Title: Swindon Town v Notts County Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Thursday, October 17, 2013, 23:02:28
The Opponent: Notts County

So its back under the lights at The County Ground this evening for a rare Friday night of football. I’m not really fussed with these experimental kick off’s. 3pm on a Saturday is where football belongs for me personally, but on the other hand some people work every Saturday and don’t get nearly as many chances to see us play as what I may, so I guess it works well for them.  Either way I am looking forward to it like I do every game and after an impressive show put on in South Yorkshire last week, hopes must be high for another 3 points. If other results go our way today we could well find ourselves in the play off positions, early days yes, but encouraging none the less.

Notts County are the oldest professional league football club in the world formed in 1862. They even outdate the Football Association itself and were one of the founding members of the Football League some 26 years later. According to legend, The Italian football club Juventus derived its famous black-and-white striped kits from Notts County. Juventus have played in black and white striped shirts, with white shorts, sometimes black shorts since 1903. Originally, they played in pink shirts with a black tie, which only occurred due to the wrong shirts being sent to them, the father of one of the players made the earliest shirts, but continual washing faded the colour so much that in 1903 the club sought to replace them. Juventus asked one of their team members, Englishman John Savage, if he had any contacts in England who could supply new shirts in a colour that would better withstand the elements. He had a friend who lived in Nottingham, who being a Notts County supporter, shipped out the black and white striped shirts to Turin!

The Last Time We Met– Not too long ago back in March, The Magpies visited the County Ground and played out a 0-0 draw, which just about summed up the second half of our season quite nicely. Nearly 8’500 that day!

They have served us both –  Matt Ritchie, Alan Sheehan, Steve Mildenhall, Phil King, Herbert Chapman (For Reg), Phil King, Paul Ince, Jake Jervis, and er, Paul Hart.

Where the opposition gather –  Its rather morgue like.

http://boards.footymad.net/forum.php?tno=402&fid=17&sty=2&act=1&mid=2112031208

Notts County Last 6 – LLLLLW (Currently 22nd on 7 points)

The Odds – Swindon 4/6  Draw 3/1  Notts County 19/4 Again, quite big odds on the away side but our home form has been nothing short of brilliant so far this season which justifies the bookies prices.  I had a 35/1 winner on the England game a few nights back and I today I think Nile Ranger for the first goal is good value at 5/1 with Bet 365.

The Son Says –  I don’t think there have been many games where he even predicts the opposition to score and today is no different, 3-0 home win.

The Prediction – I think we are capable of dishing out another spanking today. With respect to County, the league position they find themselves in would suggest they are there for the taking. 4-0, goals from Nile Ranger (2), Darren Ward and a late Ajose wonder strike, in front of 7’885 (288 from Nottingham).

And Finally – Nottingham is the birthplace of both Boots the Chemists and Raleigh Cycles, and bacon buttie favourite, HP sauce was invented here by grocer F.C. Garton. Boots is even older than Notts County, as John Boot set up the business in 1849. Raleigh is a relative youngster, formed in 1887. And HP Sauce a mere stripling, the name registered in 1895 (HP denoting Houses of Parliament where Garton heard his delicacy was served).

Apparently Notts play open, passing football at the moment, so hopefully they won't come and stick 11 men behind the ball.

Not sure how they do it now but always used to be it was about £15-20 for a replacement. If it's on a matchday, get there early, explain the situation, buy a match ticket, then they used to refund the match ticket when they sorted out the replacement. Best ring the ticket office.

EDIT: So actually I have no useful advice to offer other than "Ring the club" and then a bunch of half-remembered anecdote. Arse.

This is the sort of game we usually slip up in. Doing well in the league, terrific home form against a shite side who will set out to defend. Not feeling too confident, although if we can play our game we could, potentially, win quite comfortably.

I'm going to go for 1-1.

We could win easily given their form, but as Tails says this is the sort of game that we often fuck up on, that said, there is a belief in the town from the players and fans and if we hit them from the off they can not cope with how good a side we are.

Not sure it will be a very big crowd, probably about 7,215 with about 225 Maggies there.

