Title: Coventry City FC v Swindon Town FC Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Saturday, March 2, 2013, 00:01:10
The Opponent –  Coventry City

So, the time has arrived where we can officially move on. New owners, new manager, and a bit more direction than in recent times. I don’t dread Adver Sam’s tweets as much now (Sorry Sam), I don’t hear Chris Wise on my radio with a tone of voice that spreads fear throughout me, and best of all, Red Jed has impressed me. Lets be honest, if you look at the guys Twitter profile you could be forgiven for thinking he is a bit of a wide boy, the kind of chap you would think twice about before buying a used car off him, but credit has to be given to him. The initial Press Conference on Monday was a let down, fairly vague answers that were well thought of in advance, but from that moment onwards it seems he has quietly gone about his business and has said bollocks to the headline stealing managerial appointment and gone for what would seem on the surface, a brilliant appointment for both parties. Welcome KM, you have big shoes to fill, but I honestly believe you are the man to take us forward and in to The Championship. I hope the masses travelling to the East Midlands today give him a proper welcome and when we meet Walsall at home.

And now we roll on to one of the more local away journeys of the season, Coventry City.  They were first known by the name of Singers FC, named after the cycle firms employees  that founded them back in 1883. Some 15 years later they changed their nane to Coventry City, and in 1896 Coventry City moved in to Highfield Road, which remained their home for 109 years before they moved in to the magnificent Ricoh Arena, which leads me nicely on to the next bit…..

The TEF’s very own Donna Porter has offered a fantastic insight in to The Ricoh Arena and has kindly shared this insight

It’s not just tactics on the pitch for visiting teams to the Ricoh. When the arena was built several things were designed to unsettle the away players. Whilst the home dressing room is spacious, a regular shape and a normal temperature with access to a warm up area that is undercover but akin to the outdoor temperature, the away dressing room is right under the kitchens making it hot and stuffy and the players only have access to the pitch for warm ups meaning, especially for winter/night games, the team is forced from one extreme of temperature to the other. To make the team talk more difficult the away dressing room is an irregular shape and has a pillar in the centre meaning not everyone can see each other. On the way to the tunnel the corridor diminishes in height so when the away team are approaching the home team they get the illusion that they’re a lot taller than they are. Finally, even if the above don’t work and the away team wins there aren’t quite enough showers for them and there’s no hooks for their towels.

Whether any of this really works remains to be seen and although some of it seems really petty there’s obviously thought been put into it and other clubs try similar tactics. The Emirates for example has a slippery surface for the away team to walk to the tunnel on. I wonder if our own County Ground employs any such methods?

Coventry homes some 320’000 people, some of the more famous past and present include Record producing train enthusiast Pete Waterman, Ex Sky perv Richaed Keys, England Cricketer Ian Bell, and bands The Enemy, and my favourite, The Fun Boy Three, I’m sure they did something with Bananarama?

What are they saying about us?

“We will get another 3 points, Swindon will fall behind the others, and the other teams are playing each other this weekend or higher mid table teams, so we have a team with no confidence, stability and a new manager who hardly knows the team yet”

http://www.skybluestalk.co.uk/threads/27569-If-we-beat-Swindon-tomorrow.

Coventry Last 6 –  DWLWLW (Currently 8th on 53 points)

The Irrelevant Facts – Coventry’s away form is much better than their form at home. They have played 17 games at the Ricoh this season and have only managed to win 5, hopefully we can keep it that way come 4.45pm. In the same amount of games they have conceded 21 goals and have only managed to keep 2 clean sheets.

The Threat – Last weeks threat ended up scoring the winner, not for the first time this season, which is why they are the threat I suppose.  To be fair, they have goals all over the park, but  Carl Baker and David McGoldrick have bagged 30 between them so far this season.

A Warm Welcome To – One of our previous managers not so great signings, Leon Clarke. With or without the Di Canio factor, I have always thought of Clarke as something of a knob.

Head to head –  We have met on 65 occasions and have won 20, drawn 18, and lost 27.

The Odds – Coventy  7/4   Draw 9/4    Swindon 7/4  Looks like Bet Victor think this  could be a tight one.  The inevitable Clarke opening goal is 5/1 with most outlets. I won’t be putting ahything on that. Although Samsung Win a Pro Contract fella Chris Smith is an even less appealing 33/1 with Bet 365

The Son Says – 1-0 to the mighty reds by all accounts. That will do me.

