Title: Stevenage FC v Swindon Town FC Official Matchday Thread
Post by: King of Tonga on Friday, October 26, 2012, 13:51:54
Good Morning from a sunny Saturday in Tonga, I have returned to bring good fortune to you all, for those of you too young to remember I took STFC to a play off final and then had to deal with a small uprising in the islands.

If you want match facts then read Wikipedia. This is football not a fucking geography lesson.

1-1

I thought we would lose.

I now think we will win. 0-1 Town.

Hmmm, who is this masked crusader? Good sides don't lose twice on the trot, according to someone wiser than me. Therefore 1-1, you going perchance KOT?

So KOT comes out of retirement to challenge the vacant thread starter position.

Risser will score (good on him).

Darwin came from Shrewsbury, so hates us...maybe we should big up, Alf Wallace, after all he proposed the theory before Darwin and has a line named after him.

If you're looking for a famous zoologist to hate, you've picked the wrong man.  Try Desmond Morris.  Born in Purton, and...

I agree that it should not be done before midnight and if I am lucky enough to carry it on I will ensure this is a tradition that is upheld, all the the time we have a Tongan troll ruining our chances results may be hard to come by.

No.  Can't bring myself to say it.

The great thing about Morris is that his theories of human behaviour, being in many ways similar to simian behaviour in the wild, were based on observations at The Manor.

Further he based a lot of his art on observation, like this one....London Road 1968

Stevenage began as a Saxon village in 7th Century Hertfordshire. It was called Stith ac, which means strong oak. In those days trees were used as meeting places and perhaps one large oak used in that way gave Stevenage its name.

Ha ha. I love this. I guess you don't frequent many towns or cities around closing time Azza? With deep regret I have to tell you that the days of the other fella "taking his jacket off" (and maybe removing his spectacles) ended around about 1950. These days, the equivalent level of decorum would be putting your kebab down to ensure your opponent doesn't get chilli sauce in his eyes. But it never happens and that's why society has gone bad and it will continue to spiral out of control until we reach the end time- which is when multiple thread starters appear.............

Title: Stevenage FC v Swindon Town FC Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Friday, October 26, 2012, 23:01:54
Seeing as its now Saturday in England....

The opponent:  Stevenage

Matchday has arrived and its off to Hertfordshire we go, in search of 3 points and no talk of transfer embargo’s once the final whistle has blown, the chances of both? I will leave that to you to decide. The town of Stevenage sits  a short distance from Welwyn Garden City, the home of Weetabix, and just a few miles away is Knebworth House, where the mighty Oasis once played in front of 250’000 people.  Recent Yank beating Ryder Cup hero, Ian Poulter  calls Stevenage his home, as does Arsenal crock Jack Wilshere, Man Utd winger Ashley Young, and the everlasting Kevin Philips. With Stevenage being just 34 miles from Central London, it was no surprise in the late 1940’s when it was named the first post war ‘New Town’, and then followed many war torn Londoners in need of a home after the Luftwaffe left their last abode in a bit of a mess. For some unknown reason, when viewed from the air, Stevenage forms the shape of a heart.

Interestingly, in 1990, Stevenage twinned themselves with Shymkent, which I am sure you all know is the 3rd largest City in Kazakhstan, who themselves once had their city destroyed by Genghis Khan. Why he didn’t do Stevenage first is another conversation all together, perhaps then we would not have had famous Harry Potter ginger, Rupert Grint, another that can proudly boast he was born in Stevenage.  One noticeable record that Stevenage hold  is  for a pub in the Broadwater area, The Pied Piper, which still to this day is the only public house that Queen Elizabeth II has ever opened, perhaps she could strike up a deal with Wetherspoons? As one TEF member may well be aware, the TV show Saxondale is mostly filmed in Stevenage, as were parts of the 1989 box office smash, Batman.

Stevenage Last 6 – DWWLWW (2nd in League 1 on 29 points) Unbeaten in the league at home this season.

The Threat – Apart from the predicted 5 Celsius at kick off, lowly rated fodder by away fans and Stevenage itself,  midfielder Robin Shroot currently leads the way for Stevenage with 6 goals.

The irrelevant stats – Stevenage concede nearly 60% of their goals in the 2nd half, if our fitness levels are what they are said to be, a late bombardment on the Stevenage goal could prove fruitful. So far this season Stevenage have scored in every home game they have played in,  scoring 12 goals in the process, although they have conceded 8 goals at home in the same time.

