Title: The unofficial non-matchday thread
Post by: sonicyouth on Saturday, January 26, 2013, 14:55:56
these postponements are getting on my (man)tits, particularly as it is only one of two fixtures off in the professional leagues today.

however, as a result of Tranmere being a bunch of big blouses scared of a bit of cold, Bournemouth's home fixture against Crewe is the only fixture that affects us - but Bournemouth would need a victory of at least 22 goals to overtake us.

so what has everyone got planned instead?

and just because:

With my day of no football, I watched this instead;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXwDe9Ihf-g

Great footage! Worth watching just to see the clear red-card offence that only got a yellow card in the 2nd half! Otherwise Town could have won it.

My old man always talks fondly of Peter Eastoe and now I can see why.

Eastoe, Eastoe. Eastoe............That was my first ever Town team that started me off.

Trevor Anderson and of course the Witney boy David Moss.
As a kid playing football the player I always used to be  :)

Happy Days and thanks for posting this.

This clip has brought back some great memories, The Big Match Theme tune for me is even better than the MOTD one. All the kids in our area would be straight out after the big match for a game in the local park. Brilliant.

I loved every minute of that. Thanks.

I was shouting at the screen for their guy to be sent off after the rugby tackle. Of course though, there was no 'professional foul' rule back then.

Nice! How quickly we forget things like the backpass rule and (as mentioned) the professional foul are relatively recent laws.

A few what would today be late tackles, no fee kick and the players just got on with it.

Oh and the classic muddy pitch too :) Groundsmen are just too good these days!

Title: Re: The unofficial non-matchday thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Sunday, January 27, 2013, 11:39:55
That pitch was awful, I forgot how much Clyde Best was like Akinfenwa in girth!

I had also forgot how good Brooking and Bonds were, and Eastoe...what a striker, would score goals in any team.

Two things i like about that video....the couple of young Town fans by the corner flag packed in with the scarves around the wrist.

And the bit of tight skill Jenkins did to get the ball back to the keeper.....and all the West Ham fans applauded it.

The pass back rule has to be the best rule change in footy.

3 wins out previous 4 before a narrow defeat at runaway leaders

4 points from safety and played a game more than quite a few teams in the bottom half. Their results have improved with the new manager, but can they sustain it?

Not a derby. Not to us.

I'm not so sure!  We were playing derby games vs Reading and Bristol City decades before Oxford was even thought of.  I have a feeling that the next time we spend a few seasons in the same division as Reading will see the intensity of the rivalry come right back.

Quite.  We're about 20 miles away from Reading here - just close enough that you see the odd shirt/car sticker from time to time.  I would love to get that fixture back.

the 3-1 game was certainly enjoyable.

As previously stated where you grow up sure has an impact on which games are biggest - I always love us to beat the Bristol team - having live near Bristol.
I don't give a toss about Reading, my distain for them comes from their 'fans' trying to belittle Swindon despite many of whom had probably never been to Elm Park and used to journey to watch Chelsea before Reading became successful

Memories is the word.....was a great awayday of the past.

My first trip to Elm Park was in 66....we beat them 2-0, the Don scored a couple of typical high quality goals. I seem to remember it as an evening game, which improved the atmosphere. We averaged 13000 at home that season. Elm Park had about 5000 more in than for a normal game, so you'd reckon that at least 4000 must have been Town fans.

I had a disagreement with a light bulb on the football special, so a bit like Sippo, I was covered in blood, and had a lump on my head for years after.

They were shit when we beat them, but they have a lot of good players and Howe seems to know how to get them to actually play.

Assuming we have cash to strengthen with loans I still have absolutely no idea if we will finish top or just outside the playoffs. All the teams up there have looked good and shit at times.

I hope at the end of the season we don't rue the home games against Donny and Hartlepool. But I bet every team can say that about someone.

Some interesting games next Saturday as has been mentioned. The top 4 or all playing each other..

Bournemouth v Sheff Utd
Doncaster v Yeovil

also Brentford v Walsall

With that in mind, a draw at Tranmere would not be bad at all, although it goes against the grain for me to say it - I always want to see us go out and win every game.

If we could sneak a win there though and another next Saturday......easy tiger...one game at a time...