The Prediction – New era? Same winning away form I predict. 2-1 to us, a James Collins double sends the 2’110 STFC fans  amongst a crowd of 10’433 mental and delirious.

And Finally –  The phrase ‘sent to Coventry’ apparently originated during the English Civil War. It seems that in 1647 Royalist prisoners of war captured elsewhere in the Midlands were held in Coventry. In that robustly Parliamentarian stronghold the locals treated them as if they did not exist.

I'm sorry Mr Rosso, your pre-match write ups are normally excellent.
But you've not mentioned the whole Jimmy Hill era

In Coventry's heyday, I think they were the first club to lay on special football trains, and had a massive away following, which was all tied into the thriving local economy, built around the manufacture of cars

From what I gather, Coventry used to take thousands to every away game in the late sixties and seventies

I am going to have to abandon my usual 2-0 prediction as it is a cast iron, nailed on, guaranteed 100% FACT! that Leon Clarke will score against us. Fortunately though, James Collins supported Coventry as a kid so that pretty much guarantees a goal for him as well. Therefore...

2-1 Williams, Collins

Coventry in the east Midlands? No mention of The Specials? Disappointing.

After living just outside Coventry for two years and working in Cov with a few Cov fans I'm gutted that I'm 1,000 miles away. Especially with our new manager and board,  today truly marks the dawning of a new era.

2-2, braces from Clarke and Collins respectively.

My 2 year old has been running around singing the 'we'll never die' song to his mother's dismay this morning. It seems the whole world is a little more positive towards STFC today. I have a good feeling today and hopefully we can get back to winning ways with the 'new manager kick up the arse syndrome' that seems to have ironically undone us a few times already this season (Coventry and Colchester at home I believe).

Swindon 2 - Cov 0
Collins 12, 58

The first game for a team under a new manager invariably ends in a loss (random fact that I've probably concocted).  Coupled with the way we played on Tuesday and the fact that Coventry are going quite well, I think we'll lose today.

However, this is Swindon Town, so who knows.  Come on Town prove me wrong!

I was curious about our record with a new manager, here it is:

Di Canio - won 3-0
Hart - drew 0-0
Wilson - lost 0-2
Malpas - won 2-1
Sturrock - won 1-0
Wise - won 1-0
Onuora - lost 1-0

4 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses. Not too shoddy.

3-0: Rooney, Collins, Williams. Dominating performance. Subs made at the right time. Leon Clarke gets a red card in the first ten minutes. Fail to lose for the rest of the season. All the bullshit and uncertainty of the past month is forgotten.

Sounds like the ball got stuck under his feet, and was robbed by the Cov player, who sidefooted it across goal for a tap in.

Apparently the pitch has got more sand on it than grass.

That'll do wonders for the confidence. So many pitches are terrible at the moment, ours is pretty good.

Couldn't have started much better then?

That's the last 3 games we have conceded a goal from a defensive cock up.  A bit of a worry given how strong our defence has been?  Given we don't generally do well after we go behind, we'll do well to get a point today.

Right quick summary.

Horrendous mistake from Thompson. Plus the yellow card, bad start from him. But he's recovered well.

Our attack has been good. Some great little passing in triangles. Made two guilt edged chances, missed them. Plus flints off the line.

Also we no longer have 11 men in the box when defending corners.

Desperately unlucky, or just shit in front of goal. The choice is yours.

They are basically saying McEveley is playing shit!

Nothing new there then?

At the other end, missed chances costing us again.  In response to Batch's comment, we can't keep being unlucky.  Our strikers miss far too many chances that should be buried.

To be fair, Swindon were far the better team. We got a lucky goal after McShufty almost gave Swindon an early goal, and from then on it was all Swindon. We did not deserve a point to be honest. We are not good enough.

Couldn't have started much better then?

That's the last 3 games we have conceded a goal from a defensive cock up.  A bit of a worry given how strong our defence has been?  Given we don't generally do well after we go behind, we'll do well to get a point today.

Suffice to say that we did better than well  :D

I nearly crashed twice on the A419 when we equalised and scored the winner.  Massive 3 points, particularly as the majority of those around us all won as well.  Delighted for the team and supporters who went today, what a fab end to a shaky week.

