Title: Stoke City Vs Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: SuggWillSugg MBE on Monday, August 27, 2012, 23:01:11
Hopeful I can go to this,

I reckon we'll give them a good game, especially if Stoke rest a few players.

Tights 1-0 win for us, Ritchie banging in a classy goal.

Guess a lot depends on how seriously Stoke take it - lets hope they underestimate us!

See on their forum some twat thinks  they will score six, obviously done his research on us as a defensive unit eh?

If it was at the County Ground, I'd think we were in with a chance of causing the biggest upset yet.

However, at their place I can't see it. I think it'll be tight, but they'll win it 1 or 2 nil.

I'm going for 120 goalless mins and then Wesley saves a couple of pens to send us through

It's going to be tight. I think we can defend against hoofball pretty well, we had enough experience of it last season. Against a Premiership hoofball side we might have problems, but we'll see.

1-0 either way. It's really that up in the air for me.

4-0 Town, another 'cross' from Ritchie and a hat-trick for Caddis after coming on in the 80th minute and working his bollocks off. After his 3rd PdC runs onto the pitch and gives him a massive hug in the middle of the centre circle.

Or something like that....

I suppose a half-hearted Stoke second string could result in another scalp.

I'm finding it hard to be motivated for this one. As long as we get out of Stoke unscathed and with a good performance then that's fine by me.

That's good.  I will eagerly await updates concerning the general Gnasher pant situation for the rest of the evening.

On a more serious note...if these wheels do stay on (and I mean for at least another 9 months, not for the rest of the evening), PDC could be on his way to becoming a Swindon great.  Too much of an unknown in pre-season, but I'm starting to entertain it as a possibility now.

And if I was Paul Caddis, I'd be busting my arse right now to get back in to this squad.

We scored 4 away at a premiership team, there won't be any team to score 4 past Stoke away this year.

As far as I can see, the last team to score 4 at the Britannia in any competition was Sheffield Wednesday on 20 October 2007 in the Championship. I appreciate we had an extra 30mins to do it but its still a fucking good achievement!

- Superb to be involved with
- Dominated 1st half. 2nd half they just pumped the ball up and dominated
- Credit to Stoke. They did well to come back. But we were on top for most of the game
- 120 mins winner: Doesnt know how he felt as he was cramped up at 1/2 way line
- We've got a good record at County ground and have now gone to a Premiership team and won. Hopefully people will take notice of Swindon

- Self believe in the squad is huge
- Everyone put in a huge shift
- Pleased for PDC and his team for the hours that go in in preparation for nights like tonight
- Is there any more cash for Paolo? Still have the same people we are looking at in mind. We need a full squad for a season of 50 odd games

PDC:
- As a perfectionist I dont enjoy conceeding 3 goals
- Players were warriors
- Made some mistakes but a great performance
- 1st half looked like Stoke vs Barcelona
- When Crouch came on we made 2 mistakes and conceeded 2 goals
- 7-8 mins of panic. But after this we came back
- To win like we did you have to have fantastic skill and desire
- Fair result for the squad. A special result
- Top Premiership teams struggle to score more than 1 here
- Happy and proud. But from now PDC thinks about the next game
- PDC was confident at all stages that we could win
- At 2-2 when we panicked for 7-8 mins was the only time he was worried
- Never lost his belief
- James Collins scored fantastic hattrick. Clever and intelligent against big giant players
- Praised Andy Williams. He missed a goal, but the way that he pulled the defence apart was something special for us
- A year ago he called the team chihuahuas. Tonight they were warriors
- Players handled the situation well. Having desire and energy to go forward at the end was difficult for them
- Special occasion, special game. We go through, but we need to focus on Preston
- But they deserve to relax and enjoy tonight on the way home
- Tomorrow they will be back to work
- Hopes for another Premiership team in the next round

Wow what a fucking game. Peace of piss first 60 minutes, could have been more, then they came strong.

