Title: Australian Open Final
Post by: joteddyred on Sunday, January 27, 2013, 09:56:11
Murray has just won the first set.  Went to a tie break, but he destroyed Djikovic in the tie break.

Does anyone on here feel any affinity towards Murray?

I do.  And I like the way he doesn't seem to care about his image.  He's his own man.

Far more than I used to, although he isn't the most likeable of characters I agree.

I think I identify with grumpy bastards more than most. Playing very well at the moment.

Love him... a focused and determined athlete, dry sense of humour, but with a human side which we saw more of last summer.

And like above, he doesn't really care what people think of him, which i like.

Stfc Gazza used to love him.

He's a boring irritable fuck. Who cares.

I admire his sporting ability and want him to win. He's bridged the gap to Djokovic, (fading) Federer and Nedal before injury. He's truly world class right now. Perhaps the only Scotsman who can claim this in a major sport.

I quite like him, nice to have a Brit competing for honours at the top level in major sport...

I don't really see what his personality has to do with anything. He's a bloody good tennis player.

I did mellow during the Olympics, but it didn't last

Really? I thought that particular theory was disproved years ago. Being a proud Scot doesn't necessarily mean you're anti English.

Djokovic will win this now. Murray needed that 2 set advantage. Great game this. Both players putting in a great shift.

Bloody hell, didn't realise there were people out there that still believe that shit.

Aussie Open finalwise, I really can't see Murray winning this now, he had a chance to break Djok early 2nd set, didn't take it and Djok has taken advantage. Hope I'm wrong but the serb will win.

12 months ago that would be a certainty. I think Murray has improved his mental toughness enough to make it by no means a certainty now.

First player to break service will win I should think.

Novak taking Muzza to the cleaners no. Predictable.

Danger now he's broken. Lets see if Murray has anything left mentally in the next set.

edit: I take it back, he's moaning at the umpire, head gone?

Djokovic has been immense the last set and a half. Well worthy winner.

Not overly fussed about the tennis, but Irvine Welsh's twitter meltdown in response to it is most entertaining.

No shame in the result. Just beaten by the better (almost machine like) man.

He was unlucky. Looked to be playing well in the opening two sets, a few unfortunate slips cost him from really being in charge of the match and taking the second set and from there on it was all Djockovic... The burden of winning a major seems to have been lifted from his shoulders now though, I'm confident he'll win many more.

Murray beaten by the better player on the day! Went a little bit like the Wimbledon final against Federer in the 3rd/4th sets with Murray having no answers to Novak!

I think a big contributor to Murray faltering towards the end was the fatigue from having had a tough 5-setter against Federer on Friday, whereas Djoko had a short game against Ferrer on Thursday and 2 days rest.  Djoko was immense but can't help but feel it would have continued to close throughout if both players were equally fresh.

I like murray, and I honestly think he will be number 1 at some point. Think hes got a little extra to go to start to compete with Djok and Fed consistently

Perhaps, but then Murray beat Fed in five in the semi coming off an easy three setter against Chardy after Fed had gone 5 against Tsonga.  You win some, you lose some.

You may well be right.  I don't imagine those blisters we got a close up of while they were being dressed would have helped either!

Fuck knows how he played with the blisters - if that was me I'd have been laid up in bed for a week.

Watching them slog it out I was wondering whether there are any sports that are more physically demanding than tennis? They often play 4-5 hour matches in grand slams, not many individual sports where you have to be at your limit for so long.
