Title: Neville W
Post by: Talk Talk on Monday, February 18, 2013, 19:06:36
It is with sad regret that I have to post the passing of Neville W, Terry Flowers in the real world.

Terry died last Monday of complications after being in hospital with pneumonia for a couple of weeks.

He was only 53 and I am sure he will be missed, not just on here for his punnery, but he was a real Swindon Town fan. Having met him many times at matches and beer festivals he was a genuinely nice man. Terry lived on his own in North Swindon, I do not know who he leaves, but I understand his sister is dealing with his effects.

RIP Neville.

That's awful news. :(

As much as I groaned about the punfests, Terry (Nev) was a very nice bloke who I met on a few occasions.

RIP Terry. The world is missing a punster short.

RIP nev... if you could I believe you would have chosen this for us. It's called Afterglow by Helen Lowrie.

I'd like the memory of me,
To be a happy one,
I'd like to leave an afterglow
Of smiles when life is done.
I'd like to leave an echo
Whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times
& bright and sunny days.
I'd like the tears of those who grieve,
To dry before the sun
Of happy memories that I leave
When life is done.

RIP Neville, one of the few TEFers I never had an argument with, your passing genuinely fills me with sadness and for me is more important than Paolo quitting us.

Managers come and go as do players but lifelong Town fans cannot be replaced and never will.

Deepest condolances to his family.

Bill Shankley once said "Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that."

Actually Bill, it isn't, when you think about it.

Nev (Terry) I hope my grammar was up to your high standards.

Well, what a fucking end to a fucking miserable day. 53 years old for fuck's sake. Thing is, when you're one of 10/20k supporters at a town match, you're one of 'us'. We don't know each other (probably), but there's still the feeling that we're all in it for the long haul.

And we have good fun, win or lose, and we see the future (Paolo), and the past (Hart) and you know what? It doesn't really matter. We're STFC. Fuck the FA, the FL, Jed, the fucking money men that mean the PL is a closed shop. I'd rather we were in the Southern League and had 4k supporters for a supporter-run club.

I've drunk a couple of bottles of wine...bollocks to football, it's only the supporters that matter.

It is usually up to the family to decide on donations or flowers or whatever. Perhaps we can do something collective.

Club have come back to me to say Media dept is investigating to see if the team sheet thing is possible.

Thanks Flash, that's good, and see below.

Update on the funeral from my lady:

Quote
Terry’s funeral is next Tuesday the 26th Feb at 3pm at the crematorium.  His family don’t come from Swindon, but his parents are having his funeral here because of his friends.  Nothing has been in the paper and I’m not sure if it will be.  They are asking for donations, not flowers, to the intensive care unit at the Great Western.  His sister is trying to get an announcement in the Swindon Town programme for the next home game, but as that’s not until next Saturday, it might all be a bit too late.

I am sure that anyone who is around on Tuesday would be more than welcome. Would anyone like to take on a collection? I'm rather swamped with work at the moment. A PayPal account would be good I guess.

A mate told me about Nev's passing last night and I felt genuinely sad, even though I'd never met him.  A salient reminder that each poster has a real person behind the Handle and Avi (well most of you).

As JFW said earlier in the thread, every time I see Paolo written incorrectly, I always think "Paolo, it's Paolo" and for that I'll remain grateful to Nev.

RIP indeed.

I am sure that anyone who is around on Tuesday would be more than welcome. Would anyone like to take on a collection? I'm rather swamped with work at the moment. A PayPal account would be good I guess.

No takers then, that's ok. I have taken tomorrow and Friday off work and have emailed the GWH as they have a Just Giving account to see if we can divert a collection to the Intensive Care Unit. I will let you know what they say but that would be an easy way to get the donations in.

If they can't or won't I will go to plan B and put my PayPal and bank details up by PM for anybody who would like to contribute. The idea is that if we can get collections in by Monday then I will be there at the funeral on Tuesday and can let his family know that we have done what we can.

So okay, he wasn't a close friend but I feel this one. His neighbour described Terry as 'a Swindon Town fanatic'.

Sing up for Nev on Saturday.

I think there should be a Neville W tribute on here, something like naming a forum after him.

How about the Neville W Punfest forum, for all jokes etc.?  Would be fitting, and would associate a smile with his memory.

Title: Re: Neville W

I'm sure they would. We're owed a shirt as part of the package we paid for anyway. The name shouldn't make a difference.

Maybe ask if the squad can sign it?

Title: Re: Neville W
Post by: Talk Talk on Friday, February 22, 2013, 23:04:15
Well done everybody, it is going well. Thank you.