Then we scored in extra time. Then they did. It was like two boxers slugging it out. The last minute winner and the place erupted, yet there were still hearts in mouths as they had two corners.

Erm, i'll post more tomorrow. Im emotionally wrecked.

Can't remember when last STFC were last a cup team - it's really been grim in the Cups for years now

2 top tier teams in two seasons plus Bristol City, Brighton, Huddersfield etc for good measure not to mention other minor scalps

From being like Stoke v Barcelona in the first half to taking an old fashioned aerial Stoke battering in the second and living to tell the tale show class, belief and guts, with every player a hero

Can't wait for the first hand accounts and video clips.  Very proud, again, tonight

Buzzing. And I didn't even go. Imagine how everyone must be feeling on the way home from Stoke tonight. That is what being a football fan is all about. The past 12 months as a Town fan have been nothing short of sensational at times. The feel good factor is deffo back. It really does feel like we are building something special here again.

Just got back to my digs in Leicester......fucking brilliant.......the bollocks...

That's in my top ten games and at one point I wouldn't really have given a fuck who won it!

What a hat trick.....sorenson totally spooned it into the air and bang.....he went sprawling into the net as I went spasmo!

Stewards started to panic when we all turned up........I'm all over the place.....can't see me getting to sleep too early........oh what a night! :)

Arrived fairly early and it was clear there'd be a good turn out from us - lots paying on the gate and the stewards, catering etc were all getting a bit overrun. They ended up opening 2 or 3 extra sections of the stand for us.

We got on top of the game by playing neat passing football. I know it's a bit cliché and easy to criticise Stoke for playing boring hoofball, but they did. Thankfully by half-time football was winning. Sorensen completely fluffed a cross for Collins to tap home, before a great header for the second. In all honesty, Sorensen had a bit of a nightmare throughout the match with blocked kicks, wayward kicks and general panic. Before the break, De Vita also had a couple of good chances, hitting the post at least once, whilst Williams maybe took one touch too many when well placed.

Second half they came at us - the expected aerial bombardment. It felt unjust when they drew level - we were playing football properly and our fans were outclassing them by a long way - but the goal was almost inevitable.

Into extra time, and it was all a bit nervy, but Flint rose above everybody to nod home. Then they pulled one back, a nice cross from Walters and Crouch was never going to miss. Then Williams wasted a couple of chances before a last minute winner right in front of the Town fans. How it ended up in the goal I have no idea, Sorensen seemed to save it, then his arms were flailing about and it was over the line. They all count!!

Cue the exodus of Stoke fans, and a rather jolly away end. Great night and all for £12! Bargain!

Ah, that was fan-fucking-tastic.

Enjoyable game - a neutral TV audience would have loved it. I loved it - even more as nothing beats a last minute winner does it?

Till Stoke scored their first goal there was only one team in the game. We were playing better football, we worked harder and we were the only team who wanted to be there.

Then we let them back in with a sloppy goal (I've only see the goals once live from the other end) but Wes appeared to be in the middle of no where - then they bought on the big guns. At this point the steward sat just to the side of me piped up a bit, smug git...

Then we started to panic, Stoke went even more direct and dirty. Pennant sore alot of the ball and any time McCormack or McEvely went near him he hit the deck - sure some were free kicks others werent but EVERY time we went long towards Williams or Collins, Huth and Upson were pushing them in the back, or Upsons favourite arms round the waist and we got fuck all for any of that - including a very decent penalty shout.

Anyway, we had our panic and Stoke got their second, meh....disappointing but Stoke had certainly had the better of the game at the time

Now - how many Swindon sides would have let their heads drops and completely lost all their bottle at that point and let in a third?

Thankfully full time came when it did - because it gave Di Canio a chance to re-focus the players and we came out for extra time with our heads up again playing football and took the lead again, only to give it away again.

Then Williams made a great run all he had to do was square it and he turned in and shot. Wrong choice, then next time he squared it when he should have shot - ah well....