Some big, big games left to play away from home and to be honest I fancy us to do better in them than those we play at home.

nope other end. I had to go onto the BBC web site to check who scored. Now in pizza hut next to Ricoh with my 2 lads in their town tops. Happy days.

Quality performance. First half was Stokesque. Second half we were better than them but not quite as dominant. Or rather not quite as many clear chances made.

Macca and flint telling the crowd to lift it when we equalised. those boys wanted to win, no settling for a point.

It's not about them though.  (Having said that, it is quite amusing that their heavily trailed 'Ultimate Support Saturday' away day to Southend a fews weeks ago produced an away following of 600 odd.  We don't need gimmicks.)

Just home.

Great win, and great spirit by the team after a terrible start.

Fantastic save by Wes to keep the score at 1-0 looks more important after the two goals.
That said it would have been a travesty had we lost that game, as we should have been out of sight before we scored had we taken our chances.

Happy for Nathan, as he played well when he settled down, and thought Alan Mac had a very good game in centre mid.

Hopefully with a week to work with the boys Kevin Mac can build on this & push on towards the Championship

Also i remember commenting to the chap next to me that you can see why paolo was always critical of the finishing from our strikers. they should of had us 4.1 up at half time. but they worked hard for the team.

My mom was Alan mac though. broke everything up through midfield and was quality. Ward was a very close second and was pleased for him to score.

great support today from the travelling army. had a 10min spell in the second half when we were quiet but soon got back into good voice.

also, Whits would know as he was near them, what was the song that your section was singing when they were jumping up and down etc. looked ace fun

Fantastic save by Wes to keep the score at 1-0 looks more important after the two goals.
Critical in the context of the game and don't know that I've ever seen a better reaction save of it's type

1st away game ive managed to get to for ages.....wow! The STFC fans were fantastic - so brilliant to be in amongst it.  Players were immense too - especially Thompson who recovered from his error to play really well.  Jay Mc makes some high profile errors, but overall worked pretty well down the left.  Alan Mac, Ferry, Ward were outstanding, and Foderinghams save from the Clarke header amazed their strikers as well as all of us.

Best game ive been to for quite a while.

Fantastic away day.

New stadium to tick off, 3000+ town fans, new manager, good performance, dominant in possession and chances, back from a goal down to win in the last minute, great spirit and unity between players and fans. Clarke doesn't score. Doesn't get much better than that.

In terms of players, ubiquitous wonder save from Wes, ubiquitous two missed one-on-ones from Williams. McCormack showed he could play in midfield today and Miller showed how far he is ahead of Navarro in that particular pecking order. Ferry outstanding as always. Luke Rooney looks bright and should not have been ostracised by Paolo. Other Rooney also decent when on. Flint won everything in the air. Ward back to his best without the weight of managing on his shoulders.

Get in a couple of loans (CM, CF and LB to compete with Mceverly, who looks our one likely liability at the moment) and we've got a great chance.

I've been to two away games this season. Stoke, and today. Last minute winners will NEVER get boring.

We pissed them, and but for better finishing (WILLIAMS), should have had about 5 or 6.

Special mention to the two CB's and two CM's. Ward and Flint dealt with everything thrown at them, and Miller and Mcormack got amongst them well. Mcormack MOM for me.

Only downside was Mcevilly's performance. Solid enough defensively, but far to wank with the ball at feet. Fortunately for him he was beaten to the accolade of worst player on the pitch by Wesley Snipes in the coventry defence. Worst Professional footballer I ever did see. Not suprised at all to see him involved in the fuck up for our goal (Murphy will be dissappointed when he see's that).

Fans were awesome in terms of noise. Fantastic turn out, Fantastic day, and so glad I was a part of it.

Onwards and upwards

Just back from the game going to sink a few in the Five Bells :pint: good game tremendous support from us today, had to laugh before the game Coventry fans tried to raid the pub(longford Engine) and did not realize there was about 600 STFC fans in the pub the police had to help them get away
Back to the game the lads never give up, support was great Alan Mac for me MOM Both Rooneys played well when they came on

Excellent stuff...thought we had fluffed it with the chances we missed....but we kept going and ground them down....

Great start for K Mac...

Right where to start.