I see on ther forum the old "disgraceful £25 entry" rears its head again, yes it is a lot of money for a league one game but if you look at the Notts site a comparable seat there is £24, just £1 less and you get to watch shit football and not the silky smooth football that you pay that extra quid for at the CG.

http://boards.footymad.net/forum.php?tno=402&fid=17&sty=2&act=1&mid=2112027938

Predictions from them.....a lot of them very confident they can beat us or at least get a draw.

Should be a win. At home, got rid of our bugbear on the road, mason back, we should tear them a new one.

3-0. About 6995 with 212 making the trip from County. Someone told me the other day (a Forest fan...) that County and Forest actually get on alright for two teams from the same place. Is this true? It can't be surely...

Still have a soft spot for my home town club but not enough to stop me hoping we turn them over. Theyll no doubt attempt to park the bus and frustrate us so the earlier we score the better. Good to hear Mason is in contention.

Notts County fans seem to have the same preconception as every other club in the league.. That we had financial trouble and sold all our best players & therefore aren't a strong side. Which may have been true, except for the fact we probably have some of the best individual talents in the league.

I said yesterday it might not be a wise idea to start Mason, but given his fantastic ability to create something or well, score from anywhere, he could be key against a side who I predict will sit back and try and hit us on the counter.

Yeah, I always get nervous before a match like this that we should win-history has taught us otherwise. Stupid Swindon and your propensity for losing matches you should win...

I think bringing him on would be better- presuming we play the same team from the Rotters game, it'd be great to have the option of a fresh mason against a non-fresh County defence/midfield.

Anyone know what the  bollox is about ?
See it from county fans on my twitter feed

Google is your friend  :D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wheelbarrow_song

There are many different stories about where the song started. Some believe it was when a groundsman was on the pitch at half time with a wheelbarrow. As he cut the corner of the pitch near the corner flag, the wheel fell off and he spoke to the County fans and a terrace chant was born, sang from one end of Meadow Lane to the other like a giant game of vocal ping pong. Another version is the song derived from an interview with Neil Warnock in the local press. Which Neil stated that 'When I first came to Notts County all I had was a wheelborrow...and the wheel fell off that' hence the song was born.

However, a more realistic version, believed by many supporters who were present at the game, is that it started at a match back on Tuesday 17 April 1990. Notts County were playing away at Shrewsbury Town's former home, Gay Meadow. The Magpies were trailing to two Dean Spink goals and looked to be losing, with less than ten minutes left. The Shrewsbury Supporters were happy and singing On Top of Old Smokey. But because of their strong accent, it sounded like "I had a wheel barrow, the wheel fell off," to the Notts County fans. The magpies fans then sung it back as a way of taking the mickey out of them.[1] This had an effect on the team who managed to pull back two goals in the last ten minutes to draw the game. The song then accompanied the Notts County team all the way and on into the following season, with another trip to Wembley Stadium and another victory, with 25,000 people singing it beneath the twin towers. It has remained a firm favourite at the world’s oldest football league club ever since

N'Guesson and Bryne are the wide players I suspect. With Pritchard just behind Ranger.

Confusing. Nguesson spent the last half hour on the left as well. It's working though

Some choice comments from Notts Co. commentary.....

Too fast and powerful for the Notts defence
Incisive passing
Town getting it forward very quickly
Very fluid
The best attack they have faced so far
A pleasure to watch (town)
Like an exhibition match (great football from town)
Notts defence cannot cope
A bit embarassing (for Notts county)
Incredible it's only 2-0
Swindon dominated for long periods
Like a practice match (for swindon)
Swindon 'absolutely dominant' in 2nd half
Totally outplayed
Town have real acceleration and power up front

Just back - my thoughts :

Very impressed, yes Notts County were poor but the way we pass and move is sublime. Kasim and Luongo are the best midfield pairing since Hoddle/Moncur. Add into that Pritchard, Byrne, NGuessan, Ranger and you do have quite as team. Even Jay Mc is looking like the player we always hoped he would be.

Kasim was my mom. Its ace when you take off Pritchard and replace him with Mason.

Only critiscm is that we need to be a bit move clinical, quicker and at sometimes precise.
In short, I'm loving it. More than I expected and more than last season.

Should really have won by more, but the ref was a cock. I cannot remember Ranger winning one free kick despite their centre half holding him and pulling his shirt all game...bar the corner, where he scored from !!