Then we looked to be getting on top again. Stoke were tired so they went for lazy football, just hoof, all they did hoof - even more hoof than the whole game towards the end. Our players were still passing, and covering alot of ground - our superior fitness shone through and we pushed and nicked it right at the end, no more than we deserved.

As for players.

I thought Thompson looked assured when he came on. I thought Stoke would move Crouch out that way and pepper little Thompson with balls over the top but in fairness he handled himself well in the air and made a few good tackles. Impressive cameo.

Flint was a beast in the air and probably wont the large majority of the headers.

Worried about McEvely as our only left back and going off injured.

I thought De Vita was superb whilst he was on. His touch was class, he took players on, great passing, great movement and I think we lost a bit of attacking impetus when we took him off. Although Ferry added alot of hustle and bustle in the middle which was needed.

Collins was excellent when he was in the game - when we were playing our stuff we kept getting the ball into his feet and in behind and he was causing them all sorts of problems, sadly we went a bit long ball ourselves at times which didnt help him. 3 well taken goals.

Williams again was a constant threat when we using him properly and playing balls over the top. Still dont think he will score many goals but will create shit loads for Collins and Benson but getting in behind.

I hope the smug steward feels a bit of a cunt now.

Stewarding was very shoddy - they netted off so much of the away end - that well we ran out of room and it took them ages to finally open up more of the ground for us.

...but...we played good football, we scored 4 goals, we kept going, we didnt tire, we had heart, commitment, passion, desire and we NEVER gave up - all traits Paolo Di Canio has installed at this club, all traits we have missed for many years. All traits that will make us successful.

The man is just the shot in the arm his club has been crying out for, for years.

Last of all, a little shout out to Paul Caddis - you are an absolutely fucking fool if you dont want to be part of this circus anymore. This circus is fantastic, this circus is going places. You need this circus more than it needs you and this will be the best ever circus you will ever be apart of.

Roll on the next game.

What singles this game out is that we had to fight to the end.  It was not against the usual League Cup reserve team from the Premiership, but against their best.  It was no 1-0 fluke, with Town putting 10 men behind the ball for 85 minutes.  It was full throttle, 120 mins attacking football, with Stoke twice pulling level and putting the pressure on from 77 mins onwards.  Must rate up there in the top 10 games ever.

When the hell did they go down to 10?! I see it mentioned as that Ness fella who came on as part of their triple change.

Anyways, what the fucking hell did I witness last night?! In every aspect bar the significance of the game, that beat Charlton away hands down. Absolutely phenomenal performance from every single player last night. Nathan Thompson came on and had an absolute beast imo.

I said sidlittle (Stoke forum) would be in for a treat :D and we didn't let him down.

Such a crazy, crazy game. If Jones could finish, we would've been 2 down before we scored but by half time we could've been 4 up! I wasn't sure which way it'd go when they pulled it back to 2 all but when I saw the two teams regrouping at full time, I had a feeling it'd be us that won. All our players were stood up and around Paolo, no hands on knees, no looking knackered. Compared to Stoke who were all lying on their backs looking like they'd had enough and it really showed in E.T, huge gaps were opening up where they simply couldn't be bothered to track back.

I don't know who to pick out, everyone was amazing last night and I am going to explode when Williams finally scores, the bloke deserves it more than anyone. I think last night we saw everything in Collins that made him PDC's number one target in the summer and why he spent so long talking to him after we beat Shrews.

I have sung myself completely hoarse. Absolutely gutted I can't go to Preston, let's not fuck it all up now by losing. Not that I think we will.

Here are a few quotes from the Doncaster Rovers forum, for a good laugh!

Quote
10th time I've seen di canio kick Collins up the arse!

I wish someone would kick Di Canio up the arse.

Oh look, Paolo di Canio's Swindon are up next...for the THIRD time! This is a f**king disgrace!

Here's Paolo! Anyone got a gun ?