The beginning. Wrong team selection, when I saw the team I thought all sorts. Wing backs, 5 in midfield, diamond. Playing Simon Ferry right wing was a pretty stupid idea in my opinion. His game isn't remotely winger like and he spent too much of the game too narrow, more on that in a bit.

Doesn't seem right going to watch a L1 game in a massive fancy stadium complex and spending pre match walking over to water to end up in a pretty tidy casino with bars and restaurants around it!!!

First 2 minutes were a disaster, we went from having a corner to being 1-0 down just like that, horrible mistake from Thompson.

After that it was all us, well certainly with regards to possession anyway. Although for the most part it seemed like we played a good number of decent passes before we got the ball to Roberts to not beat his man or worse yet we worked it back to McEvley who would give the ball straight back to Coventry.

Williams troubled their big lump 5 at centre back and twice in the first half he's done him, twice he's caught Williams who has stumbled and carried on (could have easily and probably justifiable gone down and got him sent off) first one the keeper comes out and all Williams has to do is roll it past him, he does but also roles it wide. Horrendous miss and no excuse. Second one a bit unlucky as its come back off the inside of the post and the keeper has done well to block Williams rebound effort.

Could have been going in 2-1 to the good at half time.

Second half was much the same, lots of possession but no penetration. Both sides more likely to kick the ball off the pitch then score a goal. The time wasting from Coventry was criminal.

Then 2 things changed the game. Firstly McCormack went down with what looked like a head injury but the ref allowed play to continue with Coventry on the attack. During the break in play the Coventry fans in the corner next to us gave us some stick and that kind of ignited the Town fans with seemed to lift the team.

As much as I thought KMacs team selection was wrong, his subs were spot on. Luke Rooney came on for the never a right winger Simon Ferry and added a lot. Actually having two wingers gave us a lot more width and stretched Coventry and unlike Roberts, Rooney was much more intent on getting the ball into the box, his corners were a lot better also.

Adam Rooney came on and we stretched them some more as they did the Town classic of getting deeper and deeper.

Anyway, we finally got a goal (which seemed in probable 10 mins earlier) as Flint came back geeing up the away fans as we bellowed we score when we want - I expected us to get a second, hopefully in the injury time that Coventry created with their time wasting. Anyway we got a corner, I said to Bennett that Flint was going to head it, he didnt but Darren Ward thankfully did.

Then the last 5 minutes Coventry chased it by pumping up to Clarke which resulted in nothing.

Good start but I never want to see Ferry play right wing again...

think you're referring to the continental favourite 'that's the way we like it'. Great footy song.

We were so much better than them today, could have been 4 or 5. Only Mceveley was cack, everyone else were good. Great atmosphere for the whole second half - brilliant.

tbf Kmac only turned up yesterday so I am not surprised he got the starting 11 a little wrong, but it was important that he didn't just pick the same team as the last few weeks.

Any mug can pick a team from our squad, the sign of a good manager is being able to change a game, which he did, so you have to give him the credit for the 3 points.

I'll tell you who would have grabbed themselves a hat trick today, Paul Benson.

He's exactly the sort of player we are missing, a 6 yard box poacher.

Think we also need a right winger and left back in ASAP.

To be fair to K Mac I can understand his thinking in playing Ferry right midfield, Coventry packed the middle of the park and playing a narrow game would help to combat that and help us to keep the ball... Like others have said though, bringing on the Rooney(s) at the correct time was vital to changing the game, which is the mark of a good manager, concise decision making...

Met Jed The Red (what a lad :) ) he was emotional at the end and had a right old laugh with him and his Mate.
Also got to have a chat with Kevin MacDonald and you can see he is a players Manager.
I stood around after the game inside the stadium and chatted to the players and already they are more relaxed. They were buzzing after that and rounded off a memorable day.

We played some great stuff today and made Cov look poor. Midfield got hold of the ball.

Finished off the day with a live interview with Sean Hodgetts and yes was proud to tell Wiltshire that we are a special Club............Life after PDC and a day that was so desperately needed.

Luv It and was home so early. Makes my Swindon trip seem very long.

Don't intend to spoil this thread but fook me, you changed your tune a tad swift. Which is good to hear.