Well whats left to say
2 nil and apart from the first 10 pretty much bossed the game
County came to play football and early on found a lot of space down our right.Rangers goal seemed to slow county down ideas wise.
Gotta take your chances ( as rovrum showed )

Both pens down the other end to me so have no clue whether were or not but theirs was a wild one clearing the bar by some distance.
We needed a killer 3rd goal but it wouldn't come despite a good few attempts 2nd half. Kasim let one fly that keeper did well to push away and Byrne hit the post after some good movement from the whole team.
Clean sheet and 3 points at the end of the day
Decent crowd for a friday night game - TE started out vocal but mid way thru the 2nd half the atmosphere had gone flat

Ranger puts in a lot of work upfront and isnt always rewarded, plenty of niggly fouls on him which went unpunished but he never gave up.
Pritchard probably shaded MoM for me. Tireless running on the left flank and some of his trickery is a joy to watch.
Not saying Kasim didnt have a good game too but then rarely he doesn't.

Bring on warsaw tuesday - at £15 will be parked in the DRS for that one

That was just brilliant.

Could've easily been 5 or 6 had it not been for their keeper pulling off several fantastic saves.

I can't remember a game where we looked that comfortable and in control.
We seem to have the right mix of players who link up well together and so comfortable on the ball.
Kasim and Luongo were brilliant in the middle, Pritchard was always a handful with his pace and skill and Ranger is so hard to get off the ball.

Fair play to Mark Cooper for what he's done here so far, the best football i've seen us play for years.

Did feel a bit sorry for Notts County, it's not as though they were a bad side, they were just totally outplayed. They were clearly trying to play football themselves and have one or two useful players (Callum McGregor stood out for me), but it just didn't click for them, but I reckon they'll be OK this season and should comfortably stay up.

An automatic promotion spot is not out of the question for us.

Good win, clean sheet and 3 points. We played some lovely stuff as we have done previously and we should have scored a few more.

Notts were awful (one of the worst ive seen here for a while) and looked like they gave up once the second went in.

However, first half they caused us a lot of trouble despite being dogshit. They had so much space on the right as n'guessan was playing up top. This led to one of the cm going out wide and then their no 8 just ran through the middle on 2 or 3 occasions. We were lucky they were awful as they should have scored especially in the first half but they changed formations in second half which gave us so much more space and they lost their threat.

Very good but still work to do.

Not yet read through.

Thought Mcevily (sp) and Byrne linked up really well, Thompson wasn't at his best tonight. Thought we played very strung some very nice passes together. Scoreline should've been better. El Gabbas has potential can't wait for him to get to used to League 1 I think he'll link up well with Ranger.

I love how we are playing at the moment and long may it continue.

First half Ranger was awesome - completely unplayable. Won everything in the air and the ball stuck to him like cum on a blanket.

As for MOM, I'm in 2 minds. Either JMac (again) or Hall who was immense at the back.

On balance I'd go for JMac - he looks like a real quality LB these days.

Fair play to County who strived to play a similar style to our own - but their players aren't as good.

What is so encouraging is the subs who come on. They just slip right in and there's no discernible difference.

I think us fans are getting a little spoilt by the way we're playing at the moment. The team seem to toy with the opposition, like a cat playing with a wounded bird. It's frustrating that we don't kill teams off with more goals but we certainly kill their spirit.

This is some of the best football I've seen since the Hoddle days. Perhaps even better?

I thoroughly enjoyed that. Sat in the DRS and the periods of probing passing were roundly applauded instead of mumbling and groaning and not a single audible shout of "FORWARDS" all evening.

We should have scored a couple more but Notts County's goalkeeper had a good game and the ball failed to fall right in the box for us a few times in the second half - getting stuck under Ranger's feet etc. Everyone played very well, difficult to single anyone out really. I've never seen McEveley play like that before, he looks like he's reinvented himself.

Notts County pressed us at the back a great deal early on and we struggled to get into that rhythm that we've become accustomed to but we hardly broke a sweat as they chased us all over the place. A special mention to their #5 who is one of the dirtiest players I've seen for a while.

Shit referee who needs to understand that not very tackle is a foul.

Not sure we have the clinical edge and control to kill off games and that will cost us points against teams who aren't total dogshit.