Thanks for the riveting explanation Paolo!.
WTF was that about. I don'ta talk Italiano, and he don'ta talka da Inglish!!

That's what happens if you have an attention seeking arsehole like Canio as manager. The media dine out on it. They probably had a separate camera just for filming his 'touchline antics' ffs.

They don't half phrase it well on sky, saying what a 'character' Di Cannio is. What an arse more like.

That was what I was most surprised by, it wasn't as if Stoke didn't take it seriously and I know a couple of fans who had hopes of a decent run and seeing what happens. But the atmosphere generated from their end was poor.

I suppose we could take the lack of atmosphere from them as a compliment to how well we played, giving them only something to grumble about.

The harvester was dumb.

http://www.otib.co.uk/index.php?/topic/148432-swindon/

I am guessing STFC Rich is Mr Costanza.

Ha! So many pot and kettle comments in there - I always thought of them as fickle city. By the way, OTIB? I wonder when that title will have to be passed over to Rovers (couple of years?)  :)

As JJE says, there are plenty of compliments on there to balance the bitter comments.  There's a tendency among some fans to make exaggerated generalisations about the fans of other clubs, but the truth is that in the main we're all pretty much the same.  I didn't think there was anything on that Bristol City thread that was particularly out of order...other, maybe, that this...

Quote
Hate the club. Horrible arrogant little fans, manager is not much different, pundits have always had a slight obsession with them!
As I live in Wiltshire, as a few may do on here I really cannot stand seeing them doing well because all the fans come out of the closet then.

which got this reply...

Quote
I couldnt disagree with you more.

Am living in Swindon at the moment, as got married to a girl who lives in Swindon last year.

She has a number of friends who are die hard Swindon fans and they are all really nice friendly people.  We certainly have a good bit of banter but cannot really say a bad word against them.

Bile-ridden comments usually say much more about the person making the comment than the people the comment addresses.  Similarly, anyone stupid enough to make generalisations about an entire fan base numbering thousands of people - and believe them - isn't really worth listening to in the first place.

What I like about it all is that fans of other clubs generally see Paolo in either black or white, they either love him and his antics or hate him and dislike everything he comes with.

I have never seen a comment on any other clubs forums that says "yeah Di Canio hes a bit meh, take him or leave him"

And probably 99% of those saying they hate Paolo would not be saying the same if he was at their club bringing them success.

But he isn't...he is ours....I hope we can hold onto him for a long time yet.

Probably one of the best games ever watching Swindon last night.
It was mental when Collins scored the winner.

Not that I agree with the 'arrogant' comments bandied about by some fans about us, but surely fans of ANY club such as ours (i.e. usually mediocre) are entitled to a bit of chest thumping on the odd occasion when times are good.

And it really is a bit rich coming from that BCFC forum when their numbnuts are expecting to reach the PL on the back of their first 3 results (1 of which they lost).

It's the planks who post ridiculous things like "plastic fans", "not really a real football town", "I hope the club folds" that annoy me. What a bunch of twats.

Plastic fans? - You need to go down the road a bit with that one.
Not really a real football town? - The club is older than yours, with a traditional stadium right in the town centre.
I hope the club folds? - Says it all really!

Finally back from Chalke (Stoke) Travelodge. Parked next to another town fan, hello whoever you are.

The monkey place was good.

Saw TalkTalk in the Stoke Harvester, maybe he kicked off the trouble with his machete :)

Anyway what a night. Got to the ground just after 7, one section was already full and one was getting there. It was pretty obvious they'd not predicted such a big walk up crowd. So for the first few minutes were spent with the faithful walking along the front row of our block to get beyond the Bet 365 banner. Thankfully they opened up the overspill section properly and the Bet 365 banner took a battering after one of our goals.

What a first half, the expected chalk and cheese style clash was evident. Ours was to try an keep the ball, pass it and damage them with movement and pressure. Theirs was get it wide and wang it into the box. And to be fair we were let of a couple of times as Jones and other striker wasted golden chances. Maybe it was to be out night.