I really like the idea of auctioning off a signed shirt. Nice one Chalkie (your reward will be a bag of soft tomatoes). The forum rename is spot on. Long live the memory of Nev.

On a personal note I watched my mum die in hospital from pneumonia a few years back. I couldn't believe that nothing could be done to save her, with all of the medical technology available. So with that in mind this is a very worthwhile cause. Perhaps with a few more quid in intensive care wards she and Terry might have made it through.

If you haven't donated, are going to the match tomorrow and you are in two minds about contributing then maybe you could have one pint less at the pub and chuck the price of a beer in instead. It would be appreciated.

Dear Posters and Donators

I just wanted to say that all Nev's family would like to thank you for your best wishes and kind comments. Talk Talk gave us the posts and we were floored...this was a side of Terry/Nev that we knew nothing about, but I can tell from references to his punning capability and Chief of Grammar Police that Neville was definitely my brother.

I can promise you that anyone who ends up in our position at the ICU in GWH will always appreciate the donations you've made especially as it will all help with staffing and equipment - these people are amazing and worked so hard for Terry, but it was not to be.

For me, Swindon is a lonelier place now, but next time I drive through Swindon on match day and moan about the traffic (sorry!) I'll be listening for cheers and ref abuse in his memory.

Once again, many thanks, and we'll treasure your comments.

Sis.

I think this has given Nev legendary status on the TEF. People will mention him or more likely correct a spelling twice with an it's in between and new members will ask who the hell is Nev? It will be explained and this thread will be linked over and over again!  It will probably keep Paolo's name in the forefront forever too!

Paolo, it's Paolo!

Nev must be looking down chuffed as fook that he has had such an impact! A run of the mill poster, understated, and it seemed his passing affected more people than he would ever have thought when he was alive.

Long live NevilleW!  Even if only in this thread!

Echo all the above. Forum's not the same without Nev, County Ground not the same either. RIP Terry

Two years on, I'm sure Terry is around somewhere enjoying this season's ride

Resting well Nev, will have a beer for you at the Crawley match as you loved your ale  :pint:

Nev will never be forgotten, along with my other STFC mates that have sadly left this world.

Good work :)

The only significant and lasting contribution I have had to the TEF over the years is my suggestion to name a forum after him.  Gives me a warm feeling inside as his memory lives on.

RIP Nev.

Had a donation to the GWH Just Giving site on Monday.

So sorry to find this page. Was at Portsmouth with Terry and wondered what had happened as I hadn't heard for a while. Such a wit. 2012 Christmas card said 'see you next year'..

Donation by Caroline on 28/06/15

Hope that you are enjoying the sunshine wherever you are Terry  :toocool:

Good to see that his memory is living on through us and some other fans that crossed his path..

I will be starting the fund raising for the player sponsorship soon, if we manage to raise more than is needed perhaps we should send some flowers to his family or make a further donation etc..  just to highlight the fact that his memory still lives on daily on the TEF..

What's happened to Shaw Rosso?

He's disappeared (from the TEF)

I sent an email to him and his wife replied saying that hes been sick but should be back soon. This was fucking ages ago. He mentioned something about an emergency visit to the hospital not long before he disappeared also. I can only guess, but I don't think it's good.

Shit, fingers crossed he's on the road to recovery now and just taking a break from the forum.

Its a difficult one, suspect not good but wouldn't want to intrude on his family by asking again.

Last on November 2014 :(

That's the thing, unless somebody knows them in the flesh, you don't know if somebody has left the forum not by choice. It's a horrible thought, but it's likely that other posters as well as Nev may have passed away in the last couple of years, just nobody from here knew them in real life.  It's really sad :(

Does no one know him in RL? I guess If I croaked it bobs orange, pets or otanswell on here would find out down the line somewhere. Admittedly after i haunted them most probably, but is a sobering thought about the internet generation.

For those that are not interested, and don't look in the Player Sponsorship thread, we have decided that any extra money collected from this will go towards a donation in Neville's name to the Red Army fund for building the roof on the Stratton Bank.

If anyone is interested in donating some dosh on Neville's behalf (however small) then PM and me and I will send you payment details so that you can contribute.

We will have around £30 spare so far, it would be good if we could get a half decent pot together to donate and bring it to the attention of his family.

Cheers
Berni

Without being too morbid.

I wonder how many ex posters are no longer with us but we have literally no idea.

That's the issue with such places, especially where people post under an assumed name and like myself don't know anyone IRL.