A warm welcome too – To good for League One, Miguel  Comminges, our very own Namibian Iniesta, Oliver Risser, and interestingly they have a striker named Lopez, who could possibly be related to Willy Lopez, the bad ass murderer of Patrick Swayze in the film Ghost, although it is unlikely.

The Odds – Stevenage 7/5       Town 15/8      Draw 23/10   Anyone fancy James Collins to score the 1st goal? At 6/1 it could be a decent bet . For a bet with a bit of a difference, Swindon to be winning at 15 minutes in is also 6/1 (Odds supplied by Ladbrokes.com)

Sid Says – After much deliberation, my trusty stick insect walked towards a 3-0 away victory, just the 22/1 for anyone that fancies it.

The Prediction – Despite my thread starting once again being on the line, and this possibly being on 1 of 10 matchday threads,  I am going to stick my neck out here, my heart says a draw could be on the cards, but my testies are saying 2-1 Swindon, with goals from TAH and Gary Roberts, to the delight of the 1088 travelling Town Army.

And Finally – Stevenage is not only the chav capital of The UK but it also has some of the tallest street lights in the land, answers on a postcard as to why. In 2010 Stevenage Borough FC became Stevenage FC, the reason being given that the chairman wanted to move away from “Non-League Stevenage Borough to Football League Stevenage FC”, perhaps next year the filth up the A420 could change their name to fit their non-league status......

It's this kind of lackadaisical attitude that has lead to us being in this mess in the first place. Thanks to Suggs' indifference so for this season we are laying in a shocking 7th place and we haven't even beaten Villa yet. Strange that he's starting then.
That is a wierd one then because on the radio last week they said Risser would not play against us as part of the loan terms.

Do people still think paolo saying the cup game was the priority was mind games? Didn't when I read it and this selection only confirms it to me win or lose today
Paolo's not subtle enough to play mind games.

I've never seen us play 5 centre backs ???

Fab, all we need know is a sickness bug running through the team.  It will be a bit foolish if TAH starts.

Looking at them warming up it looks like

LB Devera
CH Ward
CH Flint
RB McCormack

Which means Troy in centre mid

3-0 is the very least we deserve.
Have been totally dominant & could have scored more.

The most pleasing thing is the fact that we have looked to pass the ball rather than hoof it.

Really pleased for Miles as he had been getting a bit of a battering from their centre half.

All opinions about Di Canio to one side, all I want is for the team in red and white (or Boca Juniors away kit) to be winning games.

Roberts on for Ritchie - The squad's not exactly threadbare is it? :hmmm:

Missed the start of the interview.  Why is PDC saying he's more angry than ever?

I think this is Paolo's way of telling us that he's still breathing.

1. Anger....

PDC:
- Prefer to win against Villa but were always going out to win
- Bostock injured
- Performance was good
- More angry than ever, but not saying why (We should be able to guess - Another injury from context)
- Players deserve this performance as they have been so professional
- Worked hard in the week and improved a lot
- Very delicate moment for Storey. He will improve a lot. PDC knows how to handle him
- Players came out and focused from the first whistle. The same as they have when we have beat good teams. Didnt give Stevenage the opportunity to settle or socre.
- Came out with energy and desire today.
- Sad because of 2 reasons - 1 Side is inconsistent. 2. Another injury
- In 8 months we have played against 3 x Premiership clubs. The players and fans deserve this chance.
- Changes made today were with an eye on Tuesday.
- Bostock played in middle where PDC says he can sometimes be lazy.
- Saved some of main players, but had to play 80% of them
- Doesnt want to talk about the name of someone who put them in trouble
- Troy was ok before the game but started being sick on the pitch. (Might have been saying that Troy got nervous)
- Bostock has muscle damage and is likely to be out for a couple of weeks as he said the pain was like a knife going in
- Hodgetts tried to get him to say why he's angry, as the implication was because of the embargo, However, PDC started to rant about the inconsistency of the team.
- One of the best performances of the season, away against one of the top sides.
- The difference today was that we took the chances that we created and didnt give anything away
- Going to watch Villa game tonight. Has already studied Villa.

