Title: Brentford FC v Swindon Town FC Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Sunday, May 5, 2013, 23:00:41
The opponent:  Brentford, Part 2

A thought has just occurred to me. This could be my final outing (thank god I hear you say). I hope its not. Its not just the urge to want to give some polite Asian chap £20 to use his driveway for 4 hours, or even the desperation I feel to part with the equivalent of the Greek national debt for a shit hot dog and a gallon of flat coke, or even the love of getting round some of the M25 and only giving the finger to fellow road users at least 5 times. Quite simply I would love to do a Wembley thread. This season promised so much, it always seemed we would come good when it mattered, at times our climb up this league was reminiscent of the previous season. Then along came January and things went tits up. The snipers that had been waiting for our downfall thought this was the chance they had been waiting for, but we are still here. Fuck everyone else, the petty Tranmere/Shrewsbury fans, the oddbods of Bournemouth,  PNEThor, the Banbury Massive (not you Duke), fuck ‘em all! If any fans deserve a day under the arch this season then its us. Yes, I may be rather biased, but we do. Wasn’t we found to be the 4th most stressful club in the football league to follow a few years back? I think that survey may well have been justified.
As I sit here looking at my crumpets, with just a dash of peanut butter upon them, I wonder how I will be feeling this time tomorrow night? I don’t want to be reeling out the excuses like we were never ready for The Championship anyway, I want to be travelling to some of the best grounds the country has to offer! I’m sure Brentford fans will be feeling the same, last week was as near as they have been to securing Championship football for a fair while, the disappointment for them of them falling at the very last hurdle can’t be underestimated. In the past, Brentford away has been a great away game to do, I really hope this one lives long in the memory for all the right reasons, and doesn’t end up being another Withdean.

What are they saying about us?

“Lucky Lucky Brentford.

So disappointing going for the 0 - 0 and giving the momentum to Swindon.

The difference in play in the last 20 minutes after we went behind was stark, we actually started making a game of it.

Why o why couldn't we play that way all game? Only Swindon looked like they wanted to play football”

Brentford Last 6 –  WWDLLD (Brentford finished 3rd on 79 points)

The Threat – If the lack of volume demonstrated by Bee’s fans on Saturday was anything to go by I would say the biggest threat might be dozing off during quiet periods of the game. Aside from that the easy to fall over striker Clayton Donaldson knows how to find the back of the net.

An Extra Warm Welcome To – Mark Devlin. Came to our club at one of the most turbulent times in our recent history and seemed a genuine chap that loves football. Good luck to you Mr Devlin, after today.

The irrelevant stats – After Saturday’s draw Brentford have now failed to win in their last 4 outings, if they could stretch that to 1 more game then I and a few thousand others would possibly be grateful 

Head to Head – In 77 league encounters, we have won 31, drawn 19 and lost 27. That didn’t take much changing really.

The Odds – Brentford 11/10   Draw 12/5   Swindon  12/5  We have not seen many odds like that for us this season, on that basis alone it has to be worth a few bob. I quite like the idea of Draw/Swindon in the half time/fulltime bet, 7/1 with Skybet.

The Son Says – My wife said she found him talking to himself on Saturday morning in the living room in a “strange” way! When questioned he said it was down to him being worried about the football later in the day. He is starting to feel the pain. He has gone for a 2-1 victory and for mum not to drive to Wembley again.

The Prediction – This has to be the toughest one for me to predict, heart and head are battling away, I have pondered for hours, desperate for a tight victory, but respect due to Brentford, they are a decent team that nearly got automatic promotion on the last day of the season. 4-0 Town. Rooney Hatrick, Flint with the other.

And Finally –  If this is the last matchday thread I have the honour of starting then can I thank you for listening to my ramblings for the best part of a season and I wish you all a pleasant and enjoyable 3 months off.

If we win, I vote for Shaw Rosso to continue next season, whatever happens at Wembley. Always been a pleasure to read his matchday threads.

If we lose mind (we shouldn't lose. I keep telling myself that in the hope I'll believe it), you can fuck right off SR. In the nicest possible way.

Mind you, if we win tomorrow and then win at Wembley, perhaps some award is in order akin to Suggs'? Not that I'm getting ahead of myself or anything.

1-2 pounding tomorrow. Donaldson diving penalty and Ward and Williams

I feel so sorry for your son Rosso. He's clearly going through that transitional period from casual to full time fan. Where results worry you, ocassionally affect your sleep and makes you miserable long after a poor one. I'm in the midst of indoctrinating my 4 year old. I feel guilty but I don't see why he should get away with it!

As for on the pitch, I just don't think we have the players for it. Seems strange after we looked so decent at the start of the season but Ferry is completely wasted on the wing, Williams is a shadow of his early season self, no Ritchie or Thompson means nothing goes down the right. I'm not very expectant, just hope for a battle and some good news re the ownership of the club in the close season.

Its going to be tough, advantage Brentford but nothing more. In Division 4 Bradford won at Burton - who must have one of the best home records in the league. And Northampton won at Cheltenham - Northampton had the second worst away record in the league.

No bearing on our game other than to show home and away form mean little in this type of game.

We can do this.

