Title: Swindon Town Vs Burnley Official Matchday Thread
Post by: SuggWillSugg MBE on Monday, September 24, 2012, 23:08:58
So I haven't gone out tonight as oceana has a shitty man for Geordie Shore appearing and will be shit,

However I am half cut after a few jars at the pub.

This game I think will be tough.

1-1 with maybe us sneaking it on pens.

Austin is bound to score too.

But let's see, might sneak a result, Wembley here we come!

COYR.

3-2 to us AET. Austin will score two for them, no idea who will score for us.

Crowd of 7152, 200 odd Burnley.

I'm having a couple of quid on Austin to score first and us to win 2-1.

I don't like it, Burnley fans are taking us as a serious threat. Lets hope the team itself underestimates us then.

Coke, A Rooney and Ward cup tied/unavailable.

2 -1 Burnley.

3-1 victory & Austin to have a shit game.

Also, I don't like Eddie Howe. I can't explain why, there's just something about him that irritates me.

Ditto on hoping Austin doesn't get too much shit from the fans tonight, wishful thinking though.

If we play like we did in the first two rounds we should win.

3-2, with Austin scoring their goals (oviously!).

Fairly poor tickets sales so far, based on the online tickety thing. I guess there'll be a large number who pay on the gate tonight.

I'm going with my Burnley-supporting stepdad. We'll be sat in the DRS if you want to give him some stick!

It will finish 2-2, go to pens, Charlie will take the 10th one to level the scores and take it to sudden death when the very first known instance of a bobble on a penalty spot occurs and he slices it wide to send us through.

I think we can win this one, I'll say 2-1 in front of 6829 with goals from Austin (2x og's) and Austin scoring for them...inevitably getting his hat trick.

I'm a bit mixed about the whole Austin thing, a great player in a short space of time but an absolute cunt the way the latter end of his Town career ended. I think I'll stay quiet in that I won't boo but I won't cheer. (He may get a clap)

Difference between us and Burnley, we took our chances and Austin didn't.

Burnley are a good passing team with a fair bit of possesion, encouragingly we have not been overawed and have matched them. We finished the half stronger

Wow!  Now that is awesome.  I was very happy, I think the Ravens could well represent the AFC in the Super Bowl this season.  I just wish my Jets could take advantage of the Pats mistakes...suddenly the AFC East looks quite weak.

By the way, Streets of Baltimore is a cracking song.

I think the Patriots and Ravens are the two best sides in the AFC to be fair. The Ravens were never actually leading until that last gasp field goal. We're off out after this to the baseball (Oriels v Blue Jays). Next Sunday we're at the Eagles v Giants.

Meanwhile...it sounds like we are on fire at the moment.

Can everyone e-mail Nick Watkins and ask them to play something other than 'Glad It's All Over' when we score??

Everyone know's it's a Palace song (I know Blackpool have 'adopted' it as well) but there are literally millions of other songs out there which are not associated with other clubs.

If I was feeling pedantic I'd tell you the song is not 'Glad It's All Over', but 'Glad all over'.

But I'm not, so I wont.

Thought so, I couldn't remember beating a Lg 2 team.

A pub team? Give over. They beat Stoke and Brighton in previous rounds.

Quote
Losing to Swindon isn't so bad, they're a decent team and will likely have been well fired up by Dicanio.

Quote
Aye, cos Swindon Town FC are a pub team.

Fair play to them for doing so well in League One, with a group of postmen, car mechanics and unemployed youths.

PDC:
- Happy because a chance to play at fantastic stadium
- Performance important for PDC
- We made an outstanding performance
- Most pleasing was that we went forward to try to score after conceding
- Pleased that Troy didnt lose confidence after being beaten to set up Burnley goal
- Praised forwards - especially Benson the rusty man.
- PDCs football is expensive in energy in the amount of running that is required.
- Seemed to make a point about the amount of running required and seemed to be sending a message to someone who doesn't want to run as much
- Talked about the benefits to the club of playing a big team away or at home in the next round. Might have less chance of winning but it would be a fantastic opportunity.
- Shrews on saturday. PDC won't change anything for Saturday ie The same team will play (much laughing in the background)

I couldn't tell whether he was criticising Collins by praising Benson running around for 90 minutes. I also couldn't tell whether he was chiding Navarro for playing well in big games but not in others, or whether he was using Navarro and Benson as a example to younger players who weren't bought into PDCs way of training and playing.

Another fantastic performance and so, so, so very proud of the way this team is going under PdC. I know it's been said before but something very special is happening here, we will have bad times but nights like this, Stoke et al make it so very worthwhile!

We absolutely pummeled Burnley over 90 minutes and could have scored a few more like Saturday, couldn't fault any of the players and T A-H coming back will do us wonders!

A win all round, Austin won me a few quid by scoring, we're in the 4th round and loved the way Charlie applauded us at the end and kissed the town badge. We were angry at the way he left-yes, but I'm sure the majority will wish him well going by tonight!

Onwards to Saturday and a trip to Shrewsbury (who I'm sure Turner will remind them of last season at our place, hope what happened last time doesn't happen again after we beat Stoke)

Who would I like in the next round from winners tonight-Chelsea (H), who do I want in the next round-Bradford (H) with a QF place up for grabs!

Firstly Austin gets a lot of credit tonight for the applauding at the end. And the Town End got it right, give him shit, try and put him off and applaud him after. There was even a subdued chant of Charlie Charlie Austin. Its done, hope he gets a big move and we get a big sell on!

The game was good. You can tell Burnley are a good passing team, not sure how many 1st teamers they rested but its fair to say they were dangerous in the first half. Austin missing a header and a shot from a well worked corner spring to mind. That's not to say we were second best, and we took our chances although a couple more went begging.