As the half went on we looked pretty good with out passing game. We were working pretty hard too to try and limit crosses into the box. Jones is a bloody beast, far more of a physical handful than say Crouch, but thankfully their front two didn't click at all.

The same can not be said for ours. They were hasteling, harrying and giving Upson (21 England caps) and his partner a torrid time. Signal-1 the local Stoke station picked it up on their post match analysis - that we kept the ball and played it with purpose - we hassled them all over while Stoke went too long in an aimless way.

I guess you've heard and or seen the goals by now, but we were a tad fortunate thanks to Sørensen on the first. In fact Sorensen had a mare in goal. Not only did he give us the first, but also nearly got charged down a couple of times, had dodgy kicking and was generally a bit crap (Wes kicking wasn't 100% yesterday either, but his were 'out of play' miskicks rather than anything dangerous).

So while Stoke will point to missed opportunities we should really have had more than the two at half time. Another highlight of the night was the chap in the front row of the overflow section, celebrated our first goal and accidentally hit his girlfriend in the kisser.

After the break the home side started to pressure more. They scored after about 60 minutes (?) and then we were under increasing pressure. It wasn't backs to the wall exactly but you could feel it coming. That said we had a couple of our own - De Vita's only miss-controlled ball was one that with a better first touch would have seen him with a shot on goal. William shot when he should have crossed and crossed when he should have shot has already been mentioned (or was it Collins?!).

In any case, on came the big guns, and the equaliser 5 minutes from time and seemingly our chance had gone. The Stoke fans woke up a bit, mainly to mimic PDCs arm waving and I think met with chants of "Are you Wenger in disguise".

The full time whistle was a relief, we were under the cosh and had made it to extra time. I didn't fancy our chances but I'd go home with my head held high and a smile on my face. Proud of the effort.

But that's not what happened exactly. Flint went and scored from a corner. And Karma paid a visit as I bent down to hug my son he jumped up and whacked me in the jaw with the top of his head. The bruise is appearing now.

I was confident we would hold out now. Especially when Stoke went down to 10 after an injury to one of their players having used all three subs. Our passing game returned and we looked dangerous as we used the space.

But no, a breakaway from Walters and a peach of a cross to Freak made it 3-3. Someone a couple of rows behind half mentioned it looked like Wes could have done better. I don't think so myself, just a quality goal. Oh well, the lotteries of penalties will be no disgrace.

Except it wasn't pens. McEverly was sparked out following a clash of heads. On came Thomson. A lot to ask for a young man. Except he was a young man possessed - I can pay no greater compliment than to say I am not sure what else he could do to play better in his cameo.

I'll be honest, the winner is a bit of a blur. I think Ritchie was in there, and the ball got to the far post, and the hapless Sorensen flapped at it but it was in. And that sent me celebrating like, well like when Macca scored the last minute winner at Nothampton on Boxing day. And that was the end of the match.

Except it wasn't. The bastard ref slowed down time and we had to survive two Stoke corners, the latter with the keeper up. I got flashbacks of Robinson at Leeds. Thankfully we survived. Unlike Stoke.

I'm not going to do player ratings. I though Ritchie showed he can step up a league. I thought the front two were tireless and superb. I thought everybody else had great games, Devera stepping into right back did really well (wish he was a bit quicker, thats all :)). I can see that if DiCanio's "way" means this kind of performance more often then I should shut the fuck up about Caddis.

Agree with the comment about Thompson - I know he only came on late but he had a fantastic game. He put in one or two brilliant, strong tackles and picked up good positions going forward too. If he can keep that up he'll get a run in the side some time this season.

My particular highlight was when he made a fair tackle that put Pennant 6ft in the air - despite disliking him before the match, he didn't help himself by trying to bet Macca sent off.

Its a bit of an incoherent ramble. You can't really get the rollercoaster down on paper.