Missed the auditors being called in ...

http://www.courtoffside.com/forum/showthread.php?t=178984

Not sure if their backers might be getting cold feet with their team sliding down the table and the fear that throwing so much money at it and till they may not get promoted.

Something is not right down at Dean Court.

A bit of as similarity in how we were I guess but the difference is that Swindon as a club were more open and honest with the fans about the financial problems than they seem to be.

I also hear that several clubs in our league are currently under an embargo from the FL its not just us thats flying close to the FFP ruling the only difference is that we (Paolo) have aired our problems with the public rather than keeping them in house as other clubs are doing.

Thought Watkins said we were on or under budget, I suppose hitting the wage cap suggests otherwise? Not that it matters much now.

I hope for their fans sake they don't but it must be worrying times, especially after a similar thing happened to us when we as fans were either a bit in denial of it or that we were blissfully unaware of any problems.

I think with the Muff its going to be a shit or bust season.

City lose, Oxford lose.

Ritchie on the bench for them today what a waste of money

You could argue that them having Ritchie on the bench means he's still not playing for us, and that is of benefit to 'muff as, with him, it's possible we could have got more points than we have recently.

Not that I am saying that's the reason they bought, or that it's not a waste of money, but I've done it on Football manager before...

At this stage of the season, it's about grinding out results..often the margins are fine, a dodgy pen here, a 90th winner there. There's probably a few on here who can recall the 68/69 season when in Feb/March we won 4 home games on the spin 1-0 on mud heaps, with late or lateish goals in 3 of the 4 from Peter Noble.

:hmmm: This would be a job for a proper nerd (DV Canio).   I'd offer up 2 seasons as candidates that I've seen, 62/63 when only 4 league games, were played in Jan/Feb, and 85/86 when we ended up playing 6 away games in a row, as the CG was fucked after the notorious "strawgate"

Back then though, it was only really the weather to worry about...apart from when the Tory inspired 3 day week meant some games had to be played early afternoon midweek.

Now it's all sorts of shit...Sky, pointless International breaks, police advice, JPT  then throw in the some of the worst weather since 62/63, and it feels like it should be this season.

2,600 for a Div 2 game v Looton. 3,284 the week before v Notts C. We were crap mind.

Games were shunted to mid week or Sunday....they kicked off early to avoid using floodlights, and there also had been petrol rationing because of the Arab oil embargo.

At the time weird shit seemed relatively normal...having been a kid in the 50's you were used to austerity, the parents had been through a lot of the shit of the 20th Century....30's depression, WW11...so this was nothing.

Further being a bit political, seeing the downfall of a Tory government is always sweet...

Ah 62-63 was a decent season as I remember.  Wasn't that the season we played on a snow covered pitch in baseball boots, one of the few clubs in the league who staged games for a week or two.  Was that the season we went to Luton in the FA cup, the Hatters were a top flight team in those days and we beat them on their own ground, in front of the Match of the Day cameras.  Ernie Hunt absolutely ran the game, when interviewed he was asked if there were any more like him at home, he replied "We've got a lodger who tries!"  That lodger was Mike Summerbee!!!  I'll be happy to stand corrected if that was not the season.

A few people wrote Bournemouth off when they lost 5 on the trot.  Dropping 15 points should have seen them out of contention, but the league is so poor, it didn't.  Looks like they blipped at the right time and it will turn out to be a good move for Ritchie.  I'll be surprised if them and Doncaster don't take the two auto spots.

It doesn't take a genius to work out our dire home form over the last couple of months has cost us dear.

If we make the playoffs, i would prefer that Bornemouth/Donny got auto places as i think either of those teams would be tough over 2 games.

Would be confident that we could beat Yeovil, Tranmere or Brentford over 2 legs.  Sheff Utd would be harder and would prefer in the final.

I think Donny are all but up now. Bouremouth must fancy 2nd given their run in. If you look at Sheff U's remaining games they still have to face us and Brentford and failure to win either of them would see their chances of top 2 severely dented.

At least after today's results we know that 7 points will all but guarantee us a top 6 finish. 2 wins will probably be enough and 3 wins will mean the teams below cannot catch us at all. It's not out of the question we could make 2nd though but it would mean we'll have to win at least 4 of our last 5 games and hope other results go our way.