If we win this can the Adver run an "unstung hero" sub headline please. ta.

I'm shitting it. No idea what to expect, based on their home form there should really only be one winner but all the pressure is on them so you never know, especially in the play offs.

I hope we don't go too negative and try to sit back as they will pick us off, lets get at them and give it a right good go. C.O.Y.R!

0-1, Town.

Brentford to miss penalty in 94th minute with Town going down other end and scoring the winner.

Since beating us by a single goal in mid-March, they went on at home to beat Preston (finished 14th), Notts County (finished 12th) and Portsmouth (finished 24th) - again, all by a single goal - before losing to Doncaster.  That's hardly form to be scared of.  Best hope is that they start to believe the hype...just as some of our fans have.  Can only work in our favour.

Leaving at 1:30 - be in a pub in Ealing at 2:30 - 3 and then a couple of pints before wandering down to the stadium. Given the Brentford fans comments on Swindon and surrounding environs I expect to see neatly mowed lawns, white painted picket fences and fresh laundry hanging on the lines. But having been there a few times I expect to see something similar to Swindon, albeit even more ethnically diverse.
I'm cautiously optimistic which is most unusual for me.
A decent ref and keep Donaldson quiet and we're in with a good chance.

I've had a dreadful night's sleep with some very odd Swindon Town related dreams.  I've woken this morning feeling like my throat has razor blades down it.  Part of me just wants to stay in bed and pretend we have no game today.

However, I am going to Brentford, which unfortunately is not a good omen, as my away record is pretty poor.  I can't see us scoring more than one goal, which I don't think will be enough.  Our conceding of late goals in recent matches could be our undoing.  Really not very confident at all in case you hadn't worked that out.

On the other hand, this is the Play Offs and they don't always go to form.

Feeling slightly sick this morning. Same feeling I had in the first playoff we were in all those years ago. We were shite in the last month or so of the season and I thought we would get a right dicking by Wigan, who were a good side. I was shocked to get past them.

In the final, Gillingham also started to give us a footballing lesson. I was totally dejected that I thought after a great fightback we had lost on away goals. Imagine my delight to find out they didn't count and we were off to Selhurst park!

That is where the slightly sicky feeling came from. The whole day was a combination of excitement and sickness - The same as today.

Now, who is going to be the modern day Charlie Henry and who is going to be Steve White?

COYR!!

True.  But they drew another 6, so they drew or lost nearly 40% of their home games this season.  We only need to draw.  Then do them on penalties.  This is ours for the taking.

Not overly confident about this one I'm afraid! Think they will win 2-1 but a lot depends on the mentality of of the team and the tactics that Kmac deploys. We sit back and try soak up the pressure and we will lose. Attack em from the off, they are bound to be a bit nervous after their last home game.

Those that are going best sing their fucking hearts out.

I must have your nervous anticipation then!

My quandary today is that I have to go out for short period at 5pm, 6pm and 7.45pm. Not sure whether to record the game and watch it all tonight, or record and watch bits of it between ferrying the kids around!

Christ I'm excited by this! I hope we're not heading for an almighty crash, but I really think the team are going to be so angry about Saturday that they are going to show some balls and go out there and play Brentford off the park!

(But I also thought they would do that against Doncaster)

Three years ago I was at The Valley for Charlton away. We expected little before the match and nothing when Greer decapitated Deon Burton and saw red. What came next was the best hour or so I've had following Swindon.

Let's hope for the same spirit today- although a very different final and following season. Whatever you think of Jed, KMac, that-other-guy-that-used-to-manage-us, the Trust, any mystery benefactor or Curly Withers, let's put that aside for 90 minutes (perhaps 120, perhaps penalties) and let's beat Douglas, Donaldson and the rest of the cheating, promotion bottling Bees.

Come on you Reds.

If you look at our record against Brentford this season we've had 75% more shots, shots on target and corners.

So it's about time we beat them and today will be the day.

Not unlucky. No bottle. They've got the biggest budget in this league, in which they never got beat until November. Towards the end of the season they ran out of steam, and the change of manager never really worked (except for the league game against us !!).

I think they've only got to Wembley once before, in that play off final when they got beat by Blackpool (in their celebrity 11 incarnation that featured both Michael Jackson and Robbie Williams).

It's a big deal for them I guess.

BBC Radio London comment before game saying side that controls midfield would win it.  Very true.  We need to get s grip there like we did on Sat.  Possession stats completely reversed.  MacDonald needs to learn how to strip paint off the dressing room walls at HT.

And my 'lucky' Swindon cider needs to start getting lucky, or I'm not buying any more.  (It is lovely though.)

I had to stop watching it [in pub] it was making me so angry, KMac's tactics the same as last game, ordering them to hoof the ball forward for the two lads up top to chase...

And angry that the players won't ignore him and get back to playing their own game.

As you say, Ferry totally wasted again.

Then I got back home and saw Rooney scored.... so, shit - I have to stay put here now !!

If twas me - Williams on the left, Roberts on the right, Ferry and Mc Cormack swop over.

Or Byrne to the right, Macca to left back, Ferry in the middle.

Give them something to think about for Gawd's sake !