My lad has been lucky, first ever match a 6-0 demolition of Port Vale, a promotion, two trips to Wembley ( arguably unlucky). Moments like this. Its why he did well in the prediction league last year, a relegation wasn't enough to grind his optimism away

Oh yeah, the one on one with Fods, Fods was advancing tentatively and then just as he was about to pull the trigger from 8 yards out the telescopic legs of Flint intervened. Class.

Too right, it was an awesome tackle, and the ref had the cheek to give a goal kick :)

Mind you, he had just given Stoke a corner after Crouch headed the ball out

James Collins enters some exclusive company, as men who've scored an away hat-trick for us in the LC. The list is short...Peter Noble at Swansea, in 69, season after we won the thing, and JAF in the memorable run to the semi in 94/95. JAF came at the Valley, in a two legger after we lost 3-1 at the CG in the first leg.

Home hat-tricks aren't common either...the first Jack Smith v Darlo in 62/63, then Jimmy Quinn (twice) notably in consecutive games in 87/88 v Shitty and Pompey.

Not a bad way to get you're STFC career going....

Just got back after staying in Stoke last night.

What a night, quite possibly the best game I have ever been to. We were brilliant, looked like the better team for long periods of game and totally deserved the win.

Was a bit annoying waiting at the start of the game for the stewards to open the overflow bit, very poorly organised. Was impressed with the ground, think it would be very impressive when full.

First half we were brilliant, played them off the park and could have easily been 5-0 up at Half Time. It was only when they got one back that we got nervous and invited them on to us.

When it went to extra time, I thought they would go on and win it but we were the better team. After Flint had put us 3-2 up, I thought that was it, but fair play to Stoke they came back at us with 10 men and got the equaliser.

After that they really tired, and we had many chances to win it but I didn't think it was going to happen until Collins stuck it in, and they away end went mental!

Can't single out any players for special praise, each and every one of them was brilliant.

What a night. So proud to be a town fan.

Not quite sure why the need Adam, surely he will just stand there watching the ball go over his head.

I can understand it must be frustrating to watch every week, but I think it would be a mistake for pullis to change the game plan if they want to remain in the Prem.

hi all...stoke fan here!

just wanted to firstly say well done for tuesday, best team won no doubt about that..made us look like a bunch of part timers with a hangover!

firstly to clear a couple of things up........

1)"Harvester-gate!" - please don't take that as a representation of Stoke fans in general! those involved (on both sides, ours and yours) i'm sure you'll agree are bloody idiots who embarass the club they're apparently there to support.every club has them and thankfully they're a minority!
2)our lack of support - we'd only just had the Arsenal game 48 hours earlier and stoke isn't exactly a flush area economically so the prospect for some of going to the Brit on a Tuesday night for a second round cup tie against a lower league side (no offence meant, genuinely) was obviously never going to be a big draw for many of the fans (particularly given the football they've had to witness there since January - pretty dire most of it!!!)
3) the waving our arms around ("Doing the Wenger") - we always do it when Arsenal come to take the piss out of Arsehole Wenger and his constant pleas for free kicks, penalties etc. anytime anyone breathes near one of his precious little players. when PDC starting doing it we started "Doing the Wenger" for a laugh (again, no offence..pretty much everyone in football including us has a LOT of time for your manager.genius player and great manager!)

anyway, onto the game.......

we were AWFUL, possibly the worst display i've seen us put in for at least 5-10 years! players of ANY Premiership side should not be embarassing themselves in that fashion. Whitehead couldn't pass with anymore strength than you'd expect from a 5 year old, Upson looked confused everytime the ball came near him, Jerome wandered around whinging and blaming everyone else for his lack of ability and don't even get me started on Shotton (although apparently he's off to Leicester, i'm driving him there myself!!!). most Stokies are livid with the players for their performance (especially given that much of the same team managed to get a 0-0 with Arsenal 2 days earlier) and are just thankful we even managed to take you to extra time!
but despite our failings (and i won't bore you with them all, we'd be here for weeks just talking about Shotton's that night) i was VERY impressed with you guys..both players and fans alike!