I've warmed to him over the last few days as well, mainly due to the handling of the KMac appointment and the appointment itself, but also ST prices. It's been mentioned that the old lot would have done the projections etc, which is probably right, but Jed and Co could easily have stuck 5% on top if they'd have wanted to. Hopefully the fact they didn't is a sign of their intentions.

Anyway back on topic, fantastic day all round today. Nice pint and bite to eat in the Greyhound beforehand which is a real hidden gem, then 20 minute walk along the canal to the ground.

Not sure whether its already been mentioned but the organisation was dire. Got there at 2:45 and didn't get through the turnstiles until 3:05 with a queue still behind us. 5 turnstiles for 3000 people??!! Took them a long time to open up another section as well and it was all a bit chaotic for a while, reminded me of Millwall in 2010. Not sure why the numbers were so unexpected when we'd sold nearly 2500 in advance, but hey ho.

Not much to say that's not already been said on the game itself. Should have been at least 2-1 up at half time, Williams I think was unlucky more than anything especially with the first chance, but really needs to start putting some of those sorts of chances away. Wes' save was a turning point, had a feeling we were going to get something from it after that. Macca MOM for me, won everything and made a general nuisance of himself in the middle of the park. He seems much more comfortable there than he has at the back recently. Agree that McEvely's form is a concern. Can't really remember the last time he had a good game, Notts away maybe.

Fans were a credit to the club today. Phenomenal atmosphere in the second half, will remember this one for a long time.

Oh and Clarke's still a lazy fat cunt.  :D

Dropped the missus in Birmingham for her usual shopping trip, then a 25 minute trip to the ground. Went in the Longford Engine but couldn't be arsed to wait to be served so walked to the ground. Lovely stadium and excellent facilites (another bog wouldn't go amiss though). Amazing support by us. I so pleased to hear we took 3000. The rest of the ground resembled a reserve game attendance though - their ground really is too big for them.

To the game - I felt sorry for Thompson but it was a real howler. Thankfully he didn't put a foot wrong for the rest of the game. Awful miss from Williams but worked hard(ish). Our packed midfield were superb, but we seemed to be playing with one winger, with no one out on the right. There were a number of occasions when we couldn't pass it out from the back because of the lack of width. The game finally turned our way when we replaced the out of position Ferry for Rooney L. and the tiring Collins with Rooney A. It's a shame Roberts didn't come off earlier as De Vita did more in 5 minutes than Roberts did all game. I couldn't see the first goal but it looked very scrappy on the big screen replay. Brilliant header by Ward for the second.

So we've finally put to bed the 'can't win when we fall behind' hoodoo. We can bury it with Di Canio.

Of course though I wasn't there and may be speaking out of my arse.

There was a large kerfuffle outside the ground but the police intervened pretty quickly and were hitting people with batons and stuff.

We were waiting for a bus to go to the town centre and a group of Coventry cunts were having a pop at a few Town fans in the bus queue, but nothing happened there.

Great result, thoroughly deserved. We played some really nice stuff, knocking around really well, little triangles of passing even though the pitch was awful.
They were one of the worst sides i've seen this season. Their defending, especially first half was laughable and Williams missed two one-on-ones.
How we didn't go into half time atleast 3 in front I don't know.
Having said that, if it hadn't been for a great save from Foderingham with about 20 mins to go from a Clarke header it could've been game over.

On the whole, convincing performance, deserved victory and to score two goals in the last five minutes is a great way to win a game of football :)

Absolutely.
Fucking.
Brilliant.

Most of the relevant points have already been made but what the fuck...

That goes into my all time top 10 away games. Beautiful day as it turned out, met a few chums before the game at a cracking pub called The Greyhound, right next to the Coventry canal, a couple of miles from the ground.

Fantastic support inside the ground. I have never been to a game where we have trailed for so long whilst completely out playing the opposition. Round about the 82 minute mark I was resigned to it being 'one of those days' but the boys had other ideas. I said after the Colchester game that we have the look of a promotion side and I saw nothing today to change that view.

It would be churlish to single out anyone for criticism, other than to agree with the posts stating that Simon Ferry is not a right winger. Outstanding performers for me were Wes with that save. That was one of the best saves I have seen from a Town keeper and had he not made it and they had scored, then astonishingly, Coventry would have almost certainly gone on to win. Other than that, as has already been said, Nathan had a tremendous game after a nightmare start. He didn't let it upset him and he looked really good. Well done young man. Other than that, Alan Mac was fantastic at centre mid and though he is as frustrating as hell at times, I love the way Andy Williams plays.