Over the two legs we were the better side in my opinion (and i'm usually critical of Swindon).  I think we desperately missed a Ritchie type player who could run at their players as Roberts doesnt have the legs to do this.

Think we will be lucky to get anywhere near the playoffs next season unless their is a revamp of the team.  Will be interesting to see who comes and who goes.

Why a kid is going up under that pressure when more experienced players didn't beats me.

Saved us going to that overpriced dump again, and not wishing to sound too bitter, whoever goes up will struggle and be back again this time next year.

Not sure we would have enjoyed getting pissed on most weeks, been there, done that!

Without investment on a huge scale in the squad there is no point going up anyway.

God knows what happens now but at least we have our derby with Shitty back next season.

I do think a more experienced player (maybe McCormack as captain) should've taken Storey's pen, but if he was willing to take it...

At the end of the day, we lost this on Saturday at the CG when we didn't get 2 penalties we should've, but Brentford got one despite two fouls in the build up which wasn't spotted.

Anyway, we'll have to see what comes out in the coming weeks regarding players.

And the answer to those questions, especially if Jed and co. are still going to be here.

Bit unfair to pick on Storey. Shocking penalty admittedly, but at least he had the balls to put himself on the spot. Chin up lad. Lets hope he can pick himself up and press on, with us, next season.

And lets face it, minus di Canio and some serious investment, we are not ready for the Championship. Sure would have been fun though :-(

Not even sure where to start.

If we'd lost in the 90 minutes, I'd have been pissed off.  To equalize at the death though and lose on penalties was absolutely gutting.  The dejection as we all left seemed far worse than after we lost at Wembley in 2010.

That stupid last minute penalty on Saturday and one of the most utterly shambolic 50 mins of football has cost us the tie.  Brentford are shit.

Fundamentally though our season ended in January when Black pulled the plug, Ritchie was sold and Di Canio walked.  This season was never going to have a happy ending.  That was our best chance of reaching the Championship and I genuinely fear what next season will hold.  Time for some answers now Jed, you can't hide any longer!

I'm sorry folks, I cant bare looking at all the pre match posts and the post match posts other than what I have posted. I'll see all those that share my pasion in August for a relegation battle as my ST finance has been approved.

Suffice to say that all those who went today saw the last performance of many 1st team regulars in a town shirt and those on Saturday likewise!!

I think you're right in terms of a possible relegation battle next season and you could tell at the end when the players came over they were saying goodbyes - McCormack, Flint and Ferry.

Couldn't see any of the penalties as the teams were in the way.  As soon as Storey went up, I had a feeling he'd miss.  Shame it's on his shoulders a bit now.

Bad enough having 2 centre halfs and a 19 year old taking 3/5 of them!

How on earth we got it to pens after that first half I will never know. We were awful but somehow gave ourselves a lifeline with the Rooney goal. Then Roberts does that.

Credit to the players for digging deep and clawing it back. That last minute equaliser was brilliant. Thought we were going to replicate the Charlton win but it wasn't to be. No idea why McCormack didn't take a penalty. The senior players should have stepped up and shown some bottle there.

Feel really sorry for Mile Storey tonight.

Onto next season. What will the summer bring? I worry a lot of bad news.

Can't be bothered to read through the whole thread, but gutted obviously. Looking at the final third of our season though, we haven't really deserved promotion.

Bad individual errors for all 3 goals is disappointing (Rooney, Byrne, Roberts), we didn't weather the storm at all, and they didn't have to work hard to score 3 today.

We were certainly the better side at our place, victory by 2 goals would've been about right I think. Brentford were the better side today though. We did well to hang on in there. Horrible way to lose, really feel for Storey. (Flint is going up in my estimation all the time, good character today).

Overall can't knock the effort over the 2-legs, even if the quality wasn't where it had been in patches this season. It will be an interesting summer for us. I feel very nervous about it frankly.

On the plus side though. That penalties defeat has just saved me well over £100 on new Wembley.

Bad end to a mixed season. At least as a fan of the egg-chasing I can look forward to the Lions in Aus, and England's tour of Argentina.

Here's to next season. COYR

Whilst we were shit in the 1st half, think it says as much about Brentford that they only went in 1 up. Over the two legs we were the better team but didn't take our chances and gifted them three of their goals. Thought the Byrne sending off was more than harsh, with the ball where it was he was always going to land on it with his hands as he reached our to soften the fall. With 11 players I reckon we'd have won it in extra time.

No major complaints though, shit happens in football and was pretty happy with our performance over the two games. Feel sorry for Storey, no reason for him to feel guilt - plenty of better players have fucked worse in more important penalty shoot outs than that before. At least he had the bottle to take one.

Thought Kmac did a good job, making changes and going for it which ultimately paid off to get us in to extra time. I'm actually looking forward to the summer and next season, as I'm guessing we'll be getting rid of some of the overpaid older players and bringing in a good few youngsters.

Ironically our best spell was when we went 4-5-1 when KMac made his first two subs. Our midfield started to get theit foot on the ball.

I thought the worse when the ref said that they were having the pens at the home end. Looks like that was decided before the match as the only toss of the coin was to decide who went first.