your left side did a proper job on Pennant all night! Pennant looked to be positive and get at you (as did Kightly, probably our only 2 starters who actually gave it a go) but you forced him to come inside virtually everytime where he was almost always crowded out and gave away possession/went down praying for a free kick. Collins was very sharp, very alert and obviously knows where the goal is.

at the back you seemed very solid (until Crouch came on) and held up to our aerial bombardment far far better than most of the "Ooh ref he's hurt me by brushing against my shoulder" Prem players we come up against.

all in all you were better all over the pitch, gave it far more dedication to the cause and actually looked like it meant something to you.we were just embarassing!

probably a great game for the neutrals due to the amount of goals and the whole back and forth of it all but for a Stokie it was completely soul destroying to see our team put in such a keystone cops kind of performance, credit to you guys for exploiting that (people always say in the Prem if you make mistakes like that you get punished; you guys proved that decent lower league sides will also punish you just as much!!!) and good luck for the rest of the season and the cup run that follows for you   :)

we were AWFUL, possibly the worst display i've seen us put in for at least 5-10 years! players of ANY Premiership side should not be embarassing themselves in that fashion.

Collins was very sharp, very alert and obviously knows where the goal is.

at the back you seemed very solid (until Crouch came on) and held up to our aerial bombardment far far better than most of the "Ooh ref he's hurt me by brushing against my shoulder" Prem players we come up against.

all in all you were better all over the pitch, gave it far more dedication to the cause and actually looked like it meant something to you.we were just embarassing!

probably a great game for the neutrals due to the amount of goals and the whole back and forth of it all but for a Stokie it was completely soul destroying to see our team put in such a keystone cops kind of performance, credit to you guys for exploiting that (people always say in the Prem if you make mistakes like that you get punished; you guys proved that decent lower league sides will also punish you just as much!!!) and good luck for the rest of the season and the cup run that follows for you

What
hi all...stoke fan here!

just wanted to firstly say well done for tuesday, best team won no doubt about that..made us look like a bunch of part timers with a hangover!

firstly to clear a couple of things up........

Generally speaking your fans were decent and after the game were praising the Swindon performance.
For the record can't see Stoke going down this season.

A couple of whacks on the shoulder from macca should do it.

Slightly anticlimactic draw, but it could have been worse and at least its at home. I can't see them bringing many, I certainly wouldn't want to go to Burnley midweek if the tie was reversed.

We've hammered Brighton, battered Stoke (away) plus last season's escapades against higher league clubs. For them is a no-glamour draw that that may well put an end to their cup run this season.

Not a great tie for either side. The only plus is that we'll both see it is winnable. Being selfish, I would have preferred to play at Burnley so that I could go, but at least playing at the CG means we're more likely to get a result.

I think a few ears pricked up when we beat Stoke. If we can get through this one for a decent tie in Round 4 the media could well go Paolo mad.

Don't think it's that bad a draw, one of the easiest ties we could have got and at home. Will depend on how seriously Burnley take it, got to be a good chance they'll rest some players to save them for the league which Paolo ain't going to do.

Definitely winnable and then an even better chance of a big draw in the next round.

It was interesting what was said during the commentary the other night about FL clubs not being able to field a much weakened side in this seasons league cup unlike the premier league teams who can. You can understand why a top prem side are not prepared to gamble on injuries when the league cup prize money is pretty poor ( by their standards) all the way through. Losing semi finalists last year got £25,000 whilst the winners got £100,000 compare that to £2,000,000 for winning the FA cup and you can see why. Would imagine Burnley will want to progress regardless of prize money as much as we do so can't see them bringing anything less than their strongest team down to us in round three.

25k for losing in the semi final! That's crazy. Had no idea it was so poor. Essentially the only money to be made is off the gate and tv.