I've not seen this mentioned elsewhere, but I thought it was a bit of a shame that Kevin Mac didn't come over to the fans at the end. I suspect that the reason was that, not being an egotistical man, he wanted the players in general and Millward in particular to get the credit and that's fair enough. He probably did not want to be seen to be 'hogging the limelight'. If he had come over though, no one would have thought that and it would have rounded the day off perfectly. Not having a go, just an observation.

Listened a bit to BBC Coventry & Warwickshire on the way back - they are not happy fans. Many actually see administration as preferable to their current situation. All their fans who phoned in (probably not Dan as he was off celebrating 3 points as has been pointed out already!) said we were way the better team, as did Lee Carsley as did the presenter. When that happens you know you've been good.

That was beautiful.

Just beautiful.

FACT!  8)

P.S. Thought their little garden of remembrance with turf and soil from Highfield Road was a nice touch. Never seen that before.

ref: Roberts. Saw a few people say they didn't think he did too well. I though he did OK myself, some nice quick passes and interplay. But he didn't quite have the cutting edge I guess.

Also, it was kind of bizarre, Coventry had a very healthy home attendance really for league 1, 11K+. But it really did look like they were rattling around in an albeit very impressive stadium. If that sized crowd had been in the CG, it would have been full :) What the hell must it have been like playing Darlington!

Absolutely.
Fucking.

Wes save was top draw. Also it was about the only save he had to make and that's why he's the best keeper in the league.

He can and does pull off top class saves anytime no matter what he has or hasn't been doing.

Great win and great way to start this new era. When you look at the table tonight it's shows how big a win that could be in a few months time. We're now 4 points ahead of 7th with a game in hand and a better goal difference.

It'd be genius if a new manager came in this week, got us in the play offs and we had a two legged tie with Swindon. Then you'd see liberties.
Yeah but seriously, we could trash Swindon..it's such a craphole, would anyone know any different? I suppose we could break the Magic Roundabout...

Was a big result today, a win for Coventry would have brought them right into the promotion race and left us struggling to turn the poor form around.

I thought Miller was quietly effective today as well.

Wes save was top draw, shouldn't be too long before he is considered for an international call up.

I move back to china next friday after 7 months back in blighty.  This was my last game for whats probably going to be at least a year and tbh even when we were losing I was happy with the performance.  Friend who works for Cov said we had 3670 there today (not sure if theres been an official announcment yet).  I think today showed that PDC is not bigger than our club, so many fans and such a good performace from the team.

Also, the players now know that they can play and win and that it's down to them and not the 'PdC factor'.

Could be a bit of a monkey off their back.

I sensed after the Bury/Preston games a lot of fans, myself included, thought the game might be up for us this season - this result/performance has got everybody's confidence back

Was listening on the radio on my phone up until about the 80th minute, then I had to start getting my little boy ready for going to the ice hockey tonight, so had to stop listening. Got into the car, expecting a droll post-match dissection of a tough loss, only to hear we'd scored two in the last 5mins. Gutted I missed the goals, but happy for the boys, sounded like an awesome match to be at!

I reckon through Fraser's coaching, he just managed to stretch that extra millimeter that made all the difference. It can't be proven either way of course but I think we all know who should get the credit for that

First the negatives. What a souless fucking shitbowl to watch your football at. Like the club itself their mascot had seen better days. Also, the pitch was shite.
Thats the third game on the tro we have played a truly woeful side. Unlike PNE or Bury thuogh, we won and did it after being behind. Psychologically that won;t do any harm.
The line up was interesting but I could see the logic as we had been truly shit in midfield on the last 2. Miller had a cracking 2nd half and macca wasn't far off MOM. I'm not a fan of Roberts but thought he did OK today. Awful fuck up by Nate Dog but he had a good game and we look a lot better team wth him at RB. Collins tried hard but Williams bottled out of so much. He looks like a player than needs a rest. He's got it all there to be great player but its just not working. Adam Rooney, who i thought was a useless cunt, really made a difference as did his namesake.
The save from Wes was superb. He had to palm that ball a long way and did so. The guy is pure quality.
A well desreved victoy and great support from Town. the stewards were like rabbits caught in the headlights and Town were still piling in 15 minutes after the start.
As for trouble, we parked about 25 mniutes from the ground and on the way there and on the way back both groups of suuporters walked side by side quite happy. I thuoght it was quite a fiendly trip
MOM for me was Flint.

