Title: 6 nations
Post by: FormerlyPlymRed on Sunday, February 10, 2013, 15:30:09
Anyone else watching the rugby at all?

So many errors in the Ireland England match atm, not easy viewing.

First time in years that I haven't started a Six Nations thread.  Seems to be working so far.

Conditions are terrible, to be fair.  And the pitch is in a diabolical condition.  Not really surprised about the errors.

Yes but the majority are by Ireland so happy days. Great kicking by Farrell.

This, load of old shite. A bunch of fat blokes groping each other for 80 minutes. Hardly any skill involved, mostly about your size/weight.

Next time you want to comment on a sport, you might want to read up on it a bit first.

Not a free flowing game, or one that would have excited anyone new to the game or who dips in & out.  Samdy had it spot on though.  England played the conditions perfectly.

Fola - if that was a gutsy 1-0 win ground out in gale like conditions where we had parked the proverbial bus after taking an early lead somewhere like Coventry, you'd be raving about it.

Catch a ball, run, fall over. That's not skill, it's a sport purely about size. The people I know who play rugby are all shocking at football.

Likewise, (most) people who are good at football would be pretty shocking at rugby.

Anyway, if you can't appreciate the way in which the sport is played, get out of the thread.

Actually most would be very good at catching a ball, running with it and falling over. It's really not very hard. The 'skill' they lack is being over 6 foot and as wide as a house.

It actually reminded me of our 1-0 win at Colchester on Tuesday night. Like today, that was never going to be a free flowing game, it was always going to be about digging in, playing as a team and grinding out a result. It's just as satisfying in its way as going out onto a prefect pitch in the middle of September, pinging the ball all over the place and stuffing the other team 4-0. Anyone who finds that boring knows fuck all about sport.

Finally, there are threads on here at various times about F1, golf and other sports which I personally have no interest in. I let other people discuss those subects to their hearts content. Although I realise those sports have their merits, I know nothing about and don't much like them so have nothing worthwhile to contribute.  I myself prefer to (as Samdy alluded to) shut the fuck up. I would never dream of going on to a thread about The Ryder Cup for example and come out with "Golf's a boring load of shit". That would be moronic.

Just saying.

Well you should be able appreciate that to play any sport at a high level requires high levels of technical skill, whether or not you yourself are aware of what those skills are and whether or not you have any interest in that sport. As I said, if you don't like a particular sport, don't bother going on there and saying, "Ooooh, it's boring, it's rubbish, there's no skill to it".

If you do that, you make yourself look stupid. Believe me.

Still regarded as the greatest try ever and we'd love to see rugby played like this every week, but with modern
coaching, organisation and fitness it's probably unlikely.

Some people don't like the NFL or Basketball when you see huge players, but you can still appreciate the athleticism
and ball handling skills.

Admire the skill levels Fola, even if you don't like the game of rugby.

But I'm right, no?

Dexterity is defined as Skill in performing tasks, esp. with the hands.

Let's compare a goalkeeper in football to a rugby player. Who is more skilful with his hands? The goalkeeper who uses reflexes to dive, sometimes at point black range to stop the ball going in his net, or the rugby player who catches a ball and doesn't drop it, whilst running.

I'm presuming you've never played the game at any level Fola?

Passing a rugby ball accurately is nowhere near as easy as it looks, particularly whilst running at speed. Neither is recieving the pass. Timing of the pass and timing of the run are as difficult/easy as they are on a football pitch.

The other facets of the game are as skillful or otherwise as counterparts in other sports. Tackling in Rugby is more than just grabbing someone, in the same way as tackling in football is more than sticking your leg out.

I prefer watching football, but I loved playing rugby. Give it a go if you get the chance.

Motor Racing - skill

Boxing -skill

Using your rugby has no skill involved argument, Boxing is just two blokes beating each other senseless. Motor Racing the only skill involved is being able to change to gear at high speeds.

The things I can't stand about football don't seem to be present in Rugby, surrounding the ref, and rolling around the ground like a player has been shot, only to get up and run around 30 seconds later.

If Bosnia had a Rugby team you'd soon change your tune.

I don't understand why motor sport is considered a sport. Just driving round the same piece of road for what like an hour, then there are the people who go and sit in a stand just see some cars go past really quickly, its like standing by the magic roundabout cheering for a thamesdown bus

Not a big fan of rugby but the Six Nations is an ace tournament.

Rugby requires a lot of different skills and abilities to football. Organisation and team work are paramount, if just one player goes walkabout you're fucked. Tackling is an art form, bringing someone twice your size down isn't easy. Field position is as important as possession. Decent rugby is just as enjoyable to watch.