Miller:
- Lots of teams in this division are inconsistent
- Villa game in the back of players minds
- Lately we have been poor.
- Good result today and good performance
- Thought Storey and Bostock were brilliant today
- Good save from penalty. Tried to keep the ball down but the keeper was big and stretched to it. Will let one of the younger lads have a go next time

Storey:
- Really pleased
- Shocked to score a header as its not a strong part of his game 'I aint the best in the air'
- Unlucky not to get another one
- Bostock encouraged him not to be scared to have a shot
- Brilliant team with brilliant subs who dont always get one
- Last month has been frustrating. Hope that we can kick on from here
- Didnt play his best game and knows there are things he needs to do to improve
- Want to listen to the manager and learn and improve
- Its been a great day. Fans were brilliant today as always. They were treated to a great game
- Storey is a Wolves fan
- Possible to get a result against Villa
- Great to be in and around the team.
- Will celebrate by sitting on the settee tonight and then a recovery session tomorrow

No complaints from me.  That was a 1st class display of quick, concise, attractive football and not only did Swindon deserve all 3 points but probably 2 or 3 more goals.  Boro were inept of ideas and couldn't string two passes together and suspect those that made the journey wondered how on earth Boro were sitting in second.

I hope its a minor blip on the landscape and take a little comfort, that we ripped Sheffield Wednesday 5-1 this time last year and they then went on a great run securing Auto's - who knows??

Well done to your fans that were also 1st class.

now to avoid internet and newspapers for a couple of days and look forward to the Cup next week.

Hope everyone made it back safely and no doubt enjoyed their brief visit to Hertfordshire.

Thanks for your thoughts. Always good to hear sensible thoughts from the other camp! On Tuesday I was bemoaning the fact we hadn't really showed our class since the start of the season (Brighton at home was on my mind). Sounds like we got it right today.

Very much enjoyed that. Bostock MOTM and showed us he could play as part of a midfield two, not just as a second striker- did the nasty stuff as well as the fancy stuff (Risser by comparison the invisible man. should not be finding himself back here any time soon).

Should prove to Di Canio he really does have a squad with excellent strength in depth good enough to win games against the top sides when a few are out, and emergency loans are not always the answer.

Excellent team performance, although that must be qualified by saying nothing went right for Stevenage in any department on the football field.

Same again tuesday and we've got a real chance (new penalty taker please).

Probably not. There's a bit of a myth about the threads being longer when we lose. Last loss was to Crewe (24 pages), last Sat loss was to Orient (23 pages). This one's up to 31 already.

Great win, great performance (or sounded like it on the radio), dead chuffed for Storey, sets us up brilliantly for Villa who seem to be tearing themselves apart and agree with wiggy:
Great result. Pleased to see some squad players show that they just might be good enough, and especially pleased to see Storey scored.
and Bruce:

Maybe that embargo isn't quite the killer he thought. If he can learn to manage the resources he has (and give himself some credit for perhaps assembling a stronger squad than he first thought), that will be another big step forward in his establishing himself as a manager.

Isn't that the second pen Miller's missed in as many months? (Can't be arsed to look it up)

I've not read the 31 pages on the thread but thought the whole team played well today.  Miles Storey & Bostock were worthy of praise & I thought Macca provided the badly needed support down the right that has been missing going forward.  Benno ran his socks off & the defence had an easy day.

How are/were Stevenage 2nd?  We were class today, closing down quickly & our passing and movement was outstanding, but Stevenage really were poor.

Great all round performance today. Movement and passing was first class.
Stevenage could not live with us.
Fodds had one save all game and a great one at that going in the bottom corner when 3-0 up and he turned it away.

Penalty was actually well placed but the keeper pulled off a decent save after letting the second one in under his body.

Got home earlier than Saturday home game as well.
Great turnout by us Town Supporters....and the typical good banter as always.

No MOM everyone did their job. Hope Archie recovers from his sickness.
Johnny Bostock - Get fit soon Son, you had a great game.....and grat goal for young Miles.

Happy Days on the Road.

This result will be a big boost to team and especially the players who haven't had as much game time, regardless of the result if we put in a performance like that Tuesday night we can go forward looking to put a good run together in the league. Ps. Did they have a drum? Didn't hear it on the radio coverage :)

You always see this comment in match day threads and the answer is obvious. They don't always play like that. Alternatively of course, you could say that their opponents don't normally play as well as we must have done.

agree with that, would imagine Colchester and Orient fans were wondering what we had spent our budget on as we were piss poor against both of these. Stevenage had enough points at the start of the day to hold second spot so must be doing something right.