Second half we were never really in trouble and always looked more likely to score. But a slight defensive mistake cost us as Austin tapped in. But, and this is the impressive bit, just as I was starting to get a bit nervous with 10 to go we upped it again and attacked rather than sat back. When Troy put the 3rd in Burnley became a spent force, it was only a matter of how many more we scored. We didn't, but went close on 3 or 4 occasions.

So they could have scored more, but so could we moreso. I think the scoreline isn't flattering because of this.

Lastly, Thompson stood up really well to a physical test tonight. Its only a few games in, but he has been superb so far.

Nathan Thompson has made a real difference to the team I believe.  Strong, yes a bit raw, but he gives us a better balance at the back - and doesn't he like a tackle.  Think he would have been my mom tonight, but everybody put in a five-star performance, long may it continue.

Want to see proper venom, I reckon there is a fair chance of that next Tuesday and the return of that useless cunt Prutton.

Rose and Prutton are useless cunts who just took a wage from us. They deserve all the stick we can give them.

In Rose's defence, I think he was trying. Actually that's a bit worrying, to be trying and be that shit. Sheehan on the other hand I rate, but he was fucking dogshit because he couldn't be arsed.

Great performance tonight. We were good all over the park. congratulations must go to the brainless cunt behind me who was saying that Miller was shit and hadn't had a good game for the club. He was superb tonight as he was Saturday.
Andy Williams deserved MOM but nobody had a bad one. What is good to see is the partnerships down the flanks. Ritchie and thompspn are looking good and so are McEvely and Roberts.
All in all a good night. If we can't get a home draw then I'll take Villa away.

Outstanding performance, for me the best performance under Di Canio.....every player knew there job and did it with a good composure....made a good outfit look ordinary at times.
Williams could have had five....played well though Thompson and Mcevely for me were superb.
Mcevely is a real class act and would fit into any championship team i reckon.....very enjoyable evening and now into the last 16!!!
Nice to hear the Town End give Charlie a song at the end............after 90 mins of abuse :D
I bet he enjoyed every second of it.....i did

Not at all. However it never ceases to amaze me how many people that troll this forum hardly ever go to games. Why the fuck would you want to comment on an Stfc forum if you don't even know when the next game is? Now I couldn't care less whether you come from Swindon, London or outer Mongolia but at least have an interest. I visit this forum periodically after games to see if those that attended have the same view of the performance as mine. If it differs then that is fine but I don't want to know that you think that Darren Ward is shit if the last time that you saw him play was at Wembley in 2010.

I now expect the usual replays telling me that I am a wanker (Have to work, got the kids, got no money) as I say been there and done it.

Rant over

Blimey how dare my memory not function as intended when other matters intrude on my life (as has happened)

Clearly I'm not a proper fan.

Whilst I agree with your sentiments, 'wanky football team' is tantamount to heresy.

I would imagine it depends on a) the draw b) the clubs and c) who Sky fancy picking for the live games on a Tues 30 and Weds 31...looking forward to it! Probably by early next week confirmation!

Not at all arriba

Just fed up of the influx of posters that make comments on what we should be thinking etc when the only informed opinion that they can construct is from what the hear on Player or off the Adver website.

This thread is a classic example

So we should forget Austin should we ?

That guy cost us fuck all, virtually single handedly got us to a play off final and make us a sack full of cash.

I will remember him for the good times he brought to the club rather than the manner of his departure.

People that criticise from afar without even seeing things first hand seem more than a bit rich to me.

Unfortunately increasingly becoming the norm on this forum.

Rant over

This place with a few exceptions has always been the home of those who don't go often if at all.  There are a few exceptions, but too much football manager talk can get a bit dull. I'd say post match in a pub or club is where that sort of talk is best suited.

10 yards my arse.

Thing is the ball is right on the box - 18 yards, and there is a box marked out at 6 yards. So a quick bit of Vorermanning means the wall should be 2 yards away from the 6 yard box. But was if fook.

It wasn't difficult for the ref. And that's without the wall charging out before the shot!

Really?? Charlie stayed until January the next season when promotion chances were a distant memory and the club was falling to pieces while Paynter had signed for Leeds before the play off final and wasn't interested. Massive difference.

Paynter deserves the abuse. Came out with the usual, "I'm not discussing a new contract until the end of the season, as it will interfere with the end of the season promotion push" bollocks. When he clearly knew that he was getting a nice little payrise from Leeds at the end of the season.

I wasn't bothered either way about Austin on Tuesday night. He may have put the transfer request in, but at least we made a decent amount from him. He jumped from a sinking ship!

Just read here that Paynter had signed for Leeds before the play off final ? (Leeds already promoted by then)
If thats the case he deserves an MBE for me in timely negotiation, at the peak of his career with us.

i'm also pleased to see Charlie doing well at Burnley and hope he finishes top scorer in the Championship.
We took him from Poole Town to better his career and to enhance the team - which was achieved. I am sure he will thank STFC for that and STFC should thank him and move on.

What goes around comes around Poole Town might say, and I am sure we will benefit again from developing some other hot prospects from lower leagues in the future but time moves on and so will they and us.

Fwiw on the subject of Austin, he looks to have got better and better.  He's holding the ball up well seems extremely strong and accurate with his headers to bring other players into the game.  Given that he's playing in a shit team he's definitely the star in there and given the right team around him he could have 30 goals a season in the championship and certainly cut it with some prem sides.

Glad for the cocky little shit.

I went to buy a couple of coffees just before half time to beat the queues and was surprised our game was being shown live on the concourse Tvs which was nice as I didn't miss anything. Haven't noticed this before so don't know if it's the norm?