Still a bit numb, but not dejected.  I'm proud of the fight that we put up.  Barring an improbable turn of events, the die was cast at the end of January when Andrew Black decided he had to find the nearest exit and get out by the fastest possible route, regardless of the consequences.  Under those circumstances, to have continued fighting until May 6th was impressive.  I have no idea where we go from here, but today was a respectable - if not a triumphant - end to one of the more interesting seasons we have seen in a long time.

Over to you, Jed.  What's the plan for 2013/14?

Read bits of the thread during the game and couldn't believe the stick Flint got. Even without scoring he was our best player by a mile.

Interesting summer ahead, 5 scholars getting pro contracts before our fate was even known is a concern.
That said, on todays showing, fighting spirit aside there is a lack of quality in our team so they wont do much worse. For all that money thrown at it that's the poorest side we've ever had in the play offs and were a penalty kick way from Wembley. Weird game is football at times......

Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but my abiding feeling right now is that we've been spared the possibility of breaking our own minimum points tally record of 30 from 1993/94.  If we had scraped through to Wembley and scraped through again vs Yeovil, I have a feeling that that is exactly what would happen.

I'm already fairly convinced that this is the fate that awaits whoever wins on May 19th.  Can't see Yeovil or Brentford doing anything other than filling one of the bottom three places next year.  (Bitter?  No!)

If you look back over the last few years a good few of our best players have been inexperienced youngsters when they came here - Ferry, Foderingham, Thompson, Flint, Austin. Not sure we've got the same level of results from the experienced pros we've signed, (probably) on decent wages.

I am very proud Swindon Town fan.

At times we lacked quality, at times we lacked composure but we never gave up. To come back from two goals down was fantastic and that Flint goal and the celebrations is something I will never forget. Going completely mental and hugging complete strangers is what being a football fan is all about and makes all the shit seem worth it.

KMAC did a great job, showed lost of passion and changed the formation which really got us back in the game. Collins did really well when he came on, and Wes made a few excellent saves.

The town fans were brilliant, great support unlike the Brentford fans who were silent apart from the two minutes after their goals, thought they lacked a bit of class at the end but that is to be expected I suppose.

Penalties is always a lottery and fair play to Miles Storey for stepping up, took a lot of courage. I really hope we hold onto him for next season.

What an incredible season we have had, and I suppose it was always going to end in such a dramatic fashion. I hope we keep hold of most of our out of contract players and let KMAC build his own team and have another crack it next year.

I am completely exhausted and gutted but I am also heartened. Football can be a really cruel game and today has shown why we all love and hate Swindon Town.

Brentford boss Uwe Rosler:

"Swindon took us to the wire. But the way we played for 120 minutes, just 48 hours after the last match, was magnificent and we deserved to go through.

"My players never felt sorry for themselves and they never stopped.

"After what had happened before, and to concede in the last second again, for them to come back psychologically, I am privileged to have a squad like this in my first job in English football."

Swindon Town manager Kevin MacDonald:

"The character of the team has been fantastic all the way through the season.

"You saw that today, but the sending-off turned the game.

"Miles Storey showed a lot of character to step up there. I am proud of him, but someone had to miss."

Back home and sat here reflecting on the game and reading through the comments it has all been said on this thread and it is all I have ever come to expect being a Town supporter, highs, lows and everything in between, just very, very disappointed how it has all ended for this season.

Non too optimistic about next season either as the Division is going to be far tougher than this one was and I think that there will be a big turnover in players which will not help the cause.

Loved to be proved wrong.

Did he though? I thought he genuinely hadn't heard the whistle, didn't see any sign of dissent before he hoofed it.

Well, he did seem to indicate he didn't hear the whistle...but was Griffin Park that loud?

A game like that was a fitting end to our season. Promised so much but ultimately left us all deflated.

I'd say I'm looking forward to next season but the uncertainty is too unsettling for me.

What a game to end a season with so many highs and lows!

Nothing but pride in our players today. The character and effort at times was immense. Special mention to McCormack/Flint for their graft and to Wes for making some important saves. I can't understand the negativity Flint gets, no he's not a cultured defender set for the top but he is a commited performer who puts a shift in every game and doesn't shirk a challenge and at this level that'll do for me.

Kmac has come in for some abuse of late but his changes brought a good response and got us back into the game (still not sure how after the first half performance).

In a weird way im glad we're not heading in to the championship with so much uncertainty hanging around the club currently, which seems like a weird thing to say i know.

Right now i just want the board to come out and be honest about their ambitions/intentions. Where is the funding coming from? How long is Kmac's contract?

If we have to operate on a small budget then i wish they'd just come out and say that, then let Kmac get on with shaping a team built around youngsters and a few loans. Move on the high earners and start again.

I think most fans just want transpsparency from the board. I hope we get that soon and we can head in to the summer knowing where we stand.

Well I'm glad that's all over. Saves another disappointing trip to the soulless Wembley and we would have got torn to pieces in the Championship anyway. This season effectively ended during those couple of weeks when Black left, Ritchie left and we failed to sign the 3 players on loan. We've been short every since.