Cracking day out, supplemented by the best I've seen us play away for god knows how long, we truly massacered them. Fair play to their fans for staying though. Not sure I would have in the same situation! Best bit of the day was pulling in at Finsbury park on the way back, and the platform was lined with Arsenal fans. Two renditions of Wembley Way out of the windows followed, leaving several hundred of them looking open mouthed at what was going on, really was a surreal moment.

Just back off the train from London and happy to be home in the warm, it was fookin' freezing today!!! Winter has arrived!!!

We were superb today all over the park and thoroughly outplayed the hosts, who were/are 2nd in the league! The only downside was Miller missing the penalty, so as he said next time give someone else a go! Was a bit worried on the team selection with 4 CBs playing in the back 4, but they were all great. The midfield worked all game along with the front line who took their chances. Special mentions to Miles Storey who was excellent alongside the ever willing Paul Benson, who again ran his socks off! Thought it was Jonny Bostock's best game in a town shirt, so such a shame to see him go down injured!

Really looking forward to Tuesday and hopefully beating the Villa!!! C.O.Y.R!!!

p.s- Great to see our travelling support around the 1k mark again, sang all afternoon and loved hearing the 1969 league cup final day song again ahead of Tuesday, bring it out more often!

Enjoyed reading through this tonight, having listened to the game on the wireless. Would have gone had I been down south, with it being a new ground and all.

Thanks to whoever posted the Stevenage report. Enjoyed this bit:

It says much that when Bostock went off injured with a few minutes to go, the visitors remained in charge. It was sensational stuff from Swindon

Oh and I just saw the highlights on the FLS. Good to see us tear a defence apart like that. Poor defending from their perspective, but we looked dangerous.

We were taking the piss even with only ten men on the field, but by this time I think Stevenage were demoralised

Great to see the positive comments about Bostock and I hope his injury isn't serious. From the highlights, his ball through to Rooney for number 4 was good, but I also though his ball out to Ritchie to cross for Storey was v clever, and not the sort of ball any of the other 3 would play. I'd love to see him in there week in week out.

The unpredictability of the season continues....didn`t see this one coming at all but all accounts we played them off the park and have seen the highlights and it seems that way. Dont bother listening to DiCanio anymore after the match or before but I hope even he had the humility to speak in postive terms about this performance.....

Tuesday should be interesting with Villa I suspect wanting to sort out there league form rather than get bogged down in not so important cups.

Bring it on...normally you should be able to say we are probably favourites but....this season who knows....never a dull moment.

Amazing result.  Same old Swindon...consistently inconsistent!

And the best bit...Paolo can change the record at last!  See - squad system.  You do know how to use one.

And a big happy hello to the London Reds Biggleswade posse.  Have a great evening lads (& Donna).

We had a cracking time, unfortunately went a bit downhill when one of our number was sick on the pub floor! I'll leave you to work out who. Beer before and after in the supporters club ( their fans were a good bunch), and then back to the Euston Flyer for a top up. I left at 8 but I'm pretty confident there will some very green looking poeple this morning :)

Storey on twitter:

A year ago the stevenage youth team manager told me id be working in maccies #boom

Would have been funny if he had lifted his shirt after after scoring to reveal "You want fries with that" printed on a T-shirt

Loved that goal Storey scored, reminded me of Rideout of old....Jimmy Quinn or Paynter at his best.
Those kind of goals are not so common these days......great cross and a bullet header across the keeper......after leaping like a salmon :D

More of that please.

No such thing as a routine header on debut arriba, was a fair distance out and placed it lovely.

Though granted jumping and arching his body like a salmon may have pushed it a tad as you imply :-[

Geoff Salmons played for Sheff U, Stoke, Leicester and Chesterfield, late 60's through the 70's...must have played v Town a few times, although not sure if he ever scored against us.

just seen the League 1 team of the week on the football league website.

Only Swindon player in it is Wes!!!

What's that about?  He only needed to make one save whilst the rest of the team dominate the match and none of them make the selection.  If there were 10 outfield players who outperformed all of our 10 on Saturday there must have been some special performances around.

A fucking cracking save though- looked to take a wicked deflection off someones hand from where I sat. It might have been a fair shout for a pen.

Granted that just about everyone in the Boca kit would be in with a 'Team of the week' shout.

I thought Macca had a blinding game as well as Rafa and Storey. Benno was his usual run like a bastard and he got some good tackles in.

Rafa's goal was sweet, taking the ball on his chest then vollying on the turn.

Bring it on this evening!