I'd only done the occasional away day before last season but that has to be about as good as it can get.
I also went to the Greyhound; nice pub with good beer and decent food.  A pleasant 20 mins walk along the canal towpath in the sun and then the superb atmosphere inside the ground.
This would have made it a great day regardless of the result but the way we played, the constant singing and support from the Town fans and then the finale made it a brilliant day.
I don't think I could have written a script for a much better match day than this.

I had to check this season against 2009/10 under Wilson.

Two league tables:

From today (http://swindon-town-fc.co.uk/LeagueTable.asp?CompCode=LGE&Season=2012-2013)
  - after 35 games

From 13/03/2010 (http://swindon-town-fc.co.uk/LeagueTable.asp?Date=2010-3-13&Season=2009-2010&Tier=3&TableType=standard)
  - after 35 games in 2009/10

I think you're right.  We're definitely better placed at this stage than we were then.  Norwich were well away by that point 3 years ago...but no one is pulling away this year.  Yet.

Went to bed thinking it, woke up thinking it, will probably think of little else all week 8)

If we go on a similar run to what we went on prior to Bury, that will leave us undefeated through to the end of the season. In spite of having some particularly tough games on the run in, I believe this team is capable of that. If we can achieve that, it should be enough to get us up.

Absolutely Jan.

Going into the last 10 minutes though, I was thinking how weird it would be if we lost, as was looking increasingly likely at the time. It would have been so out of keeping with the rest of the day - the journey up, the weather, the pub before, the stadium, the performance, the support, it was all perfect apart from the score line. I don't believe in fate, that's bollocks as far as I am concerned but you could be forgiven for thinking ever so briefly that we were just meant to score those two late goals.

Like others i didnt even know who scored the 2nd until we got back to the car , spoke to some cov fans on way back and they said we deserved to win and were very gracious in defeat. The only trouble i saw was 2 swindon fans having a go at each other at half time , with one threatening to stab the other . It was quite funny and pathetic actually as i knew one of the twats.

A bit off topic here, but Swindon to Coventry is a rare example of a journey where cross-country really is the best route.  All of the blue line drivers (ie prepared to make big detours just to stick to motorways/dual carriageways, or because the satnav is telling them to go that way) are really missing out.  Across the Cotswolds via Stow or Burford really is the way to go for a trip in that direction.

Our form dipped hugely once we were in a position to capitalise and we almost limped over the line to reach the play-offs. We picked up only 6 points from a possible 18, winning only once, drawing three in succession and losing twice.

One thing that should stand us in good stead as it becomes tighter is the fact our GD is vastly better than teams around us.

I'm also firmly in the no play-offs camp because I sincerely doubt I'll be able to afford the trip.

When I lived in Kenilworth I used to make that journey frequently, either to Swindon or to my parents in Oxfordshire - easily one of the most pleasant routes to drive.

Had a fair few beers on the way up via the fosse, had a couple more in the Rioch Casino which was very impressive. Worst start possible going 1 down but we bossed the remaining 90 odds minutes. Went mental when we scored both goals and thought our support was first class. We were still in the Rioch car park at 6pm having a beer by the mini bus whilst waiting for tail Enders who had wandered off ! Was a lot of police with batons drawn right outside the our turnstiles but most of the attention seemed to be across the dual carriageway near the Tescos. Went home via motorways but didn't care at that stage about roadworks etc. A great away day.

I was up in that area as well, one lad looked in right pain after the bundle celebrations for the equaliser.

Think the coppers were a bit concerned about the two really young kids who got knocked around a bit in the celebrations.

That was me, got bundled over (twice) and second time I got pushed over smacked my jaw right on the coppers knee and onto the concrete step! The first time was my mate who had his ankle twisted around a seat and his body was the other way, was in pain and limping but a few beers on the way home sorted it out!

Still buzzing at 4pm on a Sunday...can't remember that ever happening after a Town game before (recently anyway)!