Same with American Football. The technical and organisational side is probably the highest of any team sport. Fitness levels are way beyond most sports, even the fat fuckers on the line would burn most of us in a sprint.

Always been interested in the development of the various forms of football. Not easy finding books or other reference material on it and especially on the evolution of the various rules. Think a lot of people forget or don't realise you were able to handle the ball in the original football rules, amongst other similarities with modern day rugby.

Apologies for going back a few pages but, out of interest, what's your take on the 100m sprint?  Surely that also is 'catching a ball, running with it and falling over', just without the ball catching and falling over bits.  How athletics manages to draw a global audience is anyone's guess.

Sometimes, you can be so badly wrong that your best course of action is to stop digging, walk away from the computer and then hope that, in time, everyone forgets what you posted.  Now is one of those times.

Sprinting is not down to height or weight.

Wrong on both counts. There was a documentary on the BBC before the Olympics about the science of sprinting, didn't realise there was so much to it.

At my school there was a guy who was 6 foot 4 and about 20 stone, he was obese, and this was in year 9. He was in the rugby team, when he got the ball he used to run and run and run, it would take at least 3 people to bring him down. As I've said 100 times, if you are tall and weigh a lot you are 50% of the way towards being a good rugby player. This guy eventually slimmed down and now plays at a relatively good standard.

I give up, Shane Williams was about 5ft 8 and weighs about 12 stone and was one of the best wingers in the world, Dan Carter who is possibly the greatest fly half ever is not a lot bigger, you just dont get it do you?

Bosnia has been in existence for 20 years, just to be competing is an achievement in itself.
I was expecting more of a bite than that!

Well this thread has been interesting to read....comments on the actual game itself...England played very well and made sure they took advantage of Ireland's lack of discipline. Owen Farrell had a great game and his kicking gets better and better! 1st win in Ireland for 10 years I heard earlier...grand slam is definitely on the cards for England!

I think I had 'Last thing Sunday night Syndrome', watching the highlights and they did a few up close shots of Andy in the box after Owen had kicked his penalties... (*now changed on Original post, cheers Samdy)

England being embarrassed by Wales.

Mind you they were shit against Italy last week so not really that much of a surprise.

They also have a history of bottling it when the Grand Slam is on the line.

This is Welsh rugby's second golden age.  Look at their record over the last 10 years.  Eighteen of us to every one of them.  Phenomenal.

Gutted.

This is Welsh rugby's second golden age.

Their first half against Ireland suggested otherwise.

Referee Walsh certainly had it against us today. Wales have certainly done the gritty stuff well, but for me England still looked good defensively even with this scoreline. The penalties (and to some extent the referee) have cost us the game and the championship.

Battered by the sheepshaggers.  Just not good enough!

That twat of a ref has really wound me up though, almost like he was on a job interview for media work.  Hasn't affected the result, but what a cock!

It's only rugby, nothing important.(Fishy Fishy)

I'd be more annoyed it was to Wales. Fewer things more annoying in the world than a gloating welshman

When I saw who the ref was, I couldn't be arsed to watch it, as I knew what the outcome was going to be.

Mightily disappointed, the best team deservedly won - but with some help from the referee who was nearly as bad as the footy one we had against Walsall!!

no excuses on the result or the fact we aren't as good as the press may say ,also  doesn't change the fact the  ref was a twat either tho

He is one of those people who don't care if anyone likes him probably because he likes himself so much. When players do it it's annoying but I lost count the amount of times today he looked up at the big screens after he blew the whistle. After reading that article I'm really suprised he is still refereeing big games like these.

As much as I'm still smarting from that defeat yesterday, the French finishing bottom below Scotland and Italy makes me feel that little bit better. It was only 18 months ago they played in the World Cup final.

I gave it 5 minutes of my time yesterday and the entirety of my viewing involved an issue organising a scrum.

Probably not the best time to tune in.

Not been a vintage 6 Nations due partly to the unbelievably poor weather.

Yesterday's Wales v England game was superb however, for the neutral at least...congratulations to Wales.

All teams have been inconsistent with Wales losing at home to Ireland after being monstered in the first half, England bulltying Scotland then losing momentum, Scotland being as cussed as ever and France, as is always a possibility, really not turning up.

England and France had a good autumn (unlike the Welsh)  with results v NZ and Aus, so the RWC is anyone's but home advantage for England and to a lesser extent Wales should help in 2015.

Less "learning" bollocks next year and better weather may = a better 6 Nations.