Over the two legs I thought both sides were poor. The officials were also awful. I didn't think the one today could be worse than Saturday but how wrong was I!? Every time a Brentford player went down he blew up. I can't believe he sent off Byrne for being pushed over?! Donaldson is a diving, cheating piece of crap, and the ref fell for his antics (almost) the whole game. Finally decided to book him for diving with about 10 minutes left. Cheers ref.

One thing that stood out for me over the two legs is how we seem to lack any sort of cutting edge in open play. Williams was so lively in the first half of the season. Spinning defenders, using his pace. Second half he's been abysmal. Did nothing over these two legs.

There aren't too many guys who I'm bothered about staying. Compare this side to the one that lost on the PO final a few years back - Austin, Paynter, Ferry, Douglas, Greer, Ward - there's no comparison. I'd like Fods, Thompson, Flint, Ward, Ferry, Macca and Collins to stay. Be great if Caddis came back too. The rest, who cares?

The close season is going to be extremely interesting.

It's been a hell of a season - for us, obviously, but also for the players too and they have shown great character.  I was one who rated Devera well ahead of Flint but full credit to both and especially Flint for stepping up and overcoming his weaknesses and to Alan McCormack for his leadership

Excellent post, KMac has another two years - which worries me, but I just need to know at what standard Jed and Co. are going to have us playing at next season - in with a chance of the play-offs or a battle against relegation on a shoestring budget.

He may be a bargain bin version of Andy King but Gary Johnson at Yeovil has proven a bit of astuteness at this level can still reap rewards.  Kevin Mac deserves a decent crack at next season and if he can keep the spine of the side together with a bit of wheeling and dealing who knows.

Interesting to see how the winner of ty final fairs in the Championship next season.  Will be a decent indication of how we may have faired.

Have to say though mos importantly, fucking well proud of the players today.  Never felt so flat coming into such a meaningful game but we can hold our heads high today.

Goodnight

Well, that was my observation and a result of flawed memory as I'd forgot Morrison was one of the 9. I only brought it up as I seem to remember Fitton being widely praised for investing in youth while Jed seems to be being castigated as he's clearly signed them as first team players. Let's wait and see what happens on the contract renewals front.

Looked to me like he was backing in to the man marking him every time he went for a long ball and getting free kicks for it more often than not. Think it was him that went down clutching his head when he got a light tap on his elbow.

Annoying when someone like that is playing against you, but we could do with someone big and strong up front doing the same thing.

I thought Collins did quite a good job leading the line when he came on, far more effective than Williams or Rooney (who took his goal brilliantly).

The bonus with Donaldson is that he's good with the ball at his feet and is an excellent finisher. It's a massive shame he resorts to dirty tricks to cheat.

Byrne was struggling with him from the offset and he played on it, which eventually led to Byrne being sent off.  He's far too small and so one footed it's unbelievable.  Both the Tottenham loanees cost us over the two ties.

Heard on the terraces tonight that McCormack is definitely off, as he doesn't like it here?  From his reaction at the end, I'd say that was true.  Hung around with Ferry and Flint a lot longer than the rest of the team.

Just watched the goals and penalties.  Didn't know their first was an og from Rooney or that it was Devera who scored our second.  Dreadful penalty from Storey, no power or anything.  Wes looked stiff as a board and didn't look like saving any.  Damn it, I really thought it was going to be The Valley all over again when Flint equalised, we went down to 10 and made it to penalties.

As we came up the drive to our house, my son burst into tears and announced 'I don't want to support Swindon anymore mummy, it's too upsetting'.  I know how he feels ........

Absolutely knackered after that. Brentford absolutely shat all over us in the first half and we were lucky to go in a goal down. The second half, however we were pretty bloody good after Roberts the useless bag of fucking shit gave the ball to Donaldson. Devera took his goal well and Flints goal was met with a good old style bundle on the terraces.
Collins coming on changed the game as we finally had someone battling for the ball and bringing others into the game. Moving Ferry into the middle did us no harm.
Fods kept us in the game at times but should not have been beaten for their 2nd. Also, just fucking stand up at penalties - his movement showed the penalty takers which way to go.
Byrne was fucking useless who was totally fucked over by Donaldson. His first yellow was never a yellow. Wad had a decent game as did Devera. Flint was not far off MOM. The midfield was totally non existent for the first half. Rooney and Williams were totally fucking useless.
I'd very happily see Williams and Roberts fuck off in the summer and replaced by players who may be technically worse but actually give a fuck.
Special mention again to the ref who was another shit cunt. Again Brentford players leave their feet and elbows in and nothing.  Again, their fucking cheating and diving went unpunished. in the 2nd half Donaldson was allowed to dribble the ball into the box with his hand and again nothing.
Did we actually get a decision on both games.
Fuck Brentford the cheating cunts and Yeovil are no fucking better.
Also lay off Miles. He had the guts to take one and he got it on target.

I can't believe how deflated I feel. I never thought we would go through, but was really excited at the prospect. To come back to 3-3 was an amazing effort. Really proud of the team for that. The sending off spoiled our momentum. Don't agree that Byrne was a liability, but must say that McCormack and DeVita overlapped well once he'd gone off.