I'd want to avoid Brentford over 2 legs personally. Of all the sides i'd want to play in the play off semis it would probably be Yeovil. We've shown we can go there and beat them and we hammered them at home. They play an open style unlike Brentford and Sheffield United. I'd like to avoid Bournemouth full stop so hopefully they finish top 2.

none of it matters as Jed and Co are succeeding with their plan to prevent us from getting promoted

Not quite up to Tans' standard, but it hasn't gone unnoticed

Why would you be confident we can beat Brentford, when they've done the double over us this season?

We battered them at their place for 70 odd minutes and then lost concentration and conceded 2 goals in the away game.  Fair enough a loss is a loss, but i just fancy our class would previal against them over 2 games.

The fans could be the difference as well.  They brought around 600 fans for the game at the CG on a Tuesday.  We took around 1,500 to theirs on a Tuesday.  We'd sell out our away capacity at Griffin Park, not sure they would do the same at the CG.

I wouldn't fancy our chances of beating Brentford. I give you Clayton Donaldson. I'd have no problems saying we'd batter them twice but I don't think we'd win. Yeovil or Tranmere, yes, Brentford, Sheff U or Muff, no.

The Brentford away match could have ended up in a 5-1 defeat. We got absolutely battered second half and a combination of Wes and the woodwork kept us in it.

Would rather avoid them, wouldn't want to go to Sheffield United and would fancy us against the others.

Looks like Bournemouth are going up then - they have shown ambition with their transfer dealings and fair play to them it looks like paying off.

Being honest, I think our top two chances went with PdC.

We were starting to get ropey under PDC. His loss was a significant factor but we were hardly romping home. I'll lean towards the embargo and the loss of Ritchie if and when the time for excuses arrives.

I don't know about you folks but I for one cannot wait for a summer of 'who is to blame' shit-chat.

Fingers crossed Kevin MacDonald inspires us to promotion so we can spend the summer discussing how early we'll get relegated instead.

The only chance we have is getting Sheff Utd in the PO final.

With Wilson as manager, his record in play-off finals is worse than ours ;)

Walsall could be the team to watch in the POs.  They played OK at the CG, I'd give them more of a chance than Tranmere & they're the form team.

Not necessarily.

Maybe end of season includes the playoffs. Brum aren't in the playoffs so their season is over but our's isn't (touches wood).

Anybody know the official rules?

Rooney is here for the play offs, should we make them. That was confirmed when we signed him.

However, Caddis' loan runs alongside it, so when Rooney goes back - Caddis returns. Meaning should we make the play offs, Caddis will be unavailable anyway.

With Benson, people seem to be forgetting that:

1. he is no better than what have already got

and

2. It is likely he will be playing in the play offs for Cheltenham.

Ha ha

I remember hearing/reading somewhere that Rooney's loan wasn't connected to Caddis. It was a swap, yes, but sending Rooney back wasn't linked to Caddis' return, and Caddis' loan running out wasn't linked to Rooney either. There's also some kind of pre-agreed contract if Rooney stays.

However, I could have misremembered this/dreamt it. I'm not as insightful as Chris.

I'd argue he has different qualities to what we have already got. Good point on #2 though! I don't think we'll see Caddis or Benson again anyway.

I swear Benson must have voiced an opinion on Caddis situation that PDC didn't like..

From FL rules:

53.2.2 A Player whose Standard Loan expires (or terminates) on completion of his Loaning Club's League Matches will not be eligible to play for his Parent Club in any remaining League Matches in that Season notwithstanding the fact that such expiry or termination occurs during a Transfer Window.

Suggests that Caddis wouldn't be eligible.

Also, Rooney is out of contract at season end so dont see how any future deal for Caddis could be linked to Rooney as suggested by some.

I think that's the generally accepted theory although Di Canio always spoke positively about him in the press, just commenting that Benson didn't fit the new system.

I think Benson would be starting games if he was here. I don't think he's anything special but we aint scoring enough and he's clinical in comparison to what's here. Don't think what we have is good enough to get us promoted.
