainspotting - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29-LRuuqFT0

Wimbledon Tennis - And shout lewd comments at some fit Slav.

Appleby Horse Fair - check out how disreputable those Tinkers really are.

That's enough to kick off.....

Good call. Been meaning to do that for years. They still do an unofficial event..

Lincolnshire...been to just about every other bit of the UK, generally if not specifically, but for some reason never been there. Have meant to go to one of the away games, but something has always stopped it. The cathedral in Lincoln would be a priority.

Where do they do that torch thing and get pissed? Is it in Cornwall?

Also the UK equivalent of the Pamplona bull run, if there is one? Maybe a night out in Widnes  :)

Events wise this would be a good one.

I've been to Shetland, but at a different time of year...

That looks superb Reg. End of January too. Maybe, just maybe, will pencil that one into my blank schedule.

Northern Ireland on the lash wouldn't be a good idea still. In general its quite safe, but the pubs can be well dodgy if you go in the wrong one.

Been to many Towns and Cities in England over the years but in all truth it's mainly just there and back for football matches. Now the kids are older we have drifted away from the traditional beach holidays and started to spread our wings away from Cornwall and The south west. Cumbria and Scotland are two on the list of places to visit.

Yorkshire Dales then drive over North Yorks Moors to Whitby and then drive down the coast to Scarborough.  All this will be during winter when it's gloomy, cold, wet, windy, etc so the landscape is at its rugged best.

Can recommend Cumbria, been all over it and love the place. One of the few places I would move to in England. The lakes, the coast, and Carlisle is quite a nice place. I also like the open spaces of Northumberland.

The mountains and lakes of Cumbria in pictures and on programmes looks stunning, Definiately need to make the effort to get up there.

Lincoln is excellent - one of my favourite places. You've got the cathedral and castle just across from each other. I really like lincolnshire but I think Sleaford Red may have a different take on it.
One area I'd love to explore is Berwick / Alnwick. Will get there one day but the kids won't stay in the car that long without taking each other out.

Lincoln itself the only thing Lincolnshire has got going for it, IMO.

I'd like to explore Scotland more.  We've done south west Scotland, Dumfries way and beyond.   I'd love to explore the highlands, and I need to go to Edinburgh.

Shameless shout out to anyone who hasn't visited North Wales - I live there - it is one of the most beautiful landscapes I've seen.  It would take a lot to prise me away.

I stayed in Scotland between Christmas and New year 1995, in the cairngorms. Happened to experience the coldest recorded temperature ever in the UK... -27c. When you sniffed it actually froze your snot  :toocool:

I love it here, hence the decision to stay when I left the RAF.  Just moved to Coningsby, so here for the long term!  Only down side is 4 hours each way for home games!  Bit wet at the moment mind!

Visited the New Forest for the first time at the weekend, loved it.

Never considered myself much of a 'rambler' but really pleasant doing some walking through heathland and the woods near Lyndhurst, ably helped by the sunshine I must admit. Nice and quiet (bar a bit of traffic) too, for a city dweller such as I am made me keen to spend a bit more time in the countryside.

Also, for you fact fans, discovered that the Alice who inspired Lewis Carroll's stories is buried in the churchyard at Lyndhurst, so there's that.

Did you pop to the little cafe on the edge of Lyndhurst (on the Ashurst road)? Lovely fry up! I've stayed at the Ashurst campsite many times. Lovely walks, a train station,  2 pubs and an Indian restaurant all within walking distance. Plus, it's a 1hr 15min drive from home.

When/were you in the RAF?

I did a tour of Masirah back in the day

Didn't find that one no, we stayed at the Crown at the top of the high street and their breakfast was more than sufficient! Surprised by the pubs down there actually, in that quite a number were pretty naff. The Fuller's was good, but so is the one at the end of my road in Croydon! Was one really decent Free House called the Waterloo Arms, tucked away a bit and opposite the police station so doubt they get much trouble  :)