Aden Flint was immense. I really hope that he is at the club a very long time. Gives 110% all of the time and looks to me to be improving each game. Made a good partnership with Ward too I thought.

Fodderingham kept us in the game with a couple of good saves. Never looked like saving a penalty though. Wouldn't be surprised if he goes.

Devera looked exactly what he is, a centreback playing out of position.

Luongo will be no great loss.

Byrne was ok. Had his hands full against a v good striker today.

McCormack is a trier, but, unless he is surrounded by better players, he struggles at this level.

Ferry is a shadow of himself when not in the middle.

Roberts is very one footed and past his best. Wouldn't be sorry to see him go.

Williams was awful today. Totally anonymous. He seems to have severe confidence problems. Can't afford to carry him.

Rooney was good in the box, but poor outside. I thought Collins was the same.

Storey was anonymous. See he's gone for the stupid haircut and silly penalty run up. We see where that has got him.

DeVita looked to have a solid game. Didn't do anything spectacular, but gave us a bit more forward momentum.

See you in a few months I guess.

It was meant slightly tongue in cheek but feel free to be insulted.

The criticism of Storey in particular was incredibly unfair, to blame Wes for not saving any of the penalties after he kept us in the game for so long is just ridiculous and suggesting Luongo is culpable for our loss on penalties over two legs is completely ignoring the fact his goal gave us a massive boost in the first leg.

I'm sure you're as disappointed as anyone but there were so many positives from today that you chose to ignore. I suppose you've overlooked MacDonald's decision to go 4-5-1 which effectively gave us control in midfield and handed us the momentum to mount a comeback?

Someone said the ref in the 1st game was poor. I think that today's ref did much more to ruin our chances than the other Yorkie.

There's no room for sentiment in football....ultimately SR has come up short, so questions need to be asked. It's a demanding position, SWS lost his knighthood for a lacklustre start to the season after winning Div 4.

Haven't bothered to read back through, and I've just got back in from drowning my sorrows at the pub ( :pint:) so apologies if I repeat anything/flog a dead horse.

So proud to be a Swindon fan after that display. First half was shite. Second half, with Kmacs very quick and insightful subs, was much, much better. The periods where we played the ball on the floor led to our goals, and the players can be nothing but proud as to how well they put their shifts in today. There were mistakes, yes, and people will be quick to villify certain players (Roberts/Storey/Luongo/whoever), but they all worked their socks off today, and you can't but help feeling sorry for them, as they have felt sorry for us (see various town player's twitter feeds for apologies/disappointment etc.)

Ref was fucking shite (and had a really shit moustache). Sending Byrne off for being shoved over by Donaldson onto the ball was a fucking ridiculous decison, especially considering the cheating that the Brentford players insisted on perpetuating throughout the entire game. If there was one team outside the Premiership that I would call 'cheating fucking cuntbags that sucked shite through a hose', it would definitely be Brentford. Simply on ungentlemanly conduct charges, they should have had players sent off three or four times. Donaldson deliberately placing himself in front of our centre backs and then backing into them, forcing them to stand their ground, and then appealing for a foul was such a blatant and repeated offence I am fucking pissed that the ref and linesmen didn't catch it and send him off for being a cheating bastard attempting to subvert the laws of the game.

That last minute Flint header is something I will never forget. I nearly knocked myself out jumping up and down in celebaration in my (low ceilinged) house.

We have had zero luck since the year 2013 started, and I will wager that it's only going to get worse this summer, with huge sweeping clearance sales of players, and any future redevelopment being put on hold. But, as a Swindon fan, I will, weirdly, cherish this loss for the passion and desire the players put onto the pitch, for the 1800 ST holders who turned up at 7am in the morning so they could go to West London and experience this.

We are Swindon. We have belief, we have passion, we have pride. And we will make it, one day.

On a more personal note, I am loathe to say it, but I hope Brentford win at Wembley, because if Yeovil go up I will never hear the fucking end of it. I wore my town shirt in the pub with pride tonight, and will continue to do so always. We were written off by so many (including the Sky commentary/pundit team, who were practically circle jerking about Brentford/Donaldson the entire match) , but we took it right down to the wire, and we can only have a deep sense of acheivement and pride in that.

We may not have played our best today, and our team may not have been as strong as it has been in recent years, but I feel we were cheated, and, in the future (I hope), we can look back on this day as one of the true epics.

EDIT: I retain the right to take some of this back tomorrow.

Just a guess but maybe a short run up minimises the chance of changing your mind where you are going to put it? Beppe signori used to take 1 step and was pretty good at it.

That said, I'd much rather storey took a long run up and whacked it down the middle. Ah well!

It wasn't a dig at storey, I just can't understand why some players do it in such an important game. You can't get enough power behind the ball surely? Some players have done it and done it well, but some players shouldn't do it.

I suppose you've overlooked MacDonald's decision to go 4-5-1 whic :doh:h effectively gave us control in midfield and handed us the momentum to mount a comeback?

I think you need to read my post again.  I said Storey's penalty was dreadful and had no power, which was true.  I was stating a fact not making a criticism particularly.   As for blaming Wes, I did nothing of the sort.  He got a knock at the end of the game, which subsequently affected his ability to get near any of the penalties.  A number of others have picked up similar points, so I'm hardly alone.