And it's fucking boring sitting alone.

I dunno I thought they looked awful at the back and didnt have much going forward! Passed it around nicely in midfield but I cant remember wes having to make a meaningful save?

They will struggle to score goals and with their defence id be worried if I was a notts fan. Bielkowski is a very good keeper though, made some great saves today

Pretty much how I saw it, so I won't bother repeating  :)

Even the Arkells was applauding tonight and 'Get It Forward' man was either absent or has got the message.

Thoroughly enjoyed it.  Not that it mattered in the end, but one, if not two Notts County players were offside in the build up to their penalty.

I didn't think County were as awful as some either albeit their keeper kept the scoreline down considerably.  We were just much better.  At least they tried to play some football instead of the usual park the bus routine we so often see.

Enjoyable game, spoilt somewhat by a right twat of a ref, thought our pen was soft and theirs was even softer!!  Think somebody had a word in his ear at half time as he improved a bit in the second half and didn't blow every time a County player threw himself to the ground.  The incident in the penalty area where the guy was trying to get Wes sent off or booked was appalling and worthy of a booking for him.  J Mac had a great game but just seems to lose  his confidence once he crosses the halfway line, thought Byrne had a very effective game, unlucky when he hit the post.  A lot of people thought Kasim got booked in the first half, he definitely got booked in the second!

That was a good win. The football in the first 20 minutes of the second half was excellent with County chasing shadows. A fairer score line would have been 5-0. MOM for me was Ranger who despite being fouled at every opportunity still owned the centre half. Pritchard and Kasim were also excellent although Kasim gave the ball away on 3 occasions, the first being in the 42nd minute.
Their keeper and no 8 were decent.
The ref was a cock.
Oh and Sheehans Championship career is going well.

As a long-standing critic of McEvely, and a sometimes critic of Hall at the beginning of the season, I have to say they've totally transformed my opinion of them with recent performances.

McEvely especially seems like a totally new player.

Fucking hell we have some good players at the moment. Normally in football you suffer internal frustration at players inability to meet the expectations of your imagination. At the moment it's as if my imagination can't keep up with the creativity of the football.

A lot has already been said about what was a very professional performance tonight.

We are playing good football, our players are getting to know where their team mates should be in any given situation - and they all have the ability to find them with a simple pass, which devastates the opposition at times.

We look fit, full of ideas and have genuine strength in the squad.

Like a lot of you, I was not looking forward to this season after what I assumed had been a rare golden period for us under DiCanio for a season or so.

IMHO. the current side would piss all over DiCanio's best ever STFC 11, our manager is a level headed guy who seems genuinely grateful to have got the chance to prove himself again, and there is no media sideshow any more.

There's a long way to go, we'll slip up now and again along the way, but we're looking very, very good.

Fucking magic:-)

Thought their goalie was good, would have been 6 or 7 without him on top form, the rest of their side were jollop.

Same, I expected us to be alot like Notts were tonight. Decent passing team but quite weak and liable to lose lots of games. Been amazed at how things are going so far and long may it continue. When Jay McEveley is charging forward and unleashing a really good shot on goal you know things are going well.

Top stuff. First time I've knowingly seen us play 3-5-2, and it worked a treat. Not seeing too much commen on Thompson; is his injury serious? I hope not. Barthram showed promise but I wouldn't want to rely on him

Notts county were dog toss, but we really should have finished them off. Barring the Crewe and Rotherham game, we should perhaps be wary about an inability to wrap games up despite our domination. But that's just hyper criticalism on my part. As the radio said post match, we've played most of the top teams away already this season. Dare to dream?

Said Thompson was Ill before the game and got worse so they took him off. Obviously the deep clean wasn't as clinical as Fods turds.

Just a reflection on last night, once again we were a bit slow into our stride, they had at least three corners in the first ten minutes - and gotta say their corners were far more dangerous than ours.  Once we got going though there was only going to be one result despite a total twat of a referee, he bought several of their so called fouls, slightest touch and he was blowing and booking players, yet I'll guarantee Ranger has a body full of bruises from being buffeted by that centre half, who rarely had any intention of going after the ball.  Best player at holding the ball up since the Chief in my opinion, we have had better centre forwards but at just holding the ball up Ranger is great.