Even the FA Cup is peanuts compared to the Champions League - Chelsea got just under £50m from it last season and even the losers in the play off rounds get over £1m.

Agree. I guess we get a percentage of the Stoke gate money but the prize money could of been as little as few thousand pounds which is surprising. Compare that to the £1,000 prize money for an FA cup early qualifying round and it is even more surprising.

Title: Re: Stoke City Vs Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: jonny72 on Thursday, August 30, 2012, 23:15:08
I think the gate money (after expenses) gets split 50/50 in the League Cup. The FA take a cut of all the gate money in the FA Cup (something like 5% to 15%, dependent on the rounds and clubs involved) which I guess makes up a large chunk of the prize money.

Title: Re: Stoke City Vs Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Notts red on Thursday, August 30, 2012, 23:24:02
I know it's a massive thing for the junior sides to get as far as possible in the FAcup qualifying round as it really does make all the difference. Personally I still see the league cup as something special so to make round four and possibly beyond would make the prize money irrelevant.

Burnley at home is an OK sort of draw....there's prob more shit, than decent on offer at this stage, and the Austin factor does provide a sub plot. There's a few on here who'd probably have preferred a trip to the BNP heartland...but think it was KR who pointed out their's and Stoke's position in our LC heritage, however he didn't mention Brighton who we played in 94/95, so at least a semi final beckons.

....and anyone who hands in a transfer request should certainly not be in the good books of the Town faithful. The only sin worse than that, is leaving to join Oxford.

i haven't said anything about the game yet, though most of what i wanted to say has already been said.

what i really wanted to put across to those of you who couldn't be there was our level of fitness - somebody has said this also...

final whistle goes - swindon players all run over to paolo and look full of beans, everyone on their feet eager to go again - stoke players amble over to their bench and sit down looking totally fucked.

i pointed this out to my dad there and then and still felt we'd go onto win it.

paolo's going nowhere soon, he'll only leave at the end of a season because of his massive emphasis on pre-season - which has been completely vindicated.  there's no way he could stand having a group of players not able to meet his expectations from a fitness point of view.  even then the right club would have to be in the market for him and if the worst does happen and he does leave then we'll be able to make the right (hopefully) appointment to replace him.

burnley up next?  easy!

how much is a season ticket to wembley?

Just watched the highlights on the stfc player.  Its on our own bloody site, do you not think they could get the players names right.  Adam Flint mentioned twice in the commentary.  Annoying.

If and when Austin moves on from Burnley are we on a percentage?

Someone on their forum reckons he is worth 5mill!

Luvly Jubbly
His value will drop once we prove he can't score against a league 1 side...

Don't think it's that bad a draw, one of the easiest ties we could have got and at home. Will depend on how seriously Burnley take it, got to be a good chance they'll rest some players to save them for the league which Paolo ain't going to do.

Definitely winnable and then an even better chance of a big draw in the next round.
if not I would take the winners of Bradford and Burton at home and then we are in the quarter finals- Wemberleeeey!

Completely agree. I'd also like to think he'll be more than aware that most clubs at a higher level are already bursting at the seams with players. Players that, for the most part, I think will be more complacent and used to being the boss.

When (or if!) he goes Paolo knows that he has to start again. Build a new team, be allowed to ship out at his will. Be allowed control in everything from top to bottom. The backing he's has here, is rare. Not just rare but the contractual situation within the squad was also ripe for a man like Paolo. He'll have real issues at a new club and won't have all his ducks in a row off the bat. The pressure, which we all know he thrives on, will be huge and after what he's built here, wouldn't exactly be inviting.

Obviously it's all speculation and confirmation bias, but I think most of it would prove true if the worst were to happen.

It is annoying, but all the Player commentary is done by a third party, so not much the club can do about it. I know for a fact that the mispronunciation of Aden's name has been mentioned to the guy who does the commentary. Clearly he paid no attention.

Nice hat-trick from Jim Collins as well.

(although I suppose Jim is short for James)