Mom for me was Macca, closely followed by Miller who swept up alot of the mess, but everyone put in a hell of a shift.
Pitch was awful and our centre mids had to take a touch before playing it, which slightly hampered the pace we could have injected through the middle. One touch passing was a definite no on that surface. Doncaster's pitch also looks just as awful.

All 3 subs were perfectly timed and I liked the strength of A Rooney and the directness of both De Vita and L Rooney, taking on the full backs. Something that was lacking with Ferry and Roberts.

Wes' save...speechless. How does he do it?? Agility, reflexes and spacial awareness is incredible.

Don't know if anybody spotted it but the reaction from the bench when we scored the winner was incredible. Just a pile of bodies emerging from their seats with fists pumping was a great sight and must have been such a relief given the time KMac and the rest of the backroom staff had to prepare.

Looking forward to Walsall. As many have touched on, KMac now has a full week to work with the squad which is probably a god send after being thrust into such a game for his first game in charge.

Brilliant day and one I won't forget in a hurry

Disappointed that i'm probably not going to get a chance to see Wes' save.  As already mentioned it wasn't included within the FL Show brief highlights.  When do the highlights go up on Sky?

Can't add much to the other reports, great to have been a part of though - days like that are why we go to football week after week, and was a perfect response to the last month or so of off field turmoil.

Agree that Macca had a great game in the middle, also think Collins was worthy of praise, never really got a sniff of a goalscoring chance but worked his socks off and was great with his back to goal particularly in the first half.

With some depth added to the squad no reason this team shouldn't be good enough to finish top 2, the way the players celebrated and what you could see it meant to them was almost as good to see as the performance.

Wes will be pleased to know that his save is (quite rightly) featured on the Player highlights which are now up

Edit: As has previously been mentioned it would appear ::)

That's my route to Swindon...and will be next week, too.

Think the criticism of Thompson was a bit harsh, not the worst mistake and Wes could have done better.

The Flint miss was the worst for me. He could have just stood there and it would have bounced in off him.

I agree about Flint missing....strange how we all lay into Williams, but Ward's goal yesterday was the first from a corner for ages....and Flint's headers regularly go tamely over the bar.  No pareticular complaint. Just feel responsibility for missed opportunities could be shared!!!

Real time it looked horrendous, then he followed it up with an obstruction earning him a deserved yellow. At that time it looked like he may have to be subbed to me...

BUT

what a recovery. He didn't brick it, or hide in the game, or anything like that. He composed himself and had an excellent remainder of the match. We've all seen experienced players go to pieces after a dodgy start, Thompson did the opposite.

-----------------------

With Flint and corners it seems to me his job is to nod it back across the box. I wish he'd take a run and launch himself at it once in a while!

I remember someone posting a ridiculous stat on the number of corners taken since we last scored from one. Since that post it has been in my mind every corner we had. Any takers on a figure?

Unfortunately I don't have membership for Player, but have now seen it via the sky highlights.

Slight understatement from the commentator 'Foderingham did well to save it'.  Did well?!!! It was an immense save.

For someone so tall his directional heading ability is lacking somewhat. He could be as good as OST - and look where his goals got us.

Luke Rooney seemed to be putting in some good deliveries from corners. Maybe he got lots of practice when made to train on his own/with the youths.

Coventry fans pretty gracious on their forum to be fair. They must be sick!

On cloud 9 personally! :)

Got to say, I've never seen such a gracious set of fans than Cov's lot that we saw after the game. They must have been gutted to throw away that lead but we must have had 7 or 8 different people come up to us in the bar after the match saying how good we were/that they thought we'd go up etc.

Just a little thing but it was noticeable and gives a bit of a counter to the reported flare ups seen elsewhere.

It flared up in the car park a bit.  Saw a bit of stickwork from the coppers twatting people on the legs.  Seemed inevitable that it would continue out of the coppers sight.

I didn't see any trouble before or after the match. I walked back to the car with Coventry fans and they were all gracious in defeat.

A Cracking Day Out Grommit!

I'll say one thing about The Ricoh, the stadium helps with the atmosphere. It may have been half full or less but the noise carries really well in there.

A brilliant performance by The town and a well deserved win.

Did anyone else see the way MillWard celebrated with each other after the whistle? It looked like the weight of the world had been lifted from their shoulders.

COYR!