Ranger is very languid in his style but very hard working and effective.

I commented to a mate last night that he takes a lot of physical abuse but doesn't lose his cool. Is this just him or is he trying to stay "under the radar" and not give rise to negative press in the lead up to his court case?

I would not be surprised if, when he joined, he was given very clear instructions to do just that.  'One strike and you're out.'  He certainly hasn't put a foot wrong so far.

  'One strike and you're out.'

An instruction that a few other strikers in our history have interpreted differently.

Got 40-1 on Ranger first goal and 3-0 so after the first half I was concerned I was going to lose due to too many goals being scored. Still figuring out why we didn`t completely annihilate them - fortunately a covering wager on 2-0 saved the day.

Entertainment value the like of which not seen for many a day - something very refreshing about last night`s performance almost felt sorry for Notts who unlike Tranmere seemed to be trying to get in the game but looked shell shocked for most of it.....what a penalty - just added to the enjoyment and also enjoyed hearing the ` get it forward` man in the Arkells - god that made I laugh. He had a pretty quiet game....

Bring it on......

Was a great match with both teams playing some great stuff.
Some of the footy we played last night had me literally shaking my head with disbelief, awsome.
Pritchard has ability that is baffling at times in the sense he is playing in LGE1.
Oh and Mcgregor for County looks a very, very good player also.
Heard a crowd murmur last night...when Pritchard dummied the ball through to Ranger,it was a loud murmur you hear now and again at football which confirms that thousands of people appreciate a quality moment all at the same time.
Really enjoyed it.

It sounded like we strolled to an easy 2-0 win, I listened to the Notts comms all game and it was brilliant, it never broke up, was good clear quality and you could tell exactly what was happening on the pitch and ho it was going at all times. Brilliant.

Why is it that whenever we beat anyone they start calling for the manager head after the game? can they not see that we are actually an excellent side and you cannot always take into account that when we thrash them, Notts are no exception to the rule even if Notts were shit.

One quote from their matchday thread shows up the ignorance of some fans to our own predicament of ownership/funding etc, and all this from a team that blatently broke league rules over wages with Sven/Sol Campbell only a couple of years ago.

Quote
On another note, how do Swindon get away with having the playing staff that they do? They got done last year for breaking the wage cap rule, surely the same beckons this season?

The ignorance of opposition teams is a good thing.  It's a sign that we are flying in under the RADAR, which is what we will need to do if we are going to make a success of this season.  Half of them still seem to think we're in mourning for Di Canio.

Great display of passing football, with an end result. Winning with style is infinitely better than lumping it and winning. Left The CG with a smile on my face that still hasn't faded.

There was a moment of play last night when I think the crowd went completely silent and it wasn't until the ball went out of play that it got a round of applause from the entire ground. Probably stunned into silence by the brilliance

Is it just me or does Ranger often look as though he has absolutely no control over the ball at his feet? Obviously he isn't just stumbling his way through with sheer blind luck but he doesn't half look clumsy and lanky doing it.

I wonder how many shots in the penalty area he had blocked last night?

Has the look of Dave Bamber.
Thought Lone Ranger was fantastic last night. Holds the ball up and that what was missing with Willams.
Nice to see a few long range efforts on target last night.

Just wonderful to watch.

Reckon a team is going to get spanked real soon if we keep this up.
Well impressed.

One other thing that has not been mentioned much is that we are no namby-pamby side playing faggoty tippy-tappy football.

There is some right steel in midfield - Pritchard, Lungfish and Kaseeeeeem.

The defence also seems to have sorted themselves out - as 3 consecutive clean sheets in the League proves.

All in all we have every right to be optimistic for the future

Jed's line when he first got involved was that he simply loved football, and wanted to be involved with the day to day running of a club.  I didn't believe him then.  It didn't sound credible.  Now I do.  The way he conducts himself - and it took me a while to warm to this - just oozes a love of the game.  It's almost childlike in its innocence.

BUT, always keep a watching brief.  I trust him more than I did, but never let your guard down completely.  We have had our fingers burned too many times before by unscrupulous owners for that to happen.

There was an occasion when he was clean thru last night as he rolled his defender but was pulled back and ref gave nothing.
He took it in his stride and carried on.