I haven't overlooked Macdonalds decision to change the formation, but you seem to have overlooked the fact it also coincided with him moving Ferry into his rightful position where he should have been from the start.

Yes, I am very disappointed and not feeling very well either, which isn't helping.  This season promised so much and for all the reasons that have been done to death, failed to deliver in the end.  Although I don't think we'd have been good enough for the Championship and subsequently struggled, it's unlikely League 1 will ever be so weak again.  Chances need to be taken when they're on offer, as they don't come round very often.

I heard yesterday that there were new owners ready to take over, but that was on the basis we were in the Championship.  If true, that could be why Jed delayed providing responses to questions.  Maybe he genuinely couldn't provide clarity until he knew which league we were going to be in.

WARNING - SELF INDULGENT RANT BELOW:

Scheduling - utter joke. To get pissed around as two games within 48 hours so we can play second fiddle to a contractual obligation game between fucking Stoke and Sunderland? Total treatment of the division with contempt.

Pride? No - just annoyance we gave a mediocre side too many goals to catch up from, never mind the stagger to the end.

The Brentford narrative  - really fucking annoying. Great "character"? Character to blow promotion through a selfish egotist taking a penalty when he wasn't meant to? No. To play the first leg as an utter exercise in cowardly negativity? Very brave. To blow a 3-1 lead? Heroic? To not finish off 10 men in extra time, plus an injured keeper? Great! Never mind the million realities. They won, therefore they had character. Utter brain dead result orientated garbage.

That's the annoying thing, we couldn't escape this division at it's worst for as long as I can remember. Anyway, that's that. Time to roll the sleeves up and get stuck into Jed Howeverhis nameis spelt and his random apostrophes until he coughs up what's going on.

A mate met Whippy through business...when he discovered he was a Town fan, he asked what he could do to make himself more popular with the fans...my mate somewhat jokingly suggested going in the CGH etc and meeting some of them. Voila, it came to pass.

I don't particularly have a problem with Jed's laddish behaviour, as long as it's backed up with substance in the role. So far that is debatable at best.

I think the problem people have is that there are still unanswered questions, still problems in board/fan communcation that need to be sorted out, distrust at their motives, no sign of a plan or core principle for the fans to sink their teeth into, just Jed ladding it up at the pub and on Twitter. I'm not saying he's not a professional businessman, but I can understand why some people would think he shouldn't be there.

As with the tie thing, it's a matter of presentation with Jed.  He needs to decide whether he wants to be Chairman, or everyone's best mate/drinking partner.  A couple of examples from his twitter feed from the last 24 hrs:

JedMcCoy @JedMcCoy   12h
@Charlotte_Lloyd ha.. Why thank you Charlotte .. Was u at griffin today ..?.

JedMcCoy @JedMcCoy   22h
@ChrisDGuitarist cheers Chris means a lot mate .. Griffin bar at 2.15 it is then ..;).. #COYR ..

Presentation matters.  And in my view, he doesn't present himself as a Chairman should.  Still not warming to him, I'm afraid.

You need to back your behaviour up with substance...the previous Board told us early doors 3 basic things 1 Not throwing money at it. 2 Start by tackling "low hanging fruit" 3 Money available for the odd young player identified as having sell on value.

So at first we saw...no agent fees, tidying up of the Winners...lick of paint and ad boards outside the TE, the pic frieze on Arkells/TE corner etc.  Purchase of Cox, Ritchie, Caddis, Ferry, Flint.

Jed came in and told us...if KMac still wanted Pack etc, it could happen. Budget for next season would match this. Boxes in the DRS.

If all this happens, then all well and good, of course we need to wait and see.

That's all I'm doing. Would like to see these links that prove Jed was lying, if they exist. Perhaps you could direct me to them Reg?

This is the quote...

"At Cre8 Publishing he was a director for one month before it changed ownership. Lee resigned from the board, he then moved to Switzerland and two years later Cre8 ceased trading – which he had nothing to do with."

...it's suspected that Jed may be economical with the actualite here.

Evidence people, show me some evidence that Jed is a crooked bastard and I'll happily believe it. Until then, I'm not going to judge him. The summer will reveal all I would hope, one way or another.

That theakston guy gets all indignant and goes on the attack when asked to back up his claims, all he needs to do is give us a link.

Careful now people, crooked is far removed from not having the ability and/or finances to run the club ;D

For me thus far Jed himself has, as someone has already started, all blag and blah blah without substance, continual "manyarner" to almost everything and virtually silent on where the club is headed.

There are however question marks about who has been invited to the board....

On another note it was interesting that Brentford were able to bring in 4 new players in the second that were 'rested' from the first leg. One of them, Trotta, we were unable to get near when he was on the pitch. We clearly had injuries but if PDC hadn't been such an intolerable ring piece and included some recall clauses on our loans, we might have been able to do something similar.

For our unchanged 11 to play 2 intense matches in less than 48 hours was pretty good going.

Yeah Watford but it was 7 years ago now. He's hardly had a glittering career since. FWIW i quite like him but don't think he's any better than what we have on a consistent basis. Where was he in the first leg for example?

I'm going to leave it now but I just hope that once the club finally receives the few million we'll get from the late Nigel (can't remember his surname) estate that it will be spent wisely and set the club up for the long term. I believe it comes with a clause that it can only be spent on the youth set up and stadium so that is something positive at least.

Speak to Roger Bunce he knows a lot more about it than I do. But basically a town fan left his entire estate to club when he passed away last season worth circa £3m or 4m on the proviso that it is spent on the ground and youth set-up. In the grand scheme of football it's not a lot but it's a hell of a gesture and if used right could help kick start the club. Last I heard his old faded scarf was now kept in the boardroom at the club.

Like I said can't remember his surname but just found the old thread on here after you mentioned it. Roger confirmed it's legit though, he has left pretty much his entire estate to the club.

Read somewhere in one of the topics that KMac said he only has a deal until the end of the season on the radio and said he would be talking to JEd tonight. If he will not be here then who will renew the contracts of the likes of Flint, Thompson and Mcormack. Yes the board carry them out but surely they will say they want to wait for the new manager to decide who they want to stay.  :hmmm:

Shaun Hodgetts asked if the paer talk was true that KMac only had a contract until end of season and KMac denied it - but didnt disclose length of his deal - but said he'd better go home and check his contract but that he expected to be here next season but had to speak to owners / chairman about budgets for next season so he can decide on players

It was also mentioned that there are 3 youth players invited back for pre-season so KMac can have another look at them before offering them a contract, not sure if these were included in the 5? reportedly offered deals

Just a guess but maybe a short run up minimises the chance of changing your mind where you are going to put it? Beppe signori used to take 1 step and was pretty good at it.

That said, I'd much rather storey took a long run up and whacked it down the middle. Ah well!
The best penalties are toe pokes down the middle. You control the direction and height easily.

I thought he had a 2 and a half year contract unless there was some get out clause if we didn't get promoted?  When did Shaun Hodgetts ask him this?

in terms of the 3 youth players being invited back for training, they are in addition to the 5 who were offered contracts.

You could hit a belter towards the far corner, but if the keeper guesses right!

Was asked after yesterdays game, the length of contract was always kept quiet, the press believed it to be 2.5 years but never confirmed for some odd reason.

It is concerning that they are looking at keeping so many youth players, that is potentially 8, that is a lot of squad places taken for next season with 1st year pro's, that is the most taken on that I can remember for many years

Oakley and Thompson could go on to have decent careers imo. I like Ferguson and Francis too but don't rate their chances as highly as the other 2. Waldon is a good forward but it's the hardest place of all to make it so has it all to do. The other 3 asked back have no chance imo. There are better lads playing college football.

We have let plenty of very good players go over the years who i'd argue are better then some of them kept this term as they were not up to the grade required. I'd love them all to make it and be big players for STFC,just cannot see it though.

Ta. I know you will have seen a lot more of them than me (which won't be difficult as i've only watched their brief cameo's for the first team plus the youth game v Liverpool).

I too like what i see of Thompson and i know Oakley is highly rated. Ferguson not seen enough (just the youth game when he did OK but maybe not the best game to judge) and Francis and Waldon look like they try hard which is a good start if nothing else. I'm happy we're giving youth a chance as no doubt you are, it is a worry for what might happen in the summer but whatever will be will be.

I would add, which i'm sure you'll agree, just because we've let good players go in the past, it's not a reason not to keep them on. In fact maybe it's more a reason to keep them on, so we don't make the same mistake again.

Well, I've hurt a lot more after football games and walking away from the stadium it didn't quite feel how a penalty shoot out loss should, or normally does.  Hadn't even crossed the rail bridge behind the ground before discussion and thought centred on next year.  We'll no doubt look back at this season in the coming years with fondness, just because of the rollercoaster ride it's been.  But ultimately we'll be kicking ourselves for not getting out of a very weak league one.  With all the money sloshing around the championship, and potentially more clubs in league one still on massive PL parachute payments, it's going to be very tough over the next few years for little old Swindon working on a shoe string.

On one final note, that celebration for our third was fucking epic.  Those few minutes will last long in the memory and we may never experience anything that dramatic again (depending how old you are!).  In some ways, that goal alone and everything that went with it was more than I was hoping for out of the game.

An interesting point that - anybody able to guess how he was able to do the seemingly impossible?  Is it just that nobody else tries to convert hoofers to ballers (perhaps thinking it safer to "play to their strengths"), or that the general standard of the opposition was different/worse back then?

More technical approach I guess, the continental way, and given the way football has progressed certainly ahead of his time in regards to the way he set the team up. We also played a division higher so the opposition would have been a bit more 'baller savvy.

the first few games when Kmac took over we played better football than we ever did under di candio. At coventry away we knocked the ball around the best i've seen for a few years and dominated them.

I think kmac came in and tried to get them to play, results started going against us and he went back to what had been working, as we'd been pretty direct under di canio

I want to see what he does with a pre season under his belt before judging

Karl Robinson made a good point on the sky coverage, premier league bosses are more likely to give young players to k mac because of his reputation with young players, that could be very good news for us in the loan market.
